History:

Saffron was born in the city of Coltkata in a nation south of Saddle Arabia to a family of well-known engineers and artists. She grew up with the trappings of adecent wealth and a superb education, but there was a strong tug on the part of her parents to experience something else. They had relatives who lived in and spoke well of Equestria and when she was an older filly her immediate family moved to Canterlot, where members of the extended family had paved the way. It was a big move for everypony, but Saffron was at least young enough to have time to adapt.

Her mother, on the other hoof, quickly grew homesick as she was unable to adapt. After a year of living in Canterlot her mother demanded they move back. Her father, however, didn't want to move and eventually the two separated, though they still get along well enough for the sake of the child. She still loves both, and her mother visits from time to time. The transition wasn't all that easy on Saffron either. The language barrier was intense and the culture was so different especially in a city like Canterlot which was itself an incredibly different culture from the rest of Equestria.

Even school was different. She had to deal with some snobby ponies, but even in Canterlot the average pony was as friendly as all get out, and her natural kindness always helped her. What really helped her settle in was that little slice of home every night which was her father's traditional Coltkatan dinners. It was a unique flavor in Canterlot with a mixture of spices and textures that delighted her every night. When she brought her new Equestrian friends over it was these dinners more than anything else which made her home memorable. And once ponies wanted to stay for the food, they'd quickly learn to appreciate Saffron herself as well as the Coltkatan cultural ticks they had brought over with them.

She was determined to cook as well as her father, but she was never as good as him despite all the times she tried. She would try again and again and again and still failed, but she got closer each time. Finally while trying to make a dish that shared part of her name, saffron basmati rice, she outdid her father and earned her cutie mark. She was so excited all she could do for the next few weeks was cook and come up with new recipes and running around and trying to fatten her friends up with great cooking.

After she had settled in with her cooking she begged her father to start a restaurant, something he had been considering doing for a while. With two cooks, what could go wrong? They did and at first everything was going well. Her father spent more time running the customer side of things and she cooked, but it wasn't too long before business trickled away. The style of the restaurant clashed with the expectations of Canterlot clientele. The restaurant lost considerable amounts of money and it was on the verge of dying not long after it started.

Luckily, Rarity and Pinkie Pie happened. With their help The Tasty Treat earned a name for itself and customers started to come for its alternative offerings when compared to other nearby restaurants. Now the Tasty Treat is so successful that Saffron is being asked to cook for private parties and needed to hire several more cooks for the store. There may even be more Tasty Treats opening up outside of Canterlot if this pace keeps up!

Personality:

Saffron is a well-read, well-educated mare who never seemed to realize that the silver spoon she was born with could be used for something else other than cooking and creation. Despite all of her success she rarely lets it go to her head and doesn't have the ego common to other chefs and business owners. She seeks out challenges head on and meets them with gusto and flair, and a large degree of positivity. She still has portions of that familial wealth laying around though she rarely touches it. Indeed, the only real sign of more than average upbringing is her style. While not uncommon for her people, the silks, fabrics, and jewelry she wears is of a very high caliber. It is how she promotes the success of her family and culture without interfering with her work.

She is unsure of herself and to a certain degree self-conscious when interacting with others. She leads with her strengths when dealing with somepony new and tends to seek acceptance from them before moving past them and into the softer underbelly. While she is very confident in her cooking skills she isn't nearly as confident in her personal relationships. An unkind word or a misused phrase can quickly spiral out of control. She is fantastically positive pony but once wounded she can be slow to heal, meaning a fight that would be forgotten about by most friends in a day or two may linger in her memory for weeks.

She is a very kind and helpful pony who constantly wants to see the best in others, but her patience can wear thin if she feels like she is being treated poorly. She has a bad temper than can flare up when provoked and when added to her long memory and inability to move on sometimes she is capable of holding grudges that she herself can come to regret holding. Nonetheless, when she isn't being treated poorly she can be one of the easiest ponies to get along with as her earnest desire to be liked makes her an engaging sort. This is helped by her ability to speak Coltkatan, Equestrian, Saddle Arabian, Unyasan, and Aquelian. She can also read Kastroti, though the next time an Earth pony has cause to read something from that city will be the first.

Outside of cooking she really enjoys reading (books to tabloid and everything in between) and projector shows as well as athletic events and shows. She is a bit of a gossiper who finds a lot of spice in the normal events of day to day life. She has a habit of seeing things which aren't there which can compound some of her romantic woes but make the world a more interesting place in her eyes. She herself is not much for getting stuck in the mud of some activity but can and has endured it for the sake of somepony else, though she would much prefer to go ahead and head to the spa.
