1. Oh, hello! So, you’ve decided to join the World of Equestria role play? That’s wonderful! But, um, before you get started, you might want to read Rarity's Simply Fabulous Application Form. I mean, if that’s OK with you… Now, once you know what you have to do to apply, the first thing you have to do is pick what species you want your character to be! So I’ve put together a list of all the cute, and, um, not-so-cute creatures you could be! Now, these rules only apply to the World of Equestria RP. But in Free-for-All, you can play all kinds of fantastic creatures! For now, let’s start with ponies. Pony Types: Earth Ponies Unicorns Pegasus Crystal Ponies Areion (Bat Ponies) Unfortunately, there are only four Alicorns allowed in the World of Equestria, the four Princesses! So, I’m sorry, but your original character can not be an Alicorn, or any kind of winged unicorn, if you want to play in the Mane RP I mean. But ponies aren’t the only creatures you can play! Other Playable Species: Buffalo Changelings (Drones only, with the exception of Queen Chrysalis) Diamond Dogs Donkeys and Mules Dragons (only babies and teenagers) Domestic Farm Animals (Cows, Goats, Sheep) Griffins Hippogriffs (and their Seapony forms) Horses Kirin Minotaurs (They’re not monsters!) Sea Serpents (only babies and teenagers) Sirens Yaks Zebras You can even play as some species that don't appear on our show! A few of those are shown here. We are also open to other creatures that could fit into the RP world! If you want to apply for something like a camel or a giraffe, feel free! The RP Helpers will take a look, and see how well your character might fit in. Deer (all species, including caribou) Giraffes Hippocamps (Dolphin-type Sea ponies) Kelpies (Shark-like Sea Ponies) Chamroshes (Winged Wolves) Perytons (Winged Deer) Serpent Dragons (Eastern-styled Dragons) Qilin (Part-pony, part-deer, and part-serpent dragon) Longma (Qilin relative w/ wings) Yokai (Mysterious spirit creatures) Now, I want to talk about my favorite subject: Animals! Your World of Equestria character can have a pet or ‘companion animal’ in the application. Animals can’t speak… well, I mean most ponies can’t understand them like I can, but they can be quite intelligent! It does mean, though, that most animals can’t be playable characters. You can, however, create a pet with their own personality, and include it in your character’s application! Angel Bunny joins me in a lot of role plays! But, just one thing: You really shouldn't have a large predator as a pet. So no wolves, or tigers, or any dangerous animals like that. Now, um, this next list has creatures that you are not allowed to apply for, and can’t be companions. I’m really sorry about that, but we have to set rules to keep the role play a nice place, and many of these are not very nice creatures… Not Playable: Alicorns (except for the five Princesses) Ahuitzotl Cerberus Cockatrice Huge, gigantic, terrifying, enormous, teeth gnashing, sharp scale having, horn wearing, smoke snoring, could-totally-eat-a-pony-in-one-bite, totally all-grown-up Dragons. Draconequus (with the exception of Discord) Hydras Manticores Parasprites Phoenixes Quarray eels Adult Sea Serpents (with the exception of Steven Magnet) Timberwolves Ursa Majors or Ursa Minors Windigos No monsters No Humans, Humanoids, Demons/Spirits, Aliens, Shape Shifters, Robots, etc. Now, if you have any questions about what kinds of characters you can play in the World of Equestria RP, or are just confused about the rules, you can contact one of the RP Helpers! They are all very nice ponies who will help you with your application! And, um, have fun in the role play!
2. So here he is, Lightning Chaser. Check out my app and give me some pointers if you can. I could use all the tips I can, so I welcome all help, negative or positive. I'd like to start RPing and all I need is someone to accept the app, so head over there and help me out! Thanks guys and hopefully I'll see you in the RP forums soon! Ps: I'd love some artwork of Lightning Chaser, so I'd be ever so grateful if one of you incredibly talented people could help me out! I love you guys, and thank you so much!
