Roleplay Type: World of Equestria RP – OC
Name: Gen. Pummel
Sex: Male
Age: Near-elderly Stallion
Species: Pegasus
Eye colour: Gold
Coat: Dark grey
Mane/Tail: Pummel’s white mane and tail are fashioned in the typical manner of REA officers.
Physique: Taller and more bulkier than even the average REA stallion, the imposing Pummel cannot fly swiftly but possesses incredible fitness for a pony of his age.

Occupation: General in the Royal Equestrian Army (started out in WoE as a colonel).
Cutie Mark: Pummel’s cutie mark is a red shield in front of two diagonal, pointing-down swords. His mark serves as a representation of his leadership abilities during dangerous situations.

Coming home to Stalliongrad from a school trip to Canterlot, a freak wintertime blizzard wayward the train Pummel and his class were riding. When his no-too-brave teacher suffered a panic attack due to their situation, the young Pummel took it upon himself to maintain order amongst his classmates while the other adults on the train figured out how to last long enough to be rescued.

Since Pummel even in those days kept himself highly active and able to lead around his mates, his efforts were successful at keeping the other students from panicking and making their predicament worse. And so, REA rescuers arrived to find the class relatively-well. Earning the commendation of the rescuers for his efforts, Pummel didn’t realize he had his cutie mark until reunited with his grateful parents.

History:

A son of a hard-working Stalliongrad family, Pummel’s working-class parents taught him the virtues of taking the initiative and self-reliance from a very young age. Pummel’s mum and dad showed extremely-little affection even by Stalliongrad standards, but the lad clearly understood even back then that his parents only wished the best for him. Thus during his early foalhood, the ever-active Pummel found himself looked up to by most of his classmates.

Pummel may not have earned nationwide-fame for the actions that got him his cutie mark, but word of his deeds did reach a most unexpected place. Far to the west within the towering abodes of the griffons, the political and militarily-dominant Razorclaw family partook in a cultural-exchange ritual which by sending one of their chicks to spend their formative years among ponykind, the family received a foal to be immersed in Aquellian culture until their adulthood. Impressed with what they heard about Pummel, the Razorclaws cast aside the usual noble-blooded candidates and offered the colt the privilege of a lifetime; a chance for a pony to live among one of the three ruling families of the griffons. Pummel of course held some reservations about leaving his family , but he was also one not to back down from what he viewed as a challenge; in the end, the colt accepted the offer.

For the rest of his formative years, Pummel lived as a guest of the House of Razorclaw. Attending the most prestigious schools Aquellia had to offer, the young pegasus at first was viewed with disdain by his privileged griffon classmates as just another unremarkable pony. They hoped at first that Pummel would fly back home rather than stay away from his precious home. As the colt started demonstrating himself to be as athletically, academically, and socially adapt as his avian brethren, he became more and more accepted by his peers. By the time Pummel’s primary education was over, he was informally recognized as essentially a son of the House of Razorclaw in all but name and blood.

As a result of his partial-Razorclaw upbringing, Pummel saw himself as a fit-in for the Royal Equestrian Army upon maturing into a stallion and returning to his homeland. To the surprise of virtually nopony, Pummel excelled as an officer cadet and graduated at the top of his class. Starting out as a lieutenant, the young stallion’s first assignments naturally involved escort duty on diplomatic missions to Aquellia. As Pummel advanced through the ranks, he found himself more often directly collaborating with his opposite numbers in the Aquellian military, many of which he personally knew from his school days. By the time the stallion reached the rank of colonel, Pummel had become a respected field advisor for Aquellian commanders, passing on REA methods of peaceful conflict resolution in order to make griffon soldiers better peacekeepers.

During his officer candidate days, Pummel met a pegasus secretary from Stalliongrad while attending a Equestrian Service Organization dance. Finding her to be an especially assertive mare, the stallion promptly fell in love with her and began a relationship with her even as he started his military service. After Pummel's first tour of duty abroad, the couple saw fit to be swiftly wed to one another on a trip to Las Pegasus. And so together, the two managed to father three daughters and one son, although the officer never was able to spend too much time with his family. Pummel sadly also hadn’t been able to spend too much time with his parents before they died of old age. Their loss made Pummel grieve not being there for his family as often as he could have, but he moved on from their loss nonetheless.

In the aftermath of the Changeling assault on Canterlot, REA leadership saw the immediate need to devise strategies and policies to ensure that Equestria wouldn’t be caught off-guard by the insectoid menaces again. Setting up a commission of military and civilian experts, the leadership selected Colonel Pummel to head this task force due to his proven ability to implement security strategies without resorting to violence. As of the present day, the colonel is expected to be the one who sees to it that his commission’s recommendations are carried out.....

