Bits, bits, and more bits. Bits to the left, bits to the right, bits probably hiding away in secret pockets if the stories about certain high-end clientele could be believed. Jackpot didn't care about the more personal enrichment that his financial situation afforded him, as his tastes were more than adequately covered by the mere fact he owned the whole shebang. No, the important thing about the bits is how it was reinvested. Better games, better entertainment, better food, better lodgings, better staff. Each bit he spent was two bits he would earn down the road and this became a self-perpetuating system that was the cornerstone of the young stallion's inherited business empire. There was a little bit of ruthless aggressiveness required just to survive in the gambling business, but Jackpot had found that he could ably provide ten pounds of pleasure and joy for every ounce of sadness his establishment inflicted. Maybe in the end that wouldn't count for much, but as he sipped on a nice apple cider in the main lounge of The Tops, he didn't really care.

"Ooh, an especially sour blend today?" He asked, licking up the last in his glass as he gently laid it down. The bartender smiled and took the glass away.

"Boss, you just drank thirty bits worth of hard cider. Leave some for the customers, okay?" She asked, though all of her effort couldn't hide her Stalliongrad accent. Or her Stalliongrad face, for that matter.

"Well, you can put it on my tab."

"You said to close your tab."

"Now why would I say something dumb like that?"

"Because it was bad business-" Jackpot reached over the counter to grab something sweeter and she telekinetically grasped his hoof and put it right into his cheek, "-and you said you were drinking too much."

He smiled.

"Good mare, good mare. I should probably make the rounds, huh?"

"Probably."

"Save the '11 Pre-Moon Sweet Apple Orchards for me, alright?"

"Depends. Is there a bonus in it for me?"

"Probably not."

"Get to work already."

He laughed once more ad trotted out of the bar section of the casino into the gaming hall, taking a deep breath. He had a meeting with a certain famous pony to attend to. But that was just one of many things on his docket.

"Ahh, smells like...excitement!"

Artificial Harmonic had a gig in two hours. He was supposed to be playing at the casino that night, but he was fed up.

Artificial had once been a part of one of the greatest rock bands Equestria had ever experienced, Trial Scene. They sold thousands, if not millions, of albums to eager fans across Equestria. Artificial had been the frontpony of that band, the lead singer and bassist. It had been his band. His. Band. After disputes with other band members, the band broke up.

Artificial was now struggling with a strange solo career. He had fronted a cult band, and many fans had stuck it out with him. He still had a wide, varied fan base. But everywhere he went he still found that people kept shouting "play the song about the teachers!". They were, of course, talking about his incredibly influential song "Let Me Fly", one of Trial Scene's biggest hits. It discussed the education system in immense detail.

As Artificial skulked onto the floor, he realized how unhealthy it was for him to walk away from feeling frustrated and decide to gamble. However, Artificial felt lucky. He always felt lucky. This night was going to go well.

There was hardly ever an archaeological dig out in the desert for Dr. Merlot that didn’t end with a stay in Las Pegasus. As a gentlecolt of fine taste, Merlot desired only the finest treatment for a stallion of his stature. And lately, The Tops casino has been giving the khaki unicorn the best bang for his bit, receiving plenty of free “comps” and other perks in exchange for a relatively-paltry sum spent at the gambling tables. The Tops may not be the most exclusive casino in town, but it suited Merlot’s purposes just fine as a cost-affordable means to wind down here and there while remaining in respectable company.

Strutting around the casino floor wearing his standard white suit and fedora, Merlot looked like money and he knew it. His plan consisted of hitting the blackjack table, making a few high-end bets to placate the casino’s desire to make money, and spending the rest of the evening relishing the free dining and entertainment The Tops would be providing him with for his stay. With any luck, Merlot might win it big too; anything could happen in Las Pegasus.....

The Las Pegasus casino scene was Serendipity's life. She had lived it and breathed it since the very beginning. She often touted herself as Las Pegasus' luckiest mare, and in her mind it was no lie. She was a mare of many pursuits; she loved traveling... she loved meeting new ponies. She also really loved putting her famous luck to the test-- that's where lounging around the city's numerous casino resorts came in.

Maybe to some that would seem odd; dealing the tables at the High Stakes Casino Resort was her day job. Surely it wouldn't be much fun for her to come scope out some rival joint on her days off. If one knew she was technically an heiress to the High Stakes name and brand it would probably seem even stranger still. Serendipity didn't quite see it like that. Work and play were two very different things, and besides, she knew the staff and they system at High Stakes too well at this point--winning there wasn't even a challenge anymore. While Serendipity probably wouldn't have said The Tops was quite as classy or as clean as her dear ol' daddy's place it had it's charm. So far she had found some amusement... not to mention a fine stack of bits.

"Looks like I win again," she said with a sunny smile to the frustrated croupier working the blackjack table that was currently fast losing her attention. Games were fun, but Serendipity was beginning to crave some legit excitement. Schooling these subpar dealers was one thing, but part of her wanted this to be a somewhat more memorable. "Time to walk away, I think. Thanks for the fun time, cutie!" she said as she gathered up her chips and blew a little kiss to the mare at the table.

Serendipity wandered off, intent to find some new mischief. She stopped to scope out the hall. Pony watching had always been a sort of hobby of hers, and with her dark designer sunglasses on she hardly looked suspicious doing it. She found that if one was to look around any place, there were certain ponies who just stood out beyond the rest. The Tops' gaming hall happened to have several at the moment. Chief was the king of the castle; Jackpot was his name, and his face was well known to Serendipity, as those of most of the city's major players were. He was the big shot of Tops, and as big shots went, he was probably the youngest, cutest and most eligible of any of them, though if you asked Seren he lacked the shrewdness and savvy that kept her daddy at the top of the ladder. All the same, it was interesting to see him out in the gaming hall. She had to wonder what kinda business he was up to here.