3. 1. What a Tragic Mess! Greetings Ponies! I seldom venture into crossovers but I figured it was about time that I gave it a good honest shot! I decided to make a plot based on the musical on cd “Razia’s Shadow” But before we get in over our heads I figure we should put down some ground rules First off this will take place in the 18+ Section of the FFA so I suggest you be sure you are 18 or older, it will not be sexual however there will be violence. I. You will be required to apply for the characters via sending me a pm with your character information as we will need a equal amount of dark and light ponies II. Your ponies will NOT be Alicorns unless you are taking on Celestia or Luna, Earth, Pegasus, and Unicorns are allowed, as well as a few changelings . III. One or two paragraphs at minimum, no one sentence replies, put effort into your posts please, I don’t care if this is FFA or not there will be no slacking on my ship! (Shush I know I am not on a boat L Mane cast are more than allowed but if you take on the part of a mane character you better be able to play them. Alright any questions on the rules or plots then feel free to post them here J Time for the PLOT! Don’t you ever dream of someplace better? The balance is gone, the two princesses ruling night and day had a horrid dispute causing them to divide the relm of Equestria, one half trapped in the dark, and the other in the light, a large mountain being formed between the two sides to separate them from each other, despite this bitterness, there are still ponies who remember the time when the world was in balance and at peace, but now they have nothing but the cold mountain as proof, to this day nopony has crossed it, save for the brave few whom were never heard from again. Both Princesses sit on their thrones, elevated high enough to see the other’s side, and both feel the tear in the divide due to their squabble, which by now neither can remember the cause, and they miss each other, but both too stubborn to take the step to mend the bond. That is where the Dark and the Light come into play. To erase the wrong we’ve done! The Dark and Light will become one! In the dark there were two young princes, bound to one day rule the lower levels of the dark, Adakais the youngest , and his older brother Pallis whom was heir to the throne…As young foals they heard stories from the elders about the light and young Adakais’s head was filled with ideas of one day crossing the mountain and seeing this glorious city all a glow with lights, while Pallis wrote it all off as nonsense. In the light there were two siblings as well, Anhura and Ahrima whom grew up hearing of the cold and desolate darkness where plants grow but are wild and untamed, and where a pony has to work hard to thrive, Anhura’s heart breaking with pity, and the desire to help them, while her Sibling Ahrima brushed them all off as old Ponytails for small foals. Both sides are divided, but two are about to make that step to reunite them, on their trecks through their kingdoms both Adakais and Anhura will come across many beings in the dark and the light, some to hinder, like those who are much happier in the dark and light segregation , and those who wish for nothing more but to aid them. Which side are you on? The Dark consists of Changelings Gryphons Earth ponies Unicorns The Light consists of Dragons Pegasus Ponies Unicorns The Rest is up to you, to do with what you’ll do. Application in next post. Accepted Characters : Thanatos (Earth, Dark, Companion of Adakais) Adakais (Unicorn, Dark, Main Protagonist )
4. Why hello there, darling! Eager to join our little World of Equestria game? Looking to let all that wonderful creative energy flow free? Well, before you do get started, you're going to have to submit a Canterlot.com character application. A gorgeous dress starts with a fabulous design and much the same can be said for a fantastic character! Your character's application is that design; it's there to tell us all exactly who your character is and how we can expect him or her to behave in the RP. For that reason, it is imperative that you fill it out and fill it out right! Luckily I'm here to tell you just how to make your application shine like the most beautiful of diamonds! So listen up and let Miss Rarity tell you exactly how this is done! The application must include all of the following, so listen closely. Absolutely no skipping anything, now! How to title your application: Now, before we dive in and get started on what goes in the application, I must first explain how we like for applications to be titled. Every character application starts with the title. It's the first thing ponies see--it's the thing that catches the RP Team's attention. So, needless to say it's important that one fills it out just right! Right? But how do we do that? Well, a title needs to start off with a topic prefix for the character's species; you should find a drop down box when you go to post your application that contains all of the options! This part is as simple as just picking one of the choices from the list. When you do, it'll appear in the title for you; you don't have to write anything! You do need to write in your character's name, however, followed by a label for the application's status in the title box. Now this last thing is particularly important, so do listen up, dear. For the status label, you have two options: [Ready] and [WIP]. [Ready] is for applications that are ready to be receive feedback from the RP Team. It does not mean that you are absolutely sure your application is the pinnacle of perfection, and in fact you could still be actively working on it; it just tells us all that you are ready to move forward with the process. Applications with this tag should soon be noticed and reviewed by one of the RP Helpers. [WIP] on the other hand, is for applications that you are still actively working on. These are incomplete applications that are not ready for RP Helper eyes just yet. If you are looking for feedback on an application DO NOT use this label, as it tells the team specifically that you're not ready for them yet (though RP Helpers may still look at and comment on [WIP] applications at their own discretion