  1. The Serpent King and the Serpent Council - Paragons of Peace Since the days long past, when the younger races were still at war with one another, the Serpent Council and their King have observed from their sky bound city of Longri-La, far above their sacred lake. When the heroes Xi Hua and Xiao Huo arrived, the elder dragons declared that their trials were a success and sat them upon the path to uniting their peoples. When at last the two succeeded, the serpents gave them their solemn vow that, so long as they and their descendants uphold balance and peace, they will be their teachers, mentors, guardians. And so too would they give wisdom and advice to the worthy who venture to their lake, now named in their honor. Forevermore the Council has kept its Pact, helping the royal family and lending their aid and wisdom to the worthy few who seek them out. All while tending to their duties within the city of Longri-La and working to keep the Sacred Lake Huahuo safe from the unworthy or those who would wish to do it harm. The Serpent Council consists of five Elder Serpents and their King. The Council are chosen for their wisdom, passion for their field, and desire for inner peace. Each of the chosen councilmembers preside over a district of Longri-La, as well as dole out advice pertaining to their areas of expertise. The Matron, who holds demesne in the Mu Xizang Nursery, cares for the nursery where the young—both eggs and hatchlings—of serpents who have either passed on, left for extended meditation, or for other reasons are unable to care for their children reside. The Matron oversees this district and is often sought out by new and prospective mothers who require their wisdom, or when they fulfil their part of the Pact to apprentice Imperial Foals. Often the Matron is seen to represent a mastery of ‘Wood’ aspects, both personally and magically. The Luminary holds court over the Fenghuang Gardens where they tend to the gardens, tea houses, and shops that dot the sprawling area. As the dragon representing the ‘Fire’ aspect, the Luminary is often the most passionate of the Council and works closely with everyone that they can to help them find their passion, be it in work, play, or love. They also oversee any group activities that the city holds for holidays or celebrations, to spectacular effect. The Steward is the master of the Suncrest Landing and usually the first member of the Council that the few travelers who scale the peaks of Mount Suncrest meet. Stalwart and unyielding, but joyous and agreeable, the Steward embodies the ‘Earth’ aspect and is often counted as the most diplomatic of the Council. When someone needs advice on nurturing the earth or their health, or when a painful truth must be revealed, the Steward is the first to answer the call. Aside from this, they also oversee the physical training of Longri-La’s defenders. While the serpents desire peace and enlightenment, they are keenly aware that not everything can be answered with words alone, but physical answers should be only the last resort. The Artificer takes care of the Zhingzhue Workshops where Long artisans craft various trade goods, jewelry, and of course Long Pearls! The Artificer is a master craftserpent, befitting of their nature as the ‘Metal’ aspect and can often be found training prospective crafters or advising Long Sun on topics of business and craft. While Longri-La does not particularly export their goods for monetary gain, the Artificer helps to keep track of bartering and trades between both serpent dragons and the travelers that occasionally find their way to Longri-La. And finally, The Archivist is in charge of Shuǐguī Lyceum, which is home the Shuǐguī Athenaeum a mindbogglingly large and extensive library of books and scrolls of both magical and mundane nature. The Archivist’s duties consist of cataloging the vast swaths of knowledge within Longri-La, as well as overseeing the enchantment process of the Long Pearls that come from the Zhingzhue district. Their advice on topics of magic is indispensable to any who seek out such knowledge. The Archivist's wit, gentleness, and erudition ties them closely to the ‘Water’ aspect that their magic reflects. The Archivist also tends to the magical training of Longri-La’s defenders. Elder council members will often take on one or more apprentices, young dragons personally chosen as prospective replacements for the member when the decide to retire. Each council member has different trials or lessons they put their apprentices through to test their mettle, and one can never be sure what requirements will be placed on them, other than a desire to keep Long Guo beautiful, harness their inner balance, and to master their art. Above but equal to these Five