Other than the big boss, there were a few other big shots that stood out of the crowd. There was a rather familiar looking stallion enjoying the games--a handsome one with a long mane. Serendipity couldn't really recall where exactly she had seen him before, but she pegged him for a musician of some note. From the way he stood out, he was more the successful sort and less the desperate too. He was curious, but there was another stallion caught the sultry mare's attention. His khaki coat, his immaculate white suit and hat... This one struck her instantly as a stallion of high class. There was something about the way he carried himself that made him seem like the sort who would offer up the interesting conversation. He was moving toward the blackjack tables too, which was just perfect.

"Out for some blackjack today are we, handsome?" she purred as she approached him casually. "Not a bad way to take in the bits if you know how to use that head of yours," she said, jangling her rather full saddlebag. "But it's not a very social game... especially given that, compared to the rival joints, the girls dealing here tend to leave a little something to be desired when it comes to personality," she added teasingly, giving a wink and a playful giggle.

Scouting for an open blackjack table, Dr. Merlot’s search got interrupted as a lavender pegasus came up to initiate random chatter with him. The gentlecolt’s first instinct would have been to dismiss her, seeing that he couldn’t recognize the mare as somepony worth knowing, and thus worthy of his time. Her overbearing and undignified advances also didn’t help her case, Merlot being used to the pleasantries and formalities of high-status society.

And yet, the mare did bring up a good point about the quality of the staff at The Tops, proving that she at least had some wit on her. Deciding to take the mare’s conversational bait, Merlot smirked as he tipped his hat in the lady’s direction; “I’m not one to complain, but you are indeed correct right about the fillies who work here. One does tend to find more... sociable staff at the higher-end resorts in Las Pegasus. Of course, the less exclusive places like The Tops serve their purpose well.”

Offering his hoof for a shake, the playcolt confidently chuckled before introducing himself to the sunglasses-wearing pegasus; “My name is Merlot... Dr. Merlot. And who might you be?”

Trixie never thought she would find herself in this position; the proud azure coloured unicorn once had her very own business of great renown, her itinerant yet magnificent magical show from her own beautifully crafted stage that fit magically into her equally elegant wagon. Of course hard times had fallen upon Trixie since, some of which she would only reluctant admit, were the fault of her own false bravado, and need for petty revenge. Not all of the recent past was bad though, she had met Doctor Hooves, who gave her something to strive for once again, adventure, treasure, new magic! Unfortunately all that adventuring cost bits and the Doctor wasn't very good at making or acquiring any. Thus it was up to Trixie to make some while her erstwhile companion found himself away at some distant land getting into who knows what.

Of course Trixie had one problem, she couldn't go back to her old discredited routine, even certain areas of Equestria were generally off limits given her maligned reputation; something she couldn't argue as entirely unjustified. So here she was in Las Pegasus, a city she had never set hoof in before, doing her first magic show as some sort of bit act. It felt humiliating, beneath her station, but what choice did she have? She needed to rebuild her reputation, and more importantly she needed bits.

Well she would just make the best of it and put on a magnificent magical display. First she had to meet this "Jackpot" who ran the place, hopefully he wasn't sleazy, or incompetent. Still her hopes were not high, she hadn't even been given any accommodations yet! She didn't relish the idea of another night sleeping in some shed's haystack again!

Trixie looked about as she sat alone at a small round table near the bar; ponies milled about the tables with their games of chance. It was tempting to try some herself, but the azure unicorn didn't even have enough bits for an opening bid. At least the atmosphere was exciting and colourful, with plenty of eye candy, one lavender mare in particular with a navy blue mane and a triple seven cutie mark was especially pleasing on the eyes. There was no time for socializing though, first thing first, make sure she got a good deal on this gig.

And something to eat, she was starving!

It was another one of those days for Light Harmony. Waking up in the city of Las Pegasus brought a new adventure everyday. There was no telling what would happen in this city. No telling. While Light lived in this city..he still wasn't used to it. Which was strange since he had lived here for a while. Though he wasn't used to the city..he still loved it here.

The bright lights and entertainment brought ponies from all over Equestria to the bustling city. Not to mention the fact that non pegasus ponies had the grand opportunity to trot along clouds and not have the fear of falling. But that was just one of the many things about Las Pegasus that made it so great.

As Light trotted down the road he noticed something. A casino sitting proudly. He smirked at the building and saw a few ponies going into it and a few coming out. Light had never been a gambler. He didn't not like the idea of gambling or playing the games..he had just never tried it.

Light had never been in this casino before. There were a lot of places Light had never been in in Las Pegasus. But all those other places don't matter.

Light approached the casino and entered.

When he entered his eyes had a bit of adjusting to do. There were flashing lights from the slot machines and stage lights and all types of lights. He shook his head a bit and finally he could see properly.

He took a good look around. A few ponies were playing the slot machines and a few were sitting around and chatting. He saw a place that looked like where ponies could get drinks but he didn't know. Light turned his head and saw more of the same.

He saw an azure unicorn sitting by herself at a round table. He had a thought to go join her...but she looked like she was onto something. She didn't look mean or anything. She just looked deep in thought. He didn't want to disrupt her thoughts.

As he turned his head he saw a stallion in a white suit and a mare playing a game of Blackjack. Again he had never played the game before. He noticed that the both the stallion and the mare looked as if they were quite used to the lifestyle of Las Pegasus. Light was a bit jealous. But he had no mean to be jealous. He was here to enjoy himself.

