Physique: Slightly taller than an average mare and a little on the slender side, though not unhealthy by any stretch of the imagination. Fit and all in all unremarkable except for her features, wings and horn alike marking her as the incredibly rare Alicorn breed.

When Twilight took the exam to enter Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, she was met with the stern gazes of the Examiners as she was ordered to hatch the egg or fail the test. Suddenly nervous and off of her game as she did not expect an exam, Twilight was unable to summon anything remotely related to magical power- performance anxiety of the highest order. After several attempts failed, she was willing to admit defeat and walk away ashamed- until the Sonic Rainboom startles her to such an extent that her magical power spiked to previously unheard of levels. She hatched the egg, all right- and Spike came out a giant dragon as her flurry of spells levitated the examiners and turned her parents into potted plants! Princess Celestia sees this enormous magical potential and after returning the situation to normal, offers to become her teacher so as to better harness her amazing power. Twilight giddily accepts, and the cutie mark appears on her flank.

History:

The history of Twilight Sparkle is in many ways the story of modern Equestria, and how a bright young unicorn has learned that greatness is earned, not given or a right by birth. Born into the loving forelegs of Crescent Sparkle and Twilight Velvet, she was the newborn sister to Shining Armor- himself a modern Equestrian icon and hero. Her early life was unremarkable for the most part, her mother instilling Twilight with a love of reading and the worlds they opened up to the mind and her father who shared with her his passion for the stars and research. Together, these traits formed the building blocks of the future. Even as a filly, Twilight's love of books and research kept her apart socially, as she preferred to spend her days engrossed in a good read or consuming new information about the world rather than spend time with her loose circle of friends and playmates. The only exception was her brother, whose innate charm and love was an immeasurably bright and shining star in her life from the earliest age. Princess Cadence would become her babysitter, and the bond they shared was the sort that grew thanks to mutual care and love that fosters in such situations. She grew up in a loving home, an Equestrian home, and this would pay dividends for all.

A few months before she would get her cutie mark she went to the Summer Sun Celebration, where for the first time she got to see in pony the royal leader of Equestria herself, Princess Celestia. She was glorious, spectacular, and when she commanded the sun to rise and it obeyed her, Twilight was transfixed by this figure that could provide such joy and warmth for all and do so so effortlessly(to a filly's eyes, anyway). It was the most amazing and uplifting experience of her life, and she was determined to learn everything she could about magic so she too could do such wonders for her fellow ponies. Her mind had been crafted to be one of the most voracious and eager students of any subject and she attacked the subject of magic with all the energy and near-madness that marks emergent genius starting to claw out from humble beginnings She did in days what took others weeks, in weeks what took other months, and in months did what took others a year. Her parents supported this earnest effort with enrollment in Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns. The only thing that stood in the way was the entrance exam. (See Cutie Mark section for details)

Princess Celestia's offer became the ignition for a life of magical fire that would burn a path unlike any before. Day in and day out she dedicated herself to the study of magic, learning everything Celestia offered and yearning for more. No manner of magic could elude her, her abilities surpassing by enormous lengths her nearest magical challengers in their own fields as well as doing so to many others in other fields as well. This unbridled passion for learning, dedication to research and experimentation, love of her role and innate talent of galactic proportions had one setback- those very unicorns whom she was so clearly superior to were bitter at her success, and while they would not risk impudent insults in her presence for fear of upsetting Celestia, they saw no need to befriend the young juggernaut. As always, Twilight socially stagnated. Her family remained strong and Spike was becoming a friend as well as assistant and charge and she always had Celestia's kindness and patience to fall back on, but her circle of friends was small and not very tight.

As she became a young mare, Twilight moved out on her own to a library under royal authority. It was the greatest possible situation for her as her appetite only grew with time. Her study of magic slowed however, though this was due more to her having learned as much as possible as quickly as she did rather than some fault of her own. This small stagnation led to her digging deeper and deeper into archives that before seemed irrelevant to her, legends and myths of lands, artifacts, and ponies long gone or never real in the first place. It was during these investigations that she stumbled upon a long lost legend detailing the Mare in the Moon and the Elements of Harmony, and the lost tales of the War of Night detailing Celestia's woeful banishment of her jealousy-consumed sister Luna to the moon. In all of her years of reading due to the love of it from her mother, the star patterns she could recite in her sleep because of father, and desire to learn more about magic thanks to Celestia, something clicked. What would seem like a legend to others seemed possible to her. She researched the topic extensively and came to believe that the Mare in the Moon was a true story, and it was going to happen soon. She warned the Princess, and her reward seemed to her to be banishment to the town of Ponyville so she could lead the preparations for the upcoming Summer Sun Celebration.

There, she would meet the ponies who would make up the other Elements of Harmony, and their exploits are many and well known. They forged friendships in a time of crisis when only they could defeat Nightmare Moon, and it was they who turned Discord to stone, who helped Cadence and Armor expel the Changelings, and who saved the Crystal Empire. These were the tentpoles that marked major events in her life, but they were little more than bookmarks in her story. The meat of it was made up of the day to day life she lived in Ponyville, learning about the power and magic of friendship through events both big and small. Her bond grew and she found that friendship was the most powerful, most wonderful magic of all. She at first thought that perhaps she had wasted so many years not making friends, but began to understand that if it wasn't for her lack of a social life, maybe the impact of her new friends in Ponyville wouldn't have been felt, maybe she wouldn't learn the lessons that she has. After all, if a mare's experiences define her, then it is her discovery of the wonders of friendship with the ponies in Ponyville that helped her become who she was meant to be.

