Roleplay Type: WoE

Name: Kaede Katsuo, with his given name translating into "Hero"

Sex: Male

Age: Young Stallion

Species: Ryuma (a native term used in place of the more widely recognized Longma)

Eye Colour: Vivid red-orange

Coat: Dusky rose. HIs right foreleg and left hingleg have two socks that are very dark blue in color, almost edging towards black. The scales he sports on his underbelly, haunches, and wings are bright silver in color.

Mane/Tail: Platinum blonde, with pale blue streaks that gradient towards a deeper blue running throughout both his mane and tail.

Physique: Like most of his kind, Katsuo's body is lithe and slender, moreso than the ponies of the West. The Longma has kept in shape his entire life, and it shows with a trimmed and athletic body.

Residence: None, as Katsuo is currently free roaming the country, looking for purpose in his life. He originally hails from the far east.

Occupation: Wandering swordspony, an archaic profession that doesn't leave Katsuo with much of a career. To help his traveling, he will take on odd jobs that are usually labor-focused, and on occasion sometimes acts as a bodyguard or escort for a pony, or group of ponies. He refuses mercenary work, however.

Cutie Mark: A stylized dragon clutching a red maple leaf.

With his family focused on members excelling in academics, Katsuo labored through math and science lessons that he took little interest in. The young Ryuma grew restless, bored, and increasingly resentful, but dutifully continued with his studies. He started spending more and more time wandering however  - with every break in studies, he was out in the countryside, searching for something he himself didn't even know.

It was during one of these outings that he went to a traditional temple nearby his village, an old relic of an ancient time that had long since lost its original purpose. Katsuo immediately noticed a robe-wearing Kirin inside the temple, swinging a katana up and down at a slow pace. Curious as to what he was doing, the young Ryuma approached to ask, and learned that the elder was practicing something he called a 'kata'. More intrigued with the shiny sword than anything, Katsuo proceeded to ask more questions about who the elder Kirin was and why he was swinging his sword up and down, and humoring him, the other explained how he was a traditional swordspony practicing an ancient and somewhat dead art.

Having been brought up with dreams and goals about science and technology, it all sounded like something straight out of a storybook to Katsuo, this tale of a traditional lifestyle. Almost immediately after hearing the end of the elder Kirin's story, the young Ryuma decided he, too, would become a swordspony of old, and gained his cutie mark thereafter. Taking its appearance as a sign, the elder Kirin offered to take Katsuo on as an apprentice, something the Ryuma eagerly complied to as he began dedicating his mornings and afternoons to studying, and his evenings to training.

Unique Traits: With his desire to emulate a more traditional lifestyle, Katsuo began training under an elder Kirin in the art of the sword, a fact that translates today into a figure almost cut out from storybook legend. An expert swordspony who favors the katana, Katsuo sacrifices defense in favor of power and speed, and is adept at disarming his opponents of their own weapons. The Ryuma also favors wearing traditional wandering swordspony robes, clothing that tends to make him stand out nearly everywhere he travels to.

While breath magic was not popularly emphasized at his home, Katsuo managed to learn some of the art from his first mentor, and later on from other Qilin. What he did learn was mostly constituted of the art of enchantment, using the varying breath magics to imbue objects with certain properties. Katsuo specializes in enchanting his own self rather than other things, such as his weapon or robe - with the right combination of breaths, he can temporarily make his body as hard as rock, or cause his katana to take on elemental properties. Outside of enchanting, Katsuo is modestly talented with the breath school of Fire but no others, managing at most a good fire breath that really does nothing but set things on fire.

Given his penchant for drifting to and from places, it is unsurprising that Katsuo took up a couple of instruments in order to liven his wanderings. He is fairly skilled with the biwa, a three-stringed lute with a high neck, and the ryūteki, a reverse bamboo flute. The biwa he usually only carries on himself while he's traveling, but the ryūteki can usually be pulled out at a moment's notice, or whenever the Ryuma simply feeling like absently playing a song.

History: In a small village in the far east, Katsuo was born into the Kaede family on a blistery winter's evening, much to the delight of his two parents and one grandfather. Settled near the outskirts of a larger city, Katsuo enjoyed long days roaming through the countryside and tasting food samples in the open markets, though as the first born son, his family began quickly molding him to become the eventual head of the family. From statisticians, scientists, analysts, and eingeneers, the Kaede family had long revolved around the maths and sciences, feeling such areas of study were necessary for beginning a good career and supporting the family, and Katsuo was quickly molded to take on a  similar role, so that he might be prepared to take over as head of the family in the future.

Like all his relatives before him, Katsuo's playful days of roaming the countryside soon ended in favor of stringent lessons and education, mostly focused on his maths and sciences. With a restless drive an affinity for activity rather than learning, the scholarly activities were hard on Katsuo, who struggled with them even as his parents continued to push him in his academics. Katsuo dutifully persevered for a while, each year growing more restless and unhappy but still wanting to please and uphold his family's wishes, as had been done for generations. For several years after earning his cutie mark, Katsuo managed to stave off suspicions from both his family and his mentor, persuading the former he simply studied outside sometimes and the latter that he had full permission from his family to train. Things finally came to a head, however, when a misstep accidentally had him followed by one of his siblings to his training, followed by the subsequent revelation to his family.

