A picture I drew based on this thread. Of course Martini is very cheerful, she is doing the job she loves at her favorite location (the Gallopocus Islands). Updated her look slightly with this image as I wasn't ever entirely satisfied with it before, especially her tail, which I felt was too thin. Not a major difference though, all in the mane and tail, colors and body and cutie mark is the same.

I enjoyed doing this pic, played with the background some so it deviates from the standard FiM background but I like how it came out. Also altered unicorn magic some visually and actually like this more than the appearance on the show (also quicker to do).

Awesome stuff! The new magic effect looks good! Don't suppose I could ask you how it's done?

I love how well the background turned out, despite how simple it is. Did you do the clouds yourself, or are they from the show?

I used the lightest color of her eyes (the highlights) as a guide since it looks like a unicorn's magic aura is the same as their eye color (purple for Twi, blue for Rarity). I set the brush to screen on a normal layer to do the glow. The extra glow on her horn were second strokes using that same screen brush. The sparkles are different, it is the same color but a screen layer with a normal brush (so the opposite of what I did for the horn).

As for the clouds, I used pictures from the show for reference, but I drew them myself.

Lovely picture, I really love it. you did a great job on the clouds.

I've always seen it as their glow is taken from their cutie mark - but their eyes are also often the same color as their cutie mark. But it's really a matter of preference. :)

I'm guessing that's some kind of hibiscus flower behind her ear? (definitely gives a Hawaiian feel to it.)

She looks like she's in quite a hurry. The tracks on the ground were my first visual clue that she wasn't about to run headlong into the stand, but it did make me wonder who had gone that way before her.

(I don't mean to be contrary, but I did notice that Celestia's magic glow is yellow while her eyes are purple. I suspect you could probably use whatever color fits best though. I mean, really... its magic. :) )

I get the impression from this pic that the gallopacous threats were pretty awesome. :)

I would wager that the show's magic effects are exactly the same to make in flash as they would be in photoshop or gimp. I'm pretty sure they use a simple "inner glow" layer effect on a solid, mostly/totally transparent shape. (such as a black splotch set to screen, since the layer effects can use different blend styles than the layer itself, just look under advanced blending options. Here's an example file: knhauber.phpwebhosting.com/scraps/fim_glow_thing.psd

I don't think she looks like she was going to run into the stand regardless. :/ As for magic, it could be based on the cutie mark instead of the eye color. It is just hard to say.

I don't think it looks like she's going into the stand, either - she just looks like she's prancing happily, not going at any full tilt. Her head's high, and her tail and mane are bouncy, not stretched behind her.

I'm not trying to knock the work here. If it read like that, I apologize. I'm just trying to relate my viewing experience and the opportunity to chatter about semi-related arting techniques came up too.

She does kind of have a canter/gallop look to her, in that suspension moment between steps, but its hard to distinguish between that and a Pinkie Pie style bounce.

But overall, this picture made me wish I hadn't missed out on the ponywalk threads. :)

She is cantering, that was the idea. Being in that in-between moment when all four legs are in the air. I wanted to show how she was happy with what was going on. More than that I am curious what people thought of the glow; mainly I wanted to try something else for it.

The tracks do tell some pony did go that way before, yes.

I think it works well with the background. I mean, the glow effect from the show works in the show because everything is flat shapes and maybe a few gradients, but once you start getting painterly with backgrounds, it doesn't hurt to step the special effects up a notch too. :)
