HAYWIRE: A COMMENTARY BY BELLOSH101

I said in my last article that I’d cover a RP thread. Well, that plan has been changed, muahahahahaha. For this week’s post, I’ll be covering one of the greatest terrors the kingdom of Equestria has ever known. So, let’s get down to it, shall we?

9DmcOl.jpg

Anybody who has kept track of the foal-centric RP threads for a while now will probably shudder at the mention of Mojo’s filly OC, Haywire. For those who don’t shudder... they should learn to do so. This little filly hails from a family of hay farmers aptly enough; her brother Hayseed (not to be confused with the hillbilly show character Hayseed Turnip Truck) handles sales and distribution of hay, while Haywire’s pugilistic sister Haymaker handles the farm’s day-to-day operations. It is left to these older siblings to watch over Haywire, who’s also aptly-named for another reason.

Ever a lover of good fun, Haywire has a nasty habit of making everything go haywire around her. No matter where she goes, her mischievous hijinks are sure to bring momentary chaos to anyplace she sets foot in. Ponies should especially wary of firecrackers whenever Haywire’s around, for she sure loves setting them off. Obviously, the little earth pony will end up disciplined for her shenanigans too, whether by her teacher Cheerilee or by Haymaker. Some of her actions from time to time have noble intentions behind them, but they tend to backfire all the same.

If you feel like your RP thread has gotten a bit dull, have Mojo send for this filly. Haywire will set things rights... or try to at any rate.....

-----------------------

Famous Visitors: The first time Haywire appears in Mane RP, we find her classroom graced with the presence of the Wonderbolts themselves. The filly is absolutely thrilled to have them come to her school, and even asks if she could join the team... despite not having pegasi wings. Then when the Wonderbolts go outside to demonstrate a few moves, Haywire compulsively climbs up a tree for a better view only to find herself stuck requiring rescue by Soarin’. This thread readily establishes how this pint-sized menace is one of the least mature OCs around, unable to stand having to learn anything in school. Manifestations of her dislike of school include always arriving late and also bringing captured critters along in her saddlebags (which tend to escape and get everywhere). Maybe Haywire will get some sense later on in later RPs?

-----------------------

The Good Ol Hoedown: We see in this thread the Hay Family all together for the first time. Paid to play music at an Appleoosa hoedown, Haywire and her older siblings each have their own instruments. Haywire, the juice-harp player, tags along as “the cute part of the band”, but of course she almost immediately gets into trouble by swiping party food and making fun of her sister. While we do see that she can be remorseful if she hurts the feeling of her family, it’s doubtful that Haywire really learned too much from this particular incident other than not steal pies.

-----------------------

A Country Field Trip: Here in this RP, some of Haywire’s more admirable qualities are brought to light. Bored out of her mind on a class trip to Tiny Apple Orchard near Fillydelphia, the little earth pony accidentally injures a poor rabbit when one of her slingshot projectiles ricochet around the trees. Sorrowful over her misdeed, Haywire willingly looks after the rabbit, now named Ruby, as the class continues their farm tour.

Of course, also leave it to Haywire to accidently light an apple tree on fire in a misguided attempt to collect its fruit. As QuickLime put it; “Some foals just want to watch the world burn.” Since this thread is still ongoing, it remains to be seen what Haywire do next (especially now that her big sister is on the scene).....

-----------------------

Class Is In Session: Another school session; another opportunity for Haywire to be tardy. This time around it is book report day, and the filly in question forgot all about her assignment. Fretting over a terrible fate should she be called upon, Haywire conspires to forestall her doom by extending everypony else’s book reports with stupid questions. The slacker gets lucky enough to have Cheerilee declare recess before being called upon, but even a chance meeting with the author of her book may not be enough to save Haywire. As the thread progresses, we’ll just have to wait and see....

-----------------------

Apple Bloom’s Big Day: Finally, we get to a RP thread where Haywire may not actually be the most disruptive force of nature within in. Invited to Apple Bloom’s birthday party, Haywire’s normally-calamitous nature gets overshadowed by Applejack’s unfortunate mistake of mixing up the foal and adult cider barrels. Left as one of the few foals not inebriated from AJ’s experimental cider, Haywire valiantly helps to not only dispose of the bad barrel but also plays an instrumental role in rounding up some animals that broke lose during the chaos.

Perhaps Haywire has a productive future ahead as a cowgirl? Only Mojo knows for sure; speaking of him, he’s an interview I got with Mojo himself:

Bellosh101: To start things off, how did you come up with the idea for Haywire?

Mojo: Well, it was after I created Hayseed. This was before the "Sweet and Elite" episode aired with Hayseed Turnip Truck in it. I wanted to create a 'country' pony who was a little uncouth but yet a good guy with common sense. It was after I created him that I thought about creating my first foal pony. That's when the brainstorm came to me, and I created Haywire as a sister to Hayseed (a play on the 'Hay' theme). Haywire just seemed to be the perfect name for a good hearted, but mischievous filly!

