Heidi's gaze was transfixed out her window. Hours had passed, and even though she had brought books she didn't even pick them up. She truly enjoyed gazing at the scenery, she found it simply incredible. The Painted Pinto Desert was absolutely beautiful. It was already extremely hot in the train car, but Heidi was used to the dry, arid atmosphere. Her home town was no walk in the park when it came to hot temperatures.

Heidi looked around at the other passengers. Besides herself there was Gilda, a spunky and slightly mean-spirited griffon who was already causing a bit of trouble. Still, Heidi saw something good in her under the surface. Falco Kestrelson, an older griffon who owned a pawn shop. He had already proved himself to be in possession of a strong backbone. A smaller male griffon named Razor was next to Falco, and he was already acting quite hot-headed. Miasma Vice, a classy and fierce female griffon was clearly enjoying her time on the train. Finally green-hooded Zelda was sleeping peacefully.

They were a ragtag group of griffons, but Heidi saw value in every single one of them. She would need every single one of them as they tried to steal the Black Opal from Diamond Dog territory. Hopefully none of the dogs would catch them sneaking around the desert in search of the Opal.

Heidi stared at the cracked, ragged desert floor and was reminded of her home in Aquellia. She was going to enjoy this trip quite a lot. Every once in a while she saw a lone cactus looming lazily, and she had a small laugh at their funny shapes. She hadn't seen any Diamond Dogs yet. Suddenly the train came to a screeching halt and she stood up, ready to guide her new friends across the desert.

A lone structure in the middle of nowhere is where they were being dropped off, and Heidi gazed at it apprehensively. The doors to the train opened, and the group of griffons was blasted with hot, unforgiving air. The creaky wooden structure before them looked to be hardly there at all. It was not much of a train station.

Gilda was still wondering what exactly she had gotten herself wrapped up in. Desperation had pushed her to sign up on this mysterious quest to take some black opal from a pack of slobbering mutts. It didn't sound particularly difficult. No, as far as tasks went this sounded like one Gilda could accomplish in her sleep. The hard part here was the fact that she had to flock with a bunch of featherbrains as they went after the blasted thing. Whoever wanted this thing had gotten the bright idea to hire a pack of griffons to grab it. Gilda wasn't entirely sure why so many squawkers were needed for something that seemed to simple, or really anything about the one who had hired them all. All she did know is that being a team player wasn't exactly her style.

She didn't have a lot of good things to say about this particular team either. The de facto leader of the team was some nurse named Heidi. She had a very anti-fun, group nanny attitude going that could be quite grating. The rest of the band could be just as irritating; one, Falco, was an aged ex-marine convinced he deserved her respect for it, another, Razor was a complete hothead. Then there was Miasma, who seemed to act like she knew all and was just hot stuff. Rounding them out was Zelda, a griffon with and odd sense of style and a fairly standard good guy attitude. The train ride, needless to say, had not been a lot of fun. And now Gilda had to spend even more time this lot. She could preemptively feel the headache it was going to give her.

"Alright everyone! We're here. Remember, if any Diamond Dogs ask what we're doing here tell them we're on vacation. It may look suspicious, but we can't let them find out that we're trying to take the Black Opal home with us."

Heidi spoke as they reached the train station. Gilda sighed as she looked out across the wide spanning Painted Pinto Desert. Traversing this on the way toward Gaberott wasn't going to be a lot of fun.

"I know these dogs are supposed to be stupid, but I can't see anyone believing any self-respecting intelligent creature would visit this wasteland on vacation," Gilda scoffed, rolling her eyes.

"Then again, they do live out here for some reason, so who knows," she added with a small shrug.

Falco Kestrelson couldn’t be blamed for wanting some shuteye on the journey towards the western desert. Despite having an opportunity to rely his Unyasi adventures to one griffon back when the train first left, the middle-aged ex-sergeant remained relatively unconfident that he made a good decision joining this crew. He didn’t trust in Heidi’s leadership abilities (if any) one bit, and that punk Gilda was someone that needed watching over too. In fact, Mr. Kestrelson wondered why he didn’t just quit the team back in Canterlot.

But then Falco remembered; deep down, he never liked backing down from any challenges... and this mission to collect Black Opal sounded like something that would be challenging. Just as long as the team avoided any needless confrontations with the Diamond Dogs, then everything should proceed smoothly. However, the part-time adventurer felt the need to ask one additional question to Heidi; “Say there Miss Heidi; if the Black Opal is so rare and valuable, wouldn’t the Diamond Dogs have mined out every last bit of it by now? What chance do we actually have of finding this stuff, anyway.....?”

Razor snoozed on his seat, until he heard the train come to a stop. He groaned and opened his eyes, "Ugh...wha? Are we there?"

He got up and looked out the window. Yep, they were there. Good, cause the sooner they got the rock the sooner they got paid. And the sooner he could get away from Gilda. That female was going to drive him crazy he was sure of it.

'She leaves me alone I'll leave her alone.' He thought as he got up and stretched.

He heard Falco's comment and he nodded in agreement, "My thoughts exactly. Do we just whack the dogs about if they don't give it to us? Or what?" He really felt they needed a bit more info, and nurse there didn't seem to be giving much. Razor wondered if she even knew herself of how they were going to do this.

For the love of...

"It is hot." she said calmly, stepping from the train. "It is very hot."

An understatement to be sure. The hawk-faced lioness growled in the sweltering heat. Of course, it all had to do with her attire, considering, but taking it off was a bit much to her. With any luck, they'd find the diamond dog schmucks and get the-

"Motherfeather!" she yelped, suddenly noticing the scorpion crawling onto one of her toes. She lifted the leg up and shook it violently, kicking the armored creature into a cactus, where it's thick armor caused it to simply bounce off the spiny plant.

Muttering to herself and adjusting her tie, Miasma began quietly hating the desert and those that decided to live there and awaited orders from the head cheese on this op.

The hooded griffon groaned as she awoken from her rather lengthy slumber, "We there yet?". While normally the hot weather would not have bothered the griffon as she was raised in Rockwington and spent a good deal of her life in an forge, Zelda was not entirely a fan of the sudden shift in temperatures. She slowly rubbed her eyes and scooted up into a more proper seating position. "Yep. We're in a desert alright. Sandy sand. Lots of cactus. Those tumble-weed things. Next time I go off and do something crazy like this, I'm making sure my quest leads me somewhere nicer, like the Gallopocus Islands.", the quick burst of steamy wind made her feel like she was back working on the forge.

"Vacation? Not sure what you'd come over here to see. Do they have even ghost towns here?", she slowly made her way up and gathered whatever she had brought with her and waited for the others to move, "Heard when it's not steamy hot during the day, it's pretty cold during the night. Hope you birds brought something warm to wear during those times. I didn't bring this just for the pockets!", she followed her flock off the train.

"So we're here. What's next?", Zelda asked as she glanced around the infamous 'Painted Pinto Desert'.
