S.S.D recon (private)

Dude heard blackwing's reaction and saw midnight's. He winced a bit feeling like a jerk for bringing up the pain.

Doc was about to say something when he observes  the spots in the road "got something guys!" He said loudly wanting to point out the clue "target indicator! Everyone take a look." Dude came by the spot doc pointed out and instantly knew what it was. "Ahhh dip spit! Wintergreen still wet and fresh. Good job doc."  Doc looks to his partners feeling like he needed to explain.

"ok; you ever see a cartoon or a tv show where there are country hicks? And there constantly spitting outside on the porch or in a spitoon? That's dip tobacco. It's real and its really popular in the military's around the world. Unlike a cigarette you can do it anywhere, without smoke or a lighter.  You just pull some out of a can stick it between your jaws and lip and spit out the saliva that touches it."

dude smiles and pokes the dark minty spit with a gloved hand and smells it. "Dirty habits like, this, leaving trash or making noise are going to be great clues for us to follow and track down our enemies. This is proabably  isn't even a few hours old.  So we're on the right road. We just need to catch up and find them. "

Well, she was correct in assuming the trainees were in the mountains. After all, the dip spit proved it if nothing else. Which was, good, and bad. It was good so they didn't have to waste energy hiking down the mountain, BUT it was bad because there wasn't a ton of places to hide if they accidentally ran into the recruits unprepared. But she also found herself critical. Such a sloppy mistake would get people killed, in a proper warzone, she knew a certain intel officer who could use that one bit of information to predict the direction and objective and squads. Midnight hoped she'd never meet that officer again, it carried a lot of baggage in of itself.

"Targets are in the route above us....continuing" she systemically. She was no longer a giddy young girl who loved her novels. She was a cold calculated sniper, who was trained to perfect the art of murder.

Well... at least they were on the right track. Black still felt guilty about how that last mission had been played out. He was so used to being in charge, but not really needing to plan. In his team, he had mainly been a unit leader, but not the planner. And now he was shoved right back in the shoes he knew he would fail in. He kept quiet, not wanting to really draw anymore attention to himself, instead just giving a nod to his team. The path ahead might be long, and with little cover. But it was a practise mission... what could go wrong?

Doc nodded understanding blacking wanted to be kept on the path. He disagreed but it would be better for keeping track. if they took a shortcut they might overshoot them and wind up ahead of them.

dude spoke up again "ok when we find the grunts: we report on them. we find out how many there are, what type of equipment. and most importantly where there going. if were lucky maybe we can eleven call in a fake mortar strike on them ... that @#$$ them off. haha" he laughed silently.

doc smiled; he felt bad about essentially trolling his own guys. but still it was a pretty accurate idea of what we would be doing in the field. locating the enemy and there objectives. if recon guys are lucky they don't have to engage. they either use airstrikes, mortars, or call in the infantry to help them wipe out there units. still they were bound to get into plenty go fights. and that seemed to be where his 2 new teammates seemed to excel.

the trail ahead was clean expect for more patches of spit. the ground was to hard to get accurate tracks from.  he assumed they were traveling in two columns one on each side of the rode.

but now it was time for another trivia question from dude. "ok you two what are we going to do when we find them? how will we move and how will we observe them?"

The tracking of the recruits was going well, while boot marks were hard to read, she could simply follow the spit. And lacking that, there were enough marks on the ground to get a feel for direction, just no numbers.

Midnight perked up hearing the next question. "I can observe them easily" she said, as if making a statement "If I can get a clear line of sight on them, preferably from a vantage point, I can get a read on everything they have" she informed the rest of her team. Oh the wonderful joys of a sniper rifle and its scope. She could see everything, and her enemies...well, only a few had ever shot back at her.

"very good midnight. observation and stealth are key. if we can do it at a distance then its like cheating; but this is war theres no cheating" says chill as he walks along. doc wipes some sweat off his forehead, this place is warm. "except the geneva convention, and the rules of engagement" doc says with a smile as a joke "the whaaa?" dude asks legitimately confused.

they make it up further. the road serpentining to make the road less steep. dude calls for a halt. "ok were doing good. this is going to suck but i want to practice breaking trail. half the time were going to be off the road and its good to practice. Blackwing! when cutting thru thick jungle you gotta try to do your best to slip thru. If you have to cut stuff down; then well you have to cut, nothing we can do. the point is to pretend someone is behind us and imagine there tracking us. if i cut this it will look just like a branch fell. i can climb over this. have that attitude. get us to the top of that hill." he points straight forward. "ill be helping you using my compass" he pulls one out "but i want you to practice."

doc nods "standard land nav," he tells Blackwing "pick a point and move up to it. keep a pace count. when you reach your point pick another and move on. in the jungle we have lots of cover so we can do more direct routes. but still keep a random pattern so were not always moving in a predicable straight line." doc moves up to the thicket. he puts some gloves on and pulls the throne bushes apart. "go on ill cover ... yah this is gonna suck." dude nods "yeah but no one is going to be looking for us in the thick. also it makes great cover for an ambush!"

