  2. In case you guys haven't heard the news, I'm getting married!  :-|

As a result, things have been kind of going insane IRL for me as I try to pack to move, plan a wedding, and squeeze in real life goodbyes before I disappear into the Midwest.  I can't give a definite time frame for getting settled back in, but it will be no sooner than 6 weeks.  Until then, my presence will be sporadic at best.

I apologize for any hanging RPs I'm in. I will see what I can do to squeeze in some posts when I can.

Please direct admin inquiries to moderators and SRP!

  3. As many of you know, we have been fighting the old forum software since before the server move, especially the archiving system.  There was a bug in the system that caused data loss in some old threads. As a result, some older character applications no longer exist, even if the character is still in play and the player is active in the community.  After some discussion we have worked out a bit of book keeping policy for this problem.

Let me make this clear from the start: your characters will not be unapproved or taken away for lack of application.  This announcement is simply to provide a pathway to rebuild an old application without having to submit to the entire applications process again.  This process is optional.  If you do not wish to build a new character sheet for your character, that's okay, too.

The process will be as follows:

    1. If you have a character who was affected by the archival bug (ie: lost application data), you may create a new application for that character using our current application form.

    2. At the top of the application form, please link to the damaged application thread for that character so we can verify that this is a character you own and that you were a victim of the archival bug.

    3. RPH will verify your information and mark the application for proper sorting once again.

    4. Now you have a restored reference sheet for your prized RP character!

As usual, if you see any bugs or glitches, please report them to the staff via PM or email at Canterlot.Guards (at) gmail.com!

Thanks for sticking with us through everything thick and thin, everypony!  You guys are what make this community great!

  4. I start work this week and due to unforeseen circumstances my commute will now by 90 minutes each way. I will do my best to stay on top of things, but on days where IRL and admin duties compete against RP, I will be forced to choose admin and IRL. Sorry for my RP slowness, folks! You'll still have me on weekends :)

You do not need an approval stamp to play as your FFA character!

This also means that you also do not need to put WIP or READY tags in your character sheet.

This subforum is for you to post character sheets that you and other players can reference in your RPs. There is no standard format for character sheets in FFA. The standard World of Equestria character sheet will be reprinted here for reference.

    Be creative and have fun!

Topic Tags: Please add appropriate tags to the Topic Tag field under the Topic Title.  At a bare minimum, this should include the "OC" tag for original characters, the "FiM Cast" tag for cast characters, the name of your character's species, and your character's name in "oc:NAME" format.

Name: Names must be in the flavour of the roleplay and species. Names are subject to staff review and discretion.
Gender: Female or male is fine for this field.
Age: Any age that is not numbered. Young, old, teen, filly, mare, colt, stallion are all fine.
Species: Refer to our species list for acceptable species for play in Canterlot Chronicles.
Eye colour: Eyes that relate to the species are fine. Any colour is fine, though be reserved with use of glows or strange pupils.
Character colour: What colour is the character?
Mane/Tail/Other: What colour and style are the mane, tail, hair, etc? Other: Do they have any accessories like hair bows, an eye patch, or braces?
Physique: How is the character described? Can you get a good visual idea of what shape they are? Anything different about their body should go here (lost wings, broken horns, an extra toe, etc.)
Residence: Any location on our map resources is acceptable, including Ponyville.
Occupation: What does the character do? If they don't have an occupation, what do they do in their free time?
Cutie Mark: Applicable to pony species only, including Zebras. Adult ponies must still possess a cutie mark.
Unique Traits: This is a new space where players can list fun things about their character. Do they carry swords, specialize in ice magic, or do they like to bust flight tricks? Beware of characters that want to be analogous to Cast or emphasize power over a certain other character.
History: Just a brief history of the character is fine. No reason for a fanfic here. They may mention family if they'd like, but focus should be on this character.
Character Personality: What are they like to meet personally? Try to push away from introverted -- it makes no sense for a social roleplay. If they want to be socially cautious or shy that's fine.
Character Summary: Everything about the character should be nicely summarized here.