is the Serpent King, Sovereign Ruler of the Long. The Serpent King shares many responsibilities with the Councilmembers, aiding however possible. So too do they aid or judge the ruling Imperial Family accordingly. Few though they have been, there have been times in the past where the Serpent King has denounced an Emperor or Empress for their actions, refusing to help them, sometimes going so far as to hinder their ambitions should they cause harm to the land or others around them. But what makes a good ruler is a just heart, and so the Serpent King judges not the child for the actions of the parent, only for their own. In diplomatic matters overseas, it is often the King and another chosen member of the council to travel and meet with those who have invited them. Traditionally, the King will bring a gift, a enchanted pearl shrouded in flameless and colored fire as a present to be conferred at the end of a meeting, should it go well. Within the Dragon’s Heart, the keep turned temple that sits at the center of Longri-La, the Council and King meet for various matters concerning the city, the country, or the goings-on of the world as a whole. Often they are privy to many things beyond Long Guo, thanks in part to the mystical scrying pool that lies in center of the temple. Though much time has passed since the founding, the Council and its latest Serpent King still uphold the Pact, keep watch over the land, guard their sacred pool, and share their knowledge with those who have earned it. ~Journey to the Dragon Lands Ashley ‘Ash’ Ravencrest
  2. The Imperial Watch - The Guardians in the Shadows As an ancient Long Sun proverb states; “One cannot shine light upon an object without creating a trail of darkness in its wake.” Just as the radiant emperors and empresses of the Dragon Kingdom are mandated to bathe their subjects in the glow of prosperity, others must work in the shadows to thwart all who’d scheme against Long Guo. From the time of the First Imperial Sovereigns, ruling dynasties have counted upon the mysterious cadre of loyal servants known as the Imperial Watch to serve as personal bodyguards, investigators, and agents. Crafting a reputation as crafty and disreputable enforcers, Watchers exchange a life of honor and glory for the opportunity to serve the Emperor by striking fear into the hearts of would-be traitors. Volunteers joining the Imperial Watch must first make it through a grueling evaluation to test their physical fitness. Those deemed worthy then undergo rigorous training in martial arts, acrobatic obstacle avoidance, and dragonbreath techniques. Training for the Watch also features intense mental conditioning, through which recruits eventually learn to venerate the Emperor above all others, even family. Every Watcher swears an oath to renounce all claims to filial inheritance, to never take a lover or raise children, and to carry out every command of the Emperor. Despite these harsh restrictions and the stigma surrounding the organization at large, the Imperial Watch carries a strong appeal to martially gifted Long Sun lacking attachments to friends, family, or the teachings of the Harmonious Path. After making it through training, Watchers finally earn the right to wear the distinctive outfit of their cadre: a black brocade uniform embroidered with yellow dragons. Their primary mission; to investigate government officials, military commanders, and influential citizens suspected of involvement in criminal activity. In this task, the force is assisted by a cultivated network of spies and informants. Should the Imperial Watch discover evidence of corruption or treason, it will arrest and punish wrongdoers as the Emperor sees fit. In addition, Watchers are entrusted with the vital responsibility of protecting the Emperor and the Imperial Palace. Regardless of the task at hand, Watchers count on surprise, agility, and intimidation as their greatest assets. Members of the Imperial Watch serve until released from service by the Emperor or are otherwise no longer fit for duty. Life for Watchers is difficult; stripped of private lives and condemned to infamy, it’s no surprise they are persistently tempted to secretly break their oaths. Yet Watchers who meritoriously serve while staying true to their oaths can expect to win the everlasting favor of the Emperor at the end of their long and perilous careers... and all the rewards that come with it. ~The Secret Testament of Emperor Xin
