An Accidental Date

OOC

Midnight squinted as the sun slowly began to rise over Canterlot. Soon his shift would end and he would finally be able to get some rest. With the slightest smile, the areion would begin making his way back to Canterlot Castle for the Changing of the Guard. After a quick ceremony, that was more to the tourists of Canterlot to witness more then anything else, He was dismissed. Entering the barracks, Midnight sighed and would remove his helmet and run his hoof through his mane. As he made his way to his locker to remove the rest of his armor, he would take note of an envelope that had been placed there.

"Spec. Midnight Oil, Lunar Branch," as he would read the address label under his breath. Not wanting to open it in front of the other guards, he quickly stowed it in his saddlebag and made his way into the Canterlot Streets as the hussel and bussel of the morning in the city began.

Yiska wasn't doing much of anything at the moment, simply laying on a bench and listening to the sounds of the awakening city and the nearby nature. Her ears twitched every now and then as the sounds coming from around her painted a picture of what was happening. She had her hat over her face to give the impression she was asleep to avoid being bothered by most. So far it was working, at least, so that was good.

"Hmm... What to do today..." She mumbled to herself as she laid there, pondering how she should be spending her time now.

Canterlot was more lively then normal, or at least it seemed that way to the excited bat pony. All he could think about was what the envelope contained. Midnight would meander through the streets before he finally caving in. Stopping, he would take a deep breath before reaching for his envelope. Upon opening it, his eyes fixed to its text.

“To whom it may concern,

You are cordially invited to the Royal Guard Ball...” he would read under his breath. “Enclosed is a ticket for yourself and one other..”

The expression on the bat pony’s face quickly turned from that of excitement to one of dread. How would the other guards view him? How would he ever find a date? Why was a mere Specialist invited to such a prestigious event? He felt faint as these thoughts ran through his head. He needed to sit down.

As he sat, Midnight’s eyes would widen as he realized what had just happened. He stood up quickly and turned around. “Oh my gosh, I am sooo sorry. Are you ok?”

Yiska simply laid there, frowning a bit as it sounded like someone was approaching. Well, pretending to be asleep usually made them leave before bothering her. Unfortunately, it seemed it wasn't working this time. Especially as the pony sat on her. She shot up as he got off of her and asked if she was okay. She glared over at him while adjusting her hat before speaking.

"Hey man, watch where you're going! I assume your eyes work, go ahead and use them." She grumbled, wiping herself off. "Whatever, I'm fine, just be more careful next time." With that said, she sighed and stretched herself out. Seemed she had been laying there a bit too long anyways.

As Midnight noticed her eyes and the tone of her voice, he felt ashamed and looked away for a moment. With a deep breath, he would try to smile as he had an idea. "I...um..." he would say before clearing his throat. "Allow me to make it up to you. How would you like to go to dinner, er breakfast now I guess, with me? My treat and you can pick anyplace you want." He would take one more deep breath as he closed his eyes. "I'm Midnight Oil by the way. I truly am sorry. I think we got off on the wrong hoof."

"Mmm, well, I'm not about to turn down some free food." She shrugged, finishing up her stretches and  humming slightly as she thought about where to go now. "Honestly not picky, as long as it tastes good. Guess we'll just go this way then."

The bat took to the air as she began heading towards a place she liked in the past, listening to her surroundings as she went so she didn't run into anything. "Name's Yiska Noctis. Don't worry, I've had worse scrapes." She sighed.

Midnight Oil would nod in agreement before taking flight as well. He would keep only a few feet behind her, amazed by how she was able to navigate so well without the use of her eyes. The bat pony would watch every twitch of her ears as hey seemed to guide her, as he himself would try to listen for the sounds guiding her, but could not.

"Worse scrapes?" he would ask as he continued to follow. "I bet I take the title for most embarrassing though....So, what's the name of the place we're going?"

"Well, I didn't figure out this whole navigation thing instantly, especially once I started adding obstacles. Now I'm an acrobat." She chuckled, starting to fly backwards to face Midnight while still deftly avoiding any obstacles in her path. Her ears were pointed towards her path as she continued, twitching to pick up every bit of sound they could in an attempt to not miss anything that could get in her way. It was the practiced ease of someone who had been doing it for a long time. "Just a diner I like. Think the owner is named Moe or something. Can't exactly read the sign."

Midnight would keep his eyes on Yiska’s ears and how they would move to guide her. He found it intriguing, so much so that he closed his eyes for a moment only to have to reopen them before running into something.

”I see...er understand,” he would correct. “So your an acrobat? That’s an interesting job. I’m a lunar guard myself.,” he said as the approached the dinner.

