blog-0837469001425323224.jpegHey everypony! Friendly neighborhood admin here!

I'm going to be starting a new series of articles here called The Workbench. In it, I'll be detailing some of the board systems I'll be working on and what you guys can expect to see on Canterlot in the future. This is all in an effort to maintain transparency with the administration and good relations with the users that make this board what it is. Let's get started!

We're making a concerted effort to streamline things and ensure timely evaluation of applications and rapid action of approved applications. You may have noticed a slight change in how staff members are denoted in their profiles. RP Staff and Senior RP staff now have their own user ranks, making it easier to distinguish who to go to for help with applications, RP, or board policy. There have also been some back end tweaks to staff permissions to allow them more freedom to assist users as necessary.

Work on the new permission sets is still in progress. In order to prepare for deployment of donations/subscriptions, the Donators group will need to be repurposed and moved to a secondary set (ie: not displayed as a user rank). Don't worry, if you have donated to Canterlot before, we haven't forgotten you! I've got a list of all prior donors and rest assured you will be recognized when the new stuff is deployed. Until then, you will be returned to your previous member rank. Any previous board-based donor perks such as the ability to change display names will be retained if possible.

And that's it! Hope you enjoyed this peek at projects on my workbench! Follow this blog for updates on my Canterlot projects!

Woo, previous donors remembered! But thanks Dio, nice to know what's going on in the boiler room... with the wrench. This suddenly feels like Clue.

Thanks for the update. I appreciate the attempts at transparency. Also the fact that it seems someone listened when I ranted about applications being too slow a few months back. Hehe. Though I do still wonder if we need both junior and senior approval, I question if it would be more efficient to just have one rank to do approvals, but I think I've already raised this point a while ago.

Anyway, if this is going to be an attempt at transparency by the board, I'd be interested to know where the cast character debate ended up in the end. I remember raising a number of issues with it and getting no real response. *awkward shrug* Also the whole board canon debate thing, I was told that was going to be debated by the staff as well. Or is that still ongoing? Hmm.

Either way, nice to hear about the board improvements, I feel it's definitely a step in the right direction and I'll be looking to these for news in future.

Thanks guys

We've already removed one layer of the applications process by allowing SRP to immediately promote users to RP certified and move apps to appropriate sections without having to go through global moderators/administrators first.  For now we would like the RPH+SRP layers to remain in place.  We will re-evaluate as needs dictate.

Well that's good for first time applicants I guess. Though I still fail to see why two layers of confirmation are needed... Ahh well, it's a step in the right direction. As I said, and I shall look out for more posts like this one. Nice to actually feel like there's a dialog going on. Hehe.

We do two checks because people are fallible and might miss things if not being careful. If it's all on just one person to make the call, that leaves too much in their hands. People may force things through before they're ready. Things may get approved which shouldn't. We just feel it's better to have two sets of eyes on every app. It diffuses the burden of having to make the call for when an app is ready.

Hmm, well, fair enough. If it's a case of just having an extra set of eyes though maybe the whole thing needs a slight tweak to allow that but not hinder efficiency. Maybe just needing a junior RP member to approve a character to start roleplaying, under a kind of provisional agreement just until a senior looks it over. It's not like they would miss anything crucial after all. Hmm.

Either way, the whole thing needs a look at. Probably should do some data collection research to see how efficient the system is and how often errors come up before I start proposing those kinds of changes though. Should be pretty easy to do.

Still, something to keep in mind. Ideas blerg, hehe. I won't digress any further, though I'll probably end up messaging someone interested once I have a proper think about it. If there's anyone interested. I'll definitely be doing some research to satisfy my own curiosity though. But yeah, best leave it there, I wouldn't want to cause a debate in the comments section, we need a proper thread for that.

So yeah, thanks guys, you've given me a few things to think about.

That would cause frustration for the user when they get told they can use their OC one day, but not the next. Plus there's no guarantee that a user will check back in on their OC app thread once they've obtained this provisional approval. Our current system however minimizes potential frustration by simplifying the apping process on the user's end, giving them confidence that once their OC's approved, it'll remain approved. :)

Again, I will say I need to think about it properly and again I will say I will not digress further. We need a proper thread if we're going to discuss things like that.

I will also say though, in the kindest and politest way I can that I don't particularly appreciate you highlighting your points so boldly. I'm sure it wasn't the intention, but such things can be viewed as rude and condescending. I'm sure you weren't trying to be but unfortunately that's how I received it, hehe. Just you know, I'm trying to help out and all so I apologise if I did offend. I'm not entirely sure if I did...

Either way, as I suggested, we should probably just leave the conversation there until we can discuss it properly, not in the comments section.
