[Canterlot]Pony Joe's[OPEN]

The sun rose over Canterlot, and made a lot of things look nice and pretty. Pony Joe, however, did not see these things. He was too busy fixing his apron and hat on for work. As he trudged downstairs he flicked on the lights in the store. Anypony outside would see the store spring into life as Joe turned the sign on the door to "Open", and headed back behind the counter, where he began to practise what he would say to customers as a greeting.

"Welcome to Pony Joe's. We're absolutely awesome...No that doesn't sound right....Welcome to Pony Joe's. The finest donuts in Canterlot...maybe." Joe said to himself as he adjusted his hat and waited for any sign of customers to appear.

Misty Magic was taking a trip down memory lane that led her back to her birthplace: Canterlot. The young mare had some good times here, and some not so good times as well. The yellow unicorn was a regular at Pony Joe's in her younger years where she often came to drown her sorrows in a donut and a lemonade. Many times after being teased by her schoolmates for her misfiring magical spells, she'd come to Pony Joe's where the smiling unicorn stallion would always find a way to cheer her up. She hoped that Pony Joe was still running the donut shop since he had been one of her only true friends in Canterlot, as least, until that fateful day when her mixed up magic saved the town from a rampaging dragon. Her schoolmates had witnessed her performing the spell, so they cheered with joy. However, most of the adults of Canterlot could not believe that the yellow unicorn who had failed the entrance exam to the School of Magic had done such an incredible feat of magic. All that didn't matter to her now, she was here in Canterlot to have a good time, visit her parents and relax.

Now Misty entered Pony Joe's, happy to see his donut shop was just as she remembered it.

"Pony Joe!" she shouted as she trotted up to the counter. "It's good to see you again! I hope you still remember me. I've been away for a while and I just had to come here to say hello!"

Joe noticed his first customer of the day entering and saying that she knew him. Somehow, she was familiar. "Welcome to Pony Joe's. The heart of Canterlot...no, that still sounds cheesy." he greeted the customer. Only when he looked at her properly did he remember who she was. Well, well, Misty Magic. Long time." he smiled. "I haven't seen you in ages!" Joe proceeded to busy himself behind the counter. "What can I get ya?" he asked.

"I'll have one of your famous pink iced donuts with extra sprinkles and a cup of coffee please," the young unicorn mare said. "Yes Pony Joe, I've been away for a while. After graduating from school. I took the Civil Service exam and have been working at the Post Office in Trottingham ever since. I had to make a new start for myself. I'm still working on my magic though. I know that someday I'll get it right. Just in town to visit and catch up on things. How have you been? I heard there was quite a ruckus here after the Gala.

"One pink donut and coffee comin' up. You want that to go?" Joe smiled and set to work on the coffee machine. "Yeah, I heard about that thing at the Gala. I was working here, though, so I don't know exactly what happened. Here you go. That's, uh, 6 bits." he added, handing a donut and a cup of coffee over the counter. "So...you're a mail pony now?"

Crystal Blade stumbled into the donut shop, bleary eyed and groggy from midnight guard duty the night before. She hadn't gone to bed until pretty late, and hadn't gotten much sleep anyways. "I'll take a large, uh, coffee." She said grumpily, letting out a small yawn, tossing her short silver and gold mane sideways as she stretched her wings upwards.

"I'd like to dine here at the counter, if I may," Misty Magic said with a smile, using her unicorn powers to place 6 bits in front of Pony Joe. "Well, I work in the mail sorting part of the Post Office. We use Pegasus ponies to deliver mail, they're faster and they're better at it than us unicorns, except for this one blonde cross-eyed Pegasus who... "

Misty stopped speaking when the new arrival came. The Pegasus seemed a bit gruff, but the young unicorn was determined to be friendly.

"Hi there! I'm Misty Magic, pleased to meet you! The coffee's excellent here, good choice!"

Babbles hadn't seen this side of noon in longer than she cared to think about. Duty called, however. She had a major meeting with her editor in an hour, and though she'd usually tell the mare to kiss off, they'd meet whenever Babbles chose for them to meet, she'd hooked an unusually high profile lead at the Gala and she needed to play this one right. A cover story. That's what she wanted. And that meant playing by the rules, at least for a little while.

She stepped into line behind a deep blue pegasus and bit back any of her usual rude urges. The huffing and sighing were things she could get away with when she was at her best, when a mere smile and bat of the eyelashes won back the graces of any stallion in sight, but this morning she was far from her peak. The night before had seen her dancing her heart out in the hottest club she could find, celebrating her recent good fortune. Come to think of it, she'd done the same thing the night before. And the night before that. And the night before that.

Babbles groaned and put a hoof to her face, rubbing the bags under her eyes and hoping that a cup of coffee and greasy breakfast would perk her up, soothe her headache, and settle her churning stomach.

