At first it was simply just building blocks but as he grew he began to fashion things out of items found around the house. This caused a mixture of amazement and sometimes anger by his parents after finding that their jewelry or silverware made into something else. To direct his creative nature to something more practical and where he wouldn't destroy anything needed, his father began to show him how use simple tools and techniques like hammering a nail and painting with a brush. The colt was excited to learn and yet he still felt like he wanted to do something more. While returning home from school he saw a pony working near a fire pit. Curiously, the colt watched as the pony heated, pounded and shaped a piece of metal into the metal part of a shovel. Watching something being shaped into something completely new amazed the pony, and upon seeing the colt the stallion offered to show him metal working and blacksmithing. After weeks of practice and learning, Russet Apple showed his parents his creation: a metal watering can. But the biggest surprise was when Russet Apple earned his cutie mark that day.

History - Russet Apple was born in Solstice Heights to a family of apple farming ponies. His mom and dad named him Russet Apple because of how an apple is known to be a russet color when it is brown and green, just as he looked. From a young age his parents taught him the way of farm life hoping that one day he may follow in their hoofsteps. In school Russet was very active in physical things like sports, but he sometimes struggled with subjects like science or history. This wasn't to say that he was bad at school, just that somethings he excelled in than others.

Apart from what he learned in school, Russet learned how to plant, care for, and harvest crops during the seasons. Although he worked hard with these tasks and did so fairly easily, Russet didn't seem to be interested in farming. He kept this disinterest to himself though, fearing that showing how he truly felt would caused his parents to be upset with him and that he would shame the Apple family name. Although not meeting any Apples beyond his family he knew that they were mostly farmers and doing anything else would seem unnatural if Russet chose another path.

It wasn't until he discovered his interest in blacksmithing and receiving his cutie mark, Russet was not afraid to tell his parents what he thought. To his surprise and delight, his parents were fine with him not being a farmer, stating that his talent would be a great help to all who needed it and that no matter what he chose to do in life, his parents still would love him. And so, Russet became an apprentice to the blacksmith continuing to learn his trade. After completing his training, Russet was given a very wonderful gift, the chance to own the blacksmith shop he trained in. The previous owner and his teacher was getting old and sought somepony that he would pass the business over to. Russet appeared to be fortunate enough to be at the right place at the right time.

Russet said goodbye to his parents and moved into the home that adjoined the shop knowing that if he ever needed help his parents were a short trot away. He now seeks to begin his life as a blacksmith, hoping for success and a chance to meet new ponies in the process.

Character Summary - Russet is a fairly easy going young stallion, one who doesn't let the little upsets in life stress him out. He also isn't one to rush, preferring to take his time with projects to make sure they are right. He is by no means lazy as he is a very hard worker. Russet is also very intelligent, especially when it comes to building things, picturing angles and slopes as he creates without much need for plans. He is one to be a perfectionist in his work and will work tirelessly until he gets the job done a certain way. This lends to a certain stubbornness about him, one that he knows of but does little to correct. He also is a pony that does not wish to be a burden upon, preferring to help rather than be helped. Asking for and accepting assistance is a struggle that he battles with, often biting off more than he can chew. As part of his perfectionist nature, Russet does try to keep his workshop well organized and prefers if no pony handles his tools or materials. All of these flaws are ones that he is trying to correct to handle his life with less burden and less need for control.

Edit: 3/11 - Updated Russet's appearance slightly.
