Character Summary:

Growing up, Quillsilver was the kind of foal to always give her parents the most unexpected of surprises, mostly concerning her developmental level. She learned to speak very early in life compared to her peers, and absolutely loved to talk about things; to describe them in perfect detail. She was also very curious, always wanting to know what words meant, or what word a pony would use to replace other smaller words. It soon became apparent that she needed to learn how to read if her parents were ever going to hope to keep up with how much she seemed to want to learn.

To their dismay, teaching their daughter how to read not only didn't sate her curiosity, but caused it to grow even further. By the time she had started going to school, Quillsilver had gotten more than bored with the foal's books she had been allowed to borrow from the library over the years. The amount of reading she had done as a foal, and her curiosity about words and language in general, gave her quite an extensive vocabulary relative to her peers, a fact she was often ridiculed for. At first the insults and foul words thrown her way affected her greatly, causing her to lose focus on her studies. As she grew into a filly; however, she learned to use the very thing she was taunted for to her advantage, often confusing unwitting bullies into downtalking themselves with words they didn't understand.

When the opportunity rose for her to enter the school spelling bee, she was more than ecstatic to take part in it, finally able to put her accumulated knowledge to the test. The early rounds of the contest were painfully simple for Quillsilver, using words she had familiarized herself with years before. Even as the contest progressed toward its close, she was the favorite of almost everypony to win during that year from her displays of sheer knowledge. However, she knew that the final round was going to be a challenge, even for herself, since there would be ponies not only from Hoofington, but from many other areas of Equestria as well.

It didn't take long for the contestants in the final round to dwindle down to three or four, but from that point, the battle became a long grind of spelling endurance. It was only a matter of time before somepony made a careless mistake and was eliminated, and Quillsilver was determined that that pony would not be her. Slowly, but surely, mistakes were made and the contest narrowed down to the final two; Quillsilver and a colt from Cloudsdale. They both fought on as ferociously as they could while spelling words, but still neither of them gave in to their mental fatigue. At long last, the colt was given a word, and just from the look on his face, she could tell that he didn't know how to spell it. He gave it his best effort, but to no avail, and he was sent off stage.

Now the only thing Quillsilver needed to do was spell the word that he had missed, and she would be victorious; officially the best speller her age out of hundreds that had participated. The problem was, she wasn't exactly sure she knew how to spell what the colt had missed either. She stood on stage, asking for etymology, use in a sentence, anything that might help her remember the word, doing all she could to buy herself time. Finally, she closed her eyes, thought had about the word she had been given, and spoke the first letters that came to her mind, each one reverberating through her whole being. With the last letter, she opened her eyes and noticed a flash coming from somewhere behind her, but she couldn't worry about that now. If she hadn't spelled that word correctly, the contest would go on, and she didn't know just how much longer she could last.

To her great relief, not only had she won the contest, but that flash she had seen had been the appearance of her cutie mark! She had always been interested in writing her own books before, and upon seeing the page of parchment and quill that made up her cutie mark, Quillsilver decided that she would become a famous author one day. Deep down, she knew that it was always the occupation that would best suit her, with how good she was with spelling and grammar. What made her all the more proud was that she had found her special talent, found her place in the world, with the very thing that had gotten her so much flak from her classmates.

Once she was finished with school, she opened a small bookstore in Hoofington, starting out only with her personal collection of books for sale. Her goal was to spread the joys of literature to as many ponies as she could, while using the source of income to sustain herself until she was a published author and had her own books being sold by others. While she has been largely unsatisfied with the results of her writing, and thus has not bothered sending any pieces to a publisher, she remains confident that some day, she will have a masterpiece worth sharing with the rest of Equestria.

Until that time, she remains the happy owner of a steadily growing bookstore, constantly employing her best efforts to bring in more customers, especially from the younger generations. She holds particular distaste for those ponies that absolutely refuse to read, and many forms of poor writing and speech that she believe are caused by such disregard for literature. Some of these are the very same things the bullies of her youth were guilty of, such as incorrect grammar, misuse of words due to lack of understanding, and redundancy. Other pet peeves of hers include paradoxes, plot holes, and phrases that she feels are utterly worthless and a waste of words, such as "to be honest", "you know", or "needless to say".
