The first seeds of a new life [Dusty, PyroBlaze, DerpRavener, RexDraco]

The seas raged along with Calder’s heart, The sky was dark as his mood, the rain as heavy as his feelings. Yet he pushed on as wave after wave crashed over his head and the stones tied to his body tried to pull him down but failed as a flaming rage stronger than the hiding sun boiled inside of him. Death was unacceptable, no only one thing was. Staying alive so he undo ALL of his father's work… And that worthless brother. No, ALL of the clan was going to go down with them! No matter how long it took, no matter how low he must bow his head or how deep he most lie. They were all going to suffer like he did for so long. But to do that he must live today and onward he swims to the flickering glow of a settlement on land all through the night until his hooves touched sand and dragged his body out of the sea and onward inland and there he passed out, sleeping on the sands of beach to be found in the morning.

----

Calder’s eyes opened too glimmer of a mooring, his body felt sore and weak. He was in no shape to run or hide and that worried him… But it can be a strength. He was helpless and just maybe that can pull on the heartstrings of the eon or few to help him… He just had to hope he was not to rusty speaking to the ones that lived here, slaves are hardly the best teachers for new languages. But soon he will have put them too the test as he heard the town slowly coming to life, it will not be long before somepony spots him. “Please don’t be the same bloody mare that took my leg.” He hummed to himself with a dry chuckle.

An Xiang always enjoyed these sorts of tasks. She was not in the capitol as she usually was, but rather visiting one of the smaller, coastal villages. Officially, she was here as part of an ongoing effort to stop a plague discovered among the crops, following up on earlier efforts to see how their countermeasures were doing. Her observations thus far showed promising results, although it was too early to tell with any certainty.

An Xiang had no intention of shirking her duties, but that didn't mean she couldn't enjoy herself. That was the beauty of these sorts of tasks, one could take some time to oneself and explore nature, while carrying out their responsibilities. It was important to take breaks, even when wasn't away from their home, to avoid one's work being sloppy among other things.

Today, An Xiang decided to begin with a walk around the shore. She would have work to do, but nothing that needed to be rushed and her presence here was largely passive anyways. She didn't need to take any urgent action. So rather than fret about what she might need to do in future, she was going for a short hike to keep her head clear.

It would not turn out to be that simple. It was only a short ways into An Xiang's walk that she noticed a figure. It was a little strange, as otherwise no one was in this section of the beach, but her first thought was that it was probably just another pony who wanted to get some air, and she paid it no mind. At first she kept walking. As she drew closer however, she noticed something off. The angle that the figure lay at was slightly unnatural. The more she looked, the more it seemed to be someone who couldn't get up than someone who was laying down by choice. She ran toward the figure, intent to help.

Drawing closer revealed yet another surprise. It was a caribou! One that was perhaps a little scrawny by caribou standards, but still imposing to An Xiang herself. She had to wonder where he came from, and what lead to him arriving on these shores in such a state. These were questions she would need to ask, but not right away. Before her was an injured creature, and she needed to make sure he would be okay before any other questions could be answered.

An Xiang knew a little healing magic, but that was not the same as actually being medically trained. Her plan was to fetch the local doctor, but first she wanted to get a sense of things. “Are you alright?” She asked after a moment's hesitation. “Are you in any particular pain?”

It was easier to arrive at the quiet edge of a costal village than parade into a busy port. While his title and fearsome nature was hardly beyond the borders of the Crystal Empire and a few dignitaries from the Equestrian Empire: he still stuck out like a sore thumb. A unicorn that stood at the same height as an adult Earth Stallion with fur as Black as charcoal and an ash-black mane stood out. He wore his fur inlaid, red cloak draped over his shoulders to distort his size as best he could. Though one thing he could not go without, an accessory that has defined him for ages: his metal, plate sabatons and metal circlet. The armor had become as part of him as the ruby Crystals that stood as symbol of his corruption. While corrupt no longer the red stone remained part of his Umbrum form, never allowing him to forget what his fear and hatred has wrought onto others. A brand burned into his Incorporeal husk.

For now the former king of monsters was not the fearsome billow of corrupted smoke, but a strong, land worthy stallion whose looks could label him as royalty though his lips dared not utter such reverences again, not until such was earned. If he was going to forever be known as the King of monsters it would be because he overcame them. Doing his best to not linger, the stared already dusting his coat with a faint red. It was understanding, the stares, but having such attentions, positive ones, was still quite new. Not unwelcomed, but new.