Character Summary:

Colonel Pummel is an exceptional leader beyond any question; soldiers praise the old pegasus for his ability to keep cool under any pressure. As a rule, the officer would never give an order to anyone that he wouldn’t carry out himself. In fact, Pummel vastly prefers leading from the field rather than from a tent. Therefore, he actually doesn’t look forward the day his superiors decide to promote him to the rank of general; to him, his promotion would mean getting tied down to a desk for the rest of his military career.

Since the vast majority of his service record involved advisory duties for the Aquellian military, Colonel Pummel has little actual hooves-on experience in commanding REA soldiers compared to other officers of the same rank. Quips that Pummel is really "a griffon in pony’s clothing” are not too far off the mark; the colonel pushes his personnel way farther than typical pony officers, issues disciplinary punishments routinely, chastises his underlings as he deems necessary for motivational purposes, and demotes underlings on the spot for perceived incompetence. This leadership style may primarily be better suited towards commanding more-bellicose griffons, but Pummel sincerely believes that his efforts are needed to toughen up the ranks and prepare the REA for any sort of emergency (which to his alarm seems to have increased in frequency ever since Nightmare Moon’s return).

Adding fuel to the joke that the colonel isn’t an actual pony, Pummel himself is incredibly out-of-touch concerning the cultural matters of his own country. The near-elderly stallion may know all the old Equestrian classics and have a vast appreciation of Aquellian literature and music, but he does not care at all for the books and songs that ponies produce today, nor does he think much of the intrigue and hype surrounding Equestria's most popular celebrities and other notable figures. Ask him who somepony like Sapphire Shores or Daring Do is, and Pummel’s mind will draw a complete blank. And then in response, he’ll probably rant about how the entertainment of his day was far superior to what's out there now.

Soldiers are usually shocked to hear that the blustering colonel they know of is actually more reserved and polite when off-duty. Pummel refuses to speak much about his military experiences to civilians, although he’s considered writing memoirs when he retires from the service. Additionally, the colonel uses much of his free time staying trim by running/flying laps and lifting weights until his muscles are fatigued. Ever a health nut, Pummel also won’t eat any food that is high in fat or otherwise tastes good. Aside from a desk job, what the near-elderly pegasus fears most is letting old age wreck havoc on his body.

Pummel’s family life has not been rather rosy as of late. Pummel and his wife have grown emotionally distant from one another due to the colonel’s frequent absences, although Pummel still maintains a cordial relationship with his currently-estranged wife. His time away from home has also virtually left his children without a full-time father; whenever he is around, Pummel opts to leave them to their own devices much in the same way that his own parents had done for him. His seemingly aloof and disinterested manner towards his offspring should not be mistaken for a lack of love for them; Pummel holds his son and daughters in the highest regard and loves them with all his heart. Should any grave and serious misfortune befall his family, the pegasus would move heaven and earth to provide aid.

Looking back on his army career, the grizzled Pummel is proud of all the things he’s done for the service of Equestria. Yet as an "adoptive" son of the griffon-folk, the colonel is steadfast in his belief that the well-being of Aquellia is inextricably linked to that of Equestria's. Ergo, Pummel aims to do what he can while still in the REA to further strengthen the ties behind the two countries.....

Hiya! As you probably know, I'm not an RP staff helper. I still think I could help you improve this application, however. It's not far from being basically perfect, I just have a few nitpicks.

You don't talk much about his wife or children, despite them being mentioned, which I thought was a little odd. You describe things as being tough at home, but a lot of the story is missing. Where did he meet his wife? Who are his children? What are they like?

How did he not realize he had his cutie mark for so long? Did he not own a mirror? Perhaps I'm misinterpreting

Over all, this is an awesome application. Excellent work as usual, Bellosh! :)

1. I don't talk much about the wife and kids for the simple reason that in my opinion, they don't really exist RP-wise unless they've been apped. Maybe if he had a family connection with an apped character, I'd be more inclined to yap in detail about that. As things stand though, my app is already quite long as it is hehehe.

We'll see though; maybe I can add some details as to why he married his wife in the first place.....

2. Kids don't usually lug mirrors around unless they're self-absorbed, yes? :P

Thanks for your input SRG! :D

Hi Bellosh101!

This app looks VERY good! Every required field is filled and you've written in much detail.

As one who has apped many an 'older' pony, I must say, this app looks fantastic!

:D :D :D

I think you've drawn up an excellent app for him. Makes me wonder how he might know my own SoF involved Razorclaw... and also again makes me wish I could conceivably app her for WoE. Oh... and the app more than deserved this stamp:

Awesome work!