So Light decided. He sighed and then trotted towards the same table as the azure unicorn whom he had never seen before.

He sat down next to her. And in those few seconds he had to make a desc ion or else this would get awkward. He had already pulled up a chair and everything. So Light took a quick breath and spoke to the mare.

"Hello there!." He gave her a friendly wave. "Do you like it here? Well I mean..Um...are you having a good time?" He gave her a small smile.

He wondered if she would speak back to him. But if she just got up and left he would just smile and blame himself.

Jackpot sauntered about with a certain amount of excited swagger, giddily anticipating the day's events just as he did every day of his life. The fun part about being the owner of a casino was every part about being an owner of a casino, and he knew that his one and only job was making sure that everypony else had a good time in some semblance of equality to him. They wouldn't make anywhere near the amount of money he would but by celestia that was a nearly impossible task! He could swim in an Iron Pony size pool of hundred bit coins and still have enough leftover to buy all of The Strand and remodel them in silly fashions. That didn't sound like a bad idea either, but alas, he had other plans, like hiring musicians and magicians and five-star chefs and making pools out of obsidian for his most potent guests. He made his way through the gaming hall, noting with pleasure the amount of excited squeals that erupted every so often.

Ponies were winning- ponies were happy.

Good times were his business model as they kept the ponies coming in and throwing their bits at anything and everything, though the real kicker was the food, lodgings, and entertainment- he broke the bank there. Speaking of breaking things, he was coming upon a stallion who may consider his career a broken record. To Jackpot however, he was one of the greatest living artists and he was more than happy to host him and his new catalogue of sure-fire successes. He trotted behind Harmonic and placed a reassuring hoof on his shoulder.

"Mr. Harmonic, what a pleasure to have you here! Just so you know, I checked your suite and it's great. If you have any problems with the meal service or gaming credits, just give me a holler. I'm a huge fan, can't wait for the show!" He finished with a smile, nodding imperceptibly to the dealer and he took the meaning. Artificial would win the table that day.

Jackpot continued trotting about, encouraging and generally being friendly to his patrons. He noted a rather sweet looking mare who, if her cutie mark was any indication, was the fabulous Serendiptity. He had visited where she had worked a few times and had the fortune of seeing her a few times at other casinos as well- well traveled and knowledgeable of the city and her establishments. Jackpot wondered what a mare of her caliber was doing here- and then look at that fine gent she was speaking with. Well, he wasn't going to get in the way of love's blossoming march, but what sort of host would be be if he didn't at least meet and greet the couple?

"Welcome to The Tops, madame and monsieur. I'm Jackpot and it's my honor to host you. If you have any questions, my staff will be more than happy to help, or give me a holler up at my suite! Door's always open," He said with cheer, patting the stallion but not on the clothes- looked too fancy for that.

Then he turned around and saw the object of his first test of the day- finishing the contract with The Great and Powerful Trixie, an infamous magician. All publicity was good publicity! He trotted up to her with as much regal poise as he could muster.

"Trixie! How wonderful it is to see you made it. We have much to discuss in the contract we have drawn up- how many shows, bits per, meal credits, lodgings, gaming credits- and less time than I'd wish. Come, follow me to the restaurant. You will find kelp to die for there!" He then bowed and let his hoof indicate the path forward, happy to have yet another fine performer an stunningly beautiful mare in his casino.

“I’m not one to complain, but you are indeed correct right about the fillies who work here. One does tend to find more... sociable staff at the higher-end resorts in Las Pegasus. Of course, the less exclusive places like The Tops serve their purpose well.”

Serendipity giggled at the stallion's reply. Not because what was said was all so groundbreaking, but more because she was impressed by the pony saying it. He was definitely the charming type. Not too exaggerated or flashy, but oozing class. She could only assume he knew his way with mares. He was the sort of stallion who could be dangerous for the inexperienced. Serendipity was sure that even so she was more than a match for him. She was after all, even more clever than her reputation might suggest.

“My name is Merlot... Dr. Merlot. And who might you be?”

]"Oho, so we're a doctor, huh? Medical? There is something to be said for a stallion who can give a thorough physical..." Serendipity slyly commented, giving another affected giggle.

"It's Serendipity. I work at the High Stakes... uptown in the cloud level; sure a stud of your taste would know it," she went on to answer his question with a soft smirk.

"Welcome to The Tops, madame and monsieur. I'm Jackpot and it's my honor to host you. If you have any questions, my staff will be more than happy to help, or give me a holler up at my suite! Door's always open,"

Jackpot approached them then to offer his greetings. Apparently the guy had no problem pinpointing who the true very important ponies were. It was certainly a show of class at the very least. Maybe this place deserved a little more respect than she gave it. At the very least, the cute big shot deserved her thanks.

"Well my thanks to our oh so gracious and good looking host," she said, lowering her shades so he could see her stare. "I certainly won't hesitate to come calling if the evening decides to go sour..."

She gave another giggle as he walked off, her eyes coming to focus on the mare he was striding toward. This unicorn was a real beauty. With her lush blue coat and strong features, she'd have been striking in any situation. With Jackpot moving toward her though, it was evident she was no common guest. Had she seen her first, she might have went that way instead of toward Dr. Charm. All the same, she did make the mare a little curious.

"Hehe. So is that the sort our young Mr. Jackpot goes for?" she started with a laugh. "Wonder who she is..."

One of the weird quirks about Las Pegasus was that at casinos like The Tops, a gentlecolt like Dr. Merlot couldn’t be sure of type of mares would be encountered on a particular evening. The vast majority of mares were mere simpletons, only there to play slots mindlessly like the helpless plebeians they were. Once in a while, a lovely mademoiselle of proper status and demeanor would drop by to actually give Merlot a proper lady to pursue. More likely though, he’d stumble upon a mare such as the one with him now, all too eager in their quest for a good time. Not only did the khaki unicorn consider such mares vulgar in their manners, but they also lacked the all-too important virtue of providing a suitable challenge for his flirtations.