Admin Edit 8/7/15 : This sub-forum area may now be used to place character log threads as well. ~ Rose

    Q: Who can donate?

A: Anyone with more than three posts can donate. This means members, RP certified, and RP apprentices.

Q: Where is my money going?

A: Your money will go into a Paypal account used by Canterlot.com to pay for server upkeep. You can view transactions, donor history, and current balance in the Canterlot Ledger.

Q: What do you plan on doing with surplus donations?

A: A portion of any funding surplus will be allocated for board traffic reserve. IPS cloud services are billed based on average number of users per 48 hour period. While we do not anticipate huge traffic variations, it is possible that average online users can spike during events (as demonstrated by the Crystal Faire 2015). The reserve will help smooth out server costs over the course of any given year. Further surplus may also be allocated for projects such as website front end improvements and additional plugins for expanded board functionality. We will also look at using surplus funding to purchase contest prizes and other goodies, though our current priority is to keep the server running and the board functional.

Q: Will you ever use ads?

A: We plan to run small, unobtrusive ads to assist with server costs. Code implementation is still in progress.

Q: Are you ever going to offer subscriptions?

A: Subscriptions are the model we are aiming to use, but like the ads system, code implementation is still in progress. Subscribers will be exempt from seeing ads on the page.

Q: Will there ever be any perks to donations?

A: The only currently available perk is the cosmetic donor badge. We will try to offer more tangible benefits with future updates. Stay tuned to this section for updates as they are deployed!

    Q: How do I donate?

    A: Using the following steps:

    1. Go to Paypal.com
    2. Click on the "Send" tab.
    3. In the "email or phone number" field, type in CanterlotLedger@gmail.com
    4. Type your selected donation amount in the appropriate field.
    5. Click Continue.
    6. Log in to your Paypal account to send money.
    7. Review your information.
    8. Add a note to the donation with your forum handle so we can credit you with the donation! If you wish to keep your donation anonymous, please indicate it in the donation notes.
    9. Hit "send money"
    10. You're done!

Q: Are you offering any other means of donation?

A: We are currently only accepting Paypal, but are researching other payment methods. Please watch this forum for updates!

Q: I have another question! What do I do?

A: Post it in this forum! We welcome feedback so we can better serve the community!

We will continue to improve the donation process as time goes on. Our aim is to keep the donation process as transparent and streamlined as possible. Any feedback on the system would be appreciated. We're all learning this together, so help us help you!

Thank you for your donations and your support of Canterlot.com. Together we will make this a great place for all pony fans!

  8. The Canterlot.com Roleplay World

Wonder where "place" is in our RP world, or looking for a location to start a new thread? Well now you have a central repository for all the maps and locations for the magical realm of Equestia and the lands beyond! This is the comprehensive location guide with maps and links to all regions. As with everything else this guide is open to future refinement and expansion based on revelation by show canon and created content by the users.

    A Brief F.A.Q

For organizational purposes the world used for our World of Equestria and Canterlot Chronicles games is divided by catagories that represent geographical hierarchy:

    So what are provinces?
A province is the top category that holds either a large geographical location or nation state. There are three provincial level sections: Greater Equestria - Which holds all the lands of the ponies. Aquella - Home of all the Griffin territories. The Outlands - All the peripheral lands outside the first two provincial locations. Provinces as far as RP are concerned are top level forums that are simply containers for all the related regions (or sub-forums) for the sake or RP section organization. One never posts directly into the root of a province level forum.

    So what are regions?
A region is a subsection of a province created to better organize the RP; they correspond to a geographical location within the Province. For example: Greater Equestria is divided into the following regions: Borderlands, Heartland, The Foothills, The Stand, and the Frontier, each representing a relative geographical position as indicated by the ( ) (parentheses) following their name. It is under the region level forum where one would post their RP thread.

