I feel like this moved away from the topic of people finding the "nazi" part of grammar nazi offensive. No where in OPs post do they say that they'll act like a grammar nazi and constantly stamp out grammar imperfections.

Well, people hate grammar nazis. That or they don't care. Either way, the fact that some people hate them is reason enough not to use it. Sure, it might be an innocent joke to you but do you really want people to make that initial first impression of you? There's certainly a lot of negative connotations there, and to have it as your avatar makes people draw those kinds of conclusions. I certainly know I wouldn't give anyone with a grammar nazi avatar the time of day. Perhaps there...

Perhaps there's a compromise, putting something in your signature about wanting to improve your own grammar, and maybe help others.