from time to time). Name: Let's on to the actual application content. To start with, before anything else, your character is going to need a name! Everypony has one! Now, we ponies, you'll find, have certain naming conventions. Our names aren't quite like the names of you humans. A good pony name is comprised of one or two words, usually having to do with our talents or personality. I happen to be a pony of truly uncommon beauty, talent and charm who is also adept at finding rare gemstones, for instance, so of all the possible names, Rarity certainly is the most fitting! Essentially, just remember to stay away from human names and you'll most likely be fine. Oh, and do also remember that we ponies don't typically have set surnames--Applejack and that oversized family of hers don't all have names ending in Apple after all! Of course, if your character is not a pony, you're playing by a different set of rules here! For your dragons, griffons and such, we're more open to all kinds of naming possibilities within reason. Gender: Now this one is simple, dear. What gender is your pony? You should indicate Male, Female, or whatever it is the character identifies as. Be a darling, darling! Age: For a pony's age, we ask that you DO NOT give a specific number (we do not know the number of years ponies live, or at what rate they age). Instead, please use one of the following labels: Foal - for ponies who are young children, regardless of gender Colt - for male ponies who are in their teenage years Filly - for female ponies who are in their teenage years Stallion - for adult male ponies Mare - for adult female ponies. You are welcome to add modifiers like "older" or "young" to give us a a more specific idea of just how old the character is, just don't give us any numbers for age (and that goes for ANYWHERE in the application)! For non-pony characters, you should use equivalent non-pony related terms for age. Child, Teen and Adult will usually be just fine, but if you want to use terms more specific to the character's species, that should be fine as well. Species: Another straight forward field here! What species is your character, dear? A pegasus? An earth pony? A lovely, majestic unicorn like myself? Or perhaps you are looking to create something a little more exotic? Griffons, zebras, cute little baby dragons like Spike? There truly are a lot of options! If you wish to avoid undue trouble, please do make sure you look at the Playable Species List to make sure your species is something that's allowed first though! Eye colour: What colour are your character's eyes? Any solid colour is fine, but we ask that you stay away from any really unusual eye effects. Keep it simple and you should have no problems here, darling! Character Colour: Describe for us your character's colours. If your character is a pony, give us the coat colour. A zebra? Tell us about those stripes! A dragon? The scales! Mane/Tail/Other: Tell us about the character's mane and tail! You need to indicate the colour (or colours) as well as a general idea of how the mane and tail are styled. Feel free to include any hats or mane accessories here as well, if you like--as well as any facial hair for all your distinguished stallions! Be as descriptive as you can! Physique: For this, just tell us a little about your character's shape. How big or small is your character? Is he or she muscular? Thin? Stocky? Glamorous? You can also use this space to tell us about any distinguishing marks, scars or physical abnormalities your character might have on his or her body. Use your creativity, but make sure you keep everything within reason and don't go overboard! Your character should look like he or she fits in the world where he or she will exist. Residence: Simple! Just tell us where your character currently lives. This is important, as it tells other players what locations they can expect to see you play your character in the RP. If you need help, take a look at our list of World of Equestria Locations for ideas! Occupation: What is your character's job? Please do keep this reasonable for the world in which the character will exist. If your character d0es not have an occupation, feel free to use this space to tell us how they spent their free time. Cutie Mark: In this section, we ask that you describe your character's cutie mark. Give us details, darling! Pictures help, but are not required. Do make sure the cutie mark is both appropriate and accurately describes your character. Stay away from symbols that are trademarked or already have a clear and explicit association with something else, such as flag symbols; the cutie mark should be something entirely personal having to do specifically with your character or his or her talents after all. You also need to tell us how your pony got his or her cutie mark. Trust me, the moment in which somepony receives their cutie mark is an important one for absolutely everypony! Just describe in however much detail as you please the events surrounding this pivotal moment in your pony's life. Make sure the story is appropriate and logical. We should be able to easily understand how these particular events lead to this particular mark appearing. It is simply not acceptable for you to not know or not be sure what the cutie mark means in relation to the character. All ponies get cutie marks, and they get them when they are still young. An adult mare or stallion will always have her or his cutie mark, no exceptions! However, for all of your fillies, colts and foals, bare flanks are definitely still a possibility. If this is the case, it is enough to simply indicate as much. Oh, and if your character is not a pony or pony related species, it's fine to simply answer "not applicable" here. Unique Traits: Tell us about the little things special to your pony. If he or she has any special abilities, like my gem finding and fashion magics or my friend Pinkie's Pinkie Sense, include them here. Physical skills and skill with weapons or tools would also go here. As with everywhere else, we encourage creativity, but do make sure that the abilities make sense for the world to which your character will belong. The abilities should also not be of the sort that