    So what are landmarks?
A landmark is a city, town, or geographical feature within a region (Examples: Ponyville, or Whitetail Wood). These are the specific locations referenced for the RP thread itself. They are not forum categories, but instead are tags one can assign when one creates a new RP thread under the appropriate region forum.

So how do we figure out the location of the place we want to RP In?
Listed below are the RP landmarks in each region that has a tag associated with it. In addition, each link has a more detailed regional map of that region is provided to show the relative location of the landmark, as well as additional names of nearby geographical features one is free to reference to describe additional locations within the RP thread if one so chooses (Note: This isn't a list of every possible geographical feature in the land, just the major ones, so feel free to name your own small brook, or rock, or other minor feature in your RP if it helps the story)

How does this all apply to Canterlot Chronicles?
Canterlot Chronicles uses the same world locations and map as World of Equestria, but is divided in a far simpler fashion. The Canterlot Chronicles roleplay section is divided in two into a Mainland and Outlands. The Mainland contains all of Greater Equestria and its locations. The Outlands, meanwhile, consists of all the areas outside of Equestria's boundaries, including Aquelia, the Badlands, Unyasi, the Crystal Empire and beyond.

  9. Free RP Rules

The Free Roleplay sections of Canterlot.com, by design, have little in the way of set rules. That said, this does not mean these sections have no rules whatsoever. If you intend to partake in the Free Roleplay sections, keep the following in mind:

    • All content must still follow Site Rules and Expectations for Conduct. Make sure you are familiar with the rules listed here before posting anywhere on the forum.
    • Pornographic roleplay of any type is prohibited in all sections of the forum.
    • Sexual roleplay or solicitation of sexual roleplay from minors in forum or private message will be dealt with very harshly.
    • Roleplayers should strive to respect one another. Listen to your roleplay partners and try to treat others fairly. It's more fun for everyone that way.
    • Obey the rule of consent. Players are not required to acknowledge actions that have been forced upon their characters without prior agreement. Players who godmod or otherwise compromise the RP game for others will be reprimanded.
    • If the staff need to interject in a roleplay for any reason, please be understanding and respectful. (Although if you read and follow the rules, this should not happen.)

  10. World of Equestria RP Rules

The following is a list of rules that apply to the World of Equestria Roleplay Environment. Please take the time to read and understand them before participating in the RP as they will be enforced.

    RP Applications

    • The World of Equestria RP allows for two varieties of character to be applied for: cast characters--the familiar characters seen within My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic--and original characters--new characters designed entirely by the applying user. For all characters, a character application must be submitted in the form specified Playable Species List. Characters need to be from one of the listed playable species.
    • Original character applications need to be posted as new topics in the Character Applications section. To keep the number of pending applications to a minimum, only one application titled as READY and one titled as WIP (Work In Progress) are allowed at one time.
    • Your Roleplay character will be assessed by an RP Helper, who may request changes be made in regards to character design. Once the RP Helper is satisfied, a senior RP Helper will review the app and, if satisfied, give it an approval stamp. A Senior RP Helper may also ask for edits to an application.
    • No previous relationships with any cast characters will be allowed within original character applications unless a player with that character has given their approval.
    •

    Roleplay Etiquette

    • Sexual roleplay, intense violence and gore are not allowed within the World of Equestria roleplay. Romance and relationships are okay, as is mild cartoon violence; just remember that adult content is prohibited on the site. PG/PG-13 is the watchword.
    • Roleplayers in the World of Equestria must always be sure to respect the boundaries of the other players in any given roleplay thread. Users should never take control of other players' characters without permission, and should try not to have their characters take complete control of the events in a thread. Please remember that roleplaying is a collaborative process.
    • Respect the posting rules set by the player who has started the roleplay thread. If there is a turn order, wait your turn. Do not double post in roleplay threads or post OOC (Out Of Character) posts.
    • Never intrude in roleplays marked as private, closed, or Invite-only without contacting the roleplayers involved in the thread first. If you are unsure if a thread is closed, consider contacting the topic starter first.
    • Roleplayers should strive to be courteous and try and interact with as many users who post in a roleplay thread you are involved in as possible. No one likes to be ignored.
    • Roleplay posts in the World of Equestria section should ideally be at least a full paragraph in length. (This means a minimum of five complete original sentences.) This is to ensure quality and so that the current roleplay has enough to build on.
    • If the staff need to interject in an RP for any reason, please be understanding and respectful. (Although if you read and follow the rules, this should not happen.)
  11. OKU9Mogl.jpg