"Alright, seat yourself down at the bar and enjoy yourself, Misty." Joe grinned at her. He then busied himself at the coffee machine again for the next customer. "Okay then, that's one large coffee for you. That'll be 2 bits. Do you want that to take away?" he asked the pegasus. "What's up? You look really tired."

Blade nodded hello to the yellow unicorn who was smiling at her brightly. "My name's Blade." She replied as she replied as she rumedged in her saddle bags for bits, and finally finding two. she set them down, satisfied with the small, musical 'clink' they made on the counter. "Nah, I'll drink it here. And, yeah, I sure am tired! I had night patrol... Bleh." Crystal Blade looked behind her as another pony came in to add to the morning rush. She nodded hello, wondering why the newcomer looked so tired too.

Misty was glad to see more customers coming into the donut shop. It was just like old times. She remembered how older ponies would flock to Pony Joe's for breakfast, and how the younger ones would come in droves in the afternoon and evening, just to grab a quick bite and hang out. She pondered this when she heard Blade's reply.

"Night patrol? Sounds interesting, Blade. Did everything go well tonight?"

Misty then turned her attention to the newest customer.

"Good morning, ma'am! I'm Misty Magic, so good to see you!"

Babbles gave a tight smile to the pegasus in front of her, noting that the mare looked just as tired as she felt. Babs didn't recognize her from the bustling night life, and assumed she was either from out of town or a goody two shoes who wouldn't know a good time if it slapped her in the face. Or possibly both.

"G'morning," Babbles grumbled to the yellow unicorn mare, who was entirely too perky for this time of day. In her exhaustion she completely abandoned her aloof, snooty mannerisms and feebly raised a hoof in greeting. "I'm Babbles. Babs. Very tired." She squinted her eyes closed for a moment, even the shop's interior seemed too bright, and for the fifth time since leaving the house, she searched her bag for her sunglasses, hoping against hope they had somehow materialized since she'd stopped to check before entering the shop.

"Alright, enjoy yourself." Joe said cheerfully as he passed Blade her coffee. "You were doing night patrol? No wonder you're tired." He turned to the next customer. "I'm guessing you want a coffee of some description as well? You look exhausted. Maybe a donut to go with that?" he asked, geniuine concern in his voice.

"Night patrol? Sounds interesting, Blade. Did everything go well tonight?"

"You were doing night patrol? No wonder you're tired."

Crystal Blade nodded to both of them. "Nothing exciting happened. Stayed up 'til midnight and didn't even get to arrest any trespassers." She sighed, swirling her coffee with a spoon before taking a few sips. It was hot, and left her tuonge felling slightly bunt. She should probably let it cool for a few minutes.

"Come to think of it, nothing exciting seems to happen lately.."

"I thought everything was exciting in Canterlot!" Misty added before taking another sip of her coffee. "I remember when I used to live here, the royal city always seemed to have something thrilling going on in it. Princess Celestia raising the sun, the Grand Galloping Gala, stuff like that."

Misty wanted to keep pleasant conversation going, but couldn't help noticing many of the patrons of Pony Joe's seemed very tired. Had things changed so much in the city of her birth? Why had she never noticed it before? The unicorn then turned towards Pony Joe.

"Pony Joe, have things changed THAT much while I was away? Has anything new happened with the Princess sisters or the royal family? Has Prince Blueblood chosen a mate yet?"

"Honestly, Misty, I only know rumors. What I hear in the store, see." Joe explained. As far as I know, Prince Blueblood hasn't found a mate yet. He's far too picky, in my opinion. As for the Princess sisters, I don't exactly spend my days at the castle, and I don't think they want to come down here and eat donuts, so I don't know what's going on with them, either." He sighed and made himself a coffee. "Basically, life goes on in Canterlot. The Princesses do...whatever it is they do, and I work here, just as I've done for...I forget how many years."

"Triple espresso soy latte with a touch of mocha, hold the foam," the order spilled from Babbles' mouth with barely a pause between syllables. She nudged past the pegasus in front of her up to the counter. "And a donut would be lovely. Glazed." She sighed, glancing off to the side before adding, as an afterthought, "please."

Her ears flicked toward the perky unicorn who'd greeted her a moment before, then back towards Joe as he answered, always on the alert for a fresh piece of news. Nothing of note from Joe, however. She'd always wondered what sort of gossip swept in and out of his shop without him ever noticing. She kept her expression neutral, nonchalant, practicing her perfected art of feigned disinterest, but listening intently to the conversation around her.

Babbles had things to share, of course. Whether they were true or not mattered very little to her. She decided to wait and see if the pegasus offered up anything. Certainly a royal guard, particularly someone assigned to the night watch would have a tale or two to spin.

"One triple espresso soy latte, touch of mocha, no foam." Joe repeated back the order to memorize it. "And one glazed donut. Coming right up." Making the latte took a little longer than usual, as he had to look through a few cabinets to find the soy milk, and almost put foam on it by accident. Eventually, he passed Babbles a hot cup of latte and a donut. "That'll be, uh, 7 bits. Do you want it to take away?"

