  1. Maybe just needing a junior RP member to approve a character to start roleplaying, under a kind of provisional agreement just until a senior looks it over.

That would cause frustration for the user when they get told they can use their OC one day, but not the next. Plus there's no guarantee that a user will check back in on their OC app thread once they've obtained this provisional approval. Our current system however minimizes potential frustration by simplifying the apping process on the user's end, giving them confidence that once their OC's approved, it'll remain approved. :)

  2. I was told in the thread by a member of either the SRP or RPH groups that never acknowledging or using his real name and only ever going by his nickname was okay, them even claiming to have done this very thing themselves.

That was before an admin of our forums chimed in, who has the authority to overrule RPH and SRPH. Regard Rosewind's mandates as the last and most definitive word on the matter.

Also, if he never introduces himself as anything other than his nickname, then how could anyone ever address him as anything other than his nickname without using out of character knowledge they couldn't possibly have IC?

Don't mention that fact in your app then. It's more important that the users who already know of the prior Haywire are given the choice of how to refer to your OC, so that they can be spared confusion. Addressing the needs of your fellow RPers is an important skill to possess here.

His new last name is there for the sole purpose of just getting past this whole thing. It won't ever be mentioned, won't ever be used; won't ever be known to anyone other than himself and his parents, and they will never tell. For all intents and purposes, it doesn't exist.

An admin has already ruled that action as impermissible, despite what we lower-ranked staff may have previously told you. If you want your OC approved at this stage, you will have to accept the compromise I proposed, of giving users an actual choice on what name to call your pony.

Other than that though, I see no reason to change it any further with how I've seen other people get by no problem by doing the same thing.

When asked to change application names, our other users don't go out of their way to make it impossible for their characters to be referred to by any other name other than the one RPH instructed couldn't be used. This goes against the intent of our rules. You must accept the fact that our userbase has the right to call your character by a name other than the one used by a prior OC, or else your app will remain locked.

Any further discussion should be brought into PM.

  3. To be rather honest, we would have stamped your app if you hadn't outright indicated your intention to violate the spirit of our RP rules. In all cases, it's always better to scrap an OC you're deeply unwilling to edit, rather than follow the RPH's instructions for an app only to disregard them within our RP itself. Our app approval process would be meaningless if RP characters were not actually bound to stay true to their application sheets.

Nicknames that are used in place of names in RP are fine, but please make good faith edits in the application itself. IE; no pointing out how everypony only refers to your OC by their nickname. Other characters need the option to use either the proper name or nickname.

  4. Yeah, a good chunk of the Canterlot RPers I bond with basically use ad hoc chatrooms in Skype to hang out these days, so that's where I spend my IM time as well. I remember using the site chatroom more often when I was just starting out and wasn't well connected with any users. But once I got into the Skype crowd, it got very hard to me to look back. Just my personal reflections......

  5. Those users who app REA ponies with the obvious purpose of having them "see action" don't really grasp what WoE is supposed to be about. If a soldier can't be played well within a slice-of-life setting, they're simply not a fit for a setting attempting to replicate the core mood of FiM. That said, I hope other users take inspiration from this article and go create more members of the REA. :)

  6. WoE has a lot of different and interesting characters, but there is definitely an over-abundance of musicians, adventurers and travelers and not so many small-business owners and ponies who are willing to keep their four hooves in one place.

In my experience, unless the users apping such characters are really committed to RPing, these sorts of characters tend to come... and go. So really, it all cancels out in the end... even if we have to pour through several musician apps a month, lol.

But yeah, I think we share similar philosophies when it comes to thinking about apping ponies. I do my best to have my characters come from all walks of life. So far I've got a discount store owner, elitist archaeologist, REA colonel, zebra chieftan, sheriff-wannabe, magic counselor, magic student, streetwise filly, museum curator, marine wildlife caretaker, weather factory worker, pawn shop owner (and part-time adventurer), and an airworthy recipe for disaster as all part of my RP roles. As you can see, I make all efforts to keep my personal cast as diverse as possible. :D
