1. After seeing the amount of players around that are interested in roleplaying as Equestrian military personnel, it's only fitting that we have a master topic within the cast & lore section itself to serve as a guide for those who want to know what other players are out there, what topics exist for your character to be involved in, and to look at reference material for other guards to draw inspiration from and/or learn how to improve your character! -This is an OOC thread where players can find any information they may need regarding the Royal Equestrian Guard (REG), it's members, subgroups, operations, and special units, as well as a place to discuss upcoming/potential roleplays or ideas. -Please do NOT promote ideas for new lore to the Army, or modifications to existing lore, as that is not what this section of the forum is for. The hope is that with time, we can build up a comprehensive list of all the material a new or inexperienced player could ask for in order to fill a guard's role more comfortably. -For guard characters to be added to this list, they must be apped and approved in accordance with Canterlot's character creation standards, IE, the application must be stamped! -In the case of cast characters, if a certain cast character with military affiliation has multiple players (due to the new system), all applications will be posted in the following format: Example: Rank Soandso (App 1) (App 2) (App 3) IF YOU HAVE A CHARACTER OR AN RP TOPIC INVOLVING GUARDPONIES, PM ME AND I'LL BE SURE TO ADD IT! For the general lore topic regarding the Royal Equestrian Guard, click here! (This includes the Army, Navy, and Royal Guard [for now].) For the general lore topic regarding the Wonderbolts, click here! 2. The stallion had paced his hooves up and down the halls of his manor for hours. Firestorm was impatient, but that was to be expected when the matter at hoof involved his son. When all three ponies were gathered, he spoke all he knew. Flashfire was a former REA commander, having been demoted, he resigned and walked away from the REA. That was something Firestorm could understand from his son. The REA had been his son's entire life work. His whole youth had been invested into it. Building a career that would have been his lasting mark up on the world after he was gone. But with demotion, Flashfire had felt himself a failure and sought seclusion from all Equestria. That too, was expected by Firestorm, the father. However what was not expected was the utter disappearance of Flashfire. It was almost impossible for any pony to vanish into thin air like that. No paper trail, no travel documentation. Not even sightings. All but a few personal belongings had just been delivered to the father's residence. This distressed Firestorm greatly, but he wanted to respect his son's wishes to be left in peace. He had not filed a report until a letter arrived. The letter was from Flashfire. It was a simple note. "Need reinforcements. Small detachment to the following location." The note contained coordinates of the location, but the maps of the desert area showed no towns there. Firestorm assumed Flashfire had run into hostile forces of unknown kind and become trapped. The letter had been delivered through magical means, which meant Flashfire did not have the ability to use his magic to transport himself away. Firestorm, a retired REA member himself had moved before the royal courts for help, as he had no power in the military any more. Now with the three ponies before him, he had laid out a map for them. Showing the exact location. No town or settlement located in that part of the frontier. Just empty desert and unexplored canyons. Even his friends in the REA had no idea what was there. The desert was hostile at the best of times. But that area was very hot and mostly loose sand and rock. no soil to grow crops in that was known of. After paying for supplies and arranging for the group to have additionally funding, Firestorm had only asked them one thing, to ensure their son's safety. He knew nothing of if they had any other orders from the REA for retrieval. He gave them a photo of Flashfire. The proud REA commander in full armor standing beside Firestorm. Flashfire's face was stern, like the look was permanently stuck on his lips. The photo was dated to a year prior, the most recent of all pictures of the commander in question. Firestorm's parting words as they left ere simple. "Please save my son." As the Train arrived in Appaloosa, there was a cart of supplies waiting for them guarded by two armored ponies. It was the covered kind of cart, providing it's own shelter for the users. It was stocked inside with what appeared to be large barrels of water and an ample supply of food as well as a few other basics. The guards were standing by the cart, reading what appeared to be the newspaper. The sign on the side of the cart had the primary REA symbol, as well as a notice with their names tacked to it.
3. ((OOC: http://www.canterlot.com/forums/topic/21745-the-changing-of-guards-calling-all-royal-equestrian-guards/)) THE POETRY OF THE SUMMIT~By LYIPHEORYIA STERTLINGS* The day was bright and early, Celestia's beloved sun an early bird in the quiet sky. It was all but silent, save for a few ponies' cry. For today was the day, that all might change; that perhaps after today, all enemies would be held at bay. To protect Equestria, Luna and Celestia. To aid in it's citizens and ranks, to keep in peace from every sea, to each river bank, This was the duty that lay ahead, the job forever and eternally -of the Royal Guards. By duty and by service, I summon thee here today. To discuss and to debate, each enemy hailed away. To mingle with Changeling minds; to delve into Chaos' soul. To fight against Tirek, To battle against each and every villain, that has dared to seek his eyes upon Equestrian. Today is the day, that all victories shall lie nigh, For today is the day, that the Royal Guard shall pay, its homage-to their liege Equestria. *As events unfold themselves in the summit, more verses shall be added.
