  1. Winter had been wrapped-up for a good twenty-four hours, but for Inkbrand, it almost felt like he was still sitting in the middle of Fluttershy's house, wrapped in blankets and huddled for warmth against Brooke. Well buck, he hadn't exactly minded that last part, but the point remained the same. As if he were still feeling the effects of that nightmarish blizzard, Inkbrand let out a sudden sneeze, grunting and rubbing his hooves together a bit, even though the small house he was renting was warm and cozy. Just remembering that freak blizzard seemed to bring back down its unnatural chill - though, with a quick glance outside, the grey Earth Pony could clearly confirm that winter was good and over. Outside of the small rented house near the outskirts of Ponyville, the green grass was growing tall, flowers were starting to bloom, and the blasted animals that had nearly frozen to death were all frolicking through the tulips - or whatever wild animals did during the spring. "They probably need help finding their rear ends every other night," Inkbrand groused to himself as he moved away from the window, opening up the fridge to rummage around in it. Lettuce, lettuce, and more lettuce. Ooh, and one plump strawberry. And buck, a mushroom! Had he even bought that, or had it grown sometime during his stay, what with his leaving the house unattended for long periods of time? However it had gotten there, the sight of the fungi was enough to back-pedal any thoughts of food. Instead, Inkbrand bypassed his meager meal offerings towards the back of the fridge and grabbed up a can of beer, before shutting the door with one hind leg as he meandered over to the couch and flopping down like a beached whale. Alcohol on an empty stomach was never really a good idea, but meh. Maybe August would feel charitable enough to treat him to a decently sized meal in town today. Hah! Inkbrand popped open the can to take a satisfying chug of the drink, even as his eyes drifted over to the clock hanging on the wall. The Pertyon was suppose to be swinging by today to visit him in Ponyville, which suited Inkbrand just bucking fine - in a town like Ponyville that seemed to shift from extreme bouts of boring routine days, to crazy Twilight Sparkle-induced magical mayhem, a visit from his best friend would be off the charts. He hadn't even bothered locking the door, sure that August would just saunter on in whenever he felt like it. But with that storm, Inkbrand couldn't be sure if the buck had even been able to make it here. If he didn't hear from August in a few days, he would probably send a telegram to Canterlot. For now though, Inkbrand continued to laze about on the couch, and even went out of his way to offer a few half-hearted drops of beer to the somewhat wilted plant on the side table. Housekeeping at its finest.
  2. There's a mysterious little bar in Stalliongrad that always seems to be just two left turns from anywhere, no matter where one might be in the great, big city. Snow is always falling lightly on the sidewalk immediately in front of the bar, even if it's sunny out, and the pull towards the bar that many feel doesn't ever seem to start until the bar opens at five in the afternoon, every day. The sign, marked as the Iron Saddle by the emblem of a saddle on an anvil (as though it were being forged), swings idly in the breeze, even on a day with no wind. The door is green. Everypony who walks into the bar is enveloped by a warm fuzzy feeling. Most attribute it to the fire roaring in the open hearth in the center of the room, though a few recognize it as something a little more magical than that. Nigh always lounging by the fire is a large, dark-furred, shaggy dog, an ovcharka named Vityas, and then there's the other permanent fixture of the bar: Fable la Fey. The light shines on her behind the bartop itself in such a way that she looks almost angelic. Her velvety purple coat sometimes shimmers with a hint of lavender, and her mane the color of stormclouds will show silver sometimes. She is, perhaps, the most mysterious thing about the bar, with her thick Fet Loch accent and her smooth voice. She always seems to know what everypony wants, even before they know, even if they're new. On this day it was five in the afternoon, and the bar had just opened. Fable la Fey was, of course, behind the bar, wiping away the last of a cleaning solution as she awaited the arrival of her first guest.
  3. The streets of Stalliongrad were covered in fresh snow (when were they not?), though that didn’t stop the hustle and bustle of the city. Ponies and griffins and zebras alike moved without a care through the metropolis, going about their business, finishing their day’s work so they could return home to rest and relax. They barely even glanced at the little bar, nestled in between two big buildings. The sign hanging from the side of the building (the same sign you see on all taverns and pubs, it seems) read “The Iron Saddle,” and below the lettering was the depiction of a saddle resting atop an anvil. Trudging up the street came a bundled up earth pony mare, her saddlebags laden with supplies. Beside her trotted a fluffy dog, nearly twice her size, pulling a cart nearly overflowing with more supplies. They came to a stop by the door of the bar, the mare stamping her hooves to keep warm as she fumbled with the key until, finally, the door was unlocked and the mare and her dog were inside. The building, made almost entirely of stone, was nearly as cold inside as it was out, and the mare wasted no time (after setting her saddlebags down carefully of course) in rushing to the fire pit to build the fire back up. Once the flames were roaring yet again, she set to work untangling the dog from his cart. “Vityas,” she said, the Stallian name sounding odd in her Fet Loch accent. “Good boy. Go rest by the fire.” With the fluffy monstrosity of a dog settled on the hearth, the mare busied herself with putting away the bar’s supplies except for a box of decorations. The Hearth’s Warming Eve spirit had bitten her as it did every year, and as long as she was allowed to, she would decorate not only her flat, but her place of work. Finally, Enigma, or Fable la Fey as it were, drew the curtains and flipped the sign in the window to read “Open” to the outside world. She started a phonograph playing some jazzier holiday tunes (in lieu of the band, which had the night off), and set about putting up decorations. Vityas snored by the fire pit.