Adjusting himself, making sure the saddlebags beneath his cloak were evenly rest on his spine, the pony began his March forward. The heavy claps of his sabatons we're not the only thing to draw attention, but the way he Marche. Whilst his corruption no longer presented itself what remained was the ferocious pride. It was like watching a warrior-king parade down the streets. The soft rabble of the peasantry was warning. No one seemed afraid, happily working and living their lives. It made the ideas he once held of slavery all the more wretched. Despite the actions sitting more beneath a flag of hateful revenge than arrogant superiority, it did not make the actions any less remorseful. If anything they were far more despairing.

Amidst his private musings the king's ears would catch a most distressing cry:

"Are you alright?” A feminine voice called. After a paise there came a second call. “Are you in any particular pain?”

His thick legs pulled to a stop, tail swishing behind him as he would swivel his ears in attempt to pinpoint the direction of the worried queries. While the situation did not concern him:  the stallion, very well, could not ignore somepony in trouble. He was not who he once was… turning heel he would fall into a trot from his paced gait. Heavy in his build the muscular stallion would find little difficulty switching terrain from the aged cobblestone walkways to the sand embankment, but it was no easy task shuffling his heavily feathered fetlock through the sands as his hooves sunk ankle deep. Plowing through with ambling gaits he soon pulled into view from the horizon, spotting the young pair, to whom.had caught his attention.

He did not draw too close, leaving a space of three ponies between them lest his form summoned distress in the others. His brows we're twisted up in worry, ears rotated back as he pulled a forehooves up and off the sinking ground to display his concern. "Is all well? Do you require aide?" His deep, gravelly tone was like listening to a bull speak more so than a pony. He had a form to match, that was for sure. "I am foreign, I do not seek to meddle, yet…" the smaller male seemed -- quite distressed. Even by the way he spoke the stallion of shadows seemed like a royal dignitary. His speech pattern was formal and his words were like a humble lod regarding the common rabble.

Naturally his manner of speech sounded quite condescending, as did the way he moved seemed to show he looked down on others, but his kind tone and willingness to help could dispel that immediately.

Liviel was, for all intents and purposes, lost... she wasn't sure how she had ended up at this unfamiliar town, but she felt like she was here for a reason. The diamond dog sighed to herself as she walked, eventually coming upon the three others and blinking a bit as she saw the caribou and the unusual unicorn. The mare with them seemed familiar, as if she had seen her somewhere before...

"Excuse me sir, but do you need any help?" She asked gently, setting her things down to look him over as best she could. She had a little bit of medical training, she just hoped she remembered it well enough.

A Qilin, unicorn and dog. If it was not be being in a horrific about of pain Calder may have just died from laughing as he watched the three in short order show up around him and he counted his blessing for knowing the basis to speak too both the unicorn and the Qilin. It will not be pretty, but it worked for speaking to slaves. Gathering himself he looks over at the Qilin, not brother to try moving he just follows her with his eyes and speaks. ["Leg gone. Gone, look alright you? Of course, alright, so alright. No, hurt.  Lots of hurt. No alright."] He muttered in dry choked breaths as he forced himself to speak in a broken and heavily accented way, but his words were understandable to the Qilin.

Next he looked at the Unicorn… He was even worse with pony but worth a try. “Yes require of help yes, do look good? No, look leg, gone, Why all ask if need help, do all day start missing leg on sand?” He asked snorting with pain as he looked to the dog… what the heck did she know how to speak? The only one he knew was chained to a seat to row and only new the words to stop and go… But at least this one seemed smarter. “All three ask if fine, all three see I lost leg, lay in sand. I worry if all three need help more.” He added trying to stand up on shaking legs just to have them give out as he falls back on the sand. “... but help need yes, please help. water, need water.”

An Xiang bit her lip, and her ears flattened backwards for a moment. She was expecting a response like this truth be told, as in many was it was not a very well phrased question for what she was really getting at. She inwardly cursed her own lack of experience in this regard, surely one better prepared would have a less awkward way of getting the information they needed.