4. The Wonderbolts - Heroes of the Sky In Equestria, few groups are more looked up to than the Wonderbolts. As the premiere aerial demonstration team of the land, ponies naturally look upwards to see their dazzling maneuvers. But aside from that literal sense, the Wonderbolts represent some of the most cherished qualities that pegasi can have. All who take up the blue and yellow flightsuits, and the winged lightning bolt insignia of the Wonderbolts, earn that privilege through demonstrating steadfast integrity, the will to go the extra mile, and the ability to work together with, and trust completely in, their teammates. The origins of the Wonderbolts go back to about a millennium, to the first-year anniversary of the formation of what’s now the Royal Equestrian Guard. To celebrate this event, General Firefly was tasked with organizing an elite unit of fliers who could dazzle crowds with awe-inspiring aerobatics. According to stories, that first public performance, where magical lightning bolts rained down from the superbly energetic fliers, inspired so much wonder in the onlookers that henceforth, the royal aerial demonstration would forever be known as the Wonderbolts. Entrance into the Wonderbolts is no easy feat. Typically, members of the squadron are chosen from among the best fliers in all branches of the Royal Equestrian Guard. However, civilian pegasi also have an opportunity to prove themselves by enrolling in the Wonderbolts Academy, a mountaintop school of hard knocks specifically designed to weed out all who can’t live up to the values of the elite airborne unit. Those who make it through the initial training and the battery of grueling written tests are expected to partake in a grueling schedule of airshows all across Equestria, and even beyond. Training never ends for this team; the Wonderbolts practice constantly to maintain peak condition and coordination at all times. Fliers who don’t train are a danger to the entire team; a single slip-up or mistimed move could potentially result in ugly crashes and more. But despite the hard work and the risk, many pegasi dream of joining the Wonderbolts one day. Those few who take up to the heavens to perform Bomb Bursts, Diamond 360s, and Icaranian Sun Salutations are regarded as idols by young and old alike. ~REG Recruitment Brochure
5. Royal Equestrian Guard - In Service of All Equestria Once upon a time, Equestria didn’t require a unified defense force. Princesses Celestia and Luna, empowered by the Elements of harmony, shared the responsibility of keeping their kingdom safe from malevolent forces. Those few ponies who took up arms as a profession did so only in defense of their homes, and were not organized under any central authority. After Luna’s banishment to the Moon however, Celestia found that she lacked the ability to defend her subjects alone. Therefore, she encouraged the local militias to unite as one force, utilizing the combined strengths of earth ponies, unicorns, and pegasi to fill the void left by Luna’s absence. Through a thousand years of changes, this defense force is now known to all as the Royal Equestrian Guard: champions of Equestrian pride, sovereignty, and magnanimity. All who sign up to join the Royal Equestrian Guard (REG), as enlisted recruits or officer cadets, must first undergo rigorous training. Under the nurturing supervision of noisy drill instructors, new prospects learn about pushing their bodies, solving problems in high-stress situations, and what specific jobs within the Guard fit their natural talents. More vitally, recruits and cadets alike are expected to grasp the importance of teamwork, understand the value of peacekeeping over hostility, and cultivate strong bonds of camaraderie with fellow soldiers and commanders. Anyone who can put aside their selfish dreams of glory for the welfare of their unit, and Equestria, will find a long rewarding career in the REG. Characteristic of harmonious ponykind, the Royal Equestrian Guard frowns upon the use of violence to maintain peace. As a mainly pacifist organization, it lacks the capacity to wage war on other realms beyond Equestria. Instead, the Guard’s primary duties involve law enforcement, investigation, logistical support, and diplomatic escort. An extension of their role as guardians is to keep wild beasts such as timberwolves and hydras away from settled areas. When humanitarian assistance is required, the REG is often the first to respond, as their strong logistics infrastructure and large horsepower pool can be ready to bring aid at a moment’s notice. For a millennium, harmony has thrived in Equestria thanks to the tireless efforts of the entire Royal Guard. However in recent years, these brave ponies with their impeccable service record have faced some of their most challenging threats yet. Without question, the REG will have to adapt in order to remain an effective force for good. But even when evolving, the Guard remains committed towards never giving into the temptation of responding to war with war, and to spread peace instead of destruction. ------ Here is a list of the main branches of the Royal Equestrian Guard: Royal Equestrian Army - Famous for their characteristic historically-inspired armor, the Army is the most visible branch of the REG. Exceptional members of the army are assigned to the Princesses’ Honor Guard, who have the responsibility of safeguarding Princess Celestia in Canterlot and on diplomatic visits. The Imperial Guard of the Crystal Empire, the protectors of the Crystal Princess, have recently been integrated with the Honor Guard proper as well. Perhaps the most mysterious army offshoot is the Lunar Guard, the personal bodyguards of Princess Luna. Unlike the rest of the Army, Luna’s guards wear special dark-colored armor and are seemingly comprised exclusively of areion, colloquially known as “bat ponies”. However from time to time, normal ponies are also inducted into the Lunar Guard. Royal Equestrian Navy - Sailing on majestic steamers, the Navy keeps the seas of Equestria safe to travel on. Mainly, they rescue sailors and other ponies caught in shipwrecks or other maritime accidents. Once in a while though, the Navy is called upon to force underwater monsters back to the depths of the deep ocean, or to deal with disruptive pirates. ~REG Recruitment Brochure
