  1. I'm toying with a concept for a story and was wondering how many times it's been done so far (I don't want to just be the latest in a string of 'copy cat' stories even if I came up with my idea independently) In Short: One of twilight's spells misfires and turns back time --- for Rainbow Dash. Dash find herself a filly again and has to cope until Twilight finds a reversal spell. But, it's not "coping" for Dash, she doesn't remember ever being an adult and the others decide for now the best thing is to treat her like a normal filly "just in case" twilight cant reverse it. As a filly, Dash meets and befriends the CMC, which is rather awkward for Scootaloo, and also develops a crush on Pip. When twilight finally does find a cure, Dash is forced to decide between staying a filly and being friends with the CMC (and more with Pip) or whether to 'grow up' and rejoin the Mane 6 and be 'more than friends' with... someone else...
  2. This. Unless your shipping Twilight or Spike or Luna, honestly everyone already knows everyone. One of the reasons I see most Dash+Wonderbolts shipping (practically the only kind I personally write) work is simply because she doesnt really know them, and in-canon only has met them twice both for short periods. I mean, I'm a hopeless romantic and I love a good story, but over all it's kinda hard to know somone for probably 5-10 years and all of a sudden love them (discounting life-changing experiances, I mean if X risks their life to save Y and almost dies, then Y might feel a little differently about X...)
  3. If the HDD itself isnt damaged you can recover them. You just need an "External HDD case" so you can access the drive over USB. I'm a fan of DropBox myself, though I'm playing with Ubuntu One too... There's also Skydrive (MS) And those are just the ones I know of off the top of my head... Never use cloud as primary storage, but always use it as a backup for things you REALLY dont want to lose (and some, like Dropbox not only let you back up, but sync them across numerous PCs/smartphones/etc)
  4. I understand how you feel, OP, this site is a little slow on verious topics, but I'm sure there are some you'll find interesting if you look, the forum is over half non-RP (which is the whole reason I joined, honestly I doubt I'll do much RP here lol) If nothing else head over to ED and read some FFs, that's what I do when I have nothing better to be doing ^_^
  5. I actually first dismissed this as silly, then I remembered that Equestria is a world where you dig 10 random holes and at least 1 will be filled with Gems... This would also explain why he can make a living in the desert where there is very little to do... ...though what kind of treasure is there in the desert? I know there's gold/Silver in some places but it's not been addressed how valuable these are/arent and how rare they are/arent (after all gemstones seem to be something like $25/1lbs bag --- just enough to keep a lot of people from frivolousness adding hundreds of them to everything they own)
  6. "Shipping" is short for "Relationshiping" and it simply means putting two characters into a relationship. While technically it can be friendship, usually it is romantic (yiff doesnt always enter into it, it can be just two characters turning red and getting all quiet around each other while giveing sideways glances and smiling) Better explanation, as always, here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Shipping
  7. Actually "mage" is the shortened form of "Magician" but I see your point. It just hit me how amusing it is that we're digging so deep into science to explain a tv show about candy-colored talking ponies... lol (not that it's a bad thing, just amusing) I love the idea that the suits are made to collect and discharge static! (as awesome as it is, being able to control lightning is kinda a game-breaker in most stories) Though at the same time, I point out also in Luna Exclipsed where Dash just kicked the cloud and it created lightning, of course this could have been specifically because it was a "thunder head" cloud isntead of a "rain cloud" or the white clouds created from high-speed flight... The issue with Dash's trail though is she can go from a stand-still and leave it, there is no opportunity to create waver vapor unless she keeps herself perpetually wet... (though on this note I want to point out she did almost exactly the trick you mentioned in "boast busters" - flying through clouds, collecting moisture, then causing light to reflect off it to make a rainbow over her head) Of course on the other paw, we dont know what the relative humidity is in ponyville, it's quite possible that she has an invisible cloud of moisture floating around her at all times specifically for this occurrence...
  8. Get a DVR! Dont the ponies mean that much to you!? (lol! j/k)
  9. I dont talk about it, but then I dont talk to people much. I Do have pony playing in my car most of the time (often with the windows open) and when $$$ allows, I am planning to order a few pony shirts and a Rainbow Dash messenger bag for my tablet... So... it's a bit of both. I'm not open but I dont hide it. If somone openly asked me if I liked it, I would tell them "no, I dont like it - I LOVE IT!" and likely proceed to rattle off every awesome thing rainbow dash has ever done (lol) Online personally I think doesnt count, it's so anonymous people will admit to ANYTHING no matter how good/bad/sick it is because they can always either leave a site or just change their usernames. But, on that note, I openly and soemtimes proudly state I'm a Brony and a Furry, so...
