Occupation: Guardpony in the Royal Equestrian Army.

Cutie Mark: Flash Sentry’s cutie mark is a yellow lightning bolt superimposed on a blue kite shield, with the shield slightly lighter in the upper left and lower right corners. This cutie mark reflects Flash’s desire to use his talents for the well-being of others.

Flash Sentry was overjoyed one fine birthday when his father gave him that electric guitar he’d been eying in a Cloudsdale shop for months. Highly motivated, the young colt spent a good chunk of his free time learning how to play it and sing vocals as well. Not entirely unexpectedly, Flash proved to possess talent as a musician... but something in the back of his mind kept the boy from fully embracing this path in life. Not even when he performed well in a school talent show did he feel an all-encompassing sense of accomplishment and worth. If he had a talent for guitar-playing, why wasn’t the frustrated colt earning a cutie mark?

Sometime after that school talent show however, one of the ponies who saw Flash Sentry perform came to him asking for help. The mare sought to organize a charity concert to provide foals staying in the Cloudsdale Hospital with new toys, and she sought ponies like Flash to play his music there. Always one to lend a hoof, the colt agreed to handle the opening act. Flash may not have been either among the most famous or talented of musicians at the benefit concert, the event turned out to be a smashing success. When he finally witnessed the happy foals at the hospital receiving their new toys, the young Mr. Sentry finally found joy in himself. Realizing that his true source of happiness had been “paying it forward” all along, Flash swiftly discovered his cutie mark at last.

History:

With his mother in the Royal Equestrian Army and his father a manager in Cloudsdale’s Weather Factory, it was not by chance that Flash Sentry internalized his core behaviors of being chivalrous and dependable from an early age. His love for the guitar also began around this time, having been impressed by a spectacular rock concert his dad took him to see. Yet it wasn’t until Flash learned that he could merge his hobby with his values that his passion for music really took off. In his view, music doesn’t accomplish much unless it’s ultimately made for a higher purpose.

Flash Sentry found himself rather well-liked in Flight School, his friends appreciating how reliable and laid-back of a friend he was. The colt additionally served well as an exemplary member of the Foal Scouts, and he stayed in that organization throughout the rest of his youth. Mr. Sentry was by all accounts a colt that everypony would want to call their son; in return, the pegasus couldn’t have asked for a more loving family, even if his mum was away on REA duty most of the time.

As hinted by his cutie mark, Flash Sentry did not regard playing music as his primary destiny in life. Upon reaching adulthood, the young stallion opted to fulfill his need to serve others by enlisting in the Royal Equestrian Army, just like his mother before him. Thanks to all his years in the Foal Scouts, Flash made it through boot camp remarkably fine; Private Sentry even earned an automatic bump in his pay grade on account of his applicable life experiences.

Despite enjoying the opportunities that military life brings, Pvt. Sentry does not envision making a long career in the REA... at least not yet, anyway. It’ll all have to depend on how rewarding he finds his job as a guardpony. If he does retire from the service though, Flash intends to return back to Cloudsdale, raise a family, and become a troop leader in the Foal Scouts. In the meantime, he’ll keep on creatively expressing himself through his music whenever he can.

Character Summary:

As a relative newcomer to the REA, Pvt. Flash Sentry has not had much of a chance to make a name for himself yet. So far, his unit's only deployment of note has been supplementing security at a summit in the Crystal Empire. As far as military procedures go, Pvt. Sentry does everything by the book and always treats his superior officers with absolute deference. While the pegasus isn’t known to be the type to take command over a situation, the young stallion goes above and beyond to courteously assist civilians in need or his fellow guardponies. Pvt. Sentry may not exactly be NCO-material, but he’s slated for a rewarding REA career nonetheless.

When he needs to pass the time between shifts, Flash Sentry plays guitar and write music mostly for his own personal enjoyment. To that end, the vast majority of the stallion’s songs are either geared towards advancing a good cause or being capable of uplifting spirits. While he’s not completely above the occasional slice-of-life or romantic song, Flash finds little satisfaction in them and doesn’t incorporate such songs in his repertoire. After all, why coon about love when nearly all other famous singers and bands do the same thing already? Isn’t it better to use music to make more of a difference?

Should an off-duty Flash Sentry require a break from his musical pursuits, he can usually be found hanging out at ice cream parlors, attending Wonderbolts air shows, or reading genre fiction. Particularly, Flash is a proud fan of the Daring Do franchise; he may not spend too much money on acquiring Daring Do merchandise, but once in a blue moon, he’ll write a song inspired by the heroine and her exploits. Flash Sentry does his best to offer friendship to everypony, but the stallion inevitably prefers the company of those he finds especially strong-willed and intelligent.

Most ponies who meet Flash Sentry see a pegasus who is unflappably friendly, never afraid of enduring embarrassment and criticism, and keeps cool under all pressure. All of those things are true, but the young stallion also happens to be morbidly afraid of confrontation at all cost. If faced with somepony who bothers him, Flash will almost hardly ever call that pony out on their poor behavior even it if it made more sense to simply speak his mind. The pegasus also gets in binds whenever ponies relay to him their most personal issues; he can’t help but remain quiet out of fear of upsetting someone’s feelings. For these reasons, Flash encounters severe difficulty should he feel the compulsion pull out of a toxic friendship.

Pvt. Flash Sentry doesn’t know what the future will bring, but he’s eager to take it on with vigor. Whatever challenge he might face, the young stallion will do so with boundless optimism and integrity, never selling out his principles and passions for any reason at all. Anypony who has earned the sincere respect of Flash Sentry will have earned a true, true friend indeed.....