6. Squinting as the afternoon sun flashed off her golden armour, Sugar Star made a blind grasp for the buckles of her torso piece and tightened it a little. Normally the winged mare’s appearance was prim and proper to complete an image of the austere soldier before she dared to step outside of the REA barracks – she even felt a pinch of shame in her belly at her little display. But today wasn’t exactly a typical day for Specialist Sugar Star. Assuming a stance of rigidity, the pegasus folded her wings neatly against her sides and started up a brisk trot over the cobblestones, away from the clamour and chaos that had consumed the home base of the Royal Equestrian Army in Canterlot. That morning had started off as any other: she and a fellow pegasus named Flicker Wing had been assigned the early patrol, which meantwaking up at the crack of dawn to circle above Canterlot and walk through its streets in order keep an eye on things and maintain the peace if need be. As they were making their way through the last leg of their ground routes, the two ponies had come across a traveling earth pony merchant peddling his wares. The stallion had a dusty little collection of potions he had vague knowledge of, most likely plucked out of some abandoned cache of magical goods, and as one would expect of her, Flicker Wing (the oddly-obsessed-with-anything-arcane pegasus) recognized each potion just by looking at the colour and density. A grey, viscous potion immediately caught the mare’s eye: it was a troublesome mixture, brewed by a unicorn potion master with quite the troublesome reputation himself. Though not malicious in its nature, in the wrong hooves the potion could cause quite a disturbance! So Flicker plucked the potion from the merchant (who was sincere when he admitted he had no idea the concoction was anything more than a “mischief brew”) and confiscated it. The trouble came about when they returned to the base. Normally, a potion like Brewhoof’s Cackler’s Concoction would be stored someplace safe and out of reach. Unfortunately, before Flicker and Sugar could reach a vault, the potion had been dropped and began to wreak havoc. Inanimate objects came to life and began to zip around at whatever whims the bothersome brew had given them! It was only mildly irritating at first, but soon enough an ugly miasma with a musty odour began to spread from the spill and with it went the magic. Irritation was quickly becoming dangerous as the stinky miasma drew closer and closer to the armoury. Sugar Star was lucky enough to make it away from the jinx without a hitch, but Flicker’s helmet had come to life, zipped about, and knocked her on the head. She conked out immediately! Long story short, after Sugar Star had gotten her friend to safety and reported the incident she was sent immediately to look for Special Agent Fletcher over at REIN. Unicorn magic had no effect on the potion’s miasma jinx, so she was assigned the task of seeking out the potion master who had crafted the pesky brew: Iosef Brewhoof. He was a wanted pony, anyhow, so it would be hitting two birds with one stone! But Sugar Star didn’t have a talent for finding ponies on the run, which is why she was sent to find Special Agent Fletcher. The winged mare withheld a sigh as she passed through the doors of REIN headquarters, had a brief exchange with the first pony she came across (a taciturn older unicorn with her iron-grey mane pulled into a tight bun), and was led through a space that was as comfortable as it was imposing. It was the pristine quality of the stone pillars that reflected the pure, intimidating force of the law and seemed to loom over the pegasus. But the worn hardwood floors – the feel of it, the smell of the wood mingling with the aroma of fresh-brewed coffee – it just felt…cozy. Not to mention Sugar Star liked the soft sound her petite hooves made as they fell upon those floors! Before she knew it, her arrival had been announced and the crotchety unicorn had left her to step forward and introduce hers- Oh. Oh dear. Perhaps the day wasn’t a total loss after all. All of a sudden her annoyance, frustration, and worries were stomped on by a much more demanding emotion: giddiness! Special Agent Fletcher looked exactly like the lead stallion in one of her favourite, sugary-sweet romance comics. Well, despite a slight difference in hue (Fletcher being blue, and the character Midnight Mystery being more of an indigo), they were identical. The Specialist was no longer stressed out about her mission. In fact, she was quite ready for it to get underway, and quickly. It was the perfect setup! An unfortunate circumstance pushed together the adorable-but-capable-and-also-endearingly-quirky female lead and the mysterious, brooding stallion. At first, they wouldn’t get along, but as their shared struggles brought them together they would grow fond of one another, until a terrible misunderstanding caused them to hate each other briefly before they realized their mistakes at the last moment, with one of them saving the other and confessing their true, pure hearts. It would end with them gazing into each other’s eyes as sparkling rose petals whirled about them. It would be perfect. And all of that passed through the REA Specialist’s mind in the mere blink of her pink eyes. Outwardly, the only notable change in her demeanour had been for a spark to shine in her previously glum eyes. “Special Agent Fletcher,” she stated, pulling a tight salute in greeting, “My name is Sugar Star - I’m a Specialist in the Royal Equestrian Army and I was sent here because we need your help. A confiscated potion was spilled before it could be stored away, and it released a miasma that animates random objects and gives them minds of their own. Mischievous minds at that. It’s slowly nearing the armoury, and I’m sure I don’t have to explain what that means. So far the jinx and the objects it’s brought to life are all contained, but…we need to stop this, and soon. Unicorn magic doesn’t work: we need to find the stallion who brewed the potion. That’s where you come in. We need your help to locate Iosef Brewhoof, and we only have three days to do it.”
