Physique: Tall, and slender for her height.

Occupation: Diarch of Equestria (Monarch until relatively recently)

Cutie Mark: A glowing, golden sun. Though her influence on the sun is an important part of her, her cutie mark is as much a symbol of her role as a leader, and thus a beacon of hope and guidance for the populace.

Even as a filly, Celestia demonstrated a confidence seldom seen among ponies. Her passion, combined with her natural abilities, caught the attention of those around her and soon enough she found herself apprenticing under the most capable ponies on the continent.

And as such, she was at ground zero when tragedy struck. In those times, the cycle of day and night was managed by a highly skilled group of unicorns. When they were incapacitated, and thuse couldn't continue the cycle, chaos ensued. After only eight hours panic had taken hold, and it was clear things would only get worse from here.

Celestia knew that manipulating the heavenly bodies was not an easy task, and she knew the consequences of a lapse in control would be dire. Nonetheless, Celestia volunteered for this responsibility and even in the face of such arguments made by ponies older than her at the time, her conviction held. In the face of her determination, paired with her known ability and the desperate situation, and what leadership remained soon capitulated.

After a period of necessarily abbreviated instruction, she made her first attempt to raise the sun. As the ponies around her watched with bated breath, she initially faltered, having never before attempted a task of this scale. However, her determination held out and the sun lifted into the sky. Celestia's cutie mark appeared as the sun rose, as much earned for her conviction as the action it drove.

Unique Traits: As a centuries old alicorn, Celestia has a number of capabilities well beyond those of normal ponies. As well as an exceptional understanding of and capacity for magic, she also domain over the sun itself. She regulates its position throughout the day, and with an effort of will can move it about the sky, and increase or limit its effects over areas she chooses.

As somepony who has been in a leadership position as long as she has, Celestia has seen just about everything. She is seldom flustered by even the strangest or most intense of circumstances, and while of course she can still be caught off guard she's made preparations for a wide array of situations.

History: Celestia was a young mare when Equestria became a nation, and the three species of pegasus, unicorn and earth pony unified. Though Celestia was too young to lead such a change, the idea of peaceful coexistence was something that always appealed to her, and she did her best to encourage cooperation in a time of mistrust. These proved to be formative years for her, being a major source of inspiration for her own rise to power, and her methods and goals.

What followed was a time of unprecedented peace. Though it took many years for the three pony races to begin trusting one another, the formation of Equestria was the beginning a peaceful period.

Sadly it was not to last. A creature of unknown origin, which looked like a composite of several creatures and wielded strange magic, arrived in Equestria and began sowing chaos. Many tried, however none who did were able to defeat Discord, his magic too strong and far reaching. He even went so far as to declare himself monarch, though it was clearly for a laugh. He had no desire for leadership, even as a tyrant, and as far as anypony knew he took the title merely as a trophy.

Celestia and her sister were called on aide the newly united country in its time of need. The battle lasted several days, but in the end they were able to defeat Discord and imprison him in stone, using artifacts known as the Elements of Harmony.

The aftermath of the conflict with Discord left Equestria battered but relieved. With the immediate threat defeated, the focus was shifted to reconstruction. Given their central role in Equestria's rescue, as well as their own academic histories, Celestia and Luna were offered leadership positions. Both took the title of 'princess', choosing it for being a non-threatening title, and to avoid association with tyrants in nearby states.

Performing both the duties of heads of state and those of moving the celestial bodies, the sisters quickly fell into a routine. Once again, their was a period of peace. And once again, it was too short. Being the princess of the night, Luna became frustrated at the disproportionate amount of attention given to her sister. As most ponies went about their business, including petitions, during the day there little left for her when her time came around each evening. This asymmetry drove her to jealousy, and though for a time she resisted and was able to perform her duties admirably, even a mind such as hers can only take so much.

Finally, Luna could stand no more. Overcome by her jealousy, she transformed into a violent creature which called herself Nightmare Moon and attacked Celestia in an effort to take control of the nation. Caught by surprise and hesitant to attack what was still essentially her sister, Celestia hesitated with her response. After a few unsuccessful attempts at negotiation, Nightmare Moon almost got the best of her, and in a last, desperate effort Celestia used the elements of harmony to banish her sister to the moon.

