SNOWBALL WAR! (Open)

It was a cold and snowy Hearth’s Warming Season, and snow covered all the land as far as the eye could see. It took an entire week for the Ponyville weather team to get everything snowed in right; to make sure that not one spot appeared undercovered except for walking paths and train tracks, and that every body of water got coated with a thick enough layer of ice so that anypony could safely skate across it at will. So naturally, members of the weather team weren’t immune to enjoying the fruits of their own labors.

One electrical weather specialist 1st class had a peculiarly juvenile way to express her love of the season. Hidden behind a bush next to a pathway was a scarf-wearing googly-eyed pegasus that everyone knew and loved… to the best of their abilities, at any rate. Derpy Hooves held in her hoof a snowball; one poised to ambush the next oblivious pony who trotted by. If she was lucky, she could even instigate a snowball fight, the likes of which Ponyville hasn’t seen since… last winter!

Miss Hooves kept as quiet as a mouse as she waited for her first victim.....

The winter season had come and Presteza was prepared. With the help of her friend, Rarity she had found a great winter outfit for herself. Instead of her usual straw hat she now wore a rather festive hat with white puff on the top of it. She still had her scarf wrapped around her neck, it was one of the only seasons where wearing this accessory was entirely appropriate. On each hoof she wore a mint green hoof-warming glove that matched her cap perfectly.

Despite being so far from her home city of Trottingham she was always happy during this season. Ever since she was a filly she loved to romp and play in the snow, even before she knew her destiny as a painter she loved expressing her creativity by building snow-ponies. Together the two foals would work to mold the snow, Pressy choosing how they'd pose the snowy creation... and her brother making sure the snow was perfectly and neatly pat down. Speaking of which, she heard her big brother was in Ponyville on leave again while she had yet to run into him yet she was sure she'd see him at some point in the night but for now...

"SNOW-PONIES!"She shouted ecstatically to nopony in particular in the area, inadvertently alerting a certain grey pegasus to her presence. Galloping over to snowiest of area she began to roll a ball of snow until it got bigger and bigger and bigger.

"This is gonna be the biggest snow-pony in history!"

"So, this is Hearth's Warming," Raven Duskwing said in her deadpanned tone as she walked along the snowy road, looking at the event before her. She knew that ponies had to deal with winter one way or another, but never would she imagine that they would be having fun doing so. She made a note to research what this Hearth's Warming Eve meant as it looked fun for her. Of course she wasn't about to try anything silly, but still she wanted to try to meet some ponies to see what they were like.

With her thoughts fixed on looking around, Raven felt somepony bump into her! She looked down to see a cream colored earth pony mare with an orange mane and tail shaking as if she hit a wall.

"Hey, watch where you're..." Carrot Top said before she looked up and saw who she was talking to. The pony quickly took off before Raven could apologize.

"Sorry," she said with a shrug as she watched the pony disappear in the crowd, briefly noticing her cutie mark, "Maybe she likes carrots."

Raven continued, unaware of and surprise that was to happen to the blueish black griffon.

Bon Bon was a mare with a schedule as thick and active as a Princess, though hers revolved around getting gifts for ponies and getting her business back to square uno instead of messing around with the goings on of state. She'd wager that her life was more hectic because she didn't have a fleet of attendants at her beck and call and her success was not assured by mere adulation from the citizenry. Bon Bon would make a fine Princess. A tired Princess, but a fine one all the same. She could make sweeping edicts just like they could and everypony would fawn over like a newborn babe! Someday. At the very least she'd get treated as such by Lyra, who would probably do it anyway. How fast could she wave her with an oversized green leaf? Not fast enough for one very, very tired mare.

The perk in her step had been defeated by the ravages of the snow-felled day as she trotted back into town. The path around her was beautiful, the left side of it covered by a row of hedges and bushes and the right, after about three trees lining the path, an open field stretching into the horizon. A beautiful sight, even if she wasn't one for exploring. A stack of important business paperwork stuffed her saddlebag and was covered by a few salad chips. Enough to get her through the day at least. Hopefully. As long as nothing too bad happened. She felt so overworked and it would be so much fun to relax but just a little longer lil' Bonnie- peace was hoofsteps away and nothing stood in her way! Off to her right a pair of odd yelling ponies were having their way with the snow putting Bon Bon between the bushes and hedge and them, but no matter. Peace was at hoof!

