Name: Sunset Shimmer

Species: Unicorn, but currently takes a human teenager’s form in the “Mirror World”.

Physique: Typical of a mare/teenager her age.

Occupation: Senior Class president and fallen student of Princess Celestia.

Cutie Mark: Sunset’s cutie mark is a sun with curvy rays. The rays to the left are pale yellow coloured, while those to the right are dark red. In the center of the sun are shapes reminiscent of a counter-clockwise yin yang symbol; the left coloured in a vivid red and the right shape is vividly yellow. This cutie mark represents Sunset Shimmer’s fiery passion to succeed as well as her superb ability in magic.

Even though she was already one of the top students in Princess Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns, Sunset Shimmer constantly found herself subject to the attention of her hyper-present mother. Sunset knew her mum only wanted her to succeed, but the fiery filly nonetheless got sick of all the repeated demands to study harder. With the Winter Solstice coming up in a month’s time, Miss Shimmer conjured a plan so bold that if she could pull it off, it would finally lay her mother’s fears to rest. The young unicorn’s plan: to show her mum how she could keep the sun from setting on the eve of the longest night!

Sunset Shimmer’s friends naturally found her scheme to be ludicrous and a waste of time, but the hothead wouldn’t listen. For an entire month, she dug through her school’s library trying to learn everything there was to know about raising and setting the sun. When the big day finally came, she tried doing what no simple unicorn had done in more than a thousand years... and failed to make the sun even slow down its decent. At that dark moment however, Sunset’s pals emerged to cheer the filly on in her seemingly-quixotic quest; buoyed by their support, Miss Shimmer with what little magical strength she had left finally managed to make halt in the sky for a few seconds before passing out.

When Sunset Shimmer came to, she saw not only saw her mother’s awestruck face, but that of the serene Princess Celestia herself. Admiring the filly’s sheer will and determination to perform an impossible task, Celestia guessed the Sunset could one day bear the Element of Magic. Further comforted that the young unicorn knew what it meant to have friends, the Princess felt no reservation in making Sunset Shimmer her new personal student. Overwhelmed by this turn in events, the filly laughed in joy as a cutie mark formed on her flank.

History:

For the first years of her life, Sunset Shimmer chafed as her mother spent much of her time driving her to be the best; the best of the best! When it turned out Sunset had a rare general affinity for magic, the mother immediately applied her daughter for enrollment in Princess Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns. Understanding the genuine talent she had, Sunset opted to undertake the entrance examination, which she passed with little difficulty. Despite all the well-intended interference Sunset experienced from her mum, she was at least able to make a few friends at school.

Everything changed however when Sunset Shimmer became Princess Celestia’s personal student. Satisfied that Sunset had reached the pinnacle of magical success, the filly regularly found herself involved with Canterlot high society. Constantly lapping up the never-ending praise from Equestria’s pampered elite, Miss Shimmer was not adequately prepared to handle it all with humility. Thus, she let everything get into her head; if Sunset was just as important as these elite ponies, wasn’t she entitled to the same respect and fame as they? Sure enough, she gradually transformed into an egotistical spoiled brat who felt superior to everyone else. Anypony who thought otherwise she brushed aside.

And so Princess Celestia’s School became a nightmarish place; the student body divided between those who formed a cult of personality around Princess Celestia’s star pupil, and those who didn’t. Sunset Shimmer’s relationship with her mother soured as well out of her new rebellious streak, and the impatience apprentice even grew disgruntled over her royal mentor’s supposedly-slow pace of teaching. This state of affairs didn’t last for long though; united in their determination to do something about their chief tormentor, the students who didn’t follow Sunset Shimmer rallied to get Celestia to do something about her student... which of course she did. The regal alicorn gave Sunset a chance to mend her ways, but the offer of reconciliation came too late.

Infuriated that Princess Celestia dared to reprimand somepony as incredibly gifted in magic as herself, Sunset Shimmer burned what bridges she had left and abandoned Princess Celestia’s School for good. Tired of her overbearing mother, tired of Celestia’s pointless authority... the unicorn didn’t want to put up with any of that lameness anymore. Instead, Sunset worked temporary odd-jobs while she advanced her magical studies. But even that was not enough, for the fallen student desired a return to the old times when everypony singed her praises. Eventually, the devious Miss Shimmer thought up of a plan to do just that.

