Character Summary:

Arnica's birth was an event of mixed emotions for her parents. She was the first child to be born after three successive miscarriages, and her parents were ecstatic that fate had allowed them a foal of their own after the grief of so much loss. Their happiness would be short-lived; however, as Arnica's mother soon after passed away due to medical complications brought on by the birth. While hit hard by yet another loss, her father was more than capable of taking on the task of raising Arnica himself.

As she began to grow up, Arnica became fascinated with the workings of the living creatures of Equestria, pony and otherwise. Even outside of school, she would often be found in the library studying the biology of various plants and animals. When she discovered an entry on the flower that was her namesake, and its supposed property of accelerating the healing process for several types on injuries, she decided she wanted to be a doctor when she grew up. Even though it was a fillyhood dream, and she had no real grasp of how she might accomplish such a goal, one of her friends would give her the perfect opportunity to test how real her dream might be.

It was during recess one day that her blue-coated unicorn friend, Stormsong, provided the chance for Arnica to prove her knowledge. Stormsong had, for reasons unknown, climbed into a tree near the school. Arnica went rushing to her friend's aid upon seeing her fall from the tree and land on the ground, hard, on her leg. In her panic, she nearly drew on blank on everything she had been studying up to that point, but the obvious need for help cleared away the fog, and she was able to identify a nasty sprain in leg her friend had fallen on. Drawing on her magical power, and the want to help her injured friend, Arnica was able to mostly restore the leg to its previous functionality. Just like her namesake flower, she had managed to speed up the healing process of an injury.

The accompanying flash of light drew not only Arnica and her friend's attention, but the attention of nearly everypony else on the playground as well. When she looked back, Arnica saw that her cutie mark, and eight-petalled flower on top of a red cross, had appeared. She would later discover that her mark represented her ability to speed up the healing process of various injuries, especially sprains, strains, and bruises. This talent with her magic, and the knowledge of life sciences she wielded, was more than enough for her to qualify for medical work. However, when the time came for her to choose an area to practice in, she moved to Solstice Heights rather than stay in her home town. Her reasoning was that Canterlot had enough trained doctors, and her abilities would be most appreciated and, more importantly, needed, elsewhere.

To this day, Arnica holds a special place in her heart for flowers, especially the species of her namesake, and always takes care to have fresh floral arragements in her office. She also likes to travel, although she does so rarely, and takes care to warn current and potential patients of her absences well in advance. She has a particular dislike of rain, since it makes things slippery, and therefore easier for ponies to hurt themselves on. She also has no patience for actions that recklessly disregard the safety of any living creatures, especially when such actions actually cause injuries. Even so, she is incredibly kind-hearted, and will do her best to assist those who need help, no matter how they got into their situations.
