Update has been deployed and we should be good to go.

Hi guys, I know it's been a while, but IRL has been crazy in the past few months. I'm sorry for the delay, but I'm popping in real quick to give news of a forum software update before I hand things off.

This is just a notice that I will be deploying a major IPS update on 5-July-2021 around noon EST. This should theoretically be like any other backend update  with no anticipated issues, but given the scope of it, I wanted to give a two week-ish heads up so people can plan around it. If you have important threads you're following or plans to post around that time, I'd recommend keeping local backups just in case.

After I get this sorted there's just a few more housekeeping things that need done and the transition will be complete. Thanks for your understanding everyone!

To answer both questions, probably the world expansions, specifically the Far East setting. I love worldbuilding, probably even more than writing specific stories. Watching the community come together and excitedly gone on about lore, locations, and crafting storylines was a great feeling.

I will try to answer questions regarding the Changing of the Guard announcement here.

Hello Canterlot,

You will have noticed that the site has not been updated in a very long time. My work on site development has not been up to par and you deserve an explanation why. It is no secret that I have had trouble with my health over the past few years. I deal with chronic pain often and I have had a lot of trouble with cognitive tasks, especially those that require leadership and learning.

Further compounding issues, my mother suffered a stroke a few weeks ago. She is doing much better after surgery and intensive care, but will require continued supportive care to ensure that she does not develop complications. My poor health coupled with the necessity to assist with long-term care for my mother have pushed me to the unfortunate realization that I just do not have the mental and physical ability to continue work as site host and developer.

It is thus with great regret that I must tender my resignation as administrator of Canterlot. My anticipated time frame for step down is the end of the year.

What this DOES NOT mean is the sudden termination of the forum or the Discord server or the dissolution of the community.

What this DOES mean is that Canterlot will not receive any further active development from me.

We the staff are currently in the process of developing a transition plan that will minimize stress and hassle for everyone. Keep an eye on the News and Updates subforum and the #announcements Discord channel for updates as they are posted. In the meantime, the Discord and forums will continue to run normally.

Please leave questions and comments HERE and I will do my best to answer them as I am able.

While I will no longer be in charge, I will try to make time and energy available to assist with the transition and perhaps even return to RP as a normal player as I am able. It is my hope that even if I am no longer in charge, you will all continue to carry forward all the lessons that MLP has taught us.

Superhero Name: Firebrand.  Named for his aggressive use of guerilla activism, Firebrand is hellbent on taking down corruption wherever he finds it.

Powers: Top-tier athletic conditioning, lightning reflexes, expert marksmanship, expert hand to hand combatant, stealth and agility, gadgeteer and explosives expert.

Weaknesses: No superpowers.  In spite of his martial training and lightning reflexes, Grayson is not an enhanced individual and is thus vulnerable to physical or magical harm when confronting those with powers.  To compensate, Grayson focuses on stealth and agility; if he does his job right, no one will see him coming.  Ataxium grenades and explosive arrows containing the magic-inhibiting agent provide a plan B against powered individuals who would do him harm.

Alias: Cpl. Grayson Steelfeather.

Backstory: Grayson grew up poor in the Base level of Talonopolis.  His parents worked the factories, as did his many brothers and sisters when they came of age.  Despite the advertisement that hard work would eventually lead to upward mobility, Grayson grew jaded with the promise of a better life after watching generations grow up, grow old, and die in the same squalor that they had been in for decades.  When he became of age, he decided to enlist in the military, hoping that the government pension would help him bring his family out of poverty.

Notable Allies: (awaiting discussion)

Notable Personal Villains: Morianna Razorclaw.  Firebrand has relentlessly pursued her for years, but proof of her corruption of government and populace has thus far eluded his grasp.  Still, he knows something is up with Razorclaw and will not stop until he finds it.

Also can include anyone whom he has executed press hatchet jobs upon or whom he has publicly humiliated with his investigative reporting.

General Notability: “Firebrand” is well known in Talonopolis as a rabble-rouser and agent provocateur.  Discounted by the upper class and revered by the working class, his articles on wealth inequality and government corruption are infamous for their inflammatory nature, fiery oration, and his exposure of blatant corruption has led to the public humiliation of many a minor patrician.  Thus he is on the blacklist for many griffons with power.  Equestrians on the whole are either unaware of his antics or largely ambivalent of something that does not really occur in their country.

Superhero/Supervillain Name: Morpheus.  Daedalus does not use any sort of costume or catchphrase and does not purposely conceal his identity; however in most underground circles he is simply known by the moniker Morpheus for his ability to manipulate the mind.

Powers: Extremely intelligent and highly practiced in the use of dark magicks, including but not limited to mind manipulation and suggestion, illusions and conjuring, teleportation and portals, and fear and charm spells.  Recent pursuits include study in necromancy, reality-warping, and summoning, among other magical taboo subjects.

Weaknesses: Physical harm.  Most of Daedalus’ tricks involve avoiding harm in combat by deceiving, disorienting, and the decimating his foes.  He can also throw up shields and blink to escape danger.  His physique, however, is merely average and somewhat frail compared to the superpowered enemies he normally confronts.