  10. lol. nonono! the trope your looking for is: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EveryoneIsBi That way it's still acceptable! lol I just wanted to point out that iirc, fimfiction has 100% open, you can post a story "teh raenbo ponez wints to teh zoo" and it's avalible for everyone, while ED put all FF though several pre-readers to weed out the lower-quality ones. (Though it takes a long time and a lot of good stories are missed, like "muffins")
  11. I dont have any direct experiance with little kids (small family) but it's interesting what I've noticed based on numerous sites is this: -for the most part, anyone under 8 doesnt watch the show (or cant follow it) -from 8 to 12, it's a random mix of boys and girls, though mostly girls because boys are in the "I'm MANLY!" phase -from 13 plus again its fairly random but the concentration of males rises the older the demographic gets... I think part of the reason it's not more popular, in genneral, is because it's run on some obscure cable channel that aparently very few people get and fewer watch...
  12. Ok, *technically* this is for a fanfic, but I might roleplay this character and I figured you RPers might be more helpful at brainstorming what the character's tallent is... (ironically has has a cutie mark already but...) Name: Dunes Gender: Stallion Age: Adult Species: Earth Pony Home: Aridia (desert) Color: Sandy brown Cutie Mark: 3 sand dunes Temperment: Easy going, kind, helpful Relationships: currently caring for a mysterious slightly aggressive and arrogant mare who lost her memory... is developing into a full-blown relationship (if you want the full story, you'll just have to wait till I finish the fanfic! ;P lol) Cothing: occasionally wears a sandy or white cloak/mask when out in the desert to keep sand out of his fur and various orifices Despite all this, I have no idea what his tallent is! Obviously it has something to do with living in the desert and something to do with sand dunes, but... I'm at a bit of a loss... Thoughts?
  13. I have 1 friend on a forum that's a brony, and 2 that like the show but dont *love* it... In Real Life, my DM's a brony (makes for some hilarious in-jokes during games) but nobody else... (well nobody I know, there's a girl I know at a local shop who loves anime, cartoons, and furries, so I suspect she might be, but I've not had a chance to ask her...) It's a lonly life for a brony in a rural small down in the bible belt...
  14. wow... a lot to take in... A few thoughts since I'm not going to necro those old threads... Unicorn magic being a force of nature that is controlled through will... I just have to quote "Magic, magic, do as you will" Also, this may seem obvious, but who says the spellbooks ARENT incantations and Twilight/Trixie/etc arent just reciting them in their head? (possibly so the studio can circumvent 'Gratuitous Latin' during production) The idea that a unicorn's magic resides in it's horn makes me seriously wonder if a non-unicorn could perform magic using a unicorn horn (either by er... removing.. one from a live unicorn or by taking the horn from a deceased unicorn) This also makes me wonder about other kinds of magic such as invoking the raw primal elements (earth/fire/wind/water), clarical magic (essentially 'praying' for an effect), or even Words of Power (in short speaking the language of the Gods and commanding things to happen - words that cannot even be properly pronounced without training and ar usually signified in stories/games/etc by bracketing in exclamation marks (such as the famous !LIVE!, !PAIN!, and !DEATH! from, iirc Dungeons and Dragons) Of course this is all speculation since none of what I'm babling about occurs in Canon (except possibly the mental recitation of spells) But it's certainly food for thought (and fanfics...)
  15. Interesting idea, hopefully something will pop up to back this up since so far honestly no earth-pony has shown what I would consider a major "nature connection" unless you count AJ's herding skills, and it's implied that's more because she's a cowgirl rather than because she's an earth-pony... Not sure - I'm thinking that might have given him some for of magic though since his fire is green not yellow like the other 2 dragons. Also spike *can* use his fire as, well, fire. He' sbeen shown to burn things several times without the "magic" effect and without them getting sent to celestia, so I'm thinking it's something he has to trigger himself rather than an innate ability... Yes, this much is clear. I'm just curious how capable unicorns are at using non-inate magic (like snails lighting his horn) because that opens a world of possibilities compared to "your magic relates to your tallent" I'll have to check, I thought I saw another pegasus do it before, which would mean it's an inate ability... Also the lightning - we see Dash summoning lightning from the cloud in "Luna Eclipsed" (while in "Friendship is Magic Pt 1" she summons Rain from a similar cloud) which makes me wonder if they have much more fine-control over what happens to clouds becides just moving them around and standing on them... Thank you, and I appoligize if I seem to be nit-picking, I'm just trying to fully understand the system that's in place before I go off breaking it and fixing it my own way lol I thought this area was purely for RP stuff (as opposed to trying to figure out the official rules of magic), my appologies for sticking the thread in the wrong board >.< OOO my thread is getting bounced all around! lol (again, sorry for the wrong place, I thought as I'm asking about the official Hasbro/FiM rules it went in the "universe" discussion)
  16. No, that's jut silly - The buildings are OBVIOUSLY TARDISes! lol I avoid spoilers like the plague, but I look forward to seeing it