While his mentor was upset with the grandiose lie, the disappointment from his family was astronomical. Immediately blaming his inability to keep up and excel with his studies on the distraction of sword lessons, Katsuo's family prohibited him from continuing them, intent on pushing for a better education. Now a young adult, the Ryuma firmly rejected the notion of continuing the family tradition, and against his parents adamant wishes, finally left his family to pursue his own goals and dreams.

Given the emphasis on family and the adhering to one's elders in the small community, Katsuo might have found himself somewhat ostracized for so blatantly shaming himself by abandoning his family if he had stayed. However, the young Ryuma's only reason for staying in the area - to continue training with his mentor - proved moot, as the older Kirin refused to take him back under his wing, due to the dishonorable lie he'd fed his mentor. Seeing no other recourse, Katsuo eventually scrounged up his savings to purchase passage to a new land. There, Katsuo continued training with his sword, and even learned more of the art of breath magic from the Qilins in the area.

Being a traditional swordspony left little motivation in his life, however, as his passion to learn the ancient life style had been more an expression of rebellion against his futuristically focused family. As a result, Katsuo had no purpose, no real reason to train and learn other than to better himself. Eventually, his new mentor suggested that he travel around for a while, to try and find some place to fit in. The restless Ryuma liked the suggestions, and it wasn't long before he'd packed up his belongings and headed westward - all the way westward, to a land called Equestria. His traditional robes and katana fit in even less than they had at home, but Katsuo was pleased and eager with the idea of exploring a new land and new culture. He currently travels around the strange new country, a wayward soul in the wind as he searches for a place to call home.

Character Personality: Bold, cocksure, and restless, Katsuo is a young Ryuma who has his entire life ahead of him, and he knows it. With no ties to anyone and no one place to call home, Katsuo's personality seemingly reflects his drifting nature. Like a leaf caught on the wind, Katsuo has a tendency to let life lead him wherever and whenever it does. Relaxed and laid-back, the Ryuma takes life one day at a time, both taking care of the necessities while fulfilling his own desires. With a penchant for letting worries slide off him into the background, Katsuo seems to epitomize 'vagabond', almost to the letter. While most ponies will fret about the future and plan for disaster, the young Ryuma would much rather let what happens happens, and deal with it then.

That is not to say that Katsuo is a calm individual, however. While smooth sailing equates to a relaxed and easy-going individual, rough waters can easily stir up his passions. Katsuo is bold and brash, and usually the first pony to raise his voice in a situation. He has no problem expressing his opinions and attempting to get other ponies to see and take his side, though his methods of persuasion usually consist of yelling the loudest. Katsuo holds no hesitation in speaking with others, or acting with social niceties, or passively waiting for his turn to speak or act - despite his affinity for letting life itself sweep him wherever, the Ryuma himself tends to take day-to-day by the horns. With his self-imposed localization to areas with more traditional elements than modernized ones, Katsuo is sometimes caught by surprise or confusion over modern-day machines, technology, and advances, leaving him to loudly and brashly demand an explanation from the nearest pony.

Despite the fallout out he had with his family, Katsuo remains a loyal Ryuma at heart, an ingrained part of his psyche that defends what's his with all of his passion. Any foul word against his family can be sure to be met with either a drawn katana or a deadly glare, or even a sudden brawl. His loyalty extends to others that earn it, though the restlessness inside Katsuo that drives him to search makes it difficult for the young Ryuma to settle down anywhere long enough to make lasting relationships. This emptiness and longing search to fill the void leaves Katsuo with a greedy streak, whether it be materialistic or otherwise. The Ryuma always seems to want more in life, more food, more friends, more knowledge - just about anything, a fact that is sometimes detrimental to his own well-being. Even Katsuo himself doesn't really know what he's searching for, even though he ostensibly claims he is simply looking for someplace to settle down and call his home.

Character Summary: Though he may seem like a figure stepped out from a far eastern tale, Katsuo is anything but. A wandering soul with a desire to find some purpose in his life, the young Ryuma is a bold and confident stallion who has no qualms charging at his problems head on, even as he allows life to carry him on a breeze one day at a time.

Alrighty, I've conferred with my RPH buddies. While I do rather like this app, the general consensus is that the backstory relies too heavily on Lore that has yet to be officially unveiled. Since it isn't really all that fair to base your OC app on information that other users are not yet privy to, my recommendation is to shelf your OC for the time being until the Lore's all ready to go. As you've mentioned elsewhere, you weren't really planning on using this OC right away anyway. :P

Ooh okay, sorry. Guess I was confused, since another application made edits based on them not adhering to future lore.

Changes have been made!

Sorry for any confusion; most other users are on a need-to-know basis concerning unreleased Lore. That way, we don't create misunderstandings in the event that we make changes to in-development Lore before release. Anywho, I don't see anything here that I'd fine objectionable in any other extended-canon species apps, so I'm going to recommend this app for second review. :)