Dr. Merlot gave a modest laugh at the lavender pegasus’s quip on medical doctors, just enthusiastic enough to make her think he wasn’t offended. The gentlecolt however did raise an eye when the mare provided her name: Serendipity. As a patron of the High Stakes casino, the wildly-grinning Merlot knew her name well enough; “Ah of course, I’m acquainted with your father as a matter of fact; he’s a good stallion! I must say, High Stakes runs the classiest establishment in town.” Thanks to Serendipity’s revelation, Merlot more or less forgave her unrefined nature now that he knew her as the daughter of somepony worth knowing.

Before the two could speak more about the other casino, the owner of The Tops came by to greet them. Merlot admired Jackpot’s hustle when it came to running his casino on a satisfactory level, but it’d be quite a while before he’d develop the gravitas and aura of dominance possessed by veteran casino owners like High Stakes. Until then for Merlot, Jackpot wasn’t quite yet a pony worth knowing despite his budding potential to become one. Nodding his head, Merlot smiled as Jackpot left and went about his business; at least that unicorn knew better than to ruffle his clothing.

Yet in another twist, Merlot observed Jackpot trotting towards who appeared to be a familiar face; an azure unicorn mare. Unfortunately, the archaeologist couldn’t claim to have met the girl, Trixie, under pleasant circumstances. Even more unfortunate, unless one believed the vile rumors from that quaint town Ponyville, Trixie simply wasn’t a pony worth knowing. Therefore, Merlot lied as he stared distantly; “Hmmm... I don’t know who she is either. Could be anypony.” The less said about that cruise liner incident, the better.....

Trixie sighed as she traced the edge of the glass of water in front of her with her hoof; the only drink she could afford. Everything hinged on this deal, otherwise she’d have to try her luck in the dusty towns of the Roughrider Ridge and she did not relish the idea of “roughing it” among the rocks and shoals of that craggy valley.

Trixie looked up as she suddenly heard a greeting tossed her way. She didn’t even notice that the white unicorn sat next to her before he spoke, lost as she was to her disparaging thoughts. Although Trixie initially didn’t mind the company, her face went flat as her eye brow rose at him posing such a ridiculous question, “does it look like the Gre- Er.. Does it look like I am having a great time?!” Trixie looked up and waved her hooves in frustration, “imagine being surrounded by all this luxury, all this excitement, all this extravagance, and not being able to enjoy the smallest bit of it?! So no, commandant of the oblivious, Trixie is not having a good time, thank you very much! Hmph!”

Well at least it felt good to get that off her chest. Trixie sighed, she actually felt a little bad for unloading on the stallion; why was she just a softie! “Look… uhh, whatever your name is, it isn’t your fault, Trixie is hear for a job and thus far the management of this place has failed to acknowledge even Trixie’s existence.”

Of course Trixie’s luck would have it at the very moment the owner of the casino approached her. She was about to unload on the stallion, but held herself back, reminding herself how much she needed this job, still, she wasn’t going to let him know that! “Well… I suppose if you are paying for dinner, Trixie will listen to what you have to offer for her most majestic, astonishing, and beautiful performances in the fine arts of magic. Of course the Great yet Parched Trixie will need the finest sparkling cider as well and if you are willing to provide, lead on!”

As Trixie stood up, she turned to that other white unicorn and smiled, “perhaps I will see you around the casino, ummmm..” She really must remember to bother to ask ponies names sometime.

They entered the dining room and all Jackpot had to do was nod and smile at the staff, who without hesitation ran off- both to give him and Trixie some privacy and so they could hop to the preorder that he had set up. For all of his bluster and kindness that perhaps gave some the impression that he was less serious or intelligent, he was a man of almost unlimited resources and didn't leave business to chance. He was going to give her a five star meal from his five star cooks, plucked from remote locations where their talents went unknown and underappreciated. Or maybe they were passed over because they were difficult to work with and casinos wanted drones in the kitchen. His servers were darn good at their job, but again passed over by others- maybe they had too much of an attitude or weren't super models. But here, they were great, awesome, incredible, friendly and dedicated. She might have high caliber tastes and they would be met and exceeded tonight.

"Sit down, feel free to take a look through out drink selection. We have some amazing sparkling cider, Trixie. But as amazing as it is-" The server came and delivered his own sparkling cider, a vintage year to be sure and one of Sweet Apple Acres' finest ever made,"thank you," he nodded and the server left, leaving two menus. He didn't bother opening his, having already pre-ordered. He popped open the bottle which gave a crunchy crack and pop as it went off, pouring a small glass for him and her, "feel free, But as I was saying, as amazing as this is I'm sure you're more interested in the contract. So, let me state what I have in mind," He finished. His horn lit up and the contract appeared before him, settling next to Trixie gently.

"Sixty shows. Each show is two hours long, with an hour afterwards dedicated to working with your fans. You will also be obligated to attend and perform at several events sponsored by the casino. We also get a ten percent cut of all merchandise sales, and we will need you to attend several shoots and interviews promoting your shows here. In return, you get paid one hundred bits per show. This goes up every ten shows, ending at two-hundred bits for your final ten shows. For the first five shows we have already taken care of your merchandising figures, but after that, you get a one-hundred and eighty bit budget for your merchandise a night. You may direct this anyway you please and if it is successful, the budget will increase.

