Roleplay Type: World of Equestria

Name: Frostlace

Sex: Female

Age: Mare

Species: Unicorn

Eye colour: Ice blue ringed with pale yellow.

Coat: Like most ponies born to the Hoar Witch family, Frostlace’s coat is a stark, snowy white that’s soft as down and grows long and wavy around her fetlocks.

Mane/Tail: The same bright white as her coat, though there are thin streaks of pale yellow throughout. Both her mane and tail are extremely thick and almost excessively long, enough so that it’s always been a running joke in her house that her hair weighs more than she does! Whether messily tied back or allowed to hang loose, her hair tumbles in an artful mixture of gentle waves and curls.

Physique: Very feminine and curvaceous with toned legs that hint at an athletic nature.

Residence: Chenya district of Stalliongrad.

Frostlace lives in and runs the Hoar Witch Estates, her old family home built upon grounds owned by her family as far back as the discovery of Stalliongrad.

Occupation: Master of the Hoar Witch Estates. With this title comes the responsibility of overseeing all of her family’s business enterprises: one steel production company, one ship construction company, one hospital, one private magic school for young unicorns, two artisanal cheese shops, one publication company that focuses in nonfiction, and a small vineyard that produces ice wines as well a small distillery for making specialized whiskeys in ice wine casks. The latter two operations are actually located on the grounds of her Estate!

Cutie Mark: A burst of golden light.

From her earliest memories, the only parent Frostlace had ever known was her grandfather. While this isn’t such a rare thing in Equestria, it was a bit of an oddity for the magical young foal, for her grandfather himself was an oddity. Frostlace, you see, was the only daughter and heir to the Hoar Witch family, an old unicorn family descended from a historial unicorn warrior whose speciality in ice magic had earned her the title of the Hoar Witch. And Frost’s dedushka? He was a commoner, a steelworker who had married into the family!

It had been an absolute scandal when the rough-around-the-edges stallion had married into the old, respected family. The daughter he had wooed had been a very eligible bachelorette for many years, and many other older families and newer, opportunistic ones had tried for all of those years to have a son or daughter capture her heart. All attempts had failed, however, and the only stallion to captivate Frostlace’s stunning babushka was the hulking, grubby, bearded steelworking earth pony from the poorest of Stalliongrad’s poor.

And that grubby stallion taught Frostlace many of life’s most valuable lessons, just as he had taught her father. She learned an affinity for gardening and all things that grow, for working hard and never expecting to be waited on. She learned to love boldly and freely all ponies and creatures from all walks of life, to eat all that was on her plate, to laugh loudly, to give generously, to share all of life’s joys, and to bring light into the lives of those around her without fail. Above wealth, above status, above etiquette, above everything a filly of high society was meant to value – Frostlace valued and cherished her dedushka’s lessons most of all.

It was when she lost her grandfather that Frostlace received her cutie mark. She was feeling terribly sad and alone in a very big and empty house at first, unwilling to see any of the house staff and be subjected to their pity. She locked herself in her room and flipped through old family photo albums. There were some older pictures of her parents and grandparents, and more recent pictures from her own life. With every page she turned, Frost found her tears drying and her smile widening, for in every photo her dedushka was beaming – and what an infectious smile it was! All at once she realized just how bright a light her grandfather had brought into her family and continued to bring to her. The happinesss he had given her was one she wished to share with the rest of the world, and the moment that thought struck her, Frost’s cutie mark appeared! It is a mark she is quite proud of, and she sees herself as now carrying a piece of her dedushka wherever she goes.

History: Frostlace spent her entire childhood at lessons. Well, not every moment of her childhood, though that is what it felt like! Most of her early life was spent being shuffled from her family’s private magic school to private lessons at home, to on-site lessons about her family’s many businesses from her dedushka. A pony of her status is expected to hold a certain level of education, and she would not be the exception. It was one of the things her grandfather was always very firm about, for he understood that having a commoner for a grandfather and primary caretaker acted as an automatic mark against her reputation amongst Stalliongrad’s aristocracy. He instilled quirks in her that were very out of place amongst the social elite, and no matter how respected her family or how prim and proper her behaviour in public, those “eccentricities” would always be looked down upon. And so, the rest of her reputation would have to remain pristine and intact, and that meant lessons.

It also meant parties. Social gatherings. Asking the right questions, giving the right answers and always behaving exactly as she was expected to behave. For many years, it worked. Even after she had lost her grandfather it worked, since the distant cousin who (eagerly) moved into the estate to care for her was just as concerned about Frost’s reputation as her dedushka had been.