Big Time pushed his shades up on his muzzle. It was morning, and there was no better place to go to than Pony Joe’s for breakfast. Though it wasn’t a fancy cuisine restaurant, like the Pegasus stallion usually would be seen eating at, sometimes he just wanted a nice glass of hot tea. It was the perfect way to start the day. Also, since he was visiting Canterlot, he thought it may be good to spend some time in the restaurant he had only been to once before.

Mornings were when Big Time felt his happiest. He’d almost always have gotten a good night’s sleep, so he was fully energized when he woke up. Before the stallion would step hoof out the door, he would gussy-up and wear his sunglasses as well as his best smile. Some of his friends would ask him how he stayed so happy all the time, especially in the mornings. Big Time would always beat around the bush, make claims that life is too short to be groggy. In reality, he would wake up to the thought of bits. He wouldn’t just picture bits, he’d think about how many bits he’s made in his life, how much he has now. It made him smile and put that extra pep in his step. Also, his job required him to be charismatic. A Talent Agent wasn’t going to get anywhere in the industry without a smile and a flattering compliment here and there.

“Good morning Equestrians!†Big Time announced as he stepped through the doors of Pony Joe’s. As he expected, there were already quite a few customers inside, a few looking very sleepy. The stallion trotted up to the counter and sat at the seat next to the cream-colored mare. He waited patiently, letting Pony Joe take the other pony’s orders first.

As Joe passed Babbles her coffee and donut, and sipped on his own coffee, he noticed Big Time entering the shop. "Welcome to Pony Joe's. We have the...you know what? Forget the intro. Nice shades." he remarked. Looks like a city pony. he thought as he took another sip of his coffee. "What can I get you?"

"Thank you, and I would like some green tea if you have any, Mister..." With a pause he lowered his shades a little and peered over them with his dark green eyes, "...Pony Joe, I presume?" Big Time pushed his shades up with a hoof and chuckled, "I've heard a lot about your business. Nothing but good reviews." The blue Pegasus leaned against the counter and looked around. "I gotta say, so far this place is living up to the hype."

Misty Magic took notice of the new blue Pegasus stallion that walked up to the counter. In her young eyes, the sunglass wearing male looked like a knight in shining armor. Noticing the counter stool on the other side of him was empty, Misty quickly jumped into it and then looked at Big Time with a huge, toothy grin.

"Hello there!" she said in a very mature voice. "I'm Misty Magic, are you a newcomer to Canterlot? I haven't see you around here before."

"Green tea?" This was a rare turn of events. Nopony ever asked for green tea from Joe. "Well, I'll see if I have any." Joe said before diving under the counter and rummaging through a box that contained several specialist ingredients. "I think...I have some...here." Joe exclaimed as he pulled out a small packet labled "Green Tea". "This'll take a couple of minutes to prepare. So why don't you have a seat?" Joe set to work cooking up some green tea for this new, strange customer. "I'm honored that you think so highly of my shop." He told the shades-wearing pony. "You sound like a food critic, if you don't mind me saying. Are you some sort of actor?"

"I'll be eating here, Joe, thank you." Babbles levitated her coffee and donut from the counter and carried them with her to a table by the window, making note of Big Time. She had heard of him, but had no idea who any of his clients were. Maybe she'd find out this morning.

She settled in her seat, taking a sip of her coffee, and a nibble of her donut. She smiled to herself and took another sip of the latte. Perfect, as always, and it seemed to instantly lift her spirits.

Babs slung her bag over the back of the chair, lifting a small notebook from inside. She opened it to her notes from the Gala, reading through them as she nursed her latte, checking for anything of note to share with her editor beyond the interview she'd landed with Maximillian Rockefilly himself. Of course, he was Max to her now, she hadn't just managed an interview, she'd turned the evening into a date, and was hoping for another. He was handsome, after all, not to mention well connected and absolutely loaded. Those things mattered. It was a pleasant bonus that they seemed to enjoy each other's company as well.

"Not much of a dancer though," she muttered to herself. "Shame."

"Very close," Big Time answered Pony Joe, "I guess you could say I'm more of an actor-maker. I'm a Talent Agent." The blue pegasus stifled another chuckle.

The mare that sat next to Big Time caught him by surprise. He shifted in his seat so he was facing her. "Oh! Hi there!" He saw her toothy grin and gave one right back. "My name is Big Time, and to answer your question, no. I've been to Canterlot once before on a business trip with my dad. He gave me some bits and let me loose to go buy what I wanted, and I actually came to Pony Joes back then for lunch. I remember it was the first time I'd ever had a hamburger..."

Big Time took a few long blinks behind his shades to stop himself from reminiscing. "Anyway, enough about me, tell me about yourself. Do you live here in Canterlot?"