With Nightmare Moon contained, Equestria was safe once again, but now Celestia found herself alone in leadership. While the ponies celebrated another trial weathered, Celestia put on a smile for their sake but she just felt...empty. What happened with Luna came as a shock to her, both her sister's actions but also that she allowed things to get to such a state. For some time she just felt devastated.

She couldn't fully rest however, she still had her duties to perform, and in that she found a means to take her mind off of the incident. She threw herself into her work, exhausting herself in the managing and improvement of Equestria.

In time, even this succumbed to routine. Though she never forgot what happened to Luna, her focus shifted to other things as she realized that she could not be a good leader while perpetually tired and distracted. Though remaining dedicated to her work, over time she relaxed. She still lead the country, but her focus shifted from active rule to a more subdued maintenance of systems she felt were already working, until overtly she merely had to nudge Equestria in the right direction every so often.

Centuries passed in relative peace under her guidance.

One thousand years passed. Celestia knew that the moon would not hold her sister forever, and further that the day of her escape would come soon. And when it did, all of Equestria would be endangered once more.

But she had not been sitting idly by. Though other concerns were always more immediate, Celestia's thoughts often wandered back to her sister, though she seldom shared any of them. No reason to concern her subjects over a matter centuries away. In the midst of her other duties she began to observe, to study, to plan and where necessary to engineer experiments. It took a century for Celestia to even developed a strong concept, but for a being like her and an issue like this it was no time at all. She discovered an alternate possibility for the Elements of Harmony, which she had been forced to use to imprison her her sister, and began arranging things accordingly.

She was actually between attempts when the thousandth year rolled around. Her recent apprentice had defied expectations and turned on her, and although Celestia had chosen another she had her doubts about the new mare in her current state.

Still, she was nothing if not prepared. She had developed a contingency for such an occasion. She'd chuckled inwardly when Twilight Sparkle had written to her with concerns about the Mare in the Moon, and began writing her response. She assured her personal student that there was nothing to be concerned about and that the young mare should instead focus on making some new friends. Though actually well aware of the danger, Celestia had tried the direct approach in the past, and found it wanting. If there was to be any worthwhile success, it was going to require more than just a head on confrontation.

With Twilight sent to the location of the Elements, and given subtle instruction, all that was left was for Celestia to wait for her sister to act.

Everything worked as she'd hoped, in the end. The plan had been risky, but Twilight had pulled through, confronting Luna with the Elements and in doing so dispelling that which made her into a monster. Celestia felt a contentment and peace that she hadn't felt for almost 1000 years.

Celestia invited Luna to live and rule beside her in Canterlot. Together again with her sister, Celestia hopes to lead Equestria through a similar period of peace to the one they knew before.

Character Summary: On the surface, Celestia gives the impression of a gentle and understanding, if somewhat aloof leader. She goes out of her way make time for anypony (or anyone) who needs her, and can generally be seen acting as a level head during periods of tension or strife. If she has a major flaw, most would agree that they're not sure she does any actual ruling. Though always on hoof to settle disputes, these are often as small as being between individual ponies. It is very rare that she makes anything resembling a royal decree or civic management, to the point where some doubt if she maintains any role in running the nation at all.

This is a carefully crafted public persona. Centuries of being in a leadership position have given her a certain appreciation of indirect methods. Much as she aims for a peaceful rule, she understands that a nation such as Equestria cannot exist without attracting some enemies which must be opposed, and this deceit helps her balance these two goals. Further, presenting herself as an obvious but static public figure could often provide a distraction from any more covert action she might initiate. She became something of a manipulator out of habit and necessity.

And yet, despite this she's never fully lost touch with her core principles. She still believes in the value of honesty, kindness, generosity and the like despite having to discard them during various incidents in the past, and does her best to both adhere to them as much as she can and inspire them in others.