-----------------------

Bellosh101: Ah yes; what types of mischief do you like making Haywire get into? What types of characters do you think play well against the filly?

Mojo: I picture Haywire as a female filly version of "Dennis the Menace." She loves playing with her slingshot, collecting frogs and pranking fellow foals. She really likes pranking those who look down on her or hurt her friends. But there are also times she just like to prank for the sake of laughter. Things like tacks on chairs, water bucket over the door, sneezing powder, things like that. I think that snobby, snooty ponies are her best foil (like Diamond Tiara & Silverspoon), and as a blank flank, she can totally relate to the CMC's (though she cares more about fun than her cutie mark).

And one more thing, she does have a fascination with fireworks. Loves to use them in pranking or just whenever she feels necessary. She's smart enough to make them herself, even though she loathes studying science things in school. Without knowing it, she IS performing 'science' with her hoofmade firecracker rockets.

-----------------------

Bellosh101: And what sorts of unique challenges do you come across when RPing as Haywire?

Mojo: The main challenge is to make sure she doesn't go 'too far' in her antics. Haywire's not a mean, bitter filly, but she does like to have fun. And she means well, such as the RP where her classmates are kicking out with hind-legs apples from trees. She comes up with the idea of aiming a few firecracker rockets at some trees to shake the apples off. THAT idea didn't exactly end well. Sometimes, even when she's trying to do something good and noble, it can go horribly wrong. My challenge is to keep her and her antics from 'crossing the line' between pranking and 'vandalism', between having a laugh and being TOO wreckless.

She is bold, daring, but there is a caring side to her. It's often difficult to balance all these traits of hers during a RP.

-----------------------

Bellosh101: What plans have you got in store for Haywire's character-arc? Is there a chance she'll learn to be less of a menace over time?

Mojo: Well, every filly and colt has some 'growing up' to do. I picture Haywire having both 'growing pains' and 'life lessons' during her foalhood in RP. Perhaps someday, maybe even get her cutie mark. She will learn the value of hard work, or education/reading as well as seeing that there is more to life than fun or a good laugh. Nothing wrong with fun and laughter, but Haywire will hopefully learn that her 'genius' for pranks and firecrackers could be used for more useful purposes.

-----------------------

Bellosh101: So what specific plans do you have for upcoming threads where Haywire learns about these "more useful purposes" for her genius?

Mojo: Well, in AB's birthday RP, Haywire used her brains to figure out the source of the 'problem' and then a solution that worked (for the most part). In the school RP with the book report, Haywire will learn that books can be a wonderful experience (after trying to 'bluff' a book report). In the Field Trip RP, she has learned that rash actions can sometimes have surprising consequences.

-----------------------

Bellosh101: And given the sorts of children and authority figures that Haywire has already encountered so far, what types of characters would you like to have the filly meet next if possible?

Mojo: Well, I'd like to see her meet more positive 'role models' ponies to help her see her future potential. For example, in the 'Class in Session' RP, she briefly met Louise LaMare, who was by chance, the author of the book Haywire DIDN'T read for her book report. This meeting has started to challenge her old way of thinking about books.

Ideally, it would be nice to see Haywire meet members of the Mane 6, or other great OCs who are successful and can serve to inspire her. She does look up to Cheerilee and some of her fellow classmates, but she could use more positive role models in her life.

-----------------------

Bellosh101: Now for the (almost) last question: what thread do you consider to be Haywire's most noteworthy RP apprearence and why?

Mojo: That's a tough question. If I had to choose one to rank as the most noteworthy, it'd be Country Field Trip. Haywire caused some havoc, but she also learned to care for others, the value of owning up to your mistakes and the joy working together for the common good can bring. A close second is Class in Session, for reasons already mentioned in my previous answers.

-----------------------

Bellosh101: Any final remarks you'd like to make about your OC?

Mojo: Yes. Haywire can be a hoofful for anyone who happens to be in charge of watching her. Her older sister Haymaker and her brother Hayseed try their best, but still, there's a lot of 'onery' in their younger sister. But deep inside, Haywire's a good pony and genuinely WANTS to be good. Sometimes, her pranks can backfire, and there are times she's just the kind of filly who either 'finds' trouble, or trouble 'finds' her. But the main thing Haywire needs are friends. Filly friends, colts friends, adult friends to help her 'figure out' life. She's got a lot of potential and a lot of love to give. Just stand clear when she brings out her slingshot or lights up her hoofmade firecracker rockets!

-----------------------

Bellosh101: And like that, we're done. Thank you for coming by today, Mojo!

Mojo: You're welcome, Randy! Anytime! And thank YOU for your interest in Haywire!

-----------------------

I hope you all enjoyed my look into Mojo's lil' OC today. Next week, I'll probably take another "break" so I can do one of my personal Character Anatomy write-ups. In the meantime, I welcome everyone to nominate what characters or threads I should cover next down in the comments below!

And I thought that Tacobob Wind Walker (app still in work) was a kid terror. Now I know the true fear...<shivers>
