The Dragon Peaks - Nature's Fury Unleashed

In Equestria’s ancient past, a massive volcano rose up towards the heavens to the north of what is now the Painted Pinto Desert. However, the entire mountain collapsed in a cataclysmic eruption a long time ago, leaving behind only a caldera framed by barren mountains. Nowadays, this smoldering wasteland of rock and ash is now known fittingly as the Dragon Peaks, named for the fact that it has become a favorite domicile of members of the dragon species.

This region is not very forgiving for those unaccustomed to such a primordial environment. Never has the Dragon Peaks been subject to a major eruption in recorded history, but traces of its volcanic past reveal themselves in the form of lava pools, steam vents, geysers, and mudpots. At first glance, nothing green grows in this caldera... but even here, life finds a way. Ponies that look hard enough will find a wide variety of plants and animals especially adapted to thrive in this forsaken landscape.

As for the columns of ash currently billowing from the caldera... those come from no fire. Once or twice a century, dragons migrate from all over the world to assemble on the bleak Dragon Peaks. The reasons to undertake the Great Migration are numerous: proving oneself as a worthy dragon, finding love, discussing matters of great importance to dragonkind, and yes, hibernating within the multitude of caves dotting the slopes of the Dragon Peaks. Not surprisingly, the air is quite hard to breathe as black smoke from multiple snoring giants settles onto the caldera basin.

Those who dwell in the shadow of the Dragon Peaks have the honor of observing everyday one of Mother Nature’s most untamed wonders. Given the inhospitable nature of the caldera though, it’s no wonder that the region hasn’t been properly explored yet. Yet should anypony dare wish to get up close and personal with numerous fearsome dragons, the Dragon Peaks will unquestionably the best place to find these creatures..... at least for the next 25 years or so before the creatures migrate again.