You get free lodging every night in one of our deluxe suites, which patrons normally pay four-hundred bits a night for, more depending on conditions. You also get a thirty bit drink allowance, fifty-bit meal allowance and a fifty-bit gaming allowance every day, and both stack up if unused. On weekends when you don't have shows you are also entitled to a 5% shopping allowance- 5% being of our total profits from the shows. Those allowances are good in only a select number of locations, but hey, better than nothing. Beyond that, we've taken care of crews for your shoots, interviews, reel to reel tapings for the tape we will see of your best show, stage technicians, and materials for your show. All in all, just by completing the contract you will make 9,000 bits plus what you make in merchandise and any other revenue generation not covered by this contract. We are also giving you nearly 40,000 bits in allowances and 5,000 bits for materials and crew. The contract makes it clear that the 54,000 bits spent by The Tops to make this contract possible will be recouped by your labor for us. Blah blah blah legal mumbo jumbo," he rolled his eyes.

"Point is: I'll give you 9,000 bits, the best rooms, food, drinks, service, gaming, and fun in Las Pegasus in return for your awesome performances. Sign the contract and it's a deal, madame," He finished, levitating the quill onto the paper as his eyes glittered with excitement-

"Yes! I told you the kelp was delicious!" He smiled as a large plate of it was dropped in front of him. He looked up to her.

"Awfully big plate. Want some?" Or you could order and wait a little, he thought to himself. He was fine either way. The kelp was amazing.

does it look like the Gre- Er.. Does it look like I am having a great time?!”

“imagine being surrounded by all this luxury, all this excitement, all this extravagance, and not being able to enjoy the smallest bit of it?! So no, commandant of the oblivious, Trixie is not having a good time, thank you very much! Hmph!”

Well that was...unexpected. Light sat still the whole time the azure mare was ranting at him. All he did was ask her if she was having a good time. But that's life he guessed. He assumed that the mare's name was Trixie on account of that she said it once. He assumed she was talking about herself but why in third person? Light never talked in third person. But he might try it now because of this mare.

Nah. He would stick to talking normally.

“Look… uhh, whatever your name is, it isn’t your fault, Trixie is hear for a job and thus far the management of this place has failed to acknowledge even Trixie’s existence.”

Light raised his eyebrows at this. He understood. This...Trixie was job hunting. He knew that it was slightly difficult to find a job. But that all really depended on the pony's cutie mark. He didn't knwo what her cutie mark was. But just then another pony came up and talked to Trixie. This pony seemed to be the owner of the casino. And also it seemed that Trixie got a job! Light wanted to congratulate her but he barely knew her. He didn't want to be yelled at again. But then the two trotted off and Light smiled. He felt happy for the mare though.

He turned his head and looked away for the two ponies to look around the casino again.

“perhaps I will see you around the casino, ummmm..”

Light turned his head back to Trixie and smiled.

"It's. Light."

He let out a small chuckle and nodded at her. Then Trixie and the manager left and went into another part of the casino. Light didn't mind being alone one bit. So he let out a small sigh and then kept the same smile on his face.

"Well. That was interesting."

“Ah of course, I’m acquainted with your father as a matter of fact; he’s a good stallion! I must say, High Stakes runs the classiest establishment in town.”

Serendipity smirked and laughed. "Oh? So you're one of daddy's friends then? How funny. Can't say I recall seeing you around. I'd remember a face as cute as yours," she said in a flirty voice.

"You must have come around when I was out seeing the world," she said, grinning playfully.

“Hmmm... I don’t know who she is either. Could be anypony.”

"Oh, I know when I'm looking at somepony who could be anypony, and that pony isn't that pony. I like the look in her eyes, and that our dear friend Jackpot feels the need to lead her to the back all but confirms she's a pony worth knowing," she said as she watched Jackpot lead the cute mare away. She smiled and shook her head.

"Maybe we'll see her again," she said through a small sigh before looking back toward Merlot. "Not that you won't be entertainment enough, Doc," she started with a giggle.

"Why don't you tell me a little about what it's like being the illustrious Dr. Merlot?" she started, half-teasingly.

Dr. Merlot still couldn’t say that he cared very much for Serendipity’s brazen advances towards him, but at least the mare possessed a manner of wit in her. “Likewise,” the smirking stallion quipped; “You must have been here in town whenever I’ve been out traveling the world myself. It’s funny then that we only meet each other face-to-face... at someplace other than your father’s casino, no less.” The khaki unicorn couldn’t help but chuckle at that thought.

Unfortunately, Merlot couldn’t quite agree with his companion’s assessment of Trixie. Anypony who orbited around a half-mad loser of a wandering stallion could hardly be a person of repute. Far more likely, the up-and-coming casino owner must have been charmed somehow by the blue-coated unicorn mare. Trixie’s purpose remained unknown to the gentlecolt, but if Merlot remembered correctly, she was some sort of D-list magician who made her living off impressionable rural rubes who couldn’t afford to see a proper stage show.

As he finally reached the blackjack table, Merlot acquiesced to Serendipity’s request to know what he does for a living... quite happily like always; “Well I’m an archaeologist mademoiselle; no, I’m not a dim-witted temple raider who recklessly charge into ruins for personal amusement while destroying thousands of years’ worth of history in the process. I ensure that historically-significant sites and relics are preserved, analyzed, and eventually gifted to the ponies of Equestria so that future generations can witness for themselves how we came to be, instead of merely reading about it in some dusty book.” Merlot paused to look intensely into Serendipity’s eyes and devilishly smirked before delivering his punch line; “I should add though that my discoveries also help authors figure out what to write in those, heh heh, dusty history books.....”

