Sex: Female

Cutie Mark: A magnifying glass superimposed over a shield.

Character History

Rafale was born in Solstice Heights to two guardsponies, both officers in the REA. As a result, her upbringing was very strict, an aspect of her history that continues to shape her today. Even as a young filly, Rafale was well read due to her parents’ extensive collection of classical literature, theater, and history. She eschewed fragile and fickle childhood friendships in favour of her books and records of theater performances and opera. In school, she was a quiet filly, rarely speaking, but never wrong when she answered. Rather than talking to others herself, she merely watched and analyzed. Her classmates found her odd and perhaps a little unsettling, but never threatening, and thus generally left her to her own devices.

During grade school, Rafale continued her habits of observing, but never intervening. One day, however, she noticed a classmate behaving oddly. It was the day of a test and the young colt seemed fidgety, even more so than pre-exam jitters would suggest. Rafale noticed the colt constantly glancing down at his hooves. Though she couldn’t see exactly what he was doing, she was correctly able to deduce that he had written a “cheat sheet” that had been tucked into his horseshoe which he was then using to cheat on the test. Piecing together her memories of the past week, she quickly recalled that she had seen several such slips of paper passed out by a few students in her class. While they were originally dispensed as study aids, it was immediately clear to Rafale that the versions disseminated by the ringleaders were to be used to cheat on that upcoming test. Rafale quickly reported this to the teacher, shutting down the cheating ring and in the process earning her cutie mark: a magnifying glass superimposed over a shield, symbolizing her ability to identify issues, analyze the situation, and exploit any logical vulnerability to conquer a problem.

Rafale went on to attend Canterlot University, where she excelled in academics. Shortly after graduation, she was snatched up by the Royal Equestrian Intelligence Network for her analytical skills. Though the quality of her work as a young analyst was never questioned, Rafale hit the proverbial glass ceiling quickly. When asked why she was consistently stonewalled for promotion to field agent, her superiors gave the roundabout response: “You are a very task-oriented individual and the administration thought it best to place you in an area where you could use your strengths most effectively.” Gradually, Rafale began to realize that her ability to process information and her preference for doing so had left her people skills woefully underdeveloped: reading other ponies did not constitute forging friendships or making good use of pony resources.

In an effort to improve her personal skills and perhaps gain enough bureaucratic favour for a promotion, Rafale took up a freelance job as a private investigator. Though most of her cases are petty thefts or silly suspicions, she is slowly learning to handle other ponies as ponies rather than merely sources of information.

Character Summary

Rafale can best be described as cold, calculating, and precise; the quintessential ice queen. Her razor sharp wit, eidetic memory, penchant for reading body language, and keen deductive abilities place her in a class above other investigators. Her insular nature and her tendency to dissect the personalities of those she encounters ensures she has few friends. There are of course those lucky few for whom she would move the whole of Canterlot, even if she never lets them know it.

Though she is quite comfortable in her shell, she feels envy at times for the impulsive ones who are able to throw themselves into things without care and come out on top. Rafale has a tendency to overthink things and admires those who are able to make snap decisions consistently. Because of this, she tends to favour the company of those opposite her personality type, though ponies of such a disposition will usually grow frustrated with her aloofness. It is still something she is working on.

Rafale spends her downtime meditating or reading, mostly nonfiction. Any time spent not absorbing information about the world around her or sharpening her own skills and senses is wasteful in her mind. With this conditioning comes laser-like focus and an utterly unshakable demeanor, and the best poker face this side of Las Pegasus. While her superiors appreciate her indefatigable work ethic and her impressive intellect, most of her coworkers find her intimidating and unapproachable.

It is often said that a palpable chill settles in the room whenever she enters.

Miscellaneous

Rafale speaks with a slight “fancy” accent, acquired from her parents. She is well-versed in classical theater and literature and is something of an opera critic. Those who are also connoisseurs of opera and the theater may get the rare chance to see Rafale the passionate critic rather than Rafale the detective.

Howdy; this is a really great app, Dio! I just want to deal with two minor issues first:

The one thing I feel you could expand on is to describe what sorts of ponies tend to comprise the "lucky few" that Rafale counts as her close friends. Not only will it provide enormous insight for your OC, but it'll give RPers an indication as to if their ponies have a shot at being part of the "lucky few" too.

The other more nitpicky thing is to relocate the mention of Rafale being leucetic over to the coat field. Since it's a physical description, it makes sense to mention that there instead of at the bottom of the app.

Other than that, I hope to see this character in WoE soon! :)