Still, newfound shame aside, An Xiang did at least manage to get a few pieces of important information out of the caribou. For one thing, she learned his leg was missing. Given the way her patient was sprawled out on the ground, that hadn't been immediately clear. Second, while it was clear from his voice that he was not doing well, he was conscious enough to be making noise and have some awareness of his surroundings. It meant things were not as bad as they could have been.

Fortunately the caribou made a request, which was enough to bring An Xiang out of her thoughts. He needed water, which made sense if he just recently washed ashore. Who could tell how long he'd been out at sea?

Two others had arrived while that initial conversation had taken place. An Xiang probably would have found it more comforting if they didn't make such a strange sight, one being a unicorn with strange adornments, while the other was a diamond dog. Fortunately, the diamond dog was at least slightly familiar, even if she and An Xiang had never spoke to one another. They weren't her focus right now though.

“Right, water!” An Xiang said, already turning and running back toward town. It would give her a chance to help the wounded caribou, and get away from this awkward situation, at least for a time. She did so enjoy when she could multitask. “If either of you know the local doctor,” she called over her shoulder as she left, “could you please get them?”

An Xiang would return in a minute or two.

He pulled his hooves through the shifting sands, his body weight alone finding difficulty in holding above the surface. It took a bit of perseverance to keep from catching his armor shodden hoof in the silt. The dark stallion furrowed his bushy brows as he shifted to straighten out his shoulders and back so he still appeared to stand tall and straight despite his uneven, struggling steps. The red, faux fur cloak slid against his body with each movement, tugging u when his neck turned, pulling upon the metal collar that clasped it around his neck. He listened to the fellow scratch out words in a language he could not quite understand. Something about it was familiar. It was not the words, but the tone. The words flowed, like speaking a poem meant to be sung. Still lovely, but hardly understandable making its true meaning become lost in translation. The injured Caribou’s breathing was labored and now that he was closer up he could see the fellow was having a difficult time. As such: it made his previous question seem insensitive and, the king himself look ignorant, he was rather untrained in spotting such situations.

Still learning to be more considerate towards outsiders: the former king of monsters had his hooves full in trying to reconcile the beast he had allowed himself to become. Upon that consideration he would curl his lip slightly at the description. Though the self-deprecation was an accurate one he felt there was a title worse, of which he wholly deserved. Nevertheless he had to keep his focus. Shaking his head the stallion could only part his muzzle, an attempt to declare his failure to understand what the Caribou had said. He knew not how to.define the creature as it was the first time he has seen a fellow ungulate with horns and was graced with such thick looking fur. Even the Crystal Ponies who were bound to a country played in ice hadn't fur so dense. One could surmise it was their magic that protected them, but that was a riddle for another time.

When a more familiar language filtered from.the stallion’s lips, little aware that the bull was far from home and a being's whose physiology and sociology were the polar opposite of a pony's. Given the sarcastic gripe of his health Sombra could see his attitude addressed the concept of foreignness. Not that, as an Umbrum, he could speak. He at least looked like a pony and accustomed himself to their mannerisms. Though in these far, eastern lands it was far more a stretch to compare as he knew next to nothing of these Neighponese and the dragonponies that seemed to occupy the lands. It was equal enough to his current knowledge of the bull.

When the Diamond Dog made clear she was there to also help, the Umbrum king truly felt queet among such stooges. Whilst it was a bit harsh to allow such a thought to pass his mind there was still a part of him who found the ignorance of ponykind a thorn of irritation that haunted his foalhood, however false his being a fola, was. It was real enough for Hope and him. Shaking his head the stately stallion stamped his hoof on the sand, allowing its shifting granules to swallow the heavy impact of the sabaton covered foreleg. Shaking his head he snorted, a clear display of his bruising temperament. It took a reminder to prevent his shadows from manifesting and his temper from flaring. His patience with ponies was still rather limited, having suffered at their hooves in both his youth and in adulthood. One supposed it was his fault. Even if he has let go of his hatred he still has his life to thank for having such thin skin towards such things. He blinked slowly, taking a breath.

“Water? No, “ he repeated the stallion's request and answered the mare’s question. “I am not from here.” If that was not already obvious. “I would likely become lost before I could find one.” He looked to the Diamond Dog. She was far different from any one he has heard of in Equestria. He had never seen one in the Crystal Empire prior to his sleep and awakening. “Are you a native?” He called to the white furred canine. “I shall remain and assist.” It was a that simple.

