Roleplay Type: WoE

Name: His full name is 玉 名中志  字陰 (Xìngyú míngzhōngzhì zìzhōngyīn) , but  中志” ( zhōng zhì) is what everyone calls him. Or Calamity.

Spoiler

玉 名中志  字陰 is roughly translated into: surname yú, name zhōngzhì, second name zhōngyīn. Second names are traditionally reserved for male educated members of a successful household.

Meaning:is his family name: jade.  Like the rare nature of high quality jade, only the worthiest members of the Jade household are allowed to bear the sacred name. Obviously, he's one of these worthy characters. 中 means balance,  while 志 means intellect, ambition, and power. 陰 is the dark side of the ying and yang. In other words-his name revels in balance, wisdom, and power.

His titles: His Honor Royal High Censorate of the Imperial Watch, Royal Guardian of Nature, Honorary Jinzhou of the 19th Squadron (aka. His security guards),  Dictator of Fortune, etc.  He has many different titles-official and unofficial, derogatory and optimistic-but the only that really usually matters is ‘High Censorate of the Imperial Watch’.  But because of his unique abilities to sense when something is wrong (and his habit of calling out ‘calamity’ when that happens), most of the Royal Household uses “Calamity” as a nickname for him.  It used to be derogatory, but his close friends started calling him that as a joke. Soon enough, it was the name he called himself as well.

Sex: Male

Age: Older Qilin. But just as cunning and smart.

Species: The magnificent race of Qilin. He comes from the best.

Eye colour: A one-eyed Qilin, this old folk's 'window to his soul' is a sparkling emerald. Literally and figuratively.

Coat: His coat is an opaque green, and his scales are a pearly white. Some of his scales were 'lost during battle', and have been replaced by fake scales crafted from pearl dust. But because he is so awesome and likes the whole world to know of his beauty, his entire body shimmers a light dust of sparkling blue.

Mane/Tail: His mane is long and white-but moreso like long tufts of fluff than a cascade of hair. His tail is a medium length, around the length of his gorgeous body. The tufts of hair around the ends of his tail are just like his mane-long in tufts of fluffy white. There are vague streaks of grey through his mane and tail hair...because he is an older Qilin.

Spoiler

The White: I mean, it's just a normal white.  #FFFFF

Physique: He's a really long Qilin. Almost too long, but not quite there yet. He's very agile and quick, and seems to slide from place to place. He's not very muscular, and doesn't look quite fit either. But that's the best part about him: looks are decieving. You'll never expect the wimpy, long Qilin behind you with 'grey hair' to strike~

Residence: Huangjing. Oh, and he goes wherever the Imperial Watch, or the Empress or Royal Court requires him to be.

Occupation: High Censor of the Imperial Watch. The most awesome Qilin in the world (Yes, this is an actutal job-it's quite strenuous, too! He has to look awesome all the time~)

Cutie Mark: A not-so-calming image of a sword and a pen. A play on the tradition 'the pen is stronger than the sword', his cutie mark represents the dual-sides of every situation, and his ability to take advantage of it. The blade of the sword is-in fact-a white feather; and instead of flowing hairs at the tip of the Chinese calligraphy pen, a black jade blade. The whites and blacks represent the importance of balance, as well as maintaining fate and karma (and not to try to hard to change your fate). His cutie mark represents the gift of his vision-like dreams: which he gets though many days of medidation. Unfortunately, most of the visions make no sense unless put into context-and usually consist of either a random scene or somepony saying a sentence. (Scene example: A group of ponies eating dinner in the Royal Mess Hall. Sentence example: "Roar like a tiger!")

He was but a young Qilin when meditation was added to his daily routine-next to studies and social parties. He had complained to his personal servant about 'having too much to do, and not enough time to do what he really wanted,". Upon further investigation, it was realized that he wanted to spend some time to think. The good servant brought it up when the Lady yú asked how Calamity was doing-and Meditation soon became part of his master's everyday life. As the Qilin grew, he found himself enjoying these meditation sessions more and more. He began pilgrimages to different areas of Long Guo-trying to find what he was missing. When he was at home, though, his meditation sessions could last for days at a time. He felt calm and at peace with himself...or, in other words, full in understanding of balance and karma. One day, while meditating, he heard the voice of his mother; then saw her face. "Forget the pies," He was startled awake from his session-and absolutely confused at such a vision. It was well known that the top meditators could find visions of the future, but his just made no sense. He stumbled into the hallway, hoping to ask his personal servant about the vision-when he saw his mother talkig to his sister. "Forget the pies". And it all made sense: His mother was lecturing his sister about eating their luscious pies while out on charity runs in the poverty-stricken areas of the city. As time passed, he realized he could access these odd visions with days of meditation and balance...to this day, he always remembers to keep some time every week to think. Few ponies know about his special ability-and most can assume his cutie mark a a simple symbol of balance and life.

Unique Traits: Being part of the Imperial Watch is quite rewarding...but also a bit taxing on your limbs. Actually...it makes you lose your limbs. Literally. The work he's done hasn't just been dangerous, it's been limb-threatening: hence the Emerald eye, as well as some 'pearl-dust-created' scales. He has quick reflexes and is extremely agile for his age, and he has enhanced senses. Both qualities serve well in his line of work, and were accumulated after years of hard training and playing in the field. He is also gifted with visions that usually illustrate a specific event or happening in the future. He embodies the powers of the Qilin-adept in the magic of dragonbreath. His dragonbreath magic is directed towards the fields of instinct. He can sense when something is wrong, or feel it when something from his visions is coming true. Whenever these moments happen, he uses his dragonbreath magic to strengthen his senses and to divulge the situation.