stress power over character; remember that this is a social game and the fun will come in cooperating with others. No one is going to want to engage with a character who feels unfairly overpowered. I would also advise that you steer clear of abilities which directly mimic those of me or my friends and acquaintances. Unique is the key word here. Rainbow might dazzle us all with her Sonic Rainboom, but that doesn't mean your character should be able to perform their own version of a Rainboom too. It's never fashionable to be a copycat. History: Describe your character's history. Tell us all about his or her life. Be as creative and descriptive as you like, darling. A good history is important, but we're not asking for every detail of your character's life story. As a general guideline, these are some of the basic questions you might consider answering about your pony in this section: Where was your character born? How was life for him or her growing up? Who are his or her parents and how do they get along with your character? Is there any other family we should know about? What is his or her life like now? How did your character get to where he or she is? Where does he or she hope to go from here? Character Personality: This one is probably the single most critical field when it comes to RP: how your character will behave. Again, you should be as inventive and as thorough as you are able. List their hobbies, likes, dislikes and any other little quirks your character might have. Be sure to tell us how your character will act and interact with others. Good characters will be unique, well-rounded and well thought out personalities. Remember that no one is perfect; your character should have flaws and faults, fears and worries! Do note that, particularly introverted characters will be a lot harder to utilize in RP. As I said previously, the game will rely on you engaging with and interacting with others--so characters who refuse to do this likely won't be as much for you or anyone else. Character Summary: Finally, give us a brief summary of your character overall. This should just be a condensed version of who the character is overall. Be sure to include all the most important details. This section should give someone reading it the general idea of who your character is in the broader sense, even if they haven't read any of the rest of the application. That about covers what should be included in the application, but there are a few more things that you absolutely need to know before you get started, dear! Applications should be written in plain, black, left-aligned text, with only the labels for the various fields in bold. Believe me, I understand the need to make everything gorgeous, but the RP team is looking for information that is easy to read, not pretty to look at. We prefer you write applications in third person. It's just easier to extract the needed information that way! Pictures of the character are very much welcomed, but are certainly not required for an application to be approved. If you're still unsure about anything after all that I've told you, feel free to direct any questions you may have to any of the talented and dedicated Canterlot.com RP Helpers! Have fun! To get started, just copy the application form below and paste it onto a new thread for your application: Character Application: Roleplay Type: Name: Gender: Age: Species: Eye colour: Coat: Mane/Tail: Physique: Residence: Occupation: Cutie Mark: Unique Traits: History: Character Personality: Character Summary: Addendum on Roleplaying as Antagonists and the Value of Communication: Since the World of Equestria roleplay now allows for play in worlds where unsavory characters may more commonly exist, there are a few other things we ask you to keep in mind, particularly in the case that the character your making is of a more wicked nature. If creating a thread where conflict is likely to arise, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you set up an out of a character discussion thread and link it in the original post. This is actually a good thing to have for any RP thread, but for threads involving villains and the like, just having a space to communicate with everyone else involved will spare you all so much confusion and frustration. "Power gaming", "God-Moding" and the like--that is roleplaying which is unfair, where one player dominates a thread and refuses to let his or her character be effected by events in the thread, be shown in a negative light or simply just doesn't play along with others. If such behavior is noticed, players are advised to report it to the staff using the Report button located at the bottom right of every post on the forum. Reported posts will be reviewed and if we agree that the behavior is inappropriate, the posts will be removed. Guilty roleplayers will not receive punishment beyond this, though they might receive a verbal warning from the mod staff upon repeated infractions. Remember that your roleplaying partners, by rule, must have your consent to do ANYTHING in the RP. If someone does something to your character which you do not like, you do not have to accept that it has happened. Roleplay needs to be fun for everyone involved, and for that proper communication is vital. If you're ever in a situation where you're unsure if doing something to someone else's character is okay or not, ASK THEM FIRST! Courtesy goes along way, darling. And finally, do be aware that, if a thread becomes an ongoing problem--that is, if frequent reports and complaints are received or if wildly inappropriate behavior is noticed--and no other recourse can be found, such a thread may be locked without notice by the Canterlot staff. The goal here is for our players to have fun; newer players should be encouraged to develop roleplay skill without ridicule or threat of punishment for "doing it wrong." Skilled players should do everything in their power to help support the newer ones. Remember that everyone is new once and deserves the chance to improve--something only done through actively playing with other skilled players. I do hope our players will keep this in mind as we continue to develop this -- and other roleplay sections -- at Canterlot!