He could do little else as a foreigner and given he at least owed another living creature this after the carnage he and his ilk in the past had done. It stood, likely, they had caused more than any measurable, or reasonable soul, could have. Even this fellow’s State was a blessed mercy that would have never been afforded under his former rule. It was a vile thought and one that pushed him to act. Though his thoughts carried along his body moved with strength and the grace of an emperor as he lowered his head to offer the young bull his body and leverage so he could, at the very least, sit up. Were it necessary the king would drop to his knees and would lay in the sand so Calder was no longer eating it.

Ah... she had thought there was something off about the caribou, but her angle of approach hadn't really allowed her to see what was wrong. Well, that was certainly an issue. She nodded to the qilin as she ran off to get some drinking water, looking back over to the unicorn as he spoke next.

"I am from Long Guo, actually." She responded to his question, moving over to the caribou to provide what first aid she could before going to find an actual doctor.

"I shall be back, just make sure he doesn't get worse." She said to the unicorn before running off to the village.

Calder watched as two left, one for water and one for a doctor. Thus he was left the Unicorn, at least he felt more safe around him. Ponies were a forgiving and weak lot… Well maybe not to weak, from what he heard about things they gave some bulls a rather good thrashing, his dad ranted about it for weeks and saying that is why they did not help other clans. He was more confused as to what the unicorn was doing when a head was lowered down to him. Was it to help him? No one has bothered to help pull him up before… ok that was a lie, only one ever did. “Uh… thank.” He says to the unicorn as he placed hs frunt legs around the black unicorns neck and with some help, pulled himself up so he was sitting on his flank.

“Calder. Name Calder. Thank for help.” Calder says looking around the coastline, he was lucky too land so close to help… And more lucky it was not close to where that battle was. Last thing he’d need is too swach up next to a camp of soldiers. If you can call what happened a battle, that was a mess. You’d need an army to take that city, not a couple of ships. “You pony, not from here you say? You from pony land. Ponies good, ponies nice. Calder thankful, I on pony side.” He added hoping to put him on ‘their side’ soon as he can. The sooner they saw him as a good bull in need of help the better.

True to her promise, even if it was purely a mental one, An Xiang returned about a minute later.  She was breathing heavily and carrying a large bucket of sloshing water, which she set down in the sand in front of the injured caribou.  She paused only a moment longer, what she needed to compose herself, before she offered explanation.  “Sorry for the wait, I'm afraid I'm not very familiar with the town yet, and I took a wrong turn.”

An Xiang looked at the bucket for a moment, before looking back at the caribou.  “I know, it's not the most dignified, but I wasn't sure how much you'd need.  Dignity should be secondary to health in this case, I feel.”  She paused in thought for a moment, before adding, “though I could fetch some cups as well, if you prefer.”

An Xiang wanted to ask if there was any change, or how the caribou was doing, but saw little point.  It had not been gone that long, and anything new to be learned could likely be found through just a visual examination.  Any other questions she wanted to ask, about their stories or plans, would be best kept until she was sure of the caribou's health.  She sat back and took a moment to observe, looking between the caribou and the unicorn.  There wasn't much to find in some ways, at least not to her limited training, although she did note that the caribou was now sitting up.  After a moment she asked, “Can you stand?  We could bring you into town, you could rest somewhere more comfortable than the ground.”

The prince of monsters would narrow his eyes, cheeks pinching up at the clear expression of concern to overcome his features, bordering on concern and ignorance. He had offered, yet he had not considered his own experience in this particular circumstance. He had simply accepted it was the right thing to do, despite his personal trepidation involving himself so directly with ponies on his own. He had never taken care of a pony, caribou, or otherwise. Being used to being taken care of by others for the whole of his life: come time to face the absolution of life's often difficult choices he had collapsed beneath its weight, never having built support. He had been selfish and weak a great deal of his life. He could not hold onto those emotions though. He could feel them already tugging at his chest seeping into that dark place that still remained. That malicious laughter rang in the back of his mind, tempting him to...