7. When I wrote the first draft of the Army document, I didn’t realize it would garner so much attention nor have such far-reaching consequences for the rest of the site. I juggled a lot of ideas for the REA, including Soviet-era orders of battle, Roman legions, and finally the modern United States Army circa 2010. Since the REA was originally built for the Heart of Equestria RP setting, it had a lot more offensive capability and was very capable of handling warfighting. It was the fantasy army that everyone wanted it to be. A paradigm shift occurred about a year and a half ago with the acquisition of the site by Manestream and Autumn. The creative vision for the RP was tightened up considerably and directed to the slice of life aspect of FiM. While it limited the use and scope of the REA, I believe it was overall a healthy decision for the board. There were still a few issues with the extant REA, however. Despite the fact that it was never formally ratified as board lore, many people used the draft document as the basis for creating their characters. The current draft is slightly bloated and places too much emphasis on the specific military units and their capabilities. Eventually, I want players to be able to create their own units for their guardsponies to be proud of. The design document is meant to be a guide rather than a hard checklist. In addition to the less-than-perfect design document, the general attitude of players regarding soldier characters seems to be based on Hollywood action films. The films focus on the violent part of being a soldier, a part which rarely ever comes into play in real life-- even less so in the FiM universe. These applications tend to focus on a soldier’s abilities to harm others and those alone. Most of the guardspony characters came out all right, but I noticed several applications that made their REA ponies clearly combat oriented (I myself am guilty of this with my earlier characters). Their backstories often included experience in combat of some sort though there has been no war in over 1000 years in board canon. While the ability to cause harm is necessary in the act of making war, it is very different for a Canterlot guard or an REA garrison responding to a petty crime or monster attack. Equestria on the whole is not a violent place. The willingness to protect innocents is laudable, but the willingness to harm others indiscriminately is not a normal attitude to have in either human or pony universes. Ponies as a whole are seen as a peaceful species who would not escalate to violence to solve problems. To have assassin or psychopathic murderer ponies exist in Mane RP is not only excessive but antithetical to what the FiM (and by extension WOE) stands for. Likewise, having armed ponies who brandish their weapon with little or no provocation is against the general Equestrian mindset. This is not to say that Equestrian soldiers (or even civilian sheepdogs) should not be trained in the use of their arms and armor. It is the duty of the Royal Equestrian Army to prevent harm from coming to those they are entrusted to protect. It therefore makes perfect sense for them to wield weapons, wear armor, and practice the art of war with their comrades in arms. How then, do we qualify what is okay and what is not okay for a soldier or sheepdog? The first qualifier is appropriateness. It must be reiterated that Equestria is not a violent place. While there may be dangerous things in the wild and creatures that could cause grievous harm to those caught unprepared, violent crimes such as assault or homicide (or the threatening thereof) are unheard of and wholly inappropriate for WOE. When creating characters for the Mane RP it is important to consider the universe in which a character is being created for. This is Equestria, land of magical, talking, pastel-coloured ponies, not a blasted post-apocalyptic wasteland or a world engulfed in the flames of war. Ponies simply do not hold murderous attitudes against each other or even other species. The second qualifier is character. A character should not be defined by their weapon or the more violent parts of their profession. As consumers of entertainment media, we tend to have a fixation with the arms and armor of those with the soldier profession, so much so, that sometimes we forget that there is a person (or in this case pony) behind the hardware. That pony has friends and family, doubts and fears, hopes and dreams. Those personality traits should be at the forefront of the character, not their skill at arms or their capacity for slaughter. The final qualifier is mindset. The mindset of the soldier and the sheepdog is that of readiness; of being ready to put themselves in harm’s way to protect the innocent. Protecting the innocent may be as simple as scaring off a bully or as complex as disrupting a crime in progress. It may be as mundane as giving a smile of confidence to a worried foal or as heart-wrenching as making the ultimate sacrifice so that others may live. In addition, soldiers are not trained in a vacuum. While each individual is responsible for learning their arms and armor, they are trained to take on the enemy as members of a team. There are few things that can forge stronger relationships-- that feeling of espirt de corps-- than the crucible of military training. I would expect nothing less from Equestria’s finest. Friendship is inherently sacrificial. You give your time and efforts and open yourself to hurt in order to make your friends happy and in return be made happy by them. The vigilante, assassin, and violent soldier archetypes are selfish by nature; they appoint themselves sole executors of the law and need no one else to fulfill themselves. This goes against the core themes in FiM: the focus on morality, sticking with your friends, giving those who are different a chance, and the emphasis on nonviolent solutions to complex problems. A soldier or sheepdog knows his or her tools and respects the great power he or she wields. Weapons are only meant to be used in the most dire of circumstances and to be frank, most WOE scenarios do not mandate their use or even their presence. I think the opening paragraph of the REA’s overview expresses this best: The REA represents the best of Equestria, simultaneously championing Equestrian pride, sovereignty, and magnanimity. The protectors of Equestria are exemplars; they protect Equestria not by slaying her enemies, but by being shining examples of loyalty, honor, teamwork, and the willingness to sacrifice for the well-being of others. That is what being in the REA is about.