5. “When a system no longer serves the purpose for which it was designed, change must be sought.” Ladies and gentlemen of Canterlot, I am worried that the character application system on our forums is no longer fulfilling its intended design. Allow me to elaborate. Eighteen days ago, I joined this forum with the intent of leaping into the collective writing experience offered by the fair valleys of Equestria. Since then I have lost interest in my original reasons for embarking on this voyage, instead carefully observing not only my own, but the many other applications awaiting approval. Thusly I discovered something rather shocking. The average turnaround for an application is presently fourteen days. When you consider that the average time span for securing a uk passport is shorter than this, we can safely conclude that something is amiss. If the collective writing section of this forum is to continue to grow throughout the upcoming season, this must be attended upon posthaste. Through examination of the various applications within the confines of the system, I think I have determined three key issues that are ripe for discussion. 1; First of all, I would like to point out that the moderators / help-staff are just as much victims of this as the participants. The present model is more reminiscent of orchestrated chaos then an effective system, wasting not only their time in repeated instructions, but demanding an unrealistic level of dedication on their part. 2; The number of rules and regulations spread across multiple threads is disorientating to newcomers and a recipe for ignorance. Like lightning, it is human nature to take the path of least resistance. Though the basic guide for character Aplication design has been recently streamlined, there are many other more detailed guides and instructions that are taken as law, yet buried within the FAQ threads. The format as it stands dissuades applicants and will often result in aforesaid users skipping the most important points within the maelstrom of information. 3; Assessment takes far too long for both parties involved. Though primarily linked in to the first two points, there are other issues that should be isolated under their own heading. These issues stem from the innately mixed view points of staff, each searching for different levels of engagement within an application. Help Staff should not be required to cross-examine apps unless requested by the initial examiner, as this risks unwanted contradiction with one another. Yet all parties are encouraged to access applications in post order, rather than through an adoption process dedicated to pushing apps to completion quickly and efficiently. Again, not their fault, just the way the system has been constructed. There are many other issues that have become integral to the weighing down of this system. Small changes made over a long period of time have produced an analogue of British Rail, a model of inefficiency that places undue stress on both its staff and passengers. At the heart of any Application is whimsy. An idea will come to someone spontaneously or during discourse, sometimes for use only in one particular story. As such, the system accompanying this should be quick and responsive, lest the player lose interest entirely. In the same breath though, help-staff and moderators should not be taking on a second (unpaid) job when they accept said titles. It’s a difficult balance to achieve, one which has resulted in a great number of headaches I don’t doubt. True, I am making a lot of assumptions here, and I apologize if anything I’ve said so far has been out of line. But I feel quite strongly that improvements could be easily made to ensure a better experience for all involved. If possible, can there be a formal discussion on this subject and changes that could be made to improve the situation? It would be of special interest to hear the thoughts of the staff, their experiences and what they find to be most time consuming. In the meantime, here are a few suggestions I would like to put forth based upon what I have observed. Keep in mind that these are all just suggestions and ideas. Above all I am interested to hear what others think about the system and their own suggestions on what they would keep / change and why. Automation; When first joining the forum and posting in the ‘introduction’ area, the new user is greeted by an interface constructed of simple questions and dropdown boxes. Why can’t this system be applied within the applications area? We have already established a standard format for all apps, so why give players the option of failing that particular aspect of character creation? The creation of form that appears whenever a new post is created within this forum would save a considerable amount of time. This would include the reduction of such selective items as ‘Species’, ‘sex’, ‘age’, ‘colour pallet’ and ‘location’ to a dropdown selection, coupled with character limited description boxes where appropriate. Location should also be generalized to regions and specifics left for