Figuring out that Princess Celestia kept a magic mirror which opened a gateway to a mysterious world every thirty moons, Sunset Shimmer took her chances and without anypony knowing, leapt into the mirror at the proper time. At the other end of the portal was a strange world instead; one where bipedal humans reigned instead of ponies, and one where Sunset’s magic powers didn’t work! It took time, but the girl adjusted to her new human body and learned all that she could about this “Mirror World”.

Entering Canterlot High School as a freshman student, Sunset Shimmer initially feigned friendliness as she sought to make herself known to her classmates. Once she won the vote for Princess of the Fall Formal, she made her true colours known. Not repeating the same mistakes as last time, Sunset adopted a strategy of “divide and conquer”, playing everyone against one another to keep them too busy to oppose her machinations.

Now beginning her senior year, Miss Shimmer’s expecting her master plan to pay off dividends. The portal back to Equestria is set to open soon, and the meticulous planner knows just the tool she’d need to use magic in the “Mirror World”. Once she gets her hands on the Element of Magic, Sunset Shimmer will have everything she needs to completely assert her control over Canterlot High, and she’ll make the foolish Princess pay for snubbing her long ago! Anybody else who stands in Sunset’s way will also pay dearly!

Character Summary:

Warped by years of resentment, Sunset Shimmer now lives by a dog-eat-dog philosophy where the fittest animals know how to bite and punch; animals that don’t become someone else’s lunch. To that end, Sunset goes to considerable lengths to ensure that the world revolves around her and to oppose those who dare challenge her in any way. To make sure that her alpha-dog status in Canterlot High remains secure, the fiery girl makes every effort to crush unity among the student body, whether it may be school pride or a simple but strong friendship.

As part of keeping her reign of terror alive and well, Sunset Shimmer does her best to present herself as a model child to the school faculty and to her adoptive parents, who oddly resemble her authority figures back in Equestria (Sunset apparently convinced everyone that she previously ran away from home, while even the impostor knows nothing about where her human counterpart currently is). While the teenager takes her schoolwork seriously and fakes respect towards her elders, she feels free to openly mock and harass her fellow students as she pleases. Never making attempts to show friendliness towards her own age group, Miss Shimmer only bothers socializing with that have angered her or those she feels she can use.

In lieu of magic, Sunset Shimmer instead works in her free time on being savvy with technology and social media. The girl happens to be very skilled in the art of online video creation, and in fact earns significant income from a legitimate vlog series where she rants about stupid crazes among her age group. Videos are also Sunset’s primary means of humiliating and slandering her perceived rivals. However, Miss Shimmer’s most vital skill is that of hacking; thanks to her ability to remotely break into anybody’s cellphone or social website account, the twisted bully can wreck havoc on any friendship with lies and deceit.

Even though Sunset Shimmer takes pride in playing people like fiddles, she still has certain needs like any other human (or pony). When the stress of her life gets too much for her, the girl finds that wasting away virtual enemies and trash-talking her opponents in online games is especially therapeutic. In the secrecy of her temporary residence, Sunset also takes to watching fantasy movies and TV shows; most of them may be pretty cheesy, but they also tend to remind her of home back in Equestria. For a while, Miss Shimmer also had her emotional needs met by a charming boyfriend named Flash Sentry; her efforts to harshly emotionally control his life eventually did that relationship in, and Sunset will make sure he especially pays for his backstabbing!

When stripped of her rotten persona and goals, Sunset Shimmer is deep in her heart a girl who just wants to be appreciated for who she is without having to excessively work harder at it than others. Only time will tell if she sees the error of her ways and realizes how many people she’s hurt. Until then, expect the hotheaded rebel to fume and rage while she daydreams about defeating that ancient fossil Princess Celestia with an army of lumbering brainwashed humans. She’ll teach them all someday, just they wait and see.....!