Octavia stood on the corner of the street. Her cello was a covered in a bit of snow drift as the wind pushed the sheet that lay on the ground over herself and her instrument. She wore a very festive green costume that resembled that of an elf pony from the old mare's tales that were strewn about for the season. Whenever it was winter like this she loved to play around town, no matter where she was. Now that she had a business in ponyville, she decided that it would do some good to advertise for the music store. In fact, that was what she was doing. Instead of her normal, mahogany brown cello that she had for such a long time, she now was a using a custom made instrument, one that was made by a very fine music company that made most of the specialty instruments that Octavia played. This one was red to contrast with Octavia's green costume. It had silver and green bells tied everywhere it wouldn't bother the sound. There was green holly decorations all over the instrument that provided some of the best looks that it could. She placed down her cello and twirled her red bow.

She pulled the bow over the strings, and with one last look at the crowd that past by, Octavia pulled back and began to play the theme that was always sung during the hearth's warming eve plays that Octaiva so loved to watch. She found the singing of the children combined with the lovely voices of the children to actually be quite harmonic. She made sure that there was nothing around her, of course, that could cause a problem with her song. There only seemed to be a bunch of ponies, a griffin, and a snowy bush across from her. Everything was perfect...or so it seemed.

Derpy only had to wait a few minutes before a target rich environment presented itself. One unrecognizable unicorn was off making snowponies, some griffon was around too, a cellist played a tune not too far away, and there went Bon Bon slowly ambling by looking at everything else. Miss Hooves only had one snowball to throw before losing the element of surprise, so she’d have to pick her target carefully.

After a second of clearly carefully thinking, Derpy settled on that light orange unicorn mare assembling the snowpony. She wasn’t all that far away, was more stationary, and if she timed it right, could strike the snowball at the unicorn just as Bon Bon waltzed past by. The unicorn would think Bonnie aimed the snowball at her, ensuring plenty of misdirected ice-cold retaliation!

Right as Bon Bon got in between Derpy and the unicorn, the googly-eyed pegasus emerged from her hiding spot to cast her snowball towards its equine destination. Miss Hooves was a pro at the art of snow warfare, and had plenty of faith that her spherical projectile would find its mark right at the unicorn’s paintbrush cutie mark.....

Seems like the park was already starting to liven up, a whole bunch of faces showing up. As the mare began to pat down and shape the snow she began to sing the carol that belonged to the evening and all the ponies who loved it.

"The fire of friendship lives in our hearts, as long as it burns we cannot drift ap-aarck!!" in the middle of the song she felt a cold ball of snow collide with the cutie mark on her plot. Doing an immediate about-face she turned to see a cream colored earth pony behind her, she must be the perpetrator!

"So... it's a fight yer lookin' for, eh? well then!" the silver maned unicorn gained a positively devilish grin that could make anypony gulp at the almost predator like intentions behind it. Moving behind her snowpony which was still in it's ball stage, she had managed to get the snow patted down solidly enough that it would hold together and made it spherical enough that it could roll perfectly. If it was a fight this earth pony wanted... than she was in fer the snowball fight of her life! With a forceful push of her hindlegs she sent the ball rolling towards both Bon Bon and the unseen Grey pegasus behind her. If the two did get caught in the rolling ball the worst that would happen would be that they'd get caught in it for a few moments before it dispersed when it collided with something.

"Let the games begin!"

Bon Bon had so many grand plans for the rest of the day, all of which revolved around getting home safely and without trouble. She could start with a nice fire, warming up the cold mare on this cold holiday as she and Lyra did what they did every night. Just talk. Then after that, marshmallows, and some really fine ones at that. Then they's give each other gifts and spend the rest of the night using those gifts to have a bit of fun. It was going to be a ball at home and she was pretty darn excited.

She was a bit thirsty, though. She bent down to get a little old sip of water from her awkwardly placed canteen, unaware of the Derpy assault being launched. It was strange that even in the depths of a icey winter you felt this need for water just as acutely as if you had spent time in the desert. Ah, the pony body was an amazing thing! Lyra had an even more amazing-er body though. She won the Running of the Leaves once upon a time and could handle all of Bon Bon's chocolates. Uggh. Bon Bon was getting fat. She needed more exercise.