“A guard, huh? That’s cool. Not sure I could handle just standing around all night though.” She shrugged, landing by the building and feeling her way to the door. Thankfully, it was one that could be pushed open from both sides, so she walked in without issue to greetings from the waitress who guided them to an empty booth.

“So, you got a hot date, Yiska?” The waitress asked as she levitated a pad and pencil out to take orders. Yiska gave a snort at that as she took her seat before answering.

“Right, if that’s what you call a guy sitting on you and buying food to make up for it. I’ll take a coffee and some blueberry pancakes.” She chuckled as the waitress turned to take Midnight’s order.

Midnight would land and follow Yiska into the dinner. He would take his seat in the booth and blush when the waitress asked about being on a date. He wound blush once again as she mentioned the real reason they where there.

”I’ll have the strawberry banana pancakes and a strawberry smoothie.” He would say looking at Yiska waiting for the waitress to leave. “So...do...do you go on many dates here? I...um...” he would put his hood up to his face in embarrassment. “Would you like to go to the ball with me?” He blurted out. “And maybe turn today into a proper date...” he said meekly.

"On a date, no, but I come here fairly often." She shrugged, freezing as he asked if she wanted to go to the ball with him. What ball? Was there a ball today? Yiska was so confused she fell silent for a while, her mouth moving with no words coming out. The diner as a whole mostly continued as they were, aside from one of the nearby tables, which had turned to watch.

"What ball are you even talking about? I mean, sure I guess, but I have no idea what you're talking about." The bat said, still confused by his sudden question.

Midnight put his hoof up to his face in embarrassment. How would she have known. He would chuckle nervously as he realized he was making a foal of himself.

”Oh...I...um....it the Royal Equestrian Guard Ball and it’s in a few days. I have a plus one ticket and I was wondering if you would like to come? It’s actually what I was reading when I...um accidentally sat on you.”

”As for the other part of going on a date today....I’d like to get to know you...if you want that is...”

Yiska fell silent again, though this time more in thought than surprise or confusion. Eventually she shrugged and nodded to him.

“Sure, got nothing else going on then. And sure, I’ll hang with you today.” She said before the food arrived and the waitress placed the silverware in her grasp.

Midnight gave a fangy but nervous smile. "It will be a fun day...I hope." He would chuckle nervously.

Midnight would watch as the waitress placed the silverware in her hooves. His attention would quickly be drawn away as his own food would be placed before him. He would wait for her to take the first bite to be polite before biting into his.

"So, do you get to go to formal events often?" he would ask, trying to make conversation as they ate.

“Yeah, here’s hoping.” Yiska said with a kind of teasing smirk. With that out of the way, she began to eat her food.

“Not really. Got into the gala once though.” She shrugged as she ate, mostly focused on her food. Seemed she was pretty hungry. “What, you been to this stuff before?”

Midnight would sigh as he took another bite of his food. “As much as I hate to say this....no. I’ve never been to a ball or gala before.”

Taking another bite, he would have a thought. “Um, Yiska,” Midnight would say with inquisition in his voice, “So, did your other sense get stronger like your hearing? Like you sense of smell?”

Yiska hummed slightly at his response, shrugging. Guess it’d be a pretty new experience for both of them. That’s fine. She stopped again when he started asking about her sense of smell, turning his direction before answering.

“I dunno, maybe? I got nothing to compare it to, but it doesn’t help that much usually with what I need to do. Smelling biscuits doesn’t help me avoid walls.” She shrugged again before she kept eating.

  • 2 weeks later...

Midnight really didn't know how to respond. He felt ashamed for even asking such a question now that it had escaped his muzzle. "I...um..." before he would return to his meal. He could not help but feeling awkward at the table. The whole situation could be summed up the same way. As he finished his own food, he would wave over the waitress. A fresh banana cream pie had caught his eye. He would motion to the waitress to move in close and whisper to her to bring over a slice for each of them. He had hoped to surprise Yiska, though she could probably hear him whisper the desert order.

Quickly, she would bring the slices of pie over to them, as well as the check.

Yiska kept eating, not really paying attention to what Midnight was doing. When he eventually started saying things again, albeit quietly, her ears turned towards the sound. She didn't really respond to it though, figuring whatever he had actually ordered would probably be good. And it certainly smelled like it. She smirked a bit as she was directed to the new food item, having finished her other food already, and started to eat it too.

"Thanks, tastes pretty good." She said while she ate, smiling a bit over at him. She wasn't real sure what to talk about right now, with all this good food right now.