The white-furred Diamond Dog declared her foreign position amongst the group. Her voice anchored his thoughts. His the black cartilage swiveled forward in attentiveness. So it was not just he, or the washed up caribou who was out of place. At least there were others to alleviate the burden of aiding the wayfarer. But… that was no way to think if the situation either. The youth was no burden. The only burden were these agonizing thoughts.

Beneath his hooves his shadow shifted under his unease. The sensation caused him to fold back his ears. An Xiang seemed more level headed than he could process at the moment. Calder’s thanks did touch the damper side of things. It was true that there were some groups less peaceable than ponies. Discounting the Umbrum from that list, as they were more inclined to rid the land of everything, there were those that just sought to make peace a tumultuous journey. He could not stop the sigh that escaped his chest. Ponies, good, huh?

Sorry, I am no pony either.

The king seemed to have a bit on his mind, but when An Xiang suggested Calder stand, he would agree. It was all the better than distract the former tyrant of monsters. “Yes, ponies are helpful, but as you see others are too.” Not only was An Xiang more than helpful, so was that Diamond Dog. “Come you may lean on me. We should get a leg up in the case the white furred one finds, or fails to, find a physician.”

And much to Liviel’s luck she would be able to find a doctor, though he seemed to be visiting from Equestria. Of all the luck! He seemed a puffy maned unicorn with thick spectacles and absolutely endearing whiskers!

Liviel smiled as she spotted what appeared to be a doctor, hurrying over the the bespectacled stallion and getting his attention. After assuring him she came in peace and that she needed his help, she quickly lead him back to the caribou who now was at least sitting up, if not standing with the help of the others.

"Here he is, sir, the caribou that needs your help. He has lost a leg at some point, though that seems to be the worst of it, at least from what I could tell before I came to get you. Please, help him however you can." Liviel said as the two approached, indicating the caribou to the stallion.

Calder was deeply thankful for all the help coming but just maybe… to much help. The more that was around him the more odds one of them heard about the failed raid and can connect the dots. Failed raid, washed up bull that is missing a leg. He hoped none did and he can make up whatever story he needed to pass it off. Taking the water he drinks it. “Thanks.” He mutters watching them around him. They wanted him to stand… Good too do, but not yet. “No, no stand. Not now. Let rest more.” He says shaking his head, most of it was him worrying about walking with just three legs. “Will try soon.”

Looking over as Liviel rushed back with a doctor he snorted. “Healer?” He looked at his stump wrapped up in banges… About time he replaced them. They were soaking wet from the sea. “New cloth, dry bed… fire. Let dry by fire. All needed” He says waving a hoof as he leans on the unicorn. “But thank all, good all you.” He says still fumbling with the words.

The unicorn seemed to be deep in thought when An Xiang had returned, at least if she was reading the frown on his face correctly.  She would have set the note aside, if not for what he said next, which was to explain to the wounded caribou that creatures other than ponies were helpful as well.  Or was that an argument he was making?  An Xiang looked between the two of them for a moment, curiosity evident in her expression, but she said nothing for the moment.  It was too close to a private matter to make her feel like prying.  If it proved important, she could always ask the caribou later.

And speaking of, the caribou rejected the idea of standing.  It might make things a little more complicated, but An Xiang decided it was fair enough.  The caribou had been through who-knows-what in getting to the village in the first place, having lost a leg and washing ashore however distant from whatever place he called home.  He did agree with the need to move, expressing a desire for a fire to dry off and a bed.  It took only a moment's thought for An Xiang to realize what was needed.  “Alright, a stretcher then.”  Her face fell.  “Er, though I don't know where to find one...”  She wanted to ask the doctor, but knew better than to interrupt his work.  It left her in a bind, for the moment.

She decided to pass the time gathering information.  Things seemed to have stabilized somewhat, the caribou seemed to be out of any immediate danger, and with time to sit An Xiang realized she really didn't know anything about him, even the simplest details.  “I don't believe I've heard yet,” she said, looking at the caribou, “What's your name?  Where did you come from?”  It might be a bit unusual to ask such questions so soon, but there was a reason aside from lingering concerns about not knowing this caribou.  “Surely you'd like to get back there at some point, right?”

