Pegasi - Citizens of the Clouds

 

 

Since time immemorial, the pegasi of Equestria have fashioned lives of plenty up in the sky above. Gifted with the ability to control the weather, these winged equines are indispensable in preventing the worst ravages of Mother Nature from afflicting the rest of ponykind. Those among this kind who embrace love and friendship in their lives may find that countless other opportunities await them too, as with earth ponies and unicorns.

 

Anatomy-wise, what stands a pegasus apart from other types of ponies are of course, their wings. Thanks to their small pastel-colored bodies, pegasi can outfly all other intelligent creatures who fly in the air, especially griffons and the even larger dragons. Yet aside from their wings, these magnificent ponies share the exact same equine forms as their unicorn and earth pony compatriots; bones, organs, and all. From a curiously glance then, pegasi wings ought to be too small to allow such ponies to be capable of flight.

 

That’s where the innate magic of pegasi comes in. It does far more than give such ponies the capability to fly with technically undersized wings; pegasi magic allows them to interact with water vapor itself. Using this gift, an individual pegasus can make clouds, walk on them as if they were terra firma, and even command a mass of droplets to fall as rain. When working together in groups, pegasi can do even more extraordinary things including directing rainstorms and harvesting massive quantities of water from lakes and oceans.

 

Of course, just because one has aptitude for sky magic doesn't mean one immediately understands how to fly. There have been instances of some pegasi foals experiencing drastic periods of exceptional flying ability, but such incidents always pass once they grow a little older. For a pegasus filly or colt who lives up in the clouds, attendance in flight school is all but mandatory if they don't want to constantly fear dropping out of the clouds. Under careful adult supervision, these children come to learn the basics of flight along with weather control. Even those families who live on the ground strive hard to educate their offspring on flying, even if the parents have to teach this themselves.

 

The good majority of pegasi live in airborne cities such as Cloudsdale and Las Pegasus, for while these winged ponies can live reasonably well on the ground if needed, there’s a certain satisfaction in sleeping on cloud beds and gazing upon the beautiful landscape below. Smaller communities of pegasi live elsewhere throughout Equestria, especially in industrialized cities and settlements that depend on weather teams for local climate management. Typically though, pegasi are rarer the further one travels away from a cloud city.....
