Zeig

Maybe, roughly...two hours of work, for this one?

Like many dragons, greed is one of Yuri's character flaws, though it's yet to really come into play in an RP. Still, I got inspired to draw an adult Yuri who was unable to fight a greed-induced growth spurt, resulting in her rational mind deconstructing down into an unthinking and avaricious beast. It'd be a pretty sad end for a character like Yuri - luckily, she's accumulated quite a few friends who could potentially snap her out of it. A rampaging Yuri might be fodder for a future RP.

The face was heavily drawn from Miyazaki's work, because I could not figure out how the world to make a dragon snarl. Turns out it's all in the furrows of the snout/eye ridge and creases of the mouth.

I be honest with you Zeig, IMO this doesn't suit her. At all.

I may be a little biased but I never was fan of...mammal snouts for dragons. It reminds me too much of Falcor from Never Ending Story and as such I am unable to treat it seriously unlike, say Dragonheart and it's dragon Sean Connery. Still it doesn't change the fact that picture is really neatly drawn from you part.

The problem with reptiles is such that they don't have facial muscles. At all. Even the jaws themselves can move in one way - as in open/close and that's it. The only exception from this are snakes thanks to the fact that their lower jaw is not fused with the rest of the skull.

That said, I don't really think that dragons need facial expressions at all to be terrifying. Especially an adult ones. Just look at Leventhan from Odin Sphere for example.

This is really expressive and well done; you captured a great amount of detail for such a short space of work time.

You're really an incredible artist, Zeig.

Yuri looks like a hungry wolf! Like you said, Miyazaki's work, like the wolves from Princess Mononoke.

Is that the point, a hungry wolf's expression as her maturity to greed? It is interesting, but a bit off-set for a dragon.

Yup, that's the sort of look I was going for - a hungry animal that only operates on instinct, with hers specifically being greed for more stuff. Probably greed for more pony friends, lulz.

And no, the point is that some eastern dragons are depicted with more mammalian features, i.e. the nose and snout, fur around their faces and heads, the same way they have long and sinuous bodies instead of large bodies with wings like western dragons. If the RP forums weren't essentially frozen in time, this is pretty much what Yuri would grow up to look like, except with softer, more feminine features. That's what her dragon species looks like. It may not fit a conventional dragon look that people are used to, but Yuri's not a conventional dragon. The look perfectly fits Yuri's softer, more expressive, and puppy-like nature.

(And I actually used Haku from Spirited Away as a reference, not wolves from Princess Mononoke).

Hey thanks Harmonize, I appreciate the comment. Don't forget to leave a "Like" if you like!

I see! Good to know.

This idea would definitely make for an interesting RP. The creases in the snout and face are fantastic, and the tongue hanging out looks especially beastly. I also have to point how how much I like the circular shape of the clouds. It gives the picture a dynamic look, and so does the very well drawn perspective of Yuri herself. Very awesome while at the same time unsettling. I love images that make me feel conflicting emotions. XP

I could see inspiration from the great Miyazaki all over this even before I clicked for the larger image! :) Great work!!! As usual you've got your talent shining! I always love seeing a new Zeig pic up when I come on the site.