Acclaim

From the album: Pony Stuffs

"Acclaim excels at thinking on her feet, leveraging all of her experiences, senses, and knowledge of her allies and opponents to defeat any problem that is thrown her way. Her tactics are often unconventional and unorthodox, but she thoroughly enjoys successes that hinge on thinking out of the box and turning weakness into strength."

9. WHUMP. WHUMP. WHUMP. The sound of cloth-wrapped hooves on canvas-wrapped sand was a familiar one to Corporal Stone Bones. The smell of old canvas, the bitter taste of adrenaline on his tongue, the tremors of footwork on gym padding and the shock of hooves on the heavy bag swirled around him in a symphony of controlled violence. The barn back home. A dingy arena in Hoofington. An army gym. It made no difference so long as it had enough space so that Bones didn’t need to hold back when he trained. Of these, though, Bones found himself most at home in the REA barracks. The gym wasn’t terribly large, but it was well equipped and gave him plenty of quality time alone when he needed to train. WHUMP. WHUMP. WHUMP. But today was different. Today, Stone Bones had a partner, a certain pegasus who had apparently gotten herself wrangled into an intramural boxing match, something she admitted she was ill-prepared for. She was in need of a coach, somepony to show her the ropes so it didn’t go from a fight to a farce. It showed. Stone Bones tightened his hold on the heavy bag as the white pegasus slammed into it again. The big warhorse grimaced, not from the impact, but the pitifully poor form he was observing. His charge was a feisty one to be sure, but at this rate she was more likely to hurt herself than land a solid hit. “Stop focusin’ on hittin’ hard an’ focus on hittin’ straight!” Bones said, keeping himself braced against the bag. “Ye have ta’ keep yer heed in the game. Now back up an’ try it again!”
10. To me, there are two things that should distinguish any given REA battalion. Helmet Crest pattern, and their Shoulder Sleeve Insignia. Like this, (US 101st Airborne Division) Now normally this proposal wouldn't be necessary, because there are no visual references in the REA lore. That's where I come in. I'm willing to custom-made a full sleeve insignia for any Royal Equestrian Army Battalions, you might have in mind. And an additional helmet crest pattern. Just tell me your design instructions below, and i'll PM it to you in about a week tops. Just a few things. 1. Please do not request any coat of arms, I do not have the time, nor the skill to make them. 2. This request thread is meant only for mods, helpstaff, or any staff members who could add to the Equestrian lore, without the need for a proposal. 3. I will only be doing Airborne battalions right, for I do not have the available tabs (titles) to do any Cataphract, Magus, or Pathfinder battalions. (I will soon though). EDIT* I can still do other battalion types, but you won't get the correct tabs until later on. 4. Please keep the comments to requests only, even though I cannot control what you post below, it would make my work alot easier. 5. I am also unable to do any pony-skull designs. I could do human, but I doubt it would fit into the lore. That's it for now, down below are examples of my work. I really hope to see your requests soon!
