History:

Hantā was the sole child of a doctor and the Neighponese colonial governor of the Fillyphines. The couple lavished much love on their only daughter, which was why it filled Hantā with great sadness when her parents failed to return from an ocean voyage to the Home Islands. Although the Neighponese Navy found wreckage from the ship the couple had been traveling, no passengers were ever found. Officially, the Shogunate blamed the incident on Polyneighsian pirates, but no concrete evidence for this claim was ever established.

For several days after first hearing the horrible news, Hantā spoke no words whatsoever as she valiantly fought to hold back her tears. Taking up the habit of aimlessly wandering the Fillyphine capital city of Nihon, the little filly overheard rumor-mongering from a pair of fisher griffons. Apparently, a sailor one of them knew had witnessed Fukajira, a white kaiju with attributes of both a whale and a shark, swimming the waters near where the lost ship was last spotted. While nobody saw the attack the ship in question, it had accumulated a history of menacing the Polyneighsian seas.

After overhearing that conversation, the White Whale-Shark plagued Hantā's nightmares for the next few weeks. When it became apparent that the night terrors wouldn't subside, the chief butler at the Governor's Mansion (who temporarily assumed de facto parental responsibilities in the wake of his employers' disappearances) advised young Hantā to face her fears head-on; to learn everything she could about Fukajira and its ilk. To that end, the filly was encouraged to spend an entire day at the library to do nothing but reading.

Even though information was sparse on Fukajira itself, it became evident that the White Whale-Shark was only a long list in a line of aquatic monsters that have terrorized the seas since before the dawn of recorded history. More importantly, she read of all the successful stories behind the Neighponese Navy's efforts to hunt the monsters down and stop them. Armed with the knowledge that kaiju can be defeated in battle, Hantā understood then what she was meant to do: to dedicate herself entirely to ending the kaiju menace once and for all.

From that day henceforth, Hantā never shed tears or smiled in merriment. Like the orgish face which manifested itself as her cutie mark upon realizing her destiny, the filly enjoyed nothing else but learning about her enemy and defeating it in combat. Ponies began nicknaming her Akuma for her demonlike-obsession, which Hantā proudly adopted as her new surname. Understanding her path meant joining the Neighponese Navy when she came of age, Akuma demanded her surviving relatives to send her to a Naval Prep Academy, which they obliged without question.

Spending almost every free moment on studying the Navy's illustrious history and all the foes it faced in its long existence, Akuma was on the fast track for a career as a naval officer. Her marks at the prep academy were so high that she was allowed to transfer into the main Naval Academy before becoming a legal adult. Her stellar recommendations then awarded her an officer's commission a full two years before the usual graduation date. Five years later, Akuma was captain of her own vessel. Several years afterward, Akuma became one of the youngest ponies to earn the rank of admiral.

The remarkable career of the prodigious Admiral Akuma however encountered a patch of rough waters. With her fleet on patrol in Polyneighsian waters, the Admiral received reports of the familiar menace Fukajira harassing a merchant convoy. Eager to avenge the loss of her parents, Akuma directed all her ships to hunt down the White Whale-Shark. Fukajira wasn't stupid enough to take on an entire fleet though, instead fleeing in the direction of Ironwreck Island. Assuming that the creature wouldn't make it to the safety provided by Ironwreck, Admiral Akuma maintained the pursuit only to find her ships unexpectedly ambushed in open ocean by a host of sea kaiju. Every ship under her command was sent to the bottom, placing Akuma's competence as a commander into question.

Choosing to regard the disaster as an incident that couldn't have been foreseen, the highest levels of the Neighponese government opted to simply appoint Akuma Hantā as Governor-General of the Socoltra Islands. It was a position where the mare could continue to use her talents while ever-so conveniently keeping her off the bridge of a steam frigate. For her part, Akuma was a competent colonial governor who managed to suppress rebellious factions in her territory without provoking excessive dissent from the locals. Still, the fires of vengeance burned hot in Akuma, and she yearned for the day when she could continue her crusade once more.

With the loss of the last shogun to a kaiju attack one year ago, Akuma's time has now come. For her vocal warnings throughout the years concerning the dangers posed by kaiju, Akuma was promoted to Grand Admiral by the new Shogun. Now charged with oversight of the entire Neighponese military apparatus, it's expected that the Eastern Seas will soon play host to the greatest kaiju-hunting campaign in all of history.....

Unique Traits:

Grand Admiral Akuma possesses a highly analytical mind, cultivated through years of studying all the enemies and cultures Neighpon has clashed with throughout the centuries. Cool and calculating under normal circumstances, the mare is more than patient enough to wait as long as it takes for the perfect ambush. Despite her past blunders in pursuing the beastly Fukajira, Akuma is otherwise a proven naval commander.

Character Personality:

True to her name, Akuma Hantā only ever seems to express emotion when in the middle of a pursuit or combat action. When in the thick of things, the wicked smile of a hunter can be seen on the commander's face as she enthusiastically issues commands. The rest of the time, Akuma maintains an aloof and callous demeanor, seemingly probing for ponies' faults with every piercing glance. During moments of R&R, the Grand Admiral prefers solitude as she studies and plans, never fraternizing with even her own subordinate officers.

A relentless hunter of her enemies, Grand Admiral Akuma is only concerned with success at all costs. She holds no regard for the well-being of crews under her command; all they are expected to do is follow orders diligently. Akuma's neverending studies also fills her with an incredible level of hubris, which results in the commander consistently dismissing concerns from her subordinates out of the belief that they have no conception of the big picture.

Concerning the new Shogun, Grand Admiral Akuma expects him to accept the military counsel of his Machi Bugyō without question. What value is there in the Shogun's input if he hasn't so much as commanded a military unit in his life, let alone fought in battle? Unlike her prior superior officers, Akuma does not observe the niceties involved in granting the Shogun proper respect. And if the Shogun starts questioning Akuma's judgement too much, he can always be reminded of the loss of his predecessor to kaiju if it'll make him see some sense.....

Character Summary:

Tartarus hath no fury like a hunter wronged by a beast. To put it shortly: Grand Admiral Akuma doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. She absolutely will not stop... ever, until the White Whale-Shark is caught for good!