Once Frostlace had come of age and taken over as Master of the HW Estates, however, she was almost instantaneously branded an eccentric. She played her part very well at parties, said all the right things, ran her many businesses well, but the problem lay in her apparent antisocial nature and her downright eagerness for hard work. For example, whenever she would visit her steel production facilities to speak with its president, Frost would also insist upon doing a full shift of manual labour. She would learn, intimately, the work her labourers were doing to keep things going and walk away sooty, sweating, and smiling.

She did this as often as she could at every business she owned, always smiling and sweating and getting to know every pony who worked for her. Indeed, she seemed more concerned with getting to know the grubbiest, most common ponies who worked for her than building connections with respected ponies of status. It was absolutely unheard of behaviour.

It didn’t help, either, that for a good few years she stopped attending social functions altogether. Every free moment she had she would spend at home on her Estates, helping the old gaffer care for the gardens and the vineyards, letting her white coat get terribly muddy and dusty. Only in recent years has she begun to show her face at different events and parties in Stalliongrad and beyond, and even then she would only make an appearance at those events where it was most important to be seen, so she could stay the accusations of her being antisocial. It wasn’t a very convincing effort. She could only ever be expected to stay the appropriate length of time at a party was if she were hosting it.

The tittering of bored socialites hardly bothered her, however, and Frost has been keeping busy. For the past three years in Stalliongrad she has hired an elite team of builders, sculptors, and unicorns who excel in ice-based magic to assist with the construction of a massive ice hotel to be opened in the coldest months of Stalliongrad’s winters. The hotel is a grand and novel thing, and has succeeded in bringing numerous tourists (and their business) to Stalliongrad during its most barren season.

If only for her dedushka’s memory, Frostlace genuinely does want to improve upon her homebody nature. And she has been working on it. Just…not that hard. This year, at least, she will be throwing a ball in the grand hall of her ice hotel upon its opening – no doubt those of status would love that, and perhaps it would stay their flapping gums if only for a little while!

Character Summary: Frostlace is something of an odd cookie to most ponies from the old families of Stalliongrad. She hates parties, rarely dolls up, loves working up a good sweat, and loves spending time among common folk. She takes her joy in the small things and hasn’t made an expensive purchase for no reason even once in her life. She can’t stomach extravagance or indulgence, keeps the gates and doors of her estate open to travelers, lost souls, or anypony who simply needs a retreat, and she enjoys a hearty bowl of soup more than the most expensive sparkling wines. Appearances aside, she is the very spit of her dedushka. Especially in matters of love! The mare refuses to marry for advantage in status or wealth, and hopes that she can be as lucky as her late babushka and find somepony she zings with. She actually has a bit of a reputation for flatly rejecting any suitor who doesn’t at least try to be subtle about wanting her money or rank – and she can even be rude about it!

That said, all rumours of her being “antisocial” have come into existence only because she is a rare face to see where arisocrats gather. In regards to high society, she truly can be antisocial, but Frostlace is a very amiable and friendly unicorn by nature. Even those who accuse her of being unfriendly will begrudgingly admit that she is a very pleasant conversationalist despite the odd places she can bring a casual chat. And truth be told, her prickly nature towards the high society she was born into isn’t completely unfounded. After all, the most important pony to have ever been in Frost’s life was born a commoner and always looked down upon by the world he married into. Her dedushka was seen as lessening the quality of her family name, and it was something that succeeded in boiling the unicorn’s blood every time she thought of it. An outspoken few ponies from old families had given Frostlace a hard time about this fact when she was younger, tasking her with rising above the bad name her family had received. Because of this, the mare is convinced that all “well bred” ponies look down on her lineage. It’s something she’s quite stubborn about.

Frost is also a very prideful individual. She is especially proud of her homeland: an industrious corner in the barren reaches of the world, where many folk come together to prosper. The snow, the cold, the smog, the steel – all of these things are precious to the unicorn. Especially the snow! After all, what could be better than a snowball fight, or building a snowpony? It’s very hard not to love the snow when one specializes in ice and frost spells, after all. Frost has a knack for basic kinetic spells as well, and arcane theory is something she loves to read about (though she’ll typically devour any books placed in front of her). She also loves fencing and dancing, tilling soil, working steel, eating, drinking, and learning as often as she can. And while she has many different hobbies that she is passionate about, her true skills rest in her work, with her greatest expertise resting in the making of spirits.