  3. The Wonderbolts - Heroes of the Sky In Equestria, few groups are more looked up to than the Wonderbolts. As the premiere aerial demonstration team of the land, ponies naturally look upwards to see their dazzling maneuvers. But aside from that literal sense, the Wonderbolts represent some of the most cherished qualities that pegasi can have. All who take up the blue and yellow flightsuits, and the winged lightning bolt insignia of the Wonderbolts, earn that privilege through demonstrating steadfast integrity, the will to go the extra mile, and the ability to work together with, and trust completely in, their teammates. The origins of the Wonderbolts go back to about a millennium, to the first-year anniversary of the formation of what’s now the Royal Equestrian Guard. To celebrate this event, General Firefly was tasked with organizing an elite unit of fliers who could dazzle crowds with awe-inspiring aerobatics. According to stories, that first public performance, where magical lightning bolts rained down from the superbly energetic fliers, inspired so much wonder in the onlookers that henceforth, the royal aerial demonstration would forever be known as the Wonderbolts. Entrance into the Wonderbolts is no easy feat. Typically, members of the squadron are chosen from among the best fliers in all branches of the Royal Equestrian Guard. However, civilian pegasi also have an opportunity to prove themselves by enrolling in the Wonderbolts Academy, a mountaintop school of hard knocks specifically designed to weed out all who can’t live up to the values of the elite airborne unit. Those who make it through the initial training and the battery of grueling written tests are expected to partake in a grueling schedule of airshows all across Equestria, and even beyond. Training never ends for this team; the Wonderbolts practice constantly to maintain peak condition and coordination at all times. Fliers who don’t train are a danger to the entire team; a single slip-up or mistimed move could potentially result in ugly crashes and more. But despite the hard work and the risk, many pegasi dream of joining the Wonderbolts one day. Those few who take up to the heavens to perform Bomb Bursts, Diamond 360s, and Icaranian Sun Salutations are regarded as idols by young and old alike. ~REG Recruitment Brochure
  4. Royal Equestrian Guard - In Service of All Equestria Once upon a time, Equestria didn’t require a unified defense force. Princesses Celestia and Luna, empowered by the Elements of harmony, shared the responsibility of keeping their kingdom safe from malevolent forces. Those few ponies who took up arms as a profession did so only in defense of their homes, and were not organized under any central authority. After Luna’s banishment to the Moon however, Celestia found that she lacked the ability to defend her subjects alone. Therefore, she encouraged the local militias to unite as one force, utilizing the combined strengths of earth ponies, unicorns, and pegasi to fill the void left by Luna’s absence. Through a thousand years of changes, this defense force is now known to all as the Royal Equestrian Guard: champions of Equestrian pride, sovereignty, and magnanimity. All who sign up to join the Royal Equestrian Guard (REG), as enlisted recruits or officer cadets, must first undergo rigorous training. Under the nurturing supervision of noisy drill instructors, new prospects learn about pushing their bodies, solving problems in high-stress situations, and what specific jobs within the Guard fit their natural talents. More vitally, recruits and cadets alike are expected to grasp the importance of teamwork, understand the value of peacekeeping over hostility, and cultivate strong bonds of camaraderie with fellow soldiers and commanders. Anyone who can put aside their selfish dreams of glory for the welfare of their unit, and Equestria, will find a long rewarding career in the REG. Characteristic of harmonious ponykind, the Royal Equestrian Guard frowns upon the use of violence to maintain peace. As a mainly pacifist organization, it lacks the capacity to wage war on other realms beyond Equestria. Instead, the Guard’s primary duties involve law enforcement, investigation, logistical support, and diplomatic escort. An extension of their role as guardians is to keep wild beasts such as timberwolves and hydras away from settled areas. When humanitarian assistance is required, the REG is often the first to respond, as their strong logistics infrastructure and large horsepower pool can be ready to bring aid at a moment’s notice. For a millennium, harmony has thrived in Equestria thanks to the tireless efforts of the entire Royal Guard. However in recent years, these brave ponies with their impeccable service record have faced some of their most challenging threats yet. Without question, the REG will have to adapt in order to remain an effective force for good. But even when evolving, the Guard remains committed towards never giving into the temptation of responding to war with war, and