Black felt like a weak link, at least in this situation. He was best in the heat of a fight, or at least inside a enemy area in which he had people to take out or keep safe, but this moving around felt strange to him. He had done his fair share of it, but rarely as a lead. He listened to Midnight answer the question from Chill, Black having decided to just stay quiet for now.

Then, came the order to break trail...

Black looked over, noticing the bushes they had to go through, and he thanked that the clothes were tearish proof. He nodded, entering the forest. He chose a tree as his first point, moving up to it, before choosing another. Every three tree's he paused and listened, hoping he was doing okay.

Midnight wasn't a fan of the next part, moving without being tracked. While she herself was light, her rifle and bag weren't so moving without leaving sighs she'd been there were, a struggle for the sniper. But she tried her best, but very now and again her rifle would hit a tree, or her bag would rustle a bush. It was slow, and she didn't mind slow, after all, she was one who waited for her targets. But moving with all this equipment as well as trying to do it through the trees without leaving a mark, the sniper was happy to admit, wasn't her happest hour.

"ok ... stop ...stop ... stop. everyone circle up." said dude doc stopped and rolled over a bush to get closer to the dude. "what's the orders?"  dude looked to his team "ok; for your first time; your doing good. stay alert. but remember were all following you. be a bit more conscious of the fact that were falling you. doc, do you have some bandages we can use for padding midnights rifle?" doc nods and pulls out an ace wrap handing it to her " here just wrap up your rifle, cover the metal bits so if it smacks something again it will muffle the sound."

dude nods "good, now when we get to the top. blackwing pick us a spot for the hindsight. we drop packs and move in light to find the grunts. sound good?" doc nods. they were bound to be close. and while dropping the packs wasn't needed, it was what they would do if it were a real mission. "Blacking; when we get on top. pick a spot your comfortable with. something like a ditch or a dip in elevation we can easily set up"

She knew she wasn't the most agile, but having to bandage her rifle because of the noise she was making frustrated her deeply. She did as she needed to, but she didn't have to like the drill. First it was nearly drowning her, now making her hike through this? Part of her missed her old missions, where it was much simpliar. Point, kill, move. She nodded her head though, she needed to learn, one way, or another.

  • 2 weeks later...

More pressure.... great.

Blackwing kept it to himself, not letting anything slip. He was a little worried if he let them down, though he was planning to do his best. He nods as they get the orders, well, training instructions, from Chill. He waits for Midnight's rifle to get wrapped before he starts moving again, actively trying to chose a path that had a little more room for the poor girl.

As he got to a point where he could see more light, he checked around for a spot, noticing a bush with a shade overhead that was dug out a little, from what had seemed like a mudslide, or something like it.

"This good?"

Dude stepped forward. he had a surprising amount of spry in his step as if the heavy pack was nothing to him, he came next to Blackwing. and walked around the site, judging it. He stuck his head under the tree and came out the other side. "good choice! alright lets drop our packs and do some surveillance!"

doc stood next to midnight and took a sip from his camel pack. the big green doctor bent over and offered midnight a sip as he came over and sat down stripping off the large pack but kept his med bag on.

Dude went into his pack and pulled out some came netting, dropping it over the tree making a little tent. then he took his bag off. "ok, midnight your up," he pulled a spotter scope out of his bag and took the covers off. we look for clues, rest our legs, and plan our next movement."

Midnight caught up to the front pair, and dumped her bag onto the ground more than happily. She couldn't stand the damned thing! She glanced over at doc and shook her head. She'd live, but was thankful for it. But at the end of the day, she needed to stand on her own two feet.

Although, the sniper seemed to perk up when it became her turn to step up. She swung her 50 cal up, and despite that fact she knew she couldn't pull the trigger, she couldn't not love it. The rifle in her hands was her baby, and nothing, not heaven nor hell, would stand between her and it. She moved to near an edge, lied down, and, outside of her scope, looked around. While she Could have looked through her scope, she had nothing to work with. Using a wider field of range, she could see more, then use her scope once she spotted something worth noting. She took a deep breath, and moved all though away. She had to concentrate, and wait. This was her domain, and she ruled it.

doc sits on his back and beckons blacking over. "ok not bad back there, your learning fast. its one of those things you get better at with practice. this next moment is probably going to more your style. as were probably going to be moving towards the enemy. treat it like an ambush. make sure your moments are stealthy, make shorter moves between each cover. move to a piece of cover, get your bearings, search around, then move on. you won't have to zig zag, as much. because we have an objective and art as worried about them spotting us. any questions?" he asked taking a sip of water.

chill lays down with midnight with his spotting scope, he pulls out a tiny iPod looking thing. "low winds, adjust potential shots 17 degrees. high moisture, compensate 20 degrees. ok midnight show me what you got.

from the top of the mountain they could see camp promenade and the road. to the left was a vally and a river but to the right was some thick brush that evened out to a forrest. "if i were them i would stay in that forrest. its not so thick that they would get stuck and the trees would make good cover."