11. “Move outta the way!” - a shout forced Ardent to look behind. It was yet another Royal patrol. He trotted aside obediently, observing them as they passed near him. He picked out their suspicious stares. Stallion wasn't surprised with this, as he knew he's standing out by a fair amount. He was wearing his ceremonial armor, covered in various decorative markings, with a dazzling sapphire implemented in the very front of it. His helmet also differed, as it covered most part of his face, unlike typical REA helmets. Moreover, as his mission was also representative, the tradition ordered him to bring his sword, which was crafted exclusively for his needs. Pegasus kept it tied on his back, just above the bags. As soon as the patrol passed by, Will continued his walk towards one of Canterlot REA barracks. The state of emergency has been declared in the city. It was now swarming with guards, determined to protect it to their last breaths. Pegasus couldn't help to notice that the grass all around him was simply trampled. “Seems that even nature couldn't stop the royal equestrian forces...” - he joked in his mind, trying to remain focused at his target. Ardent didn't know why he was the one chosen to attend the crisis meeting called in the city of Canterlot. It seemed that everypony with higher ranks were suddenly busy with things which weren't destined to his ears. But it lied not in his nature to question the orders, especially if they came from the high command itself. The task he was assigned seemed simple. Cooperate with REA in order to, eventually, eliminate any potential threats to the kingdom. He was supposed to keep in touch with rest of the brotherhood on daily basis. The only problem here was that... REA and Destriers didn't get along very well... He approached the building finally. The structure itself had only two floors and was purely white. He could see the castle of Canterlot in the far distance. Pegasus wondered how does it look inside as the end of his journey drew near. All of a sudden, a guard crossed his path. “Nopony is allowed into that building, citizen.” - Ardent frowned upon hearing a 'citizen' word directed at him. He didn't answer, instead he pulled out a letter. Its seal was already broken, as he had to show it upon entering Canterlot in the first place. The guard started reading: “~~~~ Anypony reading these words, know this, that the bearer of this letter is an ambassador of holy Destrier brotherhood. Amongst many, he has been chosen to be an emissary of justice. None shall stand in his path, as he must safely reach the city of Canterlot. Those, who should oppose his will until he reaches his destination, shall suffer severe consequences by the hooves of the chapter. Praised be Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. ~~~~” The letter finished with two, mysteriously looking seals imprinted in red wax. As guard finished, he threw the letter back at Ardent with disrespectful expression. “Nopony is allowed into the building.” - he repeated himself, throwing Will into momentary confusion. The words stabbed his mind like an imaginary dagger. “You dare to oppose the will of the chapter, and, ultimately, Princess herself?” - Ardent spoke calmly, picking his words carefully, hiding a threat in his voice. The letter didn't explain anything, naturally, but Destrier chapter, even though considered unfriendly, was known to REA in the end. “The letter speaks of reaching Canterlot. Congratulations, you've reached it. I feel free to 'stand in your path' now.” - Ardent stood staggered after those words. He had no idea how to convince a simple guard to his words. Duty is duty, one must obey orders and take things literally. He hoped that there's somepony inside who could hear that little conversation in front of the doors. Or, perhaps, not everypony arrived yet. After all, Ardent's attendance was announced and everypony at the meeting knew who they're going to interact with...
12. Novaya No matter how dark the night or how cold the winter, there is always hope. I want to be that hope to anypony who makes their home here. Name: Command Sergeant Major Novaya Sex: Female Age: Mare in her prime Species: Unicorn Coat Color: Pink (#E10586) Mane/Tail Color & Style: Purple (#521AD1) and Teal (#0F89CA) in alternating streaks. Mane is mid-length, tied back in a bun and tucked under a ushanka when on duty, though she usually lets it run rampant when off duty. Eye Color: Auric (#F1CB17) Distinguishing Marks: Two titanium earrings in her left ear. Removed for duty. Usually carries a small, wooden, bird charm tied to her topcoat or load-bearing gear. Cutie Mark: A silhouette of a blue gentian flower in blue overlaid on an 8-pointed star in purple, representing her toughness and tenacity but also her appreciation for beauty and growth in adverse conditions. Physique: Curvy, but fit. Tough and strong from military training. Origin: Stalliongrad, Chenya District. Occupation: Senior enlisted mare, Command Sergeant Major in Gamma Squadron ISU-143 Roleplay Type: Mane RP Motivation: Keep the skies and the streets clear of pirates and criminal scum. Make a difference in the world. Likes: A job well-done, straightforwardness, Stallianoya, beets, pumpkins, woodcarving, the beauty of the Frontier, the military life Dislikes: Pirates, interrupted leave, excessive bureaucracy, dishonesty or shadiness, bugs, desk work, peppermint, egotism, entitled ponies Character History Novaya is the product of three generations in the military, the only child of a Guard NCO and a Chenya schoolteacher. Her upbringing was multifaceted, often seeing the city streets with her mother but also going into the wilderness with her father when he returned home on leave. From her mother, she learned to understand her charges before making judgments and from her father, she learned to stand strong in the face of adversity-- be it the worst that nature had to throw at her or the darker side of Equestria rearing its ugly head. A young Novaya often talked with her father about cases he had dealt with during their wilderness treks. Novaya was infuriated by the depths that some ponies could sink to, but at the same time heartened by the hopeful endings that her father delivered. Even in the darkest of times, there was hope. Her father’s dedication to ensuring that