  17. Odd that their knee vanishes unless sitting lol, I hadn't noticed that. I'll take that into account when I draw Dunes (my own OC) Thank you
  18. I'm not 100% sure just what "magic" earth ponies have, what little I've seen seems to just be common sense... I'm not sure about the dragons, though - spike's fire seems to send stuff to celestia, but other dragons in the series lack such a skill. I'm wondering if it's a specific spell he casts before he does it (Making him a minor mage?) That's a similar explanation to what a friend of mine said "All unicorns can perform magic, it's just harder for (non-mages)" citing how much trouble it was for the unicorn to make his horn glow --- but that he COULD do it. Of course this then begs the question of where the limits lie... and do they change per unicorn? the Princesses are downright Reality Warpers (but this could be due to their being Alicorns/Pegacorns or godesses) Could twilight do the same with more effort? Could Snips+Snails? (though the latter I think the required effort might kill them...) Not just smoke though - lightning too ("best night ever" when they first fly out in "reality" and also in Dash's "dream") The counter-argument I've seen though is "if pegasai can make clouds, why do they make them at the weather factory?" my guess for this is "pegasai magic is just like all other magic, enough of it wears the pony out, so it's better to just mass-produce them than to force each pegasus to make them themselves" Watch filly dash when she first makes a sonic rainboom, her mane literally turns to rainbows (though this is a "memory/dream" so arguably it might just be how Dash envisioned it) It seems rather long to just be the blur from her tail, imo, however at the same time, I've never taken the time to really compare the lengths... (also doesn't account for the rainbow fire, or the zig-zag rainbow left behind in "May the Best Pet Win") This is true, though pinky especially has been stated as being able to exploit cartoon physics to an extreme (upto and including 4th-wall awareness/breaking), while most of the characters have to maintain *some* realism.
  19. I wouldn't say that... I can just leave my PC on and get a virus if it's booted to windows (I think Deviant Art has a virus mixed in with their banner ads - no joke)
  20. Once you start looking to TV tropes for answers all the time, it means the site HAS STOLEN YOUR SOUL! *soul belongs to TV Tropes* Glad to see somone else likes it. A friend of mine suggested it's unpopular due to an unwritten rule "No Straight Shippings in MLP"
  21. Neck I'll see if I can fix next time... the overall size means I can probably just 'squish' it down a dozen or so pikels then if *everything* is too wide... Horn... that does sound strange... I'll see what I can do about it too Oh not at all! I couldnt ask for a nicer critique! I'll work on those and try again on another OC (I have 1 OC of my own - that one I showed you was done for my DM as an xmas gift) and hopefully by friday I'll have something new to show
  22. I thought I linked it... oh well... http://neko-0ni.deviantart.com/ my 3 newest deviations. (all variants on the same design)
  23. The forgotten elements? Obviously Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart! ...and when their powers combine.... Sorry, had to make that joke... Here's a fun idea to play with: Element of Redemption Also, cheesy enough "Love"
  24. This is why people like Twilight+Trixie: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FoeYay Personally, Trixie is too evil imo, I cast her as my dragon usually... Personally... I got nothing against it if it make sense. Some I don't really like, personally I don't care for AppleDash for example because the two are always arguing (and do NOT get me started on the Bloomberg "pairings"... >.<). On the other paw, it almost a secret subtext that Dash and Fluttershy are more than casual friends (Though it's also possible that since they've known each other since at least school (probably since birth since both are from cloudsdale) they're more like sisters. Also as ridiculous as it is, I'm amused by Discopie... Honestly if he was less "evil" I could see that working out beautifully... I seem to be unpopular, I love to ship Dash and Soarin. Something about that look he gave her seemed to be saying 'hey, I like you' and she seemed to like him too. (I also like the idea of her being in love or in a crush on a wonderbolt... just amuses me) Also someone said that in a lot of fanon Soarin and Spitfire were a couple...? Doesnt bother me but seemed odd imo...
  25. This may belong in another forum, I'm not sure. I'm trying to work out the "official" rules of how Magic works in the FiM universe... The overall concept seems to be "only Unicorns can do active magic" and "Pegasai can do weather magic" The sub-text to the first "rule" seems to be "unless you have a 'mage' talent (like Twilight or Trixie), you can only do magic related to your talent (And telekinesis)" However on at least 1 occasion we've seen a unicorn perform magic NOT related to his talent (Snails (Snips?) made his horn glow in Boast Busters) There is also an argument to whether Zecora performs "magic" or a form of "Alchemy" Next, There is a distinct magic aura when spike sends letters to Celestia and regurgitates her responses. Does this mean dragons have magic? Last, It's been said that Pegasai have magic related to weather. We've seen them create storms and even tornadoes. Also the Wonderbolts make lightning and storm clouds trails. (Not to mention Rainbow Dash's trail of rainbows, and arguably possibly the trail of rainbow fire she left behind in May the Best Pet Win) Now, yes, I am trying to organize them FOR a fanfic, but I'm trying to work out the OFFICIAL rules outlined by the episodes (or official sources) so please no references to fan works. Thoughts?