Such thoughts flooded her mind and little else occured as the paint mare was hit and lookeftowards Bon Bon as the source of her snow troubles. Bon Bon for her self jhsd decided a quick check up on her saddlebag was in order, leafing through the papers with as much lethargy as she could fail to muster. This took her attention off of what was happening, the sounds around her commonplace and ignored as part of holiday cheer. This meant that she got her bag locked back up just as the ball rolled over her, encasing her in a snowy doom and rolling her right into Derpy. The duo then rolled into a tree, where the snowball failed to survive the impavt and left the two ponies tangled in a mess.

It had felt like getting hit by a train. A snowy fluffy train of love, but a snowy fluffy train nonetheless. Momentary thoughts of vindictiveness filled her as she shook her head free of the white, eyes slowly rolling until they came to and focused on...

"Derpy, Of course," She deadpanned, utterly unimpressed and completely bemused at the mare tangled up with her in the snowball. Figures. FIGURES IT WOULD BE DERPY.

Huh; magic could be used to create super-sized snowballs now? So amazed was Derpy Hooves amazed by this rolling work of art that she didn’t think of stepping out of its path. By the time the idea came to her, the ball of ice-white frozenness had already collided, leaving the gray pegasus on top of Bon Bon in the ensuing aftermath.

Rolling her way off of the earth pony, Derpy needed to correct something before recommencing snowball-related hostilities. “I didn’t do it!” she definitely retorted, pointing at the light orange unicorn; “It was that unicorn's giant snowball; fight her back!” Even as she finished speaking, Miss Hooves proceeded to scoop up her next batch of snow.....

(I know it is not my turn, but considering the situation as well as how we need to get this moving, I'm posting)

So, this wasn't Derpy's doing? Funny. She was the reason Bon Bon found herself in need of all this paperwork to rebuild her business. In a roundabout way, any complication she had during this trip she could very easily lay at the disaster prone mare's hooves. But she wasn't to direvtly blame this time, a helpless and hapless victim of the same mare. Uggh, it figured. She couldn't even go home without something happening to her! It couldn't have been that today would be happy and silly only after she had kept her important documents in her safe place at home. Nope. Not. Of course not. Well, that meant she had only one way out.

If this orange paint mare was wanting to make it difficult for her to get home, then by Celestia Bon Bon wasn't going to take it in stride. Derpy readied a snowball as she spoke and Bon Bon found herself doing likewise subconsciously. Yeah. Yeah, they were going to have to fight their way out. Bon Bon tucked her saddlebag carefully behind the tree, hidden and secure, and started rolling some up.

"Yeah, I guess you're right. Roll faster!" She encouraged-slash-demanded her pegasus ally, getting a few snowballs with her and crawling up to the berm to get a nice view of the orange mare. Yeah, yeah, there she was, darn magical user. Might be tough going solo seeing as unicorns could probably catch them mid-air...but if they rapid fired snowballs, some were bound to get through. Plus it'd keep her on the defensive!

"I throw, you create!" Bon Bon said as she started fastballing the snowballs right at that paint mare!

As she watched the ponies moving about in the snow, Raven Duskwing caught sight of a snowball that struck a yellow unicorn right in the flank. It didn't seem to hurt the mare, but it surprised him enough to look and see who threw the ball. Instead of ignoring it, the mare retaliated by sending a huge ball that caught two ponies in the white mass.

"So, these ponies want to be hit by spheres of snow? Seems odd, but if they wish..."

The griffoness scooped some snow into a pile using her wings and formed a ball that was about as big as her before turning around and giving the ball a swift kick with her hind paws, letting it roll towards the yellow unicorn who threw the big snowball.

The unicorn chuckled and smirked as her massive snowball plowed it's path of destruction and captured the earth pony, having failed to notice the gray pegasus. "Hah! That'll learn ya!" Said the yellow unicorn with a triumphant smile,"Now ya better give up before I get serious!"

She didn't seem to get a reply immediately she shouted down towards the two mares by the tree. hold on a second, tow of them? She thought there was only one pony, the earth mare who threw the snowball, but now there was familiar looking gray pegasus. The wheels in her head clicked into place and soon Presteza realized who she was, she never forgot a face and this mug belongs to none other than the pegasus she'd saved from getting trampled by a fiery unicorn during the running of the leaves, having repaid her for freeing her and everypony else from a sticky situation involving sap.

"Hey there, Der--" the unicorn was cut off by a snowball that caught her in the mouth, soon there was a flurry of snowballs being hurled by the pony she'd directed her giant snowball towards. After a few cough she ran off and hid behind a snowbank... only to be hit by another large snowball that was kicked toward her by a griffon. Poking her head out of the snowmound she grinned and began forming a few snowballs in her hooves and throw one at the griffon,"oh ya want some too, huh? well catch!"

