History:

Born to a well to do if somewhat uncultured pair of transplants from Mustangia and Manehattan alike, Rarity grew up in the small town of Ponyville without much in the way of worry. Her parents were able to provide her with a charmed upbringing, small town charm mixing well with their ingrown geniality while their big city experiences afforded them the ability to indulge young Rarity's passions. With a room to herself and being the only daughter of a well-off family, she was spoiled almost rotten. Her parents taught her right from wrong and to be humble and generous, but it was almost too little against the almost non-stop barrage of toys and gifts.

What stopped her from going down the spoiled rotten route was looking out at her friends and seeing others who didn't have the things she had. She gave away her toys almost too often, her parents being stuck between being proud at her generosity and upset that her room could look bare as a result of it. Nonetheless, they were happy to see that she was a good little filly, and this eventually extended to her receiving her first set of sewing materials and fashion accessories in an effort to help a somewhat hopeless farmer filly look fabulous. While that effort proved a disaster- some ponies didn't want to sit still and be made to look all pretty, after all!- she found herself entranced with the idea of fashion design.

She started making clothes and costumes for anypony and everypony who asked...and some who didn't...and the joy of creation was strong with her. Eventually she was asked to make costumes for the school play, which she did with a great deal of energy! But alas, while everypony else loved the costumes, they did not meet her demanding specifications. She started to make new ones when her horn lit and dragged her here, there, and everywhere until she found herself in front a giant rock. Bemoaning her fate briefly, the sonic rainboom split it up and revealed beautiful gemstones inside! Rarity decided to add these to the existing costumes to jazz them up, earning both the admiration of the crowd and her cutie mark.

After that she devoted herself to learning more and more about fashion, becoming not an obsession but a beloved choice of career. She attended several beauty summer camps and then the prestigious Manehattan School of Design in her older filly years. There she got a personal taste of big city life and an education second to none. She proved a natural in most fields and what few areas she was found lacking in initially she would prove to be a sponge at, soaking in all possible sources of knowledge. She graduated top of her class and was given a large loan from a wealthy alumni to open up a shop in Manehattan.

But life took a turn. An accident on the job meant her parents were sideline for a while and unable to watch her younger sister. Unable to leave them at such a time, Rarity had to turn down the offer from the wealthy alumni and decided to return to Ponyville. The alumni was very disappointed, but still wanted to support her and gave her a much smaller, but still significant, loan with which to start a business in Ponyville. Carousel Boutique was built soon afterwards and served as home for the two sisters as well as her business. After almost a year, her parents were well enough to watch over Sweetie Belle and Rarity was finally able to focus almost full time on her business. From there she quickly created an impression of beauty and loveliness through her clients and became Ponyville's premiere fashion designer and all around aesthetic czar. Business boomed until she was put in charge of the aesthetic preparation for the Summer Sun celebration. It was there she made a new friend in Twilight Sparkle...

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Character Summary:

Pride in her work is a virtue when it is bred by such a beatific desire to do well and see the inner beauty of ponies around you. Rarity believes earnestly that just about everypony she meets is capable of great things and has an inner shine to them that she can help bring out through sheer unmitigated beauty. She does tend to view the world through the lens of beauty and fashion, seeing both simple and attractive designs as well as gorgeous, intricate patterns in all things when she allows her creativity to run wild. She can turn any garden variety cloth into a world-class design with it, and through her, almost any pony can shine as the brightest star. And in doing so Rarity can help ponies see in themselves what she sees in them. She is exceptionally friendly and is willing to indulge in others.

This is just one of the many forms her generosity takes form in, though some may not see it that way. She will give you everything she can of herself and more if it means helping you out, and she goes to great lengths to provide for those around her as well as deserving strangers. She gives to charity often, eclipsing the efforts of whole families at times. She hosts monthly contests for local groups- schoolfillies and colts, REA members, etc- with winners earning deep discounts, even free, work from her. But her charity is not boundless, because generosity can breed contempt if you allow others to take advantage. That and it could become bad business!

And she is a very smart, savvy businessmare, perhaps owing it to experience and learning that great design does not immediately lead to success. She wants to live the high life and has learned how to budget to give herself a taste of it without going overboard. She is a big city mare with big city looks with a small town friendliness to her, which is often mistaken by naivety by those in the big city and haughtiness to those in the small town. The truth is a mix of the two, with her big city desires and mannerisms not really permeating down to her core values, which are Ponyville bred through and through. She is a world class designer on top of being a good busnessmare. Her designs grace the cover of magazines and the bodies of pop stars as well as those with stars in their eyes and a few bits in the pocket. While she expects to be fairly compensated, she never allows herself to focus purely on any one demographic. While her personal tastes are somewhat set in stone, she makes haute couture designs for all sorts of ponies.

Vanity is a major flaw, however. A lot of how she feels about herself is tied up in how others perceive her. Her sense of self-worth is partially on display, and she is eager for positive responses and feedback from others. Negative feedback is either taken very poorly and she reacts aggressively or it is taken poorly and she deflates, almost instantly forgetting how excellent she is at her chosen path. She will often use her feminine charm on anypony whom this would work on, and does so shamelessly. She is a flirt beyond compare when she wants to be. She has an active social life, but has some problems committing to ideas that don't appeal to her, and holds a higher esteem for activities that are along her proclivities.

Looks fabulous darling :)

Here's your RP prompt:

How can you make the character unique, interesting, and expand on them beyond what we've seen in FiM? What happens after the episode ends? That is a question cast players are asked to answer. For your RP prompt, please give us a short example of the character doing what they do best. Be as creative and detailed as possible, and play them how you would in a live, opening roleplay. Be sure to finish your prompt with an opening for another character to realistically reply.

Rarity wiped the sweat off of her brow. This had been a harder than average design portfolio, compounded by the changes in direction she had received from the client thrice. Who knew that a well to do family in Stalliongrad could be soooo picky? She supposed it was the same for all her clients, though. They wanted- no, expected the best of her, even with the changes to the design metric. And she was happy to oblige, both as an artiste and as a respectful business owner. But that didn't mean it came easy, made clear by the torn and parched fabrics that cluttered her workspace in the early morning hours. Thank Celestia she was done and wouldn't have to open late- one day would have been one day too many for her.

The art was worth it. The mare's dress was marvelously iridescent, bringing out the high-party lifestyle with simple and elegant eye-catchering moves of color in the light. It could emphasize what Rarity had been led to believe were a quartet of very attractive limbs while not being overly suggestive, with elegant stitching and trim exiting at all the righ points. The stallion in play had desired something with a bit of formality that also called to his Army days without being overbearing or attention-getting, desiring subtle changes that only those who knew what to look for would appreciate. A single breasted peaked lapel in midnight blue with, gaitered to the fetlocks- that would do just fine. Together they looked divine and despite having to redo the pair multiple times, she was pleased.

"Well, now that that's done I can get to the real work of the day," she said with a chuckle, making sure to freshen up first. Ponies expected a certain aroma when the entered here and sweat-stained workmare was not one of them. She washed, dried, brushed, primed, redid makeup, stretched, washed up again, and finally felt fine enough to get to the day. Carousel Boutique could have gotten along just fine without all the preparation as a great deal of Ponyville would have been none the wiser as to the finer points of presentation, bbut Rarity wasn't going to slack off simply because ponyville was more forgiving of such transgressions. It was a town that deserved her finest efforts, after all.

Rarity unlocked the door and opened the blinds. With a satisfied sigh she pushed the door open.

"Carousel Boutique is now open!"