the character background. Yes, there is a housing shortage in Ponyville, but that doesn’t mean that the character cannot live with reasonable proximity of the town. This applies to any rule that is seen as static; if you don’t want something to be a variable, don’t give applicants the option in the first place. It invites failure. Build rules into the App Form; Many things about a character application form should be self explanatory, but there are always exceptions. In addition to the rules / guidelines posts in FAQ and on the app section itself, each option box on the form should have an explanation link of some kind attached. Each opens a popup with both a short and ‘advanced view’ detailed explanation of what is expected within that part of the form. This ensures that all relevant information is to hand while creating the application, rather than stored elsewhere. Notifications and Time Limits; Once posted, there will be an initial period of interest in which the creator will be watching it like a hawk. If there is a response within say five hours or so, the poster is almost certain to have the drive required to make the necessary changes. The longer it is left unacknowledged, the less interested they will be in its completion. At the outmost, the active period for an application should be around three days from initial post to completion. You may scoff, but it is possible. Right now the system is clogged with a backlog of apps which should have been quick to clear. We need to make each thread as easy as possible for Staff to sort and reply too. Standardizing will go a long way towards this, but another major addition would be automatic notifications for both the OP and the Editor. Also, from what I can see, moderators are required to post on individual apps that have fallen silent, a waste of time and energy on all accounts. Introducing a posting bot may resolve some of these issues. Right now, the notification system is very good for keeping track of replies across the forum, but sadly does little to highlight more important information which can easily get buried. This could be solved by including a script that notifies the participants of an app via PM whenever there is a reply waiting. After remaining inactive for three days, the bot will post a reminder on the thread and send a Personal Message to the OP. After a further three days, if post bot’s reply is still the last response, the thread is automatically deleted, keeping the forum clean. But what if the poster simply went on holiday! Now the app they’ve worked so hard on is gone forever! Well not so much; The primary reason for the bot’s PM is to send a quote of the thread’s first post to the recipient, there by effectively saving a copy of the character application. Removal of Work In Progress Tags; Why is WIP even applicable? Staff don’t look at apps until they are marked as Final. Instead of encouraging posters to clog up the apps section with half finished products, we should direct any applicant to use a word processor to produce the draft copy of their character background; this being the only thing that should need work at all with the implementation of a standardized application form. In the age of Google Docs and many other free Word Processors, there should be no reason for anything to be half finished in the first place. Moving Cast Apps; Many cast apps are contested and thus have multiple threads concerning the same character spread across several pages. Again, this clogs the system. The creation of a dedicated Cast Application sub-forum would keep these apps nicely organized. Under this forum a altered version of the application form could include additional choices, as the tier of the proposed character. These changes could be integrated with the cast list to prevent characters being applied for if they are already allocated to a player. All available Tier One characters are listed on the initial ‘Name’ option as a dropdown list / auto complete, the latter flashing a warning if the named character is already taken. On a far lesser note; do we need to canonize every background character? There are some fanons that are obviously going to be contested, such as Ditzy, Lyra and Bonbon, Vinyl Scratch etc, but even the nameless faceless scene fillers seem to be mentioned here there and everywhere. Could these just be classified as OC with reference to their appearance? Perhaps an irrelevant comment, but I may as well throw that in here somewhere. Many of these ideas would be a nightmare to implement or downright impossible due to code limitations. These are just all just ‘ideal world’ concepts, a base to work from as it were. Above all I am interested to hear what others think about the system and their own suggestions on what they would keep / change and why. Archturus out!
6. ...got into gear and got caught up on Applications! Okay, that's not about me. But I don't have any followers yet, so who cares? Especially Brian, Imagination, and Armony. Accepted Apps bin is full, but I'd say that's better than Applications being full.