Quillhart was in a great hurry! The stallion had been running around ponyville in his scavenge for gifts. Luckily did the stallion not have that many family members to provide to but he didn't want to leave out on his friends. He was carrying a pile of presents in his saddlebag and he even balanced a couple of them on his back. The most important present was kept in his mouth, It was a fairly small object, just big enough to fit in his mouth without making it look awkward. It was to a very special pony. Or... to be fully honest... Quill actually wasn't quite certain yet whether he'll give it to her or not. Sure, he wanted to, but he was also very afraid of the reactions it could bring. Anyways, he knew that Pressy was in Ponyville today and he longed to find her. The brown pony had even bought pizza with extra hay for the whole purpose of inviting her to chat with him. Just to play it safe, of course. The pizza was carefully balanced on his head, supported by the edge of his glasses, which made it harder for him to see where he was going.

The stallion swiftly scooted into the snowy landscape and, without throwing a glance, did he trot with rapid steps and obscured sight. Quillhart was even trotting the very moment the giant ball of snow hit his side. Without a seconds thought of screaming was he swept and swirled into the white pillow-soft snowball. He dropped his presents by plain surprise and the present for Presteza disappeared inside the ball while the pizza took off from his head and flew in a curved route towards the grey mare's cello. Good gracious, if only that pizza wouldn't strike its goal. That instrument looks expensive. Quillhart felt a bit of panic evolving in his head when he dropped the present. The trip, however, was soon over and Quillhart found himself in a pile of snow along with another pony. Shaking his head and spitting out some snow, did Quillhart finally look up at the pony who shared his fate. "P-Pressy?" He suddenly couldn't get his words straight when he looked up at the beautiful mare who already had returned to battle. He had never seen her in her winter outfit, and though she would obviously get around nicely with any outfit, he had to admit that she looked very, very pretty. His glaring was abruptly interrupted by a swift snowball which dashed into his face and made his glasses fly off in an impressive speed. "Ow!" He yelled, as he loosened himself from the snow and stumbled back and forth around the field in a search for his glasses. His hoofs touched a small object and he knew exactly what it was as soon as he felt it. It was a thin, rectangular object, wrapped with paper. The stallion quickly laid it inside the saddlebag and took a sigh of relief, the present was secured. Now if he only could find those glasses...

"I throw, you create!"

It finally occurred to Derpy Hooves that she had seen that unicorn mare before! Her name was Presteza, and she won second place during this year’s Running of the Leaves. Too bad Derpy didn’t think of this before casting another snowball at Pres. Maybe in a different time and a different place, the two mares could have established a strong bond of friendship over a hot cup of coco. But sadly, a battlefield of snow kept them apart as foes… at least until they all got bored with their snow war.

In the meantime, Derpy dutifully followed the orders of her brave captain, Bon Bon, by providing the earth pony with more snowballs. In a past time in a past place, they would have instead been bitter foes; well, “bitter foes” was too strong of a term, but Miss Hooves had recognized that her connection with Bon Bon had gone cold over the last few months. Something to do with lightning, a market stand, and piles of hardware store goods; it wasn’t entirely all that clear what had transpired. Nonetheless, it is often said that the enemy of your enemy is your friend, and today, a common opponent united Derpy Hooves and Bon Bon.

But even as she crafted snowballs, the googly-eyed pegasus recalled how she managed to win so many snowball fights; “Hey, shouldn’t we just get a snowcloud and dump snow all over her? It’ll be more effective than throwing these things at Pressy all day.....”

Octavia peered out over the snowy field of war that was taking place. The battle was quite enchanting. Octavia, perhaps wouldn't be participating in it. It wasn't something in her nature to do so. Instead she looked to the little foal, the odd looking blonde mare in the bushes, the mousy, albeit intelligent looking stallion, the mare with candy for a cutie mark, and the griffion and gave a small smile, she was reminded a bit of her home during the winter. She stopped playing and froze for a second, then with a bit of a shiver, she started playing a much faster song, a song fit for a snowball war.