I've since done some more effective cable management and pulled some of my unused HDD trays so it doesn't look like such a mess inside. I just haven't taken any case shots since then

    Spec Sheet

    Case: Thermaltake Chaser Mk. I

CPU: Intel Core i7 3770K (Ivy Bridge) overclocked to 4.2GHz

CPU Cooler: Corsair H60 closed-loop liquid cooler

    RAM: 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X @ 1600MHz

    Motherboard: Intel DZ77BH-55K

GPU: Asus GTX 660 Ti DC2OC overclocked to 1145MHz

    PSU: Corsair HX650

    HDD: WD Black 7200RPM 2TB

This was my first build and after some tweaks and swapping out a lemon HDD, I'm happy with it. It runs BF4 smoothly with some settings optimization and every other game on pretty much max settings. I'm planning on adding an SSD and maybe an upgraded GPU down the road. I have to focus on securing a new job first.

  12. Derp, I forgot about RAM

For your purposes, 8GB in 2x 4GB sticks running in dual-channel mode should be plenty. Corsair and G.Skill are good brands. Troll the internet for deals and make sure they're pin-compatible with your motherboard. You might also want to do some research to see if there are any model incompatibilities, since that may happen from time to time.

You can get the specs I'm running in my rig in my user profile. My machine was around $1300, so it's close to the price point you're looking at.

There are loads of tutorials, build guides, and recommendation videos scattered all over youtube. Linus Tech Tips has very good comprehensive build guides that are very professionally made and the guys Linus works for have a great reputation.

  13. You'll be looking for a mid-tower case then. It balances form factor with space for expansion if you want to add on to your build later in your university career. I like Corsair as a brand, but I've heard good things about Fractal cases as well. I like Intel kit, so I'd recommend an i5 processor. For your purposes you can probably skip out on the K processors (unlocked for overclocking). You won't be needing an SSD, so just pick a large capacity HDD. You can get a 1TB drive for around $80 off Newegg. I like Western Digital as a hard drive brand.

I recommend Corsair power supplies. In addition, your $1200 budget should give you room for a Corsair H60 closed-loop liquid cooler for your CPU. It will make your rig quieter and it's more efficient than the stock air cooler that will come with your CPU.

Asus makes good motherboards, but I've also seen Gigabyte and MSI recommended. You can also go with the Intel-branded mobos.

Finally, for your graphics card, an nVidia GTX 760 is a great mid-range card and should be more than enough for your gaming needs. There are different brands of coolers and PCBs for the same GPUs, but I like Asus' cooler design and tuning software, so I'll recommend their DC2OC series cards.

Halide might also have some more information to chime in with since he actually works in a computer shop while I'm just a hobbyist.

EDIT: Forgot to add on a bit about OS. I think everyone is still comfy with Windows 7. Windows 8.1 allows you to boot into desktop mode, which I'm told replicates the functionality of W7's desktop and it gives some very good performance gains in some pretty intensive games like Battlefield 4. I haven't used enough Windows 8 enough to give it a vote of confidence, but I'm told it's not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. When in doubt, choose Windows 7 x64.

  14. Further thoughts:

I feel like this episode represents a significant tonal shift for the series. I won't quite say that the content is darker, but it is certainly more mature. Instead of reacting like scared fillies or using Pinkie Pie's laugh trick like in "The Mare in the Moon" (S01E01-02), everypony in the Mane 6 knew their places and handled the enemies they confronted with swift, decisive action. They were willing to proceed at great risk and without complaint to accomplish their mission.

