Born in the arid town of Dodge Junction, Mist Weaver was initially content with her life there. Yet during her time at school, one of the subjects she learned about took her imagination by storm; the ocean. As a place utterly unlike where she lived, yet also an environment so vast and inaccessible to most ponies that its secrets remained mostly hidden, Mist constantly daydreamed about what the seas were like and savored to learn more about them.

Knowing this, her parents saved up enough money to take their filly on a vacation to Suntrot Bay. To put it mildly, Mist Weaver was absolutely enthralled by the sights before her. For the entire week of her vacation, she played in the surf and went snorkeling as much as she could. What interested the little girl most of all was how the seas teemed with so much wildlife; from the seagulls up above to the fishes and whales of the open water to bottom-dwelling eels and crabs. Miss Weaver knew when her vacation was over that when she grew up, she wanted to spend as much time around the ocean and its creatures as possible, and her cutie mark materialized right before she boarded the train back to Dodge.

History:

Mist Weaver was born to a loving couple of unicorn moisture collectors from Dodge Junction, who possessed the ability to magically extract excess atmospheric humidity as a way to collect water. In hindsight, it somewhat made sense then that their foal would grow up with a love for the sea and everything in it. Life in Dodge was unremarkable for Mist, more so after her first trip to Suntrot Bay, and she left the desert to live in Hoofington almost immediately after coming of age.

To make ends meet in her new city, Mist Weaver took a job as a guide for a whale watching company catering to tourists. In her spare time, the young mare dug through local libraries, visited museums, and took frequent trips to tide pools and what not to both unwind when she needed to and learn as much about the ocean as she could. It was during this time that her ability to connect with marine life bloomed; most notably, she grew attached to her Herring Gull companion Scuttle after numerous attempts by the then-young bird to eat her lunch. Mist never sought out higher education, but she was so content with her life that she didn’t felt she needed to.

One day while on the job, one of the whale watching tourists on Mist Weaver’s boat fell into the water while foolishly trying to pet a curious dolphin. Without thinking, Mist fished the unicorn stallion named Silver Mane from the sea; unexpectedly, the smitten jeweler from Fillydelphia sought her out a week later to thank her with free beautifully-crafted silver bracelets to wear on her hooves. The two ended up hitting things off as a couple, and in only a couple years’ time, they married.

Moving to Fillydelphia, Mist Weaver soon gave birth to a little filly she and her husband named Ice Storm, and they strove to shower their newborn child with all their love and affection. A few years later however, Mist got struck with the idea that as her parents brought her to the ocean, she could do even better and bring the ocean to the foals of Fillydelphia. Securing the financial backing of a local investor, the mare brought her vision to life by creating an aquatic park in Fillydelphia, where willing marine animals performed shows and otherwise interacted with park visitors.

While her business venture was an astounding success, the pressures of running the park and looking after its animals meant that Mist Weaver was hardly able to find time to have fun with her daughter Ice Storm or help her out with her issues at school. Mist and her husband meant well, but Ice in the end decided to run away from home and enroll at Princess Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns. Figuring that it was best to let her daughter choose her own path in life, Mist decided to give Ice space until she felt ready to reunite with her parents.

Sometime after Ice Storm was expected to graduate from the School, Mist Weaver made a trip to Canterlot in an attempt to meet her daughter again, but she found out to her dismay that Ice no longer lived in Canterlot. Due to this failure, Mist decided to finally hand over the aquatic park to somepony else and settle back down in Hoofington with her husband, who in turn decided to retire from his jewelry business. Today, the two of them (with the assistance of Mist’s gull Scuttle) run a marine sanctuary, and both are intent on connecting with their estranged daughter once more.....

Character Summary:

As the caretaker of a marine animal sanctuary on the coastline outside Hoofington, Mist Weaver takes it upon herself to care after local creatures (up to the size of dolphins) that other ponies locate for her. Such creatures are typically injured or sick, pregnant or nursing mothers, or have developed a taste for pony companionship. For the most part, the animals the mare puts into either her comfortably-sized topside pool, aquarium, and aviary end up returning to the wild, but every here and there a creature’s personality lends it able to be sold as a companion or show animal. Mist’s environmental work is largely funded by the city of Hoofington, but she also graciously accepts donations from local residents.

Assisting Mist Weaver for years now is her faithful pet, the Herring Gull she affectionately calls Scuttle. The bird can’t fly as fast as it used to, but it remains an effective sentinel who can alert his equine partner if any of her charges require immediate attention. However, Scuttle also possesses a mischievous streak as he will always try and steal bits of Mist’s dinner any opportunity it gets. On other occasions, Scuttle has been known to bring any discarded food or item on the beach to bring back to the unicorn, and the gull has certainly found a strange variety of things over the years. Since Mist Weaver was the sole pony who ever showed delight in Scuttle’s finds (at least some of them anyway), the bird therefore remains at the mare’s side.

Mist Weaver herself delights in being sociable with other ponies, and she frequently works hard to constantly make her home and marine sanctuary presentable to visitors. Not very surprising for the ocean lover, meditation on the beach is the most effective way for the unicorn to recuperate after working. When she has free time, Mist can be found usually on her small sailboat, swimming in the ocean, or playing host to her close friends; nearly all of which also depend on the sea for their livelihood in one form or another. As for magic ability, Mist is limited to very-basic telekinesis and the moisture-collecting spells that her parents had taught her as a child.

In her drive to maintain cleanliness and the well-being of her charges, Mist Weaver oftentimes has a tendency to nag and exhibit overprotectiveness, particularly to her husband Silver Mane and in the past, to her daughter Ice Storm too. Should something unfortunate happen, Mist is prone to overblown theatrics and taking immediate action to rectify the problem. Like all ocean storms though, Mist’s panic episodes always blow over with time, and the mare these days makes efforts to compensate by treating her close friends and husband with overbearing care and hospitality.

At this point in her life, the one thing Mist Weaver wants to accomplish the most is to reunite with Ice Storm. There isn’t much that the middle-aged unicorn can do at this point, seeing that she doesn’t even have a clue as to where her daughter now lives. Sometime before Ice left her parents for Canterlot, Mist passed down to her child the same four bracelets that Silver Mane had made for her long ago; Mist hopes that Ice Storm has not only kept the bracelets, but that she shares a similar desire to reunite with her family.....

Note: This OC is the mother of Ice Storm, and I have approval from Ice Storm's RPer to apply for this character.