  4. It was, all in all, a fairly cool August afternoon in Stalliongrad - not that this meant much, it was still warm enough for clothes to be entirely optional, depending on one's trade and social standing. A bit of a quiet day, though, but such was reasonably normal for a Thursday afternoon this time of the year. After all, one tended to get armor in the spring or the fall, and leave the adventuring for the warmth of summer or the chill of winter. There were a number of trades-mares and stallions open for business - one business in particular, though, stood out. A smithy, a somewhat small one, in the merchant district - a bit out of place, but it had done well enough there, for the time being. From the outside, it seemed sturdier than most of the shops, a fairly stocky-looking stone wood and metal affair, centred around a thick stone chimney. A bit out of place, perhaps, as most of the forges were in the somewhat distant Kuznitza district, but nevertheless there. Outside, a small and empty cart waited next to the doorway, nearly hiding the sign that proudly announced, in both Stallian and Equestrian, 'Metalhoof Smithy - Made-to-order and custom armour, jewelry and more available here'. A fairly reputable establishment, if anypony thought to check, though it was in the hooves of a relatively new owner, passed from father to son upon the former's retirement. But, for all of its outer appearances, the interior of the smithy held an altogether different atmosphere... "Stolen? AGAIN!?" A heavy sigh, and a deep breath. "This is being, what, second shipment where you are bringing no silver, no gold, no gems, and only half of iron or steel I have ordered! What am I supposed to be forging with this?" The budding blacksmith shook his head, pacing slowly about behind the counter, his prosthetic metal hoof clanking with every fourth step he took. "I ran out of precious metals before start of last week, was telling customers I would to be starting on their orders as soon as I had shipment. But, nyet, at this rate going to have to melt down money for precious metals!" Indeed, things were not all well at the Metalhoof smithy, and given by the fact that the deep, somewhat raspy voice of the blacksmith working there, it was starting to get on somepony's nerves. It had indeed been some time since precious metals had been in stock at the smithy, and it was starting to have serious impacts on Hammerhoof's ability to make anything that required the special bit of shine that silver and gold offered. Robberies weren't really the fault of the delivery-pony, he'd just been taking the routes into Stalliongrad that were available, and it so happened that a pack of Diamond Dogs decided to mug him for everything they felt like carrying. The first time, he'd let it slide, simply complaining about the loss at the quick-footed, dark-green pony who'd been mugged - after all, it made sense that the delivery-pony would learn from the mistake and change habits accordingly. Second time, though... this was a problem. He advertised armour, utensils, weapons, tools and simple jewelry for sale in his shop, and ye he lacked the materials to fill the most expensive orders, which meant that his most profitable work was all on hold. The brown, somewhat sooty blacksmith simply sighed. He knew the shipment was important, he knew the delivery-pony knew the shipment was important. Getting overly cross wouldn't solve anything, so he lowered his voice, nodding slowly. "I can't even use these gems yet. Is not often somepony wants gems set in iron, copper or steel. I will take them, da, and you will still be receiving some pay, but... I am not sure what to be doing. A third time of this, and you will be costing me enough to put me back in apprenticeship. I do not want for this. Am already going to have to dig into own savings to keep from being broke..." For all that this was causing him difficulty, Hammerhoof didn't really feel like foregoing the payment of somepony else over conditions that were likely out of their control. After all, the delivery-pony had to eat and sleep somewhere - the blacksmith wasn't going to scrooge him out of that. The fact of the matter was simple – somewhere, there were a pack of diamond-dogs that were responsible for a rather harrowing predicament. He had a lot of missing materials to try and work around, a reputation teetering between success and a lack thereof, and he wasn't entirely sure of how to solve this issue. Yes, it was a theft, but through official channels, solving his issue might not come soon enough for him to stay in business. What he needed was a plan, and volunteers. That, or for the majority of his customers to suddenly be overwhelmingly happy with steel and iron in place of silver and gold for their jewelry – no, that was a silly and entirely improbable thing to hope for. So, with the delivery-pony half-paid and on his way out the door, the blacksmith began to ponder. He'd put up a few notices of his need for help on the larger advertisement boards, more of a desparate hope that he might recover his first lost shipment. "Blacksmith in need of expert treasure-recovery, adventurers, or trackers re : stolen shipments. See Metalhoof Smithy", written in slightly clumsy Stallian and Equestrian. It was all well and good to use the native tongue, but this was a big city, with enough trade and travel through it that being bilingual was nearly a must. But now, more than ever, the hope that somepony might come to his aid felt like a rather despnate wish, whimsical and as uncertain as a shooting star. Peraps this was how the gambler felt when buying his last lottery ticket? What a depressing situation. Though he held hope for perhaps somepony to come by looking to aid him, he started trying to figure out best to hold out financially. Maybe, just maybe, he could work through this regardless. Only time would tell.
