My two big suggestions would be the dot Hack series (original and GU), and any of the Tales of games.

One that I really like is Katamari Damacy. But that's a fairly widely known game, a slightly more obscure one would be Psychonauts, but it won awards, so might've heard of it.

Katamari Damacy, GENJI: Dawn of the Samurai, Final Fantasy X-XII, Persona 3,4, Half Life...there's more but I'm going off the top of my head. A lot of the games said above are great, too.

Sure you can, within reason. My very first WoE pony ever was a famous singer.

Yeah, I did get cut off by the word limit, but it still seemed to work so I left it. I wanted to add that, if you still wanted to go for being universally known, my approach would be to make a character who is up and coming and has a desire to be famous, and then try to work toward that in threads. That's what I would think is the other big option.
