Cutie Mark Story- Her parents were small business owners that ran into a particularly ugly group of diamond dogs as they traveled to their new home in Ponyville. Nopony was hurt, but the family's belongings and business interests were stolen. In order to be reimbursed, the family had to itemize, catalogue, and otherwise form a list of all things that were lost as well as their cost. Her mother and father were understandably distraught and were too busy trying to find a short term solution to things such as food and lodging. With her parents unable, Mayor Mare tried her hoof at it. It was hard walking about town and finding the items that had been lost and as a new filly in a new place, she faced a certain degree of resistance when she asked about personal business statistics. It was only through her calm, trusting demeanor, way with wards, and appeals for help that she was able to get it done. When all was said and done, she was able to get the vast majority of what her family had lost reimbursed and got her cutie mark, which represents not only her ability to deal with paperwork and help achieve something important through hard work. It also further symbolizes her ability to do so with a certain charm and quality of character that helps her get past the defenses of others.

Character History-

Mayor Mare was born to loving parents who despite their Stalliongrad upbringing were well-traveled and engaging to the outside world. They were traveling business ponies who made a conscious decisions to see the world rather than seek the safety of a large city, which gave their young daughter a wonderful perspective on the world. It was wild mix of accents, ideas, thoughts, opinions, colours and scenes and she ate it all up. This perspective that was cultivated throughout all of Equestria would come in handy later in life- not just as a politician, but as an Equestrian through and through.

She did not attend a standard school. Instead, her parents were equally well versed in many of the classical subjects and the little filly also learned through experience the art of mathematics and science. This education was tempered easily with the hard lessons of a family on the move, from how a family unit had to pull together in dire circumstances to pass a harsh storm or even how to prioritize on a daily basis when you were stuck in the middle of nowhere for the winter. The family made the most of this, however, as in every negative there was a positive. You could learn when the storm outside was rough and when it passed, even if you were stuck, fun could be had. Snowpony construction would not become a major force in her life as she grew older, but the little filly certainly would have enjoyed it if her life passed with such bliss.

The family business did well enough that her parents saw no need to end it either until, when she was but a little filly, an injury to her father cutailed his physical abilities. No longer able to continue their wandering, the family chose the new and booming town of Ponyville to settle down. After an unfortunate entrance to the town(see the cutie mark story), the family settled comfortably. Well, except for Mayor Mare, who had grown up a wanderer and found this new sensation disconcerting. For the next few years she did her best to pass everything off as fine, but wanderlust is a hard thing to fight and she had to be content with simply wandering the town. At the time, this compulsion was a reflex of necessity. In her later years, the many bonds and friendships she made would prove to be the building blocks of Ponyville's bright future.

At the time though, all she could focus on was where she was going to go to next. Finally attending a real school, Mayor Mare proved herself leagues beyond her peers in almost every conceivable category. The long nights spent riding out the storm, seasons stuck in motion, and the carefree trots and discussions as the family traveled had been used wisely and she had the sort of education that most had to attend private schools for. From the moment she had arrived, Mayor Mare was the most intelligent filly in the whole school and as she entered marehood, her great acumen the classroom gave her the chance to continue her wandering ways.

She was accepted into a prestigious Canterlot university and didn't waste a moment in making a name for herself, doing well in her studies and taking time out of her day to meet with and learn about her peers. She found that names, dates, problems and solutions came to her swiftly and she was never at a loss for words. With her kindness and administrative ability leading the charge, she was elected class president all but one year- and that was due to family drama.

Her parents were finally unable to run the business and Mayor Mare felt a certain obligation to come home and run it. She was able to work out an arrangement with the university whereby she could do her work from afar, but it was of little use. Her parent's business lacked the sensibilities that the young mare fund herself drifting toward and after a few years of relative failure, she closed the shop down (providing her parents with a good retirement) and with a degree and some funds, took to Equestria once more.

Using the connections she made at the university, she found employment- and not for long in any one place. An administrative book-keeping assistant in Trottingham. Helping tabulate the farm output of Fet Loch. Tax collector in Baltimare. City Charity Supervisor in Manehattan. Orphanage Protection Administration in Canterlot. Food Bank Assistance Distributor in Las Pegasus. The list wasn't endless, but it was long. There was one common denominator across each one: The ponies of Equestria, from the newborn foals to the elderly, all required the help of somepony who wasn't just there to fill out paperwork, but made executive decisions with their very personality and views in mind.

She was amazing in all these fields, her ease with decision-making and administrative tasks not nearly as helpful as her ability to sympathize with those she served. Job from job, her reputation in reputable government circles grew over the years as nary a complaint was lodged and she completed her tasks with aplomb. As she grew older, the wanderlust that defined her started to fade and she looked to Ponyville to set her roots. When word was passed around Canterlot of her desire to move back to Ponyville- she was the Orphanage Protection Director at the time- it didn't take long for a position to be offered to her. The previous Mayor of the small city had retired, and nopony could think of anypony better suited.

She took the job and the rest is history- and as she would have it, the history is being made by her Ponyvillians, not her.

Character Summary-

Mayor Mare's older age masks in many ways an energy and drive that can be seen by the way the light in her eyes sparkles and twinkles when she sees a job completed to the satisfaction of the townsfolk. She has a sincere desire to see those around her empowered by her decisions, and for the people of her town to make their homes in peace and quiet. Her experience growing up on the road and dealing with ponies of all types and stripes has given her a wealth of experience that comes in handy whenever a new crisis pops up, and as a result, few things bother her for any real time and she reacts to incidents within her purview with swiftness and decisiveness.

One should not mistake that for her being in any way overbearing. Her view has always been that unless help is needed, she and other officials should stay out of the way. Ponyvillians don't need a celebrity or somepony who needs to be assured of their own righteousness; they need somepony taking care of the mundane tasks of government that help provide them with the peace and tools they use to make their own way. She does her job quickly, kindly, and without mucking about. She can often be seen in Town Hall, doing her paperwork while cracking a few jokes with her assistants and always ready to jump at a problem. More importantly perhaps, she is eminently approachable and whether the problem is big or small she always takes the time (when she can make it, at least) to help a pony out. She maintains an open door policy in Town Hall for just this reason.

While much of her day is spent on the town's affairs, she maintains an active social life that sees her spend her free time meeting with friends young and old. Being a leader of an Equestrian city is a constant learning experience and knowing what makes the freshest foals to the most aged mare tick helps her as a leader of ponies. Of course, her joy and happiness are tempered by a focus on what needs to be done. She is dilligent and treats everypony the same when it comes to the affairs of governance, for good or ill. For all of her happiness and desire to please, she will never allow a personal friendship to stop her from doing what needs to be done.

Outside of her work when all things are told, her social life revolves around small social events that allows her to interact on a personal level with her charges. Few things are as pleasing and relaxing as a nice trot about with an old friend recounting their day to day or as amusing as watching foals at play. She isn't hard to please, after all.