The assault on the paint mare continued, Bon Bon allowing for the walls of loathing that had been built between her and Derpy to be broken in the name of burying the unicorn in a sea of white. Derpy was good with the weather making and therefore the snow compiling and Bon Bon had years and years of precise chocolate making that somehow, someway, translated into snowball accuracy. She wasn't questioning it. Just as she was happily pelting the now fleeing mare with snowballs, another sortie landed on her from a third party. A griffon! What had that unicorn done to incur such wrath? No matter. Where she was had good cover, making it hard for Bon Bon to hit her. Waste of snowballs.

Not a good snowball attack strategy. As a song filled the air in perfect harmony with the warmaking not far from her, Derpy blasted out with her own idea. It wouldn't work- unicorns could just catch the mass, even send it back! But it would serve as a distraction, and Derpy had proven to be a shockingly effective creator of snowballs. A strategy formulated in her head and she abandoned for a moment throwing snowballs and grabbed her saddlebag, creating a depression at the top and throwing Derpy's successfully made snowballs into the depression.

"Yeah, yeah, that's a good idea. You go ahead and do that!" She offered with encouragement, as veiled as it was. Derpy would provide a good distraction for her to flank the unicorn. As Derpy did her thing, Bon Bon galloped a bit down the hedgerow that covered their side of the road. When she was down a bit, she jumped over it and galloped onto the side of the field with Pressy near a row of trees. Hopefully she would be too distracted by the others to see her.

Raven gave a brief smile as the snowball made contact with the pony. While she certainly didn't want to hurt the pony, but to taking others by surprise seemed to be the object of this snowball war.

"You were surprised, weren't... oof!" Raven said as a snowball hit her in the mouth, causing her to spit out some water. Of course the griffon expected a retaliation from the unicorn but it took her by surprise nonetheless. She grabbed two talons full of snow and shaping them into spheres she threw one at the unicorn. Before throwing the other she paused as a grey pegasus floated above a nearby cloud which she threw a ball at for her next target.

"P-Pressy?"

The mare's ear's perked as she heard a familiar voice beside her,"Quill?" The yellow unicorn smiled at the earth pony who now shared the unfortunate fate of being partially submerged in a large former snowball. Pressy had seen him in a while, not since the Grand Galloping Gala. She really didn't know too much about the stallion due to the ending of the Gala coming before they could get better acquainted, but he seemed like a nice enough stallion.

"How've ya been, ma--" once again the mare was cut off by the arrival of another snowball hitting her, this time not so much in the face but instead being momentarily skewered upon her horn and then falling apart,"jus' can't catch a breather on the battlefield, huh? Come on Quill let's show these ponies how to fight with snow!" sad the mare as she pulled herself out and began to nimbly dodge several of the snowballs that were lobbed at her. The griffon that joined in the fray seemed the most dangerous foe at the moment, her claws and talons seemed to make it easy to form snowballs quicker and possibly lob them more accurately, it also looked like her previous snowball aimed at the griffoness had hit it's mark as mid sentence she was interrupted as well.

"You were surprised, weren't... oof!"

"Hah, take that miss... uh... actually wot's yer name again?" For now it seemed the mare was a bit preoccupied with the griffin so Bonbon and Derpy's plan looked like it might just work! With the mare focused so intently on avoiding the snowballs being lobbed at her by her feathered adversary she definately wasn't noticing Bonbon sneaking up behind the hedge.

A quick look at the sky above revealed a fatal flaw in Derpy’s strategy; not a cloud could be found for miles around! Apparently, the rest of the Weather Team did a very efficient job of clearing the skies above Ponyville this fine winter day. Maybe there were suitable clouds around the Everfree Forest area, but the snow battle would be over by the time Miss Hooves brought back her snowcloud. Clearly a new plan was needed!

Derpy Hooves took great care to hurry along her brainstorming, lacking the time to evaluate the consequences of any potential action. Thinking of how that show-off unicorn conjured a giant snowball, the pegasus reckoned she needed to do something much more impressive to win the day. After a few moments of recollecting her Weather Team experiences, the winged combatant knew what to do!

Back up in the air, Derpy swiftly flew a circle over Pressy and her buddy, going faster with each rotation. She may be just one average pegasus not capable of achieving great feats of weather on her own, but the young mare had a special pegasi magic trick up her sleeve. If Miss Hooves spun around fast enough, she could generate enough wingpower to create a little something called a snow devil; a miniature whirlwind that could cover every combatant around with snow. Unless somepony stopped the weathermare, Derpy Hooves could have her snow devil completely operational in fifteen seconds’ time.

Creating the whirlwind was be the easy part; controlling it would be the real challenge.....