As Trixie followed the brown unicorn proprietor, she heard the other unicorn whom earlier came to her table first finally call out his name. Trixie often would ignore such attempts at friendship if it didn't selfishly benefit her, that is at least how she used to do things. She wasn't sure why, but she felt she needed to at least acknowledge the white stallion's willingness to share his name; maybe it was Whooves rubbing off on her, or even those.. Ponyvillians. For whatever reason it felt like the right thing to do, "well perhaps I will see you around the casino, Light." Trixie gave a wink and trotted into the restaurant.

As Trixie sat down at the table she found the situation much more to her liking, being pampered with the best cider, and why not? Wasn't she worth it? Of course she was. Not saying a word, she sipped the drink while she waited, with some trepidation, to hear what deal this no doubt shifty stallion had to offer.

She did not expect what was proposed.

As Trixie listened to the elaborate contract, she wasn't sure what to think. Sixty shows? That sure seemed like an awful lot; the azure unicorn never did more that a couple shows per town when she traveled around in her wagon, as it was always a good idea never to over stay one's welcome, especially if the locals got a but too curious about methods of her illusions or that she…slightly embellished her stories. This contract though tied her down to a single place for a long time, but it did sound generous, well sort of; actually Trixie could only look confused at the sheer amount of details thrown her way, unsure if this Jackpot was attempting to bamboozle her or not.

Finally the stallion summarized his long monologue, on it's head the deal sounded decent even if it meant being stuck in Las Pegasus for two months, still Trixie was cavalier, "well… you could have told the Great and Bored Trixie the bottom line in the beginning instead of all that… Legalese." Trixie simply waved her his despairingly in his direction as she looked at her drink. Truth was she was using her dismissiveness to hide the fact she was uncertain if there was some sort fraudulent catch in all of this. Still, she couldn't just sit there silent while mulling over the numbers for too long otherwise she would look indecisive, and thus some sort of push over, and Trixie was certainly no push over!

There was only one way to bid for time and see how serious this Jackpot was, by haggling! "9,000 bits? Well that certainly sounds… interesting. The good room, service, and food is of course, expected for somepony of such quality showponyship and magical ability as the magnificently talented Trixie, but to ask of Trixie's exquisite services for such a long period of time.." Trixie swirled around the glass before taking a drink with an air of confidence, it was time to gamble, "well that is worth at least 12,000 bits."

It was time to see how serious, and legitimate, this casino owner was.

Artificial Harmonic scanned the area for something to play. Something he was good at. Harmonic had always considered himself an excellent gambler, but he hadn't ever had too much experience. The most he ever did was play in casinos with bands or by himself. His job was to entertain not be entertained. He had always enjoyed playing blackjack, and noticing an open table, sauntered towards it with an air of confidence.

Nearing the table he saw two ponies looking ready to play. A tan unicorn stallion with a bright blue mane stood talking to another, and Harmonic could hear him talking about archaeology. Perhaps, Harmonic noted to himself, that was his career. The stallion was dressed finely, and Harmonic looked down at himself to see nothing but a pouch filled with cash and headphones hanging around his neck. Harmonic hardly ever went without music.

Next to the stallion stood... hellllooo...

A beautiful mare. She had a lovely lavender coat and brown eyes, on top of it all a navy mane that hung loose and free. Navy curls fell, and her cutie mark appeared to be three sevens lined up next to one another. Harmonic figured it was time to start talking to the pair, considering he'd be playing blackjack with them.

"Hullo there! My name's Artificial Harmonic. Fancy a game of blackjack, I s'ppose?"

You didn't become the head of one of Las Pegasus' most successful casinos without being able to read ponies. Nor did you get there by not doing your research. Her insults were a bluff intended to misdirect him, a common negotiating tactic with some has-been performers. Play up your indifference, your take it or leave it attitude. Haggle, get concessions. Unluckily for Trixie, he knew more about her than she knew about him. He was a fan of her act, even knowing most of it was bull-hocky. This also meant that to a certain degree he knew of her troubles, and knew that her options were limited almost as much as her finances were probably laden with debt. She held no power here and had few options otherwise, and he knew it.

"Well, I'll make sure to get to the point quicker next time. My philosophy however has always been to let the talent know the vitals of their contract rather than trust them to read the absurdly long legalese on the documents themselves. But onto more substantive points..." He kept up his smile as he finished his half of the kelp, eyes not growing an inch more vicious nor his body language changing at all.

"9,000 bits is above market. I could hire out different sets of acts for that time and end up paying 6,000 bits plus perhaps only half as much overall. I'd say that I could fill out the venue and only spend twenty-five thousand bits, maybe less. Heck, tonight we have one of Equestria's most famous musicians, Artificial Harmonic, and I'm spending only about a quarter for his performance as I am on you on a nightly basis, and the venue sold out hours after the show was announced. I could go out and sign up talent that I can pay less than you, make more money off of, and have less problems with sponsors who take issue with me promoting a magician with an infamous streak," He used the napkin to tidy himself up and leaned back.

"But no, I'm signing you for one reason: I'm a fan of you and your act. You're a natural entertainer and a beautiful mare, and I think you can do great here. I'm paying you three thousand bits more and investing a lot of my money into you and your act to make you happy. 9,000 bits with all those perks are far more than fair- I challenge you to find any establishment in all of Equestria that will give you as good a deal. I had to fight the board to give you what you've been given," Jackpot spoke truthfully, and though it wasn't hard to do, championing his little fanboy act against the wishes of every executive on the board was something he didn't imagine he'd ever need to do.

Trixie tried to not look uncomfortable but her look of surprise betrayed her. He called her bluff, and could easily get away with paying her, or worse still, somepony else, far less bits and he knew it. Any further haggling over price on Trixie's part would be from position of weakness, and they both knew it, and thus to continue haggling would be a fool's errand, and likely find the azure unicorn out on the street with no bits except what she could collect into her hat through charity by street performing.

