“All rise!” Like clockwork, the solemn royal guard serving as the court bailiff shouted at 10AM to announce the arrival of the Judge into the courtroom. “Canterlot Superior Court is now in session. Judge Swift Justice presiding.” As usual, the courtroom conveyed a solemn majesty of its own with its sturdy judge’s bench, alabaster walls, and high ceiling. Each litigant would present their case to the Judge, with an audience looking on from the gallery in the back of the room.

“You may be seated,” declared Swift Justice as she sat down in her chair, ready to take on the first case of the day. Presiding over small claims cases was not exactly her primary responsibility, but with the high amount of such lawsuits overwhelming the judicial system lately, more judges were needed to handle them. Swift Justice would give this trail the same cold professionalism she brought to everything else. “The case before us today involves the loss of raw gemstones, and consequently of profits unable to be obtained as a result. The plaintiff, Albina Elena Greywing, asserts that she should be awarded compensation for her losses. The defendant, Kalime, believes otherwise.”

“Are both sides ready to present their arguments?”

Note to any spectator: any who act inappropriately in the courtroom WILL be thrown out of the courtroom and the thread.

"I am, your Honor." Albina Elena Greywing, business owner and griffoness of Rockwington, responded in a calm tone, standing tall before Judge Swift Justice with a well-groomed mauve coat and feathers, freshly re-dyed ears, and a selection of silver jewelry including earrings, a bracelet, and a subdued silver necklace that all provided a pleasant contrast to her natural colors. She looked every bit the dedicated business-griffon she felt like.

She had arrived at Canterlot nearly a week prior to today's hearing, having departed immediately after receiving notice of the court date with her travel-cart packed full of goods and items she could sell along the 200-or-so-mile journey to the the capital of Equestria. Having dual-citizenship could be both a pain and a blessing for a griffon like herself, but she was fortunate enough to have made a nice profit during the long trip. Nevertheless, that profit was nowhere near enough to undo the damage to Elena's business and associates.

The problem had been simple, yet extraordinarily troublesome. A single bulk shipment of raw materials from one of her Diamond Dog colleagues had failed to arrive, causing a painful (and no doubt to the any economist, hilarious) chain reaction that had culminated in a loss of profits across the board, a degradation in trust from her business partners, and even a few high-profile customers taking their business elsewhere; all for the simple fact that Elena and her web of allies weren't able to provide the goods that they had been dependably producing for years now, due to a lack of resources. To say she had been a little uneasy during the initial crisis was an understatement. Even now, after stopgap measures were in place and business was more or less back to normal, she was nervous about the stability of her operation.

In hindsight, perhaps I should have had a better back-up plan. Depending on one group for all of our resources was a bit foolish. Elena mused, shaking her head softly in self-reproach; much of the domino effect that had ravaged her business could have been avoided if she had planned better, and she blamed herself heavily for the damage to her reputation. Nonetheless, the deed was done, the error was made, and now she was in court trying to salvage something from the situation.

Without turning her head away from the Judge, the griffoness glanced at the Diamond Dog she held responsible for the failed shipment, her amber eyes meeting Kalime's own with a cool expression. She liked this girl and her upbeat attitude- one of the multiple reasons she made her camp their primary source of gemstones- but this was her business: her craft and indeed, her life. Her own failure aside, it was the ordered- and indeed paid for- materials not arriving that sparked the problems. To put it bluntly, Kalime had messed up before Elena had in her mind, and the griffoness was not going to go without reparations.
