Actually the trees were inspired by the Black Locust, an actual tree that has long thin strands that hang down. It's a very beautiful tree. Found a picture of it online seen in the Spoiler tag.

He is an older stallion although not Granny Smith old. His beard, mane and tail were always white but now showing signs of grey. 

Yeah, now that i look at it, the mustache would look better where you said. 

My inspiration for the beard and mustache came from Pai Mei in the Kill Bill series.

Well, these are the steps I do for all drawings:

1. I hand draw a sketch, scan it, and upload it onto my art program.
2. I create a second layer and trace the sketch (sometimes a third if there is a background), then delete the sketch layer. 
3. Depending on the art, I either create one more layer for coloring or, with ones that have a complex backgrounds, two additional layers (Foreground/ character coloring and Background coloring)

So you have a layout in the end that looks like this:

I may try eventually separate layers for light and shading as well as one day try to draw start to finish on an art program rather than sketch on a piece of paper.

Lightning Bliss is indeed a great reviewer and very nice to others. This piece wasn't bad to draw as I first thought (I had trouble drawing rainbow ponies before like Rainbow Dash).
