Roleplay Type: Canterlot Chronicles

Name: Craven

Sex: Male

Age: Older adolescence

Species: Winged dragon

Eye Color: Glowing orange

Body Color: Craven's scales are golden red, the softer undersides of his wings and belly are a pale orange, and the five long sharp spikes on his neck are light brown in color.

Physique: On account of his immense greed, Craven is twice the size of an ordinary adolescent dragon. The drake requires significant growth yet to reach adult-size, but even so, the young Craven is a physically-formidable force to be reckoned with. Both his neck and his tail are long and slender, while his mouth is shaped like a pointed beak. As a result of constant physical training, Craven's body is an evenly mixture of bulkiness and leanness.

Residence: Deep within the Dragon Peaks region, inside an extinct lava tube just starting to become stuffed with riches.

Occupation: Kidnap ponies for ransom. Also willing to perform high-paying mercenary work for nefarious clients.

Unique Traits: Despite being large for a winged dragon his age, Craven is among the more swift-flying of his kind. He doesn’t stand a chance of outflying the fastest pegasi and griffons, but the dragon can easily catch up to slower fliers. With extra practice in its use, the fiery breath of Craven is also one of the hottest and longest-ranged of all adolescent fire drakes. A keen sense of smell he possesses too; Craven can identify any sentient creature just by using his nose.

History:

Like many dragons, Craven was hatched away from confines of civilization. His parents established their domain on the volcanic Fire Foal Island; a suitably fiery place for fire-breathing wyrms to live in. However, what set apart the young Craven from the rest of his age group was his exceptionally greedy disposition; the baby dragon craved absolutely anything that he didn’t own, and so he took to routine burglary of dragon hoards to sate his desires. Craven swiftly grew into an extreme nuisance, both figuratively and literally, and it took hard work from his parents to control their son’s impulses and bring him back down to a normal size.

But Craven’s parents felt in their heart their efforts to keep his greed in check would not work forever. Thinking that the best course of action was for their son to have a “safe” outlet for his desires rather that foolishly repress them, they short-sidedly sent off Craven to live in the northern Badlands with his uncle, an old unsavory dragon who accumulated his horde by robbing gems from ponies, griffons, and diamond dogs. It was this uncle who taught the lad that instead of mindlessly wishing to claim any token object for himself, he should instead channel his greed into ambition. Ambition to one day become the most feared dragon in the entire known world. Ambition to own the vastest horde and become the most envied dragon among his own kind.

Such teachings were obviously unfortunate in Craven’s dealings with the rest of the world, but they accomplished their intended task of letting him function as a non-disruptive member of dragon society. Years later, he moved to the Dragon Peaks during the Great Migration, where he lives to this day. Unlike his uncle though, the crafty Craven reasoned that it more rewards could be had by kidnapping ponies, and then demanding exuberant ransoms for their release. A non-aggressive species prone to pitching in to helping others in distress, ponies have proven themselves to be a reliable, non-troublesome income source for Craven no matter who he abducts.

Yet Craven plans to be much more than a simple hostage taker. With each passing day, he builds up his strength in anticipation of the day when he finally takes his place as the mightiest of all dragons.....

Character Summary:

It shouldn’t require a rocket scientist to figure out that a dragon named Craven is defined mostly by his all-consuming greed. It is only his equally strong ambition and sense of purpose developed in his formative years that prevents the dragon from turning into a witless rampaging monster. While quick to falling for flattery and outbursts of anger (which always involve bursts of flame), Craven’s also a cunning drake who recognizes that sometimes, trickery is a better tool than brute force.

Somepony who stumbles upon the territory around Craven’s lair would be shocked to find the area strangely inhabited with sparse vegetation and a small number of migratory wildlife. Unlike the rest of the suffocating desolation comprising the Dragon Peaks, Craven makes some effort to maintain his territory as a sort of oasis; a safe haven for creatures desiring a reprieve from the younger draconic thugs who recently migrated to the area. In return for Craven’s sanctuary, the dragon then trains some of them to serve as accomplices for his crimes.

As per Craven’s modus operandi, he enlists the aid of his lowly accomplices to help him conduct research on suitable kidnap victims; those most likely to command a high ransom price. It’s also the role of the fire drake’s accomplices to deliver his ransom notes, which inevitably threaten that the victim will be eaten by Craven unless their friends and family pay up big time. In reality, Craven always treats his captives well and never physically harms them… even if he humiliates or bothers them for his warped amusement. If nopony delivers a ransom for a captive though, the dragon is more than happy to mercilessly deliver his prize to the Changeling Kingdom for their love-sucking needs; Craven finds doing that much more profitable than simply eating the pony in retribution of an absent payment.

To test his strength and fatten his ego, Craven offers his services as a hired goon to any client requiring the services of a dragon. For each task he performs successfully, the more he’ll be known as a fierce being capable of bringing down any foe. If Craven is neither busy looking after prisoners or doing questionable mercenary work, he’s sparring with other dragons to home his abilities in combat. Craven very much looks forward to the day when he grows big enough to single-handedly lay waste to an entire city, and plunder its riches to claim as his own. Then, he’d be recognized by all as the greatest of all his kind.....