Alias: Daedalus of House Sardonyx in Maretonia, a freelance mage and ritualist.  Daedalus is a charming, handsome unicorn who is highly educated and extremely dangerous when cornered.  The suave and polite demeanor hides the magnitude of his powers well and can open vulnerabilities for his manipulation techniques.  Despite the nature of his abilities, Daedalus still tries to maintain some semblance of a moral compass.  He sees evil in the world and actively works where he can to undermine it, even if at times his actions are legally questionable.

Backstory: The son of a Maretonian politician, Daedalus was groomed from birth to enter the Maretonian court and play the games that would keep his family in their good graces.  After he discovered his affinity for dark magic, however, he left home in self-imposed exile, as he knew that following that legacy would bring grave consequences upon both himself and his family.  He now travels as a mage for hire while practicing his craft and gathering allies for the day that he might return to Maretonia to face the Assembly.

Notable Allies: (awaiting discussion)

Notable Personal Villains: The Assembly of Heads in Maretonia.  Though they bring stability to Kastrot, the Assembly is known for its oligarchic tendencies and willingness to go to great lengths to eliminate perceived threats to their power.  It is only a matter of time before they catch wind of Daedalus’ activities abroad, decide he is a liability, and act to eliminate him.

Other villains may include anyone who has fallen victim to his powers, lost artifacts/intel to him while working for a rival employer, or companies/people wanting to tie up loose ends after a job completed by Morpheus.

General Notability: Morpheus’ magical prowess is well-known in the back channels and the underground; he is the one you call to handle problems that non-superpowered individuals cannot, or alternatively problems that need to be dealt with discretely.

User Relevant Change Log

• Personal conversation management improvements:
  • Can now filter personal conversations to just read/unread.
  • Can now move multiple personal conversations into a different folder at once.
  • Can search by recipient/sender name.
• When the search index is being rebuilt, a message is now shown on the search results page to indicate why results may not be complete.
• The placeholders that display on date/time inputs (e.g. "HH:MM") can now be translated.
• Rebuilding the search index, and rebuilding posts after a 3.x upgrade now processes newest posts first for a more user-friendly experience after upgrading.

In the wake of last week's incident, this is friendly a reminder for everyone to please rotate your passwords for Canterlot regularly and ensure that they do not overlap with other sites and accounts.  For additional security, it is also advisable to regularly rotate your email account password.  We have updated our site software with the most up to date security patches, but there is still a need for individual users to safeguard their own account information.

Passwords may be changed via the Overview tab in the Account Settings page.  You may access this using the drop-down menu from your Display Name in the upper right corner of the site UI.  If you have forgotten your password, please use the automated password recovery tool at sign-in.

IPS has updated the software.  This should fix the image display bugs, but please give it at least 24 hours to update the DNS caches.  In the mean time please do not delete or restructure your logs or posts as it will likely be unnecessary.

I've gone ahead and cycled some ACP settings.  Let's see if this works.

What image hosts are producing broken images?

I'm trying to track down the issue but I am having trouble reproducing it.  I know that it does happen from time to time because it has happened to me before, it is just very inconsistent.  I'll post an update if I figure something out.

The +Create tap at the top of the page doesn't list the option, no tab for Blogs shows up on my profile, and no option appears on the Blog section of the site. I've tried on both Google Chrome and Windows 8, and I'm on the standard theme. I also tried both web browsers on my work laptop with no luck. Both computers are 64-bit.

I do have the option to comment on blogs, if that helps at all. 

I believe the blog permissions have been adjusted, but if they have not, please send me a PM so that I can ensure this is done.

Yeah if you accidentally hit spoiler tags they will nest inside eachother with no hope of erasing the tag.

It may do the same with quotations too

I dont know if its the forum software, my browser (google chrome on Linux) but sometimes it will act funny.

This time seems fine but I had it bug out once and I wanted to artificially create the scenario I was in

The delete key will likely give you more consistent performance.  Try this before we attempt to apply software-level fixes.

What's with that?

Technically CKEditor should support auto-embed, but it apparently REALLY doesn't like tinypic.  Try imgur first, just posting the raw image URL and see if that works.

Please note the "Tx" button in the editor pane.  This will strip all formatting from the selected text and is the surest way to disable formatting when it needs to be done.  I have taken the liberty of correcting your About Me profile tab for you while testing this.

Yup.  That was a permissions oversight.  Should be fixed now.

Report any bugs and issues you encounter in this thread.  This includes missing features, any weirdness with permission masks, or broken functionality.

Bug reports should contain the following:

1. A concise description of the problem.  Summarize the issue in one sentence so we know how to generally categorize and work on the problem.
2. Detailed steps to reproduce the issue.  This can take the form of a bullet-point list and can be as detailed as necessary to describe how to trigger the issue.
3. Your computer's operating system and whether it is 32- or 64-bit.
4. Web browsers that this issue occurs on.  You may also include any plugins or extensions you think may interact with the issue.