History: Born into a wealthy, established family-Calamity's childhood was filled with politics, drama, and the Imperial Watch. From his paternal side-being part of the Royal Guard or Imperial Watch was a tradition-and only the best of the family's stock made through the tough regiments. From his maternal side-being educated in dragonbreath, sciences, and arts were the best way to go. His father was rarely at home, leaving him, his mother, and his younger sister to their own devices while he was on duty.

At first, he was educated by a family tutor with his sister. But as his sister's talents bloomed (she was a talented dancer and calligraphy artist), she was given private classes under the instruction of well-known artists. He had taken a more educational view to things-abeit his meditation breaks. He went to study the sciences in another city, and he was proven very smart and adept at quick thinking. When he began to show an interest in joining the Imperial Watch, his father began watching him more closely. The things he found no trouble doing took the attention of several royal court members: playing clever tricks during the test ('On this map, state where Long Guo is located. The middle.), lying, planning elaborate plots on his classmates, helping a classmate cheat a Royal Examination, taking control over classroom politcs, turning a joke on him into his advantage, and other things that would make him a valuable member in court. But his father quickly saved him-taking Calamity under his tutelage to shadow him in the royal court. Calamity shadowed it so well, that he-in fact-began scheming and manipulating all the things around him without anyone taking notice. He always had an excuse up his sleeve, and did legitimately feel sorry when his tricks ended up hurting someone. He was brought to train with the Royal Guards, and excelled immensely. He was able to apply all the education he had recieved, the sense of balance that he had, the cunning mind he possessed, and the quick instinct he owned to pass all training camps quickly. By now, many famous Royal Court Members had taken an interest in him-offering him different positions under him.

When he turned to his father for advice, all he found was a sickly old man dying from an illness he had caught during a previous mission. He was distraught after his father's death. Despite the old Qilin not spending much fatherly time around him, he admired his father more than anyone. For a while, all of his visions stopped coming, and he stopped meditation completely. His mother used this opportunity to take a change in the daily politics and drama of life-and settled on a resort on a faraway beach. His sister, however, was not faring so well. See-she had been the one tending to father during his days of sickness-and it seemed that she had caught on as well. Calamity spend his days moaning over this misfortune, and he spent most of his time regretting not always being there for his sister (instead of actually spending her final days with him). He completely broke apart when she left the world, and his heart hardened against all that existed. All the kindness he had previously had-all the things that made him special to the royals (being able to be such a good Qilin despite going through all the hardships of the Royal guard training and court life)-disappeared. He crafted different 'masks' for himself to hide his pain-and to provide a reason for himself to get up and do something.

So, he joined the Imperial Watch.

He was successful in all his missions, and used his ability to his advantage.  He learned that everything could be twisted-and always for the better of himself.  He climbed the ladder to the top quickly, not hesitating to kick those off that would have taken his place.  He learned to be ruthless.  But most of all, he learned to forget.  The pain he had hidden so carefully had almost completely disappeared-filled with a new sense of purpose that only he would understand: Power.  All the power he had lost from the people he had loved, he felt, needed to be replaced by physical titles.  When he became the High Censor-all he saw was the throne at the very top.  To this day, he needlessly ceases to plan how to 'kick' the Empress of...and of the Qilin that would take her place.

Character Personality: Cool, calm, and usually collected (unless he senses something wrong), Calamity is...a strange fit for his job.  He plays many personalities and faces: acting like the wise old man to younger member of the court, pretending to be a caring paternal figure to new members of the Imperial Watch, being a kind Qilin 'grandfather' to the Children of the city, as such.  No matter what role he chooses to play, he always appears kind and loving.  He will smile at everypony and tell them that 'it's okay' when something seems wrong, and make each and everypony feel special.  Even on missions, his demeanor constantly changes.  He will never stay for too long as one character, opting to switch between different kind figures instead.

Who he really is, though-is something he hides inside beneath the masks.  He is tough, unrelenting, and cold.  He will do anything to finish a job, and will not hesitate to destroy everything in his path.  He is manipulative, cruel, and harsh-words that spill out like the water flowing beneath the oils of kindness.  He find wrong in everypony, and endlessly ceases to exploit those loyal to him.  In other words-he's dreadfully selfish.  A terrible, horrible Qilin.  While his public life is all about keeping up a front of kindness, generosity, and loving care; his private life is spent calculating every move to give him greater benefit.  Inside, though, he is a broken Qilin.  His life hasn't been easy, and the things that have fallen before him are not ones that he would wish upon anyone.  If someone could strike a chord...maybe he could have a heart.  For now, nothing will ever break his mask, and he will do anything, anything, to prevent the situation from happening.  He constantly seeks to go higher in all aspects of life...and the next step:

Get rid of the Empress.

Character Summary: .Do you want a cold, power-hungry, manipulative Qilin that can see glimpses of the future and sense when something is wrong (and play the role of a kindly old Qilin that cares and loves everyone)?  Well~you've got him.
