Unique Traits:

Luna has some unique traits that help her perform duties required during the nights - examples of those known below:

Night Time management:

As the Princess of the night, Luna is generally credited with being the one who puts the stars in the sky and raises the very moon itself at a whim. She has never stated outright stated in public how the night itself is managed, but she has cryptically commented that it is much like 'painting a unique piece, every night, on an infinite canvas of sky'

Dreamwalking:

It has long been rumored that the princess wields the ability to step into the dreams of the troubled and anxious, in order to help dispel their nightmares and assist them in putting that which disturbs their restful sleep at ease. She has been seen many a time in the dreams of both young and old, a symbol and beacon of hope when dreams turn to nightmares.

Additional: She has been known to communicate with varying other creatures on occasion, such as manticores.

History:

Princess Luna is one of the two ruling sisters in the nation of Equestria, and as such has a rather steep part in it's history such as the establishment of peace between Equestria and the Griffons, and the discovery of the Zebra colonies living within the everfree forest.

There are also many other events that she has played a part in, some of these are detailed here in brief, both recent and past.

Cutie mark:

As a young alicorn, she and her sister were both given guidance by many of Equestrias wisest and respected unicorns - during this period of time, it was Unicorns who were required to control the sun and the moon. During a particularly troubling time where the unicorns available were all but drained of their magic, the young Alicorn Princesses willingly took responsibility of this ultimately daunting task.

At the same time her sister was raising the sun to bring on the new day, Luna found herself prompted to lower the moon despite having never been taught such a powerful magic before. Upon successfully completing this task in duality with her sister, Luna's cutie mark appeared over a darkened patch of coat, a crescent moon which looked to be suspended in a perfect night sky - truly securing herself the title of Princess of Equestria's night!

Assuming her role - responsibilities of a Nighttime Princess

In her role of Princess, Luna actively assisted her sister Celestia in the banishment of King Sombra from the crystal empire, the entrapment of Discord in stone and the capturing of Tirek over 1000 years ago - upholding her dedication to the wellbeing and safety of Equestria during the night is a part of her royal duties as Princess to assist in bringing peace and tranquility to the kingdom.

However, she does not profess to having a truly clean record with regard to the Nightmare Moon incident during her personal 'darker times'.

Nightmare Moon:

A thousand years ago, jealousy and envy corrupted Luna, creating for her an alternate persona known as Nightmare Moon, and deemed a night that would last forever, triggering a dramatic battle between herself and Celestia that threatened to topple Equestria into infinite darkness. It took the use of the 6 elements of harmony, wielded by Celestia, to finally put Nightmare Moon into a deep stasis-like banishment within the moon - It then took the 6 Ponyvillian mares, the current bearers of the elements, to dispel the evil forces within Nightmare Moon upon her vengeance-fuelled return to Equestria 1000 years later. Upon their successful triumph over the forces of Nightmare Moon, Luna was returned to normal - although it would be some time before her full Alicorn power was restored

The incident may have been a product of circumstances from a thousand years ago, but it serves as a personal reminder for Luna to keep her more emotional sides in check. However, despite this part of her past, she doesn't dwell on the incident as a source of guilt - as a matter of fact, she has come to the understanding that her past isn't a perfect patchwork quilt and still requires work to create and maintain a more positive public image to dissuade ponies fears that such an event might happen again.

Redemption and Reflection: The events of 'Nightmare Night'

During her recovery from the Nightmare Moon incident, Luna attempted to make amends with Equestria as a whole, the more known of the places she visited being Ponyville -This visit proved eventful for a variety of reasons. One particularly overexcitable mare made it rather difficult for Luna's attempts to make amends, instead choosing to provoke chaos around the Princess via various antics that only served to annoy and aggrevate Luna over the course of the evening into a state of anger - forcing the princess to, in an illadvised move, declare the entire celebration of Nightmare Night {An event devised as a tribute/reminder of the events surrounding Nightmare moon} cancelled.

It took those same ponies whom had wielded the elements of harmony against her to talk her back down into a state of calm, and other ponies who displayed an unwavering admiration of Luna to show that there was still a place for her within the hearts of Equestrian Ponies everywhere.

With a new understanding of the events going on around her, she reinstated nightmare night and celebrated with the ponies of Ponyville.

Current day:

Luna has been settling into her destined nighttime role, establishing herself as a focused part of the day/night cycle of Equestria, and is more often seen active during the night than she would be during the day. In her current role, she assists Celestia with important political meetings and establishing friendly relations with other Nations beyond Equestria, ensuring that the peace that has been a part of the last 1000 or so years is maintained - the challenges are always present and clear, but her resolve to stay facing them without hesitation has only strengthened over time.

With the demons of her past seemingly gone, she is looking toward the future to simply be more fondly remembered amongst the citizens of Equestria!

Character Summary:

The younger sister of Princess Celestia, Princess Luna is a majestically hued mare, swathed in a variety of blue shades, mane flowing with ethereal glowing sparkles and swirls that eerily resemble the night sky. She is Equestrias esteemed and beloved Princess of the night, and is truly as equally mysterious in her nature as she is in her appearance. The return from the clutches of her personal demons, under the influences of the jealousy-fuelled 'persona' of Nightmare Moon has been somewhat succesful, but the full rehabilitation of the ex mare in the moon, in the eyes of the world at large, has been one of slow and careful progress.

As important as her sunjects are to her, nopony is nearer or dearer to Princess Luna than her own sister, whom she respects most dearly and maintains a close kinship with Celestia. Sharing a close sisterly bond, she shares her thoughts on matters both political and not so much, often having differing ideas on subjects and situations, even whilst respecting her sisters points of view..

She is generally approachable when calm but can be excitable with her mood on occasion, which might stir some archaic 'Equestrian' tongue in bursts - her banishment having resulted in something of a language and culture gap that she is currently doing her best to catch up with. Luna has also developed a more 'honest' approach with ponies in an effort to avoid keeping such things bottled up...which can be met with mixed results - she hasn't had experience enough in modern social situations and thus might come across a little more bluntly than she might intend. However, she is not afraid to put somepony in their place if they deserve it, regardless of who they are or their social status!

Her most prominant wish is to simply to restore belief and confidence in her as a co-ruler, and to once again prove her place fully in the eyes of Equestria as one who tends to the very night itself - and of all duties that entails!.

~Likes~

Talking with her sister, the night, Appreciation - and NightMare Night {once she realised it's true value as a celebration!}

~Dislikes~

Ignorance, being disturbed whilst working, ponies who are disingenous and dishonest towards her and those she cares about.