  5. Things don't always go as planned. The smallest things can sometimes destroy the most meticulous planning. I could turn out, as an example, that your latest discovery decides that the life of a supermodel is not the right thing for her, no matter how much you insist, you can't force someone to live the dream of so many mares and stallions. Photo Finish had barely noticed how her mind had wandered up until now, as she snapped out of it with a slightly annoyed sigh. She looked around in her compartment. It was first class, of course, but even though, she didn't really enjoy train rides. And this one was going to be unusual for a couple of reasons, some of them she wasn't even aware of right now. It all started yesterday, back in Ponyville. The blue mare of fashion had received a telegraph of the most urgent kind, summoning her back to Couture headquarters immediately. Apparently there had been a new designer entering the Canterlot fashion scene and those new designs, they were said to be absolutely dazzling. 'Huh' she thought to herself, adjusting her iconic glasses 'I, Photo Finish, vill be ze judge of zat..' Of course, time was of the essence now. It was important for a prestigious fashion magazine like Couture to be at the pulse of the local fashion scenes, so the sooner they could write a feature about a promising, new designer, the better. Photo Finish knew she wouldn't be able to wait for the train that had been booked for her and her entourage. So she did the only right thing: booking a last minute overnight train ticket to Canterlot. Just her, and light baggage (only two cameras and a hoof full of different lenses). Fortunately, she had the compartment to herself. She didn't really intend to talk much during this trip. Or so she had thought. Just as the light blue mare had been able to fall asleep, rumble went through the train, not only roughly waking her up, but almost throwing her out of her seat. As she tried to comprehend the situation in her slightly sleepy head, she thanked Celestia that she had tugged her bags under her seat instead of the luggage racks above the seats. Those lenses were very fragile, not to mention expensive. And she knew from experience that she should never part with her cameras. You never knew when inspiration would strike. Photo Finish waited for a few minutes in complete silence. This train hadn't been very full, she noticed while boarding. She wasn't even sure if there had been any other ponies in the first class. Being on a tight schedule, she would likely be too late for her meeting, should this disruption take too long. She had to do something. The famous earth pony mare threw open the door, stepping out of her compartment dramatically. She struck a pose. "Vat is going on?" She asked loudly to noone in particular "I, Photo Finish, demand to know vhy ze train stopped moving!!"
  6. Rose felt so very happy for the praise that Caramel, Bramble, and now a third pony were giving to her roses. She outright blushed as Caramel named her roses amazing, turning her head away so she wouldn't show the sudden redness on her cheeks. She gave a brief smile to Caramel and Bramble before turning her attention to Arctic. "My, my, hello there! How nice to meet you! My name is Rose, but my friends often call me Roseluck, and I like to think that everyone is a friend I haven't met yet! What might your name be?" She gave another smile. She glanced around, making sure the ponies around her were treating her roses nicely, but everything seemed fine. At least, it was till Bramble fell on the ground! She reached up to touch his face with her hoof, a worried expression on her face. "Are you all right? You didn't hurt yourself, did you? Oh, I hope not!" Rose hated it when ponies got hurt - and for him to fall on her property! how terrible!
  7. The grey stallion flipped through his notes, smiling back at his boss. "I'm glad you took me as an assistant for this project. There's so much I can learn from this." As they trotted to the entrance, he continued: "Let's see, the piping should have already arrived, and should have been stored on the other side of the building. I wasn't there when they arrived, but I'm sure..." He beamed, looking up from his book: "...maybe we should look that everything is in place before the workers arrive."
  8. Applejack puffed as she scooped apples from off the ground to the closest harvesting pale. "Babysit? Nao!? When there's a swarm of hungray caterpillars headin' this way. I gotta get all these apples picked before they get swarmed on!" Applejack's regrets to the Cake's couldn't really be heard well. But her intention was not to sound selfish. After all, there wasn't much more important to her than the well-being of the apple orchard. Except family. But Applejack was sure that somepony would help them, and since Applejack was a dependable family oriented pony, she was pretty sure she was one of the first the Cake's asked. As the Cake's left saddened by Applejack's regrets, the orange mare noticed a bouncing Pinkie following them. I sure hope if they ask Pinkie she knows what she's doing. Applejack, rushed a pair of harvesting saddlebaskets full of apples to the barn door. She kicked open the door and threw the apples into the barn and shut the door. Winded, Applejack knew that as long as the apples were in the barn, there was no way the caterpillars could get to them. The barn was well made and designed to keep critters of all sizes out. However, Applejack also knew that in order to get all of the apples that were currently on the tree into the barn, she and her brother would have to work extra fast and hard all day and since she hadn't seen Big Mac yet, she was getting a little annoyed with his absense. "Big Macintosh!? Where in tarnation are you at!? We need to get these apples off these trees pronto!" Applejack stamped her hoof as she shouted at Big Macintosh's window.
