History:

The branches of the Apple family extend far across Equestria; from the fields of Ponyville to the wastelands of the western frontier and even to the streets of Manehatten. Manehatten of course is the birthplace and home of Babs Seed, the younger daughter of a loving couple of apple wholesalers. Babs’s parents may not have been farmers, but they had the equally-important occupation of selling and distributing apples to retail markets scattered all over the sprawling metropolis. With guidance from her big sister, the young Babs Seed learned about the family business and how to live in the big city.

As she became old enough to attend school however, Babs felt little passion for the family business and determined that her calling in life would not be connected with it. Without any insight as to what she wanted to do in life however, Babs became one of the few fillies in her age group to not earn a cutie mark at the traditional time to do so. Consequently, a small clique of self-important schoolmates started harassing Babs for her lack of a cutie mark. Extremely self-conscious about her blank-flank, the filly attempted to tell her bullies to stop teasing her about it… they didn’t listen.

Miss Seed’s ordeal continued unabated, while her own demeanor increasingly grew more distant and suspicious towards other ponies. Insistent on proving herself a big filly by coping with the bullying alone, Babs drove away any friends who offered their support. Keeping her social troubles a secret from her family as well, Babs felt that ‘snitching’ to her parents and sister would only make the harassment even worse. Eventually on one faithful day, things came to a head as Babs’s bullies goaded her into a schoolyard fight; both Babs and her bullies received disciplinary actions for their confrontation.

Under questioning from school administrators and her mum and dad, Babs Seed at last confessed that she had been hounded by bullies for some time. Feeling appalled that they hadn’t been able to do anything for their daughter until now, Babs’s parents and older sister resolved to do anything and everything to rebuild the filly’s spirits. One of their measures was sending Babs on a two-week trip to Ponyville to stay with her cousins, the reasoning being that a drastic change of scenery would give Babs a chance to get past her heartache.

However, Babs Seed’s Ponyville trip nearly ended in utter catastrophe. Reluctant to associate herself with her blank-flanked cousin Apple Bloom and her Cutie Mark Crusader companions, Babs fell in with two rottenly-spoiled fillies, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon. Not wishing to endure the anguish of getting picked on yet again, Babs Seed sought instead to gain acceptance by making life miserable for the “Cutie Mark Crybabies”. Intimidating Apple Bloom from telling anything to Applejack, Babs almost ended up injured by a booby-trapped float when the desperate Crusaders opted to fight back rather than ‘snitch’. Saved in the nick of time by the repentant Apple Bloom and her friends, a grateful Babs apologized for her behavior and then happily joined the Cutie Mark Crusaders as a sister, friend, confidante, ally, bosom buddy, compadre, gal pal, amiga, chum of chums... and a fellow crusader!

Renouncing Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon’s ‘friendship’, Babs Seed vowed to form a Manehatten offshoot of the Crusaders and to let her big sis know whenever she gets teased. Miss Seed’s tribulations may not disappear overnight, but the filly has renewed hope that she can start having fun again with both her old friends back home and new Crusader recruits. Who knows, maybe Babs and her new crusading pals will finally figure out how to earn their cutie marks.....

Character Summary:

A resident of Manehatten’s East Side, Babs Seed knows the working-class neighborhood like the back of her hoof. Like many other young ponies experienced in urban life, Babs’s impeccable street smarts enable her to quickly determine somepony’s trustworthiness, avoid rough parts of town, and stay physically fit. Amongst her close East Side chums, Babs is especially renowned for showing toughness and resolve towards potential troublemakers without relying on brute strength… although Babs also knows whenever it’s best to gallop away. It’s no accident that Babs’s tendency to confront agitators head-on makes her relations with bullies extra-antagonistic.

As a daughter of apple merchants, the filly has also learned how to do business with food retailers throughout the East Side and Manehatten’s other neighborhoods. Frequently, Babs assists her elder sister whenever she delivers apples to stores or convinces other businesses to sell or use Apple family apples. Should a rare emergency arise, Babs could competently deliver apple shipments and wring out business arrangements herself. Miss Seed may not be too enamored with the family’s wholesaling business, but she never refuses opportunities to demonstrate her maturity and worthiness to her sister and parents.

With her family’s reluctant blessing, Babs Seed outside of school takes on a diverse variety of odd jobs throughout Manehatten in her hunt for a cutie mark. Horseshoe shiner, paperfilly, errand runner, living statue… the city contains seemingly-limitless opportunities for Babs to find her calling in life. Yet with each job she takes, the young filly never lasts long until she ends up disenchanted with her employment and quits. But Miss Seed will never give up on her overriding mission; determined to prove her schoolyard naysayers wrong, Babs trucks on no matter what setbacks she faces.

By her reckoning, Babs Seed’s fortunes are now set to improve now that she is a Cutie Mark Crusader. Through regular written correspondence with Apple Bloom and her friends, Babs gains tips on how to manage her own local branch of the Crusaders, although Babs often questions her pen-pals’ “do it first, ask questions later” approach of trying out any activity that immediately comes to mind. As a consequence of living in an urban neighborhood, Babs lacks the freedom to build her own clubhouse like cousin Abby can, so she makes due by setting aside a section of her family’s warehouse space for her Crusader activities.

Just as she eventually came to the defense of Apple Bloom & Friends, Miss Seed currently sticks up for other blank-flanks on a frequent basis. Socially and emotionally opening up to said blank-flanks… is another matter entirely. Babs regards anypony she doesn’t know well with suspicion unless they can prove themselves to be friendly. Even among her family and close friends, Babs’s fierce independent streak disinclines her from ever seeking out their counsel for any type of situation. And for the rough exterior that Babs projects, she’ll timidly conceal her blank flank with her tail whenever somepony points it out.

Back when she wasn’t old enough to be called out on not having a cutie mark, Babs Seed loved playing out in the streets of the East Side with her friends and engaging in light-hearted mischief; nothing in the world has yet to change that. However in the months before Babs found solace in Ponyville, the filly also found a new recreational activity in the form of gardening. For a school project, Babs’s class was tasked with growing a flower and documenting its growth. Finding a calming enjoyable peace in growing her flower, Babs purchased even more seeds to grow and proceeded to convert the family warehouse’s rooftop into a garden retreat. Unknown to her schoolmates, Babs became an amateur aficionada of all things gardening. Babs keeps her new-found love of gardening hush-hush outside her family even to this day, somehow believing that her tough-gal reputation would be tarnished should her secret be revealed.

While Babs Seed’s parents and sister believes that she’s better off showing her gardening passion to the world (deducing that this just may be what will get Babs her coveted cutie mark), they do not press the issue for now other than offer an occasional hint. In the meantime, the family is simply content that the filly is once again enjoying her foalhood like any other young pony. Whether Babs twirls an advertisement in the air as part of whatever crazy gig she’s employed at, or if she’s prowling the streets of Manehatten with her Crusader pals, this little diamond in the rough is bent not only on having fun times and getting her cutie mark but to help other fillies and colts achieve the same thing.