The Doctor seemed rather friendly and upbeat. Though he didn't speak a word of Neighponese so it was a bit difficult walking around town, hence why he was a bit lost in the first place! Haha! Jokes aside Sombra seemed mildly dejected by the Caribou’s refusal for help. He could understand that it was probably best to take it slow, but Sombra had bent his knee to help the fellow so the former Umbrum felt a bit silly. He did not like seeming out of place and in Neighpon he stuck out like a sore hoof. Upon their initial meeting there had been a fire burning in the Caribou that reminded the Shadow Unicorn of himself, in some ways. He could tell himself that it was a sense of community and goodwill he had harkened to the call to aide another. He could continue to like to himself until it had come true.

Despite his chance of heart Sombra was still a result of his nature and the nurturing he had received in his youth. The good ponies of the Crystal Empire had done nothing but right by him. Even as much as he despised the secrets, they had done only what they felt best for him. Irregardless of the situations at hoof he was a citizen of the Empire and had to behave as such, but there were times when he found himself asking that horrid question. The remnants of his misunderstandings crawling through his head. Far be it for the unicorn to act upon them, knowing better. But why should he stop to help when ponies could easily stand to suffer a few more hardships? It surely built character and the peaceable equines could stand to more understand that not everyone had it easy. If you were not a pony in the Empire or if you did not fit into their happy little mold you were an outsider.

The Empire was not as standardized as Equestria though. But they were, by measure, greater cowards than even Equestrians who would fight tooth and hoof to right a wrong. He supposed it was what they were wont to do after being annihilated nearly twice in their long history. Calder’s refusal did do to wound the king’s ego, an ego well earned as he had stood matched to the Princesses at one point, though together those royals and their allies had no equal… He snorted, a reaction barely resisted. It was clear he was a touch unsettled by the refusal, but would say nothing against it as he pushed to stand once more, keeping close in the case the injured bou changed his mind or fell.

The doctor tittered and motioned to the Diamond Dog. Seeing as she had things she could help him more easily. He would as Liviel to aide him in bandaging up the Caribou’s injury with nice, clean swathing tape. He had such things at hoof in his medical bag! A good doctor didn't leave without it! “Oh could you start a fire?” He asked An Xiang, pausing. “Hi o okoshimasu?” He’d repeat, slowly. It would seem to doctor could do with more Neighponese lessons!

Nevertheless there seemed progress. Sombra found himself on edge with Calder. It was not that he was uncomfortable or offended by the brash and proud youth. If anything Calder reminded the Shadow Unicorn of himself. And that was, perhaps, the most damning. Experience often had little to do with being able to sympathize with another's plight. It was sometimes necessary to have walked a mile in another's horseshoes to see their problems, but ponies and non-ponies alike, faced a myriad of different problems that did not always cross paths with each other. If one would only find themselves able to understand another without having faced the same trials or tribulations, than little would it mean to be able to choose one's fate.

The doctor would hopefully be quick with the dog's help and move to inspect Clader’s overall health. Once cleared he'd give his opinion on what was best for his healing. “Keep him warm, bandages clean, and ho ho! Find him a meal! He seems desperately underweight for a Caribou! Do get him off the beach as soon as he is able to move. I am unsure where one can get a stretcher so far out. I haven't even found the hospital yet!” Poor doctor in a foreign land! Bowing his head the odd unicorn would be off again in his search! He did leave Calder with some Willow bark chew to aide with his pain too!

“He is right.” Sombra spoke in his deep tone. “A bit of food may be all he needs to stand and come along. I would not be against walking with any who know the region to a local clinic."

Ironic, truly.

Sombra spat to himself.

You can't help them of you keep failing to help yourself.

He clenched his jaw.

These injuries looked deserved. What did he do?

Sombra turned his emerald green eye to the young Caribou, his head cocked slightly to better see the lad on his side. What did he do? These were no simple injuries nor was this a simple course to lead him to shores of a foreign -- no, no. Sometimes bad things happened to good ponies… he couldn't start to self doubt now. He had been doing so well today...

Liviel helped the doctor as much as she could, following his instructions as they changed the bandages and checked the caribou in general. Once the doctor was done, she helped him pack up his things and bowed to him in thanks, giving him a friendly smile.

“Thank you Sir. I would assist in your search, but I believe I am still needed here.” Liviel said, waving to him as he left. Turning back to the group, she nodded to the unicorn’s words. “I have not been in this village long, but I would be willing to assist in gathering food. Can you please build a fire while we are gone?” She said, directing the question to the other mare.