In addition, the dialogue seems less "kiddy," with the Mane 6's individual mannerisms coming across in their way of speaking rather than in the dialogue itself. The show grew up and even though it was wholly unexpected, I like it a lot.

Also that scene when Twilight cries over Celestia, where the music completely cuts out and it's just silence is far more impactful than I thought it would be. If we get more moments like that in S4 (in terms of impact, not in terms of ponies nearly dying), I'll be super happy.

  15. Changelings
When you can be anyone or anything, who are you?

    eSwGlmR.png?1

Until recently, changelings have appeared regularly only in myths, legends, and old mares’ tales. Any prior historical references were short, sparse, and lacking in detail. Since the attack on Canterlot, however, new information has come to light. The changelings that attacked Canterlot have a very characteristic appearance: their bodies are roughly equine in shape, having four legs and a mane and tail. The changelings in Canterlot were seen to have different body shapes and sizes, much like ponies.

Unlike ponies, however, their bodies are not covered in hair, but instead a shiny exoskeleton-like skin, much like an insect. Changelings appear to bear the marks of decay on their bodies; their limbs are pocked with holes and dimples, their manes and tails are wispy and brittle-looking, and their wings appear torn and ragged while still granting them flight. A shell-like structure covers their backs where an ordinary pony would wear a saddle.

A changeling’s key trait is his or her ability to shapeshift. Scholars of magic suggest that this ability is a “glamour,” a special spell built specifically for deception. Changelings appear to be able to cast glamours naturally. During the transformation, all of the physical features of the identity they steal are recreated perfectly, down to the last hair.

The glamour, however, is merely cosmetic. It only alters the changeling’s appearance and does not grant them access to the individual’s personality, memories, or unique mannerisms. Close friends can easily unmask a disguised changeling who is acting “out of character.” Changelings appear only to be able to assume the form of somepony close to their size. Most changelings appear to be within the same size range as ordinary ponies, save for the queens.

Based on what is known about Chrysalis, queens stand taller than their broods, being proportioned more similarly to alicorns than average ponies, though her physical traits remain similar to lesser changelings. Like the smaller changelings, Chrysalis showed marks of apparent decay, with pocks in her wings and her legs and a crooked twisted horn upon her head. Her wings and mane and tail were similarly ragged and worn-looking. It also appears that queens can extend their glamours into powerful charm spells, preventing all but the most strong-willed of individuals from seeing through their deception.

The actions of Chrysalis and her brood left a lasting mark on Equestrian views of Changelings in general. Since the only recent contact with changelings was during the Canterlot attack, very little is understood about changeling motives other than their overwhelming hunger for love. This hunger seems to be an intrinsic part of their culture, leading scholars to ask questions about where it came from in the first place. Due to the visibility of Chrysalis’ attack on Canterlot, It is easy to assume that changelings are malicious creatures willing to do anything it takes to acquire love, even if their methods are less than scrupulous.

Still, there are some scholars who are reluctant to believe that Chrysalis and her hive should serve as a benchmark for the species. Scattered reports suggest that there are other extant hives ruled by other queens whose methods differ from those of Chrysalis and her brood. Some even say that these other changelings already walk among Equestrian ponydom today! These claims, however, are unsubstantiated and require further investigation, research, and perhaps diplomacy.

  16. For what it's worth, the campaign's gameplay is significantly improved from BF3's campaign. They give you plenty of tactical options and lots of eye candy. The real problem is the writing. Even Michael K. Williams can't make up for formulaic plot and disjointed storytelling. Then again, can you expect much more from a game whose main draw is multiplayer?

Multiplayer is a blast. Vehicles are powerful, but not gamebreaking, and infantry weapons feel nicely balanced against each other. The firefights are fast and furious and positioning matters just as much as having the biggest gun or the quickest reflexes. Basically, BF4 is everything that BF3 should have been. While it's not a revolutionary game, the refinements and additions to the craziness keep it fresh and exciting.
