Will Season 6 be the last? (Discuss I guess?)

Recommended Posts

This almost seems like a thread VGAddict would make. Anyway...

I'm not sure how many of you guys are like me and visit multiple MLP: FiM forums, but, I do. 5 specifically. I also check Equestria Daily pretty much daily.

What I've seen recently is... well...

I've seen a lot of sentiment lately that due to the way the show is currently being treated by Discovery Family, the way-to-many hiatuses, and the fact that the ratings this season have been less than what they used to be...

That it may not get past Season 6, making Season 6 the last.

Keep in mind I'm just repeating what I've seen on other MLP: FiM boards and Equestria Daily comments. There's nothing to prove or disprove this.

When you think about it though, I guess all shows do have to come to an end eventually.

It might be better if Season 6 is the last season with the 2017 movie possibly acting as a "series finale."

Besides, I don't want this show, which has some pretty AMAZING moments, to become drawn out like other shows like Spongebob, Fairly Odd Parents, etc.

That's just me though I suppose.

What do all of you guys think?

Will Season 6 be the last MLP: FiM season?

They are contracted further. Beyond that- as long as it remains a franchise that Hasbro sees use in providing funds for development of further episodes, the show will continue even if it eventually ends up on a new channel.

People who say those things so often do so without a full understanding of the facts.

MLP:FIM is and remains one of Hasbro's biggest cash cows at the moment. It is in their every interest to prolong the series which is at its core going as long as they are able to. It's still selling them toys.

The ratings are lower, yes, but even with the ratings where they are it's Discovery Family's biggest hit (compare the ratings to the numbers from another of their kids shows--you'll find it's notable higher than any of them). It is in their best interest to keep it going as an anchor for their children's line up. The bigger danger here, I think is the network itself falling apart, but I do not think it would be hard for Hasbro to find another network to takeit.

It's also likely the ratings reflect an increasing shifting of audiences to other, online mediums (both legal and not) and do not necessarily reflect a waning interest in the brand.

A kids cartoon, especially one with such a heavy merchandising component to it, is very unlikely to end after a theatrical film based on it is released. Even if the film is only so successful, it's in Hasbro's interest to capitalize on whatever new brand it attracts.

Absolutely nothing tells me we're in any danger of the show ending any time soon.

It's a valid concern. I think the question is "When is a good time to let it go?" Do we really want FiM ending up like, say, the Simpsons? That's been on an oxygen tank for decades.

As of right now there are over a hundred episodes, all of them watchable in retrospect, with more on the way + a movie + comics. I actually stopped following the comics because there is just too much to follow there. I'd say we're still in good shape as far as new content coming out. If anything, I bet we'll get another spinoff series or two, especially if they embrace new toy brands.

I guess when it comes right down to it, we'll just have to wait and see.

Personally, for me though, I haven't liked the way Discovery Family has been treating the show so I think it should go to another channel.

If that will actually happen, and what channel it should go to, is not something we'll know until this is announced, if it is announced at all.

The number one thing one must remember in a question/discussion like this is that we are far from knowing all the factors that go into the cancelling of a tv show cartoon. I often read comments where people tie the success and/or failure of brony conventions as a sign of the times and a representation that the fandom is dying, and worse, that the show is going to be cancelled soon. Don't let yourself fall into a emotional trap where you are thinking things that you should only be feeling. I know season 3 was bittersweet for a lot of us, in fact several people lost interest altogether. But we are kidding ourselves if we think that the number of interested bronies that make internet comments have any real affect on the longevity of the show. The only real affect we as fans have made on the show, is the way the show is made by DHX, its writers, its animators, etc. The people who approve of more seasons for a show like MLPFiM are not acknowledging reaction to the transition to Discovery Family as a determinant of whether or not they should continue to green light more seasons.

The main thing we should be scared of is the way cartoons are normally syndicated. MLPFiM is not a prime time drama. A prime time drama television show on network television is completely dependent on the ratings it receives during premiered episodes. If it under-performs, it gets axed. Cartoons for younger audience pools are different. When we were little kids, we would be lying if we didn't enjoy watching constant reruns of the shows we enjoyed. Because of the way kids watch television in the afternoon and Saturday mornings, it wouldn't be quite a bad thing for a company to cancel a production of a cartoon show but continue to air the same two seasons of episodes over and over until the show is too old and its viewers lose interest. We should be glad that Hasbro decided that MLPFiM was a better cartoon that deserved several seasons beyond the minimum required for syndication (65 episodes). In fact, 65 episodes was probably originally the plan, and why season three was shorter. But because of the show doing such a good job expanding its brand to its demographic (not just internet bronies), the continuation of more seasons of the show have unrolled.

For consideration, I would suggest even if season 6 WAS the last season of MLPFiM, we would eventually seen new pony stuff in different forms of media soon after. I'm not sure what that would be, weather it be a movie universe, or a spin-off show, or possibly video game (imagine what hasbro could do with a medium like Skylanders or Disney's Infinity.). The threat that the show will end is real, and it's inevitable. But to suggest they would just put a stamp on generation 4 and say to themselves, "Meh, that's enough pony for now, let's quit doing this successful thing we're doing" would be pretty stupid.

That was a good read River. I think the bigger danger here is they try to make FiM "evolve" in some way, or try moving it to a different medium (like 3D rendered) that would far and away take pony away from the style we know and cherish as fans.

You know, darling, even if Hasbro would axe the show right here and now, I doubt it would, you know, affect the fandom all that much. There'd be a couple days of rage, tears, death threats, petitions, begging, as well as cheer, relief and excitement in a distance, but after that people would realize that actually.... not much have changed.

We already have a lot of fan-made content, everything from massive and well-done comics to Fanfics, to videos, to games. The fandom will slowly die off, yes, but it will be a long time AFTER the show ends.

I can seriously see them trying to retire the M6 eventually and reaplace them with the current foals (possibly with the no-longer-children) CMC taking the spotligh. I can think of so many ways it would be awesome, and so many ways it could completely destroy the series...

I used to despise 3D ponies, but honestly after some (well a lot) of watching videos on yourtube made with SFM, they've kinda grown on me...

Not to sound rude or anything, but I hope it ends at season 6. I love the show, but anything more is just way too much. I'm worried the show might hit seasonal rot if it goes over 6 seasons.

I would love if there was a spinoff with the CMC since I like them so much. Although I think I'd prefer the spinoff to just be flash animated with a slightly different style than FiM instead of 3D.

Maybe it's just me, but honestly I wish it had ended last season. The massive finale witht he battle with tirek would have been a perfect high-note to end it on. As much as I like some parts of the current season (Dash's Villian Song especially) I just cant seem to get into it like I did the past seasons...

Yeah, dont get me wrong, I dont *mind* the 3D but I prefer the current style (and so good to see another CMC fan! It seems a larger and larger portion of the fandom cant stand the CMC!)

I'm still working on season one of the show, as I'm new to this fandom, but I still feel like I need to put my hoof into this.

I feel that if Hasbro knows what they have on their hands and are careful with it, it'll be okay until they feel like they can let FiM go.

I just hope it doesn't turn out like Spongebob where it turns bad just because the people working on it don't care anymore.

I still like "The Simpsons"...