the ponies under his command and under his jurisdiction had hope left an indelible impression on her that she carries to this day. An uneventful childhood ended with Novaya following the family tradition and joining the Stallian Guard, eventually being assigned to 5th Battalion. With 5th Battalion, Novaya endured both patrol work in the streets of Stalliongrad and airship rotations patrolling the frontier. Her years in the service were merely routine; her dedication and work ethic allowing her to slowly climb the enlisted ranks. Eventually she was promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant, a promotion that came with a letter authorizing her transfer to ISU-143. Going by the local name Molot, ISU-143 has a fierce reputation as the fighting elite of Stalliongrad’s guard forces. Translating roughly to “sledgehammer” in common, the name is highly appropriate for a guard detachment that spends much of its time searching airships, apprehending criminals, and seizing contraband. Their no-nonsense approach to their mission and the dynamic nature of their operations suited Novaya perfectly. She has dedicated her life to the “One-Four-Three,” always holding in her heart the desire to make a difference. Novaya’s shining moment with Molot came during Operation Storm Hammer, an anti-piracy operation centered around taking down the sky pirate known only as Skopa--the Osprey. The operation was meant to both apprehend Skopa and send a clear message to any would-be pirates that Stalliongrad would not be a haven for criminals. The mission was successful; the joint task force successfully defeated Skopa, capturing the pirate crew and mothership. Upon their return to Stalliongrad, Novaya and Fletcher, then the leader of the I Order boarding party, were hailed as heroes. Since Storm Hammer, Novaya has been promoted to Command Sergeant Sergeant Major and is the senior enlisted mare in her ISU squadron. She continues to serve Stalliongrad with the 143 and train incoming VSS recruits at Stabil Krasnyi during garrison rotations. Personality Novaya is first and foremost straightforward. Her bluntness and unwillingness to equivocate makes her an ideal NCO, but virtually excludes her from ever switching to officer track. Still, she has the respect of her command and the confidence of her KOG superiors due to her skill, tenacity, and the firm trust her charges put in her. When she is rotated back to Stabil Krasnyi to train incoming recruits, it is not uncommon to hear “Tetushka Novaya” uttered among the enlisted stallions-- Auntie Novaya. While she is far too attached to her city to be a true survivalist outdoorsmare, Novaya is able to hold her own in a survival situation. The lessons taught to her by her father during her fillyhood were not lost on her. On occasion she still makes treks into Vysokii district, camping on the peak of the Gor Zarya, where she can watch over her city from afar. Novaya treats those under her command as alternately her best friends and her finest students. Off-duty, she is loud, boisterous, and talkative, always enjoying carousing at bars or in the break room. On-duty, she is relaxed but far from lackadaisical, not always adhering to SOP, but always keeping the mission in mind. Novaya is not a micromanager. She trusts her command to accomplish the mission, even if it is not always done by the book. Novaya does not deal well with entitled high-society ponies, finding their “proper” mannerisms, sycophant tendencies, and obtuse focus on things she deems unimportant greatly irritating. After a life of being strong, self-sufficient, independent mare, Novaya feels insulted by the “upper-crust” ladies who make their living pandering to their patrons. By extension, Novaya is also wary of military bureaucrats high up the chain, as she does not trust them to fully understand the situations that the field forces encounter on patrol while they remain cozy in their heated offices. Special Forces (ISU) commanders are excepted, as Novaya sees them as already having proven themselves through service. Despite her reluctance to weave tangled social webs, Novaya has a complex relationship with Captain Fletcher of the Honor Guard. They grew close during their service together during Operation Storm Hammer and have kept contact on and off since Cadenza’s departure. Novaya finds Fletcher’s opacity insufferable at times. Likewise, Fletcher finds Novaya’s forthright manner and bluntness abrasive, especially after his transfer to V Order. Still, it is apparent that each cares deeply for the other, even if they have very convoluted ways of showing it. Novaya carves small wooden sculptures in her spare time, most of them being avian-themed. Spellbook Combat Spells Brightlance. Precise, short-ranged, high-intensity luminous burst of aether that can sunder armor and burn targets. Can be tuned for less-lethal effects such as blinding or stunning. Novaya’s signature spell. Animate Drone. Imbues one of Novaya’s carvings with minor animus, giving it flight and allowing Novaya to see through its “eyes” for a short time. Utility Spells Light. Basic unicorn illumination spell. Telekinesis. Basic unicorn “mage hand” for fine manipulation of objects. First Aid. Basic triage spell taught in Magus training. Can be used to clean wounds, disinfect minor cuts and scratches, and stop bleeding. However, serious injuries such as broken bones and blood loss still need to be treated by a medical expert. Slow fall. Utility spell taught to all unicorns who serve in airborne units. Allows the user to generate a cushion of aether that greatly reduces the chances of a fall from height becoming lethal. Skill Set Wilderness Survival. Having been on patrol with 10th Battalion during their pirate-hunting operations, the chances of being shot down or stranded with a crippled airship are on every service-mare’s mind. Thus, wilderness survival in the harsh and bitter country outside Stalliongrad city limits is a critical skill. Command. While not on officer track by profession, Novaya is friendly and receptive and has a talent for getting her troops to trust her. VBSS. Part of ISU-143’s job is visit, board, search, and seizure operations on airships, which often involve maneuvering, inspecting, and sometimes fighting, in confined spaces and over short distances.
