In a facility I reference as the Earthside Labs, there are several ongoing projects, one of which is simply referred to as a "pony project". The purpose of it is fairly obvious, though the plan for getting there is kind of inhumane. While the rest of the labs still crack down on telekinesis and flight, the base genome has already been completed, resulting in a (steadily increasing, as the tests continue) number of specimens of an intelligent species running about. The specimens are meant to resemble their prototypes from the show, but for obvious reasons don't have their personalities, skills, or memories. This was also initially supposed to facilitate the disposal of unneeded intermediate batches, so as not to require all staff to be robotic, but it didn't quite help. Even if they don't have magic or flight, and generally require to be cared for...

..ahem. Long story short, the Labs had to extend the northern housing wing twice this year.