She wasn't going back to those days of humiliation, not again!

Trixie magically lifted her glass and quickly took a sip of the sparkling cider, "well I suppose 9,000 bits would be adequate, although the Great and Powerful Trixie can assure you her performance is superior to that of any musician, even if they can play ten instruments!" At least that sounded self-assured; sure there was no way to bargain for more, but at least she didn't have to appear weak.

What did surprise Trixie even more was this Jackpot's revelation that he was a personal fan. Truth was as much as she had confidence in her own performances, she rarely had any personal fans, outside of young colts and fillies at is, certainly never an adult stallion of some status and success, but hey, why not? She was the most talented performer out there, not to mention one of the most stunning, was she not? "Well it is true my handsome admirer, Trixie is one of the most talented ponies around! Very well then, I will sign your contract and give your patrons a show they won't forget!"

With a huge, confident smile, Trixie took the contract and quill pin and wrote her name in large, almost calligraphic cursive before pushing it back at Jackpot. "Now, will my act be the only one, or will it be part of a group? Will Trixie have main billing? Oh.. When does Trixie begin her dazzling of her audience?"

“Likewise. You must have been here in town whenever I’ve been out traveling the world myself. It’s funny then that we only meet each other face-to-face... at someplace other than your father’s casino, no less.”

Serendipity grinned. It was interesting trying to figure out this oh so refined Dr. Merlot. The look on his face told her that he didn't fully agree with the things she was saying and more over that her antics likely made him a little uncomfortable. This was altogether typical of stallions, and especially stallions convinced they were right. That was find though. It made the game of figuring this pony out all the more fun. She could already tell he was going to warrant an entry in her notebook.

“Well I’m an archaeologist mademoiselle; no, I’m not a dim-witted temple raider who recklessly charge into ruins for personal amusement while destroying thousands of years’ worth of history in the process. I ensure that historically-significant sites and relics are preserved, analyzed, and eventually gifted to the ponies of Equestria so that future generations can witness for themselves how we came to be, instead of merely reading about it in some dusty book. I should add though that my discoveries also help authors figure out what to write in those, heh heh, dusty history books.....”

The pegasus smirked. How very curious.

"I see, I see. So our refined Dr. Merlot spends his days digging through the dirt for curiosities, much like an adorable little foal playing in a sandbox," she said with a hard laugh.

"You know, I've never particularly understood why some ponies get so hung up on objects," she started. Her hoof went to adjust her sunglasses. "These shades were custom made specifically for me by an acclaimed Itailian designer." She held her right forehoof out then, letting the pair of shimmering golden bracelets worn on it dangle. "I've already forgotten how many thousands of bits the Manehattan boutique where I got these priced them for... but it doesn't really matter. They're all pretty little things, but what value do they really have to anyone?"

Serendipity looked upward as she received a single bit from her bag and flipped it upward then caught it. "Millions of bits exchange hooves in a place like this each day. This one bit's probably been touched by hundreds... maybe thousands of other ponies before me and it will invariably be touched by even more ponies after I'm rid of it. All things are pretty much the same as that, which is what makes them so dull. Maybe you can learn of the past from the pretty little trinkets in your museums, but eventually you'll just be a part of that past and what will you have ultimately gotten out of them? Knowledge? The idea that these little things can help you understand the ponies who held them before. That's entirely misaimed as I see it," Serendipity spoke in an understated, offhand voice, a smirk on her face.

"After all, I can tell you right now that you can understand me a lot better by looking me in the eyes than you can looking at these sunglasses," she said, as she lowered her shades and made eye contact with the doctor. "Maybe it's just me, but I've never been overly concerned with things past. None of it can be of as useful or rewarding to me as the ponies of the here and now."

"Hullo there! My name's Artificial Harmonic. Fancy a game of blackjack, I s'ppose?"

Serendipity was curious to see how the doctor would reply to her impromptu pseudo philosophical rambling, but before he had a chance another pony approached the blackjack table they were now at. It was the musician she had noticed before. So Artificial Harmonic? She thought he had sounded familiar. She was somewhat familiar with Trial Scene, though not particularly a huge fan. She probably favored their earliest work over the popular stuff.

"How cute," Serendipity said with a giggle. "But that's more a question you should ask of the dealer. Blackjack isn't a game where you're exactly competing with the other players after all."

"That said, you can deal me in, sweetie," she said to the mare dealing at the table. "We'll see if my winning luck pulls through once more."

Looking back toward Harmonic, she grinned. "So, mister rock star... you must have a lot of confidence, gracing us with your presence, and only hours before your scheduled to take to the main stage..."

Dr. Merlot knew of plenty of bleeding heart historians who couldn’t bear to hear ponies mention how much they detested the thought of learning about the past. The khaki unicorn however... he couldn’t care less when people expressed that line of thought. He could live with the thought of people detesting history or simply remain ignorant of it; as far as Merlot was concerned, they were lost causes not worth spending time on. All the same though, the gentlecolt couldn’t let Serendipity trot all over him and his profession like this. Once the mare finished her spiel, Merlot would have to reply back decisively.

That was, if some unseemly bloke hadn’t waltzed to their blackjack table too. Merlot knew full well who Artificial Harmonic was; a dubiously famous fourth-rate musician specializing in songs for plebeians who didn’t know anything at all about proper dignified music. Bleh... rock music..... it certainly possessed the same “pleasing” sound as real rocks cascading down in an avalanche. Good thing though that Serendipity was already placing the newcomer in his place.