13. Colonel Aristotle They want strength? We’ll give it to them. Strength of arms, strength of character, and strength of resolve! Name: Colonel Aristotle Ironwing, Alpha Squadron, IV Order, Her Majesty’s Honor Guard (Ret.), aka Dio's dad. Sex: Male Age: Older stallion, late 50s or early 60s by human years. Species: Pegasus RP Color: #804000 Pelt Color: Brown pelt, white fetlocks Mane/Tail Color & Style: Salt and pepper mane and forelock, longer, but trimmed and taken care of. Black tail with streaks of grey beginning to appear with age. Wings are also brown, with white pinion feathers. Eye Color: Brown Cutie Mark: Crossed longsword and maul (hammer) in silhouette, in gold. The hammer symbolizes strength of character and body while the sword symbolizes sharpness of tongue and intellect. Physique: While not in prime athletic condition, Aristotle is fit and healthy for his age. Carries himself like he’s still in the Honor Guard. Origin: Born in Cloudsdale. Currently living in Canterlot. Occasional trips to Cloudsdale and Trottingham to visit old Army friends. Occupation: Officially retired. Remains in Canterlot as a negotiator and advisor on Griffon politics. Formerly commander of Alpha Squadron, IV Order, Her Majesty's Honor Guard. Motivation: A strong family and a strong legacy. Making sure his successors don’t screw up the work he did. Maintaining strength of moral character in spite of temptation otherwise. Likes: Swapping stories about his military days, a good debate, Rockwington Scotch, Hoofington Pale Ale, chai, watching Wonderbolt aerobatics performances, thunderstorms, good company, Portobello mushrooms Dislikes: Military-bashing ponies, poor-quality alcohol, bureaucratic red tape, cherries, sky pirates, obstinate parties in negotiation, cowards Character History If there ever was a stallion’s stallion, it would be Aristotle Ironwing. One look at him will tell you exactly which side of the family Diomedes’ size comes from. The big Pegasus is the veteran of years of service in the Royal Equestrian Army as an Honor Guard commander. In his day, Aristotle reported directly to Princess Celestia, serving as her envoy to the Griffon lands. In the early days of Griffon-Pony political relations, the Griffons respected might and charisma over concession and diplomacy, necessitating the use of a military unit to represent Equestria diplomatically. Despite his rough outward appearances, Aristotle is neither a cold-blooded killer nor a brawny jingoist. He is highly intelligent and team-oriented, as well as a family stallion, making him one of the most capable, professional, and motivated commanders the Honor Guard has ever had. Still, time has caught up with Aristotle and he is not as strong or as quick as he used to be. He is currently retired and living in Canterlot on government pension. However, since Aristotle is still an expert negotiator and subject matter expert on Griffon politics, he is regularly called in to advise the current bureaucrats and the princesses. Aristotle is still a proud pegasus. He sometimes forgets that he has limits both in physical strength and authority. He runs and flies every day to keep himself fit, but does not know when to quit at times. He lives alone and refuses to hire help. Aristotle is not a fan of the new breed of Equestrian military bureaucrats, seeing them more as scheming, short-sighted cowards than intelligent strategists. In spite of the "changing of the guard," Aristotle still holds deep respect for the Princesses, even Luna, as he knows they hold more knowledge in their millenia of existence than he'll probably have by the end of his lifetime. Aristotle’s late wife Nausicaa Cloudrunner was a Wonderbolt (Generation 2). Nausicaa was famous for her elegant choreography and technical virtuosity. However, she was killed in a tragic training accident when Diomedes was still very young. Aristotle raised his son alone, enrolling him at Cloudsdale Academy when he was of age. Even with his busy career, he made every effort to visit his son when possible, forging a strong relationship with his only child. Even after the incidents at Academy, Aristotle reinforced the need for Diomedes to stand up for himself and find his own place in the world, regardless of how long it took or how many obstacles stood in the way. When Diomedes failed to qualify for the weather team, Aristotle did his best to help his son out, using his connections to help Diomedes find a job with Pony Mail. Even though he no longer lives with his father, Diomedes still writes home to Canterlot regularly. Aristotle sees the letters as one of the little joys in his life.