to spread peace instead of destruction. ------ Here is a list of the main branches of the Royal Equestrian Guard: Royal Equestrian Army - Famous for their characteristic historically-inspired armor, the Army is the most visible branch of the REG. Exceptional members of the army are assigned to the Princesses’ Honor Guard, who have the responsibility of safeguarding Princess Celestia in Canterlot and on diplomatic visits. The Imperial Guard of the Crystal Empire, the protectors of the Crystal Princess, have recently been integrated with the Honor Guard proper as well. Perhaps the most mysterious army offshoot is the Lunar Guard, the personal bodyguards of Princess Luna. Unlike the rest of the Army, Luna’s guards wear special dark-colored armor and are seemingly comprised exclusively of areion, colloquially known as “bat ponies”. However from time to time, normal ponies are also inducted into the Lunar Guard. Royal Equestrian Navy - Sailing on majestic steamers, the Navy keeps the seas of Equestria safe to travel on. Mainly, they rescue sailors and other ponies caught in shipwrecks or other maritime accidents. Once in a while though, the Navy is called upon to force underwater monsters back to the depths of the deep ocean, or to deal with disruptive pirates. ~REG Recruitment Brochure

  6. I just wanted to clear up something that I've been wondering about for a while, mostly because a future OC may have relevance to this question and somepony else may need to refer to it in the future. So, if I had a character who wanted to join a pre-established group (ie. the REA or the Shadowbolts), would I be required to ask the leader/creator of that organization for permission for my character to be a part of it? I'm pretty certain I know what the answer will be, but I thought I should ask all the same.
  7. I’ve been noticing quite a number of ponies have been running into trouble with their RPs because of their OC character belongs to a organization and to get said organization approved for lore takes a lot of red tape. Let’s say for the sake of argument, I have an app for an OC character called Big Top, his occupation is that of a circus owner. From here 2 things can happen: I write the lore for his circus. After a week or so of squeezing the creative juices for an initial draft and a month of debate and haggling over the minor details with and within the admin team; the Equestrian version of the Cirque du Soleil is formally introduced to Canterlot.com with open recruitment for anyone who wants to be part of the circus (similar to the Wonderbolts and Shadowbolts) OR I scale down his operations so he’s more of a traveling sideshow operator with about 5 acts that are all pretty much offscreen or NPC characters, and hopefully he can pass application assessment more easily. The point is I’m proposing a truce, the RPers can have their OC character belong to some organization that, while is not what they initially envisioned, still fits their character and the mods don’t have to be stuck between shooting down another’s ideas or the work of effecting QC on the lore so it fits into board canon.
  8. Some of you may have noticed a new section pop up in the Mane Equestria section. This area has a special purpose. Even though it's in the Roleplay Forum itself, it's not actually a Roleplay area. Many of you have had questions or ideas about how to expand the world of Equestria as a roleplay, but until now it's been somewhat scattered and difficult to pin down. Well, the Princesses have decided to open up the Royal Archives for public access! Though submissions must be made to and reviewed by their loyal staff (Simply make a post in the Questions and Suggestions and Private Message the staff) if you have anything you would like to add to it! It's still somewhat under construction, but we'll do our best to provide you with all the information we think you will find useful and interesting about the world of Equestria as it's been established in the Roleplay. This lore is specifically for the Mane Roleplay Equestria, though elements of it can be used in other roleplay areas. This is also where you're going to find answers to some of your most deep and burning questions. Want to know just howadvanced the technology is in Equestria? Want to know about Electricity? Have an idea of where Parasprites come from, and local cures for that pesky Pruney Hoof? It will end up here! Roleplay elements that may be useful for other players as they have established Equestria will appear. As we work out the components of Equestria as it's been established, it will be up to you users to bring things to the staff for consideration. We can't do it without you! You can find the Royal Archives Here. Please mind the dust!