Following the pegasus’s lead, Merlot took a seat on one of the chairs closest to Serendipity as he told the dealer; “And you can deal me in after the lady as well.” Knowing that rebutting the mare would now have to wait a bit, the gentlecolt instead gave Harmonic a questioning look as he swiftly joined his partner in questioning the musician’s presence; “Indeed, most musicians I know of would be making final preparations for their performance right about now.....”

Artificial stared at the two ponies before him, wondering what their initial reaction to him meant. He was used to people acting strangely around him, but he wondered about these two. The gorgeous mare in front of him laughed an adorable laugh, then "corrected" him promptly. Artificial wasn't asking them if they wanted to play blackjack, he was asking if it was alright for him to play with them. He would be kind of put off, but the mare's laugh was just so adorable. He looked to the dealer.

"Deal me in, too."

He then listened as the highly attractive mare asked him why he was out gambling just hours before a show. The unicorn next to him also asked, and Artificial sighed dramatically.

"Well mates, it's been a long day and I figahd that a bit'f relaxation before the show would be fine. I didn't mean t' make anyone particularly upset. I've got a lot'f fans here who would prob'ly like t' see me, after oll, and I can set up a show in not long at'oll. I've been in this bus'ness for a while now. I undahstand how it works quite well."

Jackpot knew when he had the winning hand, both in business and personal life and the look on Trixie's face when she realized that bargaining to go from an amazing deal to an unrealistic one told him he had won this negotiation. he finished his drink as he let her finish, happy to hear that she was going to make her shows worthy of all the funding he had tossed her way. It had been a slight exaggeration regarding how difficult it had been to get the funding for her- he had to talk things over with the board, but they were all his employees, he owned the business, and he owned ALLLL of the business. If he wanted to paint the whole Tops pink with bows he could, despite their complaints. It was good to be king! Especially when one of your favorite performers called you handsome. He couldn't suppress a tiny blush at that, but he kept his composure.

"I'm only like two percent as handsome as you are beautiful, though," He replied awkwardly, silent for a few moments. Well, no, he did not keep his composure. he coughed and regained it.

"As for your performances, that's up to you. Your act, your rules- you could do it solo or request we hire helpers. Of course if we do that we have to pay them, so be mindful of that. But really Trixie, it's your decision. You will have main billing, the only act from the evening on. We were thinking about a warmup act and a cooldown act, but that stretched the budget too much. And you begin tonight, the only night that you follow somepony else- we have Artificial Harmonic who will have a concert, then a small show for you. Sort of a warmup, only a few dozen attendees. We expect upwards of a thousand plus for your average show afterwards, so it's nothing to worry about," he said, finishing his food and drink.

"If you'd like, I could show you your quarters. But in a half-hour I must go see Artificial so we can discuss some things before his show. If you'd follow, I'd be more than pleased to show you your room and all the other amneties at your disposal," he said, getting up and trailing the path with a hoof and a bow.

Trixie was actually taken aback by the Jackpot's flattering compliment about her looks. It was natural, of course, for ponies to admire the exquisite beauty of the Great and Stunning Trixie, but the open adulation from the stallion was most unexpected given they were just negotiating moments before. The comment may have been an attempt at buttering up as part of his own act, something Trixie can relate to and understand. Either way, the flattering words were welcomed, and Trixie gave an alluring, flirtatious look in response,"well one certainly cannot argue that you don't have excellent taste and an eye for beauty! If you think the Great and Exquisite Trixie is most delightful to gaze upon now, what until you see my wondrous feats of magic on stage!"

Trixie quickly stood on her hind legs, her forelegs pointing straight into the air as her cape somehow billowed in the calm air; if that wasn't enough a few small but bright sparks popped in a rainbow of colours around her. It was an easy trick but oh how she loved how it showed her off, and how it usually dazzled whomever she was speaking to.

The azure unicorn came back down on all fours and thought for a second, "well…. Trixie does not require the need for any accomplices, after all she has her loyal admirers in the audience to assist in Trixie's amazing feats of abracadabra! Have no fear!" It wasn't that she really minded having an assistant, but that means less bits for her in this case, and Trixie needed all the bits she could get, but she wasn't going to reveal that fact to Jackpot as it could further undermine her position.

Actually the only part of the deal Trixie didn't care for was having to share the stage, even if she was top billing, but at least it meant she had more time to enjoy the sites in the luxurious resort. Of course first Trixie would enjoy her gracious host desire to lavish her with all kinds of perks as if she was a princess on a royal visit. "Very well good sir, Trixie will allow you to give her the guided tour of your fine establishment; shall we begin?"

Everything was going to be alright!

Serendipity smiled at the musician's words. She gave a warm chuckle.

"Is that so?" she started. "That speaks of real confidence. I like that. What happens, happens. Blow caution to the wind! The only way to truly live." The exuberant mare grinned widely.

"I wasn't sure, but in my book that shows me you're still an artist and not some kind of cute little mechanical windup toy, brought out time and again to entertain crowds of screaming children," Serendipity said with a strong nod.

She gave another laugh and adjusted her shades. "Otherwise it proves you're a simple cocksure fool. Really it all ultimately comes down to how well the stallion performs. Can he back it all up? That's the real question," she said with a smirk as the dealer dealt herself and each of them two cards.

Serendipity smirked. She had a five and an eight: a somewhat precarious hand, given a nine or any face would have her bust. Thirteen wasn't going to win her anything though, not when the dealer's visible card was a jack. For a bold mare like Serendipity, the choice was clear. "Go ahead and hit me, love," she said to the dealer, who presented her with a card. She was happy to see a six. Nineteen. Not blackjack, but not bad either. She wondered how the luck of her companions would compare.