Midnight either didn't notice Chill, or just didn't react to him. She was staring out, her eyes looking at nothing in particular, but rather, the entire landscape that scretched out before her. One mistake, taht's all they needed to make, then she'd find them and get scope. And once she found her target.....

"Found them" she muttered under her breath, shouldering her rifle and looking down her scope. She'd spotted something moving, a slight shift in the upper branches of a large tree. While ordinary, there hadn't been much wind and the fact that only a single tree shifted, meant she had to look. Taking aim, she quickly spotted a marine who was using the tree for cover, and occasionally lobbying what appeared to be stones up at it. She directed Chills scope towards where shehad spotted them.

"If I was to guess, he's either on guard duty or snuck away, but the main location is there. Hell, I could take a pot shot at him if you'd like"

Wow, he had actually done something right this time. He couldn't help but let out a breath of relief as he let the bag off his back. He put the grenade launcher he had brought down with the bag, hiding it. He had his rifle, his pistols... That was all he needed right now. He felt so much lighter, which made him feel so much better then he had. He walked over to where Midnight was, staying quiet as she found her target.

"Our job is to report the main location of them, only one of them is there. I suggest potshot, and follow him back to the main squad" He says, preparing to move down the hill, raising his rifle as he slowly switches to more... combat mode.

laying prone next to midnight dude, looked thru his scope and saw the lone guy, he appeared to be just standing there. at first he was brimming with pride for his new students but then frowned.

"... what would you two do if a warning shot whizzed at our feet right now?" is all he said

doc shook his head "yeah it might be fun to @#$% around with them. but right now we have the advantage. high ground, stealth, and we know where they are. a warning shot would only alert them that there being watched and compromise us. what we should do now is mark that position and sneak down to a spot where we can track them. we have our hindsight, we know where they are. we can go in fast and light to get the intel we need."

dude gets up packing away his scope "put it simple, we find out the who, what, where, when, why ... and how many. that said you two both have experience in this right? how would you suggest. we forget our intel?" he took his large thermos and drank a few gulps from it.

doc sat down. this was the part where figuring out what to do got easier. but actually doing it got harder.

"I could use a surpressor...?" she suggested as a joke, after all, she doubted she'd be allowed to open fire on them. But the idea still lingered in her mind.

"Gathering intel? Well, i'll stick up here, I can see enough, plus repositioning won't be too hard" she said "This is where you guys step up, follow him, and i'll stick on the highground" she suggested. While not ideal she split up, it was her style. Lone wolf and high ground. She hated being on even footing in combat, every advantage is what she wanted, each one she could tip into her favour meant a higher chance of her surviving.

Dude simply rolled his eyes; at the request for a suppressor he left his main pack and thermos behind. doc looked at him funny thinking it was the first time he saw him without the beloved big green drink.

"no shooting. your job is to cover us. if you fire even with a suppressor we lose our position, stealth and element of surprise. that goes for all of you. no shooting unless we have to. ... actually this is training no shooting in general ... for now." doc checked his equipment, he had only his c.l.s bag which hung form his back like a small box. "blacking, this is where we go light. take only what you need."

Dude nods "midnight report on the radio we spotted the enemy, give them our call signs (code names) mine is dude, or archangel. either one, it goes better with the whole reaper theme. blacking. take slack, ill show you how to do a stalk and ambush." he said checking his ammo and nodding "I'm ready." doc nods "ready."

What was the point of her rifle if she wasn't even allowed to shoot with a surpressor on? It masked the muzzle flash and made her rifle silent...er. She rolled her eyes, but nodded her head. Although, she was slightly confused at her orders. Report to who, they were on a training execise and the enemies were fellow allied solders...She shrugged it off and focused her aim onto the solders chest, but didn't touch her trigger...yet

Blackwing dumped his pack, and grabbed what he needed. He had his canteen on his belt, secured and non flabby. His duel pistols and his rifle. The grenade launcher he was planning on leaving, he had no need for it right now.

"Right Chill, moving down the hill"

(Will fix up more at a later date, bit busy)

dude came to doc and midnight he said "just radio check headquarters, give them our callsigns and frequencies. mine is dude, ... or ill go with the biblical we got going here, ill be ST.Mike HAHAH! yeah call signs and report we have enemy activity in the area. then you got to be our eyes. keep watch and make sure we don't walk right into them."  he checked his rifle making sure it wasn't loaded.

he merrily walked down the hill "so if we know enemy are in the area, its best to make a wedge snapped formation. that way were spared out more, can see more, and can fight better if they spot us. as point man you will lead from the center ill be on the wing." he explains. as they go across the underbrush climbing over trees and shrubs they come upon the spot where they saw the guy. "ok blacking what do you think we should do know? we know they were here once, probably close by, but we don't know where they are now?"
