Cutie Mark: An emerald gemstone shaped as a capped rosette snowflake, which displays her creative prowess and ingenuity.

It wasn’t entirely unexpected that the daughter of a jeweler stallion and a mare famous for stained glass windows would get a cutie mark that related somehow to the creative arts. However, the means by which Flakey Shards earned her mark are a bit more... odd. From a very early age, Flakey possessed a mischievous streak, and an idea hit her one day while watching her father craft gemstones that she could make something roughly as pretty... without actually using a real gem!

And so Miss Shards started work on this project, using knowledge passed down from her mother and other texts on how to make a fake gemstone out of glass. After numerous abortive tries and moments of self-doubt, the crystal filly eventually felt she finally had a product worth showing off; a green-coloured capped rosette gemstone made from stained glass. When it came time for show-and-tell at school, Flakey passed it off as a real emerald gemstone, and her entire class believed her too before she explained how she really made it. Satisfied with how everything turned out, Flakey Shards convinced herself that her creative abilities were genuine and worth further pursuit, thus earning her cutie mark.

History:

Because Flakey Shards is still just a small child, there is nothing much that can be said about her life story so far. Born to two loving parents of the Crystal Empire, the filly has enjoyed the life that most other crystal foals have experienced in her time. Days spending time with friends at school, celebrating at Crystal Fairs, travelling forward in time by a thousand years after enslavement to a Dark Lord... Flakey’s life so far has indeed been very typical in the grand scheme of modern Crystal Imperial history.

Miss Shards doesn’t really know what her future will bring. While her parents couldn’t have asked for a finer apprentice than their daughter (ability-wise at least), Flakey herself doesn’t intend to simply follow blindly in her parents’ hoofsteps when she becomes a full-grown mare. Sometimes though, the filly feels like maybe she oughta’ go and see the world when she grows up; that sounded like fun! It’s not like she wants to spend her entire life in the Crystal Empire... right?

Character Summary:

Flakey Shard’s capacity for mischief is almost near-legendary among those who know or hear of her on a frequent basis. Going beyond the realm of mere pranks, Flakey now dabbles in the field of performing confidence tricks for her own amusement. The filly constantly craves the feelings of having ponies either marvel at her work or getting duped by her... preferably both at the same time. Now that the Crystal Empire is once again part of the wide world of Equestria, Flakey has found for herself new marks; tourists.

Sometime when she has free time on weekends, she sets up a small stall by the train station and sells her artificial gemstones to tourists, claiming that she’s selling genuine gemstones of the Crystal Empire for cheap. She resorts to other tricks too whenever that gig’s not paying off too well; one of her most effective cons is inserting self-made foggy contacts into her eyes and tell the sob story of how she so desperately wants to move to Cloudsdale to pursue her dream of crafting snowflakes, but can’t because she has no wings and so everyone at school makes fun of her for that. Naturally then, she needs “donations” from tourists to afford the expensive magic procedures necessary to get her wings and become one with the snow-producing pegasi. To sell her act, Flakey oftentimes convinces her friends to “bully” her out in public to convince marks that she really is a special tormented “snowflake”.

Normally, such maladaptive behavior would have been stamped out by this point in a filly’s life. Regrettably, Flakey Shard’s parents have turned out to be complete pushovers when it comes to administrating discipline. As a consequence, Flakey thinks that obnoxiously whining and shredding crocodile tears will help her out every time things don’t go her way. It goes without saying that the filly is very much a spoiled brat.

Yet for all her personality flaws, Flakey Shards is overall a half-decent if ill-mannered friend to have. She may have issues when it comes to paying attention in class and doing her work, but she’s up for nearly fun activity not involving reading a book or being a dork. As long as a foal isn’t a blatant killjoy or someone who calls her out too much, Flakey can learn to like anypony. Warning: never beat her in a game, for Miss Shards despises losing to an extraordinary degree.

Many find it saddening that no one seems capable of setting Flakey Shards on the right path, for her gifts as a maker of gemstones and stained-glass are quite evident. Even if most of the time she spend into learning about her creative pursuits are currently used to selfish ends, there is hope yet for the filly. Perhaps once she grows up, Flakey will mature and stop being a manipulative brat... assuming somepony gets the backbone to teach sense into her.