And on a day like any other, she would discover who she was meant to be. After a spell error changed all of her pony friends forever destinies due to a task assigned by Celestia, she helped them discover their true selves through the magic of friendship- not only doing for them what they had done for her, but unknowingly proving herself ready for the next stage of her life. Upon completion of the spell, she was teleported to a realm unlike any she had ever seen. There she was informed of her success and was made an Alicorn. She would return to Ponyville and would learn she was now a Princess, and the coronation ceremony in Canterlot swiftly followed. Now she stands as the newest Princess of Equestria, a shining beacon of hope, love, friendship and an example of the qualities of hard work and dedication. With this comes a whole new slew of responsibilities and tasks, but if anypony has ever been up to the daunting task of leadership thrust upon her, it would be Twilight Sparkle.

Character Summary:

Twilight is a friendly, positive pony who has learned to see the good in all those she meets. This quality has been tested through the fires of perceived betrayal, small bouts of madness, and the general riff raff that naturally undermine good social order, but it still stands. She is willing to forgive those who wrong her, though she will also fight desperately to protect the innocent as well as friends and family. She is still wet behind the ears when it comes to some social norms, but her dual abilities to learn swiftly and adapt just as quickly have allowed her to shore up deficiencies easily enough. She came to Ponyville a social recluse and to an extent this remains the case- nothing tickles her fancy more than a good book and she adores research still- but now her social life is active and brings joy to her as well as those she is humbled to call friends.

Her magical prowess is without any hint of challenge in all of modern Equestria, and perhaps as powerful as any being since Celestia was born. While she has an absolutely stunning reserve of pure talent, she has become who she is through rigorous study and experimentation, her genius intellect fine-tuned into the perfect research tool as she chews through the archives of magical theory, application, and history with little to stop her aside from sleep. This applies outside of knowledge as well; she by nature refuses to accept something at face value should it fly in the face of good logic and research and on a few occasions has been known to obsessively attempt to understand the inherently illogical and unknowable. These incidents are just the first in a series that show the downside to the obsessiveness of her single-minded mission that pervaded her youth so totally, as her various neurotic ticks have combined to create periods of total mental breakdown. Recently she has learned several techniques that help her keep calm and relax, the most recent and successful being Cadence's breathing exercise.

Of course, many of those episodes were tied to her desire to be the best student possible for Celestia. Now that she has become a Princess and the nature of their relationship has changed, Twilight's focus and neurosis have changed as well. She still pours hours of research into the art of magic, but now finds a whole slew of new topics that are important for a Princess to understand. The Manners of Court, International Relations, Customs and Cultures of beasts of all types, economic considerations and factors and a dozen other subjects are now major shareholders of her precious time. She has yet to be given any specific task as a Princess, so she prepares for anything. She will learn everything about everything for anything could be her everything soon enough, and as a result, she is very much the same as she ever was. Neurotic to a degree with a hyper-intense focus on research and learning that can make her anxious and nervous, though now she has the confidence of at least one subject well-heeled.

Friendship is not that subject, for it is a subject of ever-evolving lessons that defy static understanding. She remains in Ponyville so she can remain with her best friends who are in many ways the tenpole of her bright existence. She doesn't value any of them over the others and looks at them all as more than just friends- she views them as extended family and even adored pieces of herself, so ingrained are they into her very being that the thought of losing their friendship tantamount to losing pieces of herself. Spike may not be one of her pony friends, but is perhaps the closest thing she has to a confidante, assistant, best friend, charge, son- their relationship has grown and evolved to such an extent that no one label can describe it. Maybe calling him her #1 Assistant will suffice. Her relationship with her family remains very strong, though the demands of her new life sometimes mean she cannot talk to them as much as she wishes. Still, when she can find time, letters, gifts, and even visits are frequent. Contact is harder with her brother, but that makes what they can share even more special and perhaps few can understand as much as he and his wife the trials and tribulations she is now undergoing.

Being called a Princess is still a bit unnerving for her, partially because she spent years revering and honoring that title's legendary holder. Still, as time passes she will get used to it, though she will always prefer simply Twilight and shuns the finery of her office in favour of her normal clothing which consists of nothing at all. What she will take a lot longer to get used to is flying, the sensation and mechanics of which are so difficult to conjure unless you were born with those innate senses that except for a few brief moments above Canterlot, she has yet to fly effectively at all. Luckily, she has some great instructors as friends and while she may never be comfortable she may soon have the capability and that is good enough.

She has chosen to remain in Ponyville and in the Golden Oaks library, which can be quite an odd sight for a traveler to see. But she wouldn't have it any other way, because in that little town not far from Canterlot she found the greatest of magics, the most awesome of power, and the most fantastic of sensations and feelings. In Ponyville she found friendship, and her heart has settled on friendship's unique ability to transform and empower her to reach heights untold- and she will do so alongside her friends or she won't do it all.
