History:

Early Life: There was always something a little... odd about Mirror Glass. Not exactly sinister, but somewhat uncommon. For one thing, he was by nature quiet, even as a newborn foal, he almost never cried. This was something of an initial relief to his parents, glassware merchants of Fillydelphia whose stock was vulnerable to sudden loud noises. They simply thought him reticent, and were preparing themselves to raise a shy colt.

However, as it turned out, he wasn't shy. He was just as sociable as any ordinary young pony, and could on occasion talk a great deal. But he never yelled, shouted, or raised his voice, even if he hurt himself playing outside. His parents weren't quite sure what to make of this, but it didn't seem as if there could be any real harm in letting it pass without discouragement. Self-control was a good thing, right? And so his early life went, normal for the most part, aside from his quiet little eccentricity.

Cutie Mark Story: Growing up amid glassware, the young Mirror naturally grew fascinated with the substance. He liked to watch his father melt down the sand to create the molten substance, and blow it into all manner of shapes. His mother taught him the properties of different sorts of glass, how some caught and scattered the light, how others tinted it every color of the rainbow. But what fascinated him the most were the way in which the surfaces reflected, with all the various distortions that curved and straight mirrors could produce.

It wasn't until somewhat later in his colthood that this fascination coalesced into a definite interest in developing a talent. Mirrors were all well and good, but what could a pony really use them for? It was during a Nightmare Night celebration that this question was answered. One of the things the city had decided to set up was a Haunted House, and his family was commissioned to provide a Hall of Mirrors. Mirror helped design this, and during the work was struck with an inspiration. The mirrors could be set up as adjustable, so as to allow one pony to pose as a kind of ghost or monster trapped in the mirror's reflection, with no risk of guests encountering him. Mirror proposed this idea, and his parents, who were in the mood of the holiday, helped him set it up.

It was a smashing success, quite literally, in fact; one of the patrons was so frightened that she actually smashed the mirror, revealing the pony behind the glass, quietly grinning at the sensation he produced. On his previously blank flank, there was now a cutie mark of a mirror framed in silver.

Later life and Adulthood: The combination of mirrors and showmanship in his interests naturally led Mirror Glass to the practice of conjuring and stage magic, where much is done with mirrors. Besides the traditional applications of the tricks of reflection, the unicorn was interested in the properties of reflection itself, and whether the phenomenon could be manipulated directly by magic. This led him to pursue the study in earnest, leading him into places of magical research and esoteric knowledge.

As it turned out, it was in fact possible to do so, with effort and practice. Reflective surfaces could be used as magical foci for the projection of images in two, or even three, dimensions. This deeper digging enabled him to greatly enhance what he could do with his stage-show, in which he was developing a reputation. He'd even come up with an alter-ego stage persona, which he called simply Mr. Glass, a respectably dressed unicorn stallion who, nevertheless, seemed a little unearthly in his appearance and habits. This effect was mainly due to the contrast between his respectable-looking clothes, and the wildness of his mane and tail. The effect was capped off by a pair of jade-tinted mirrored spectacles, replacing the windows of his soul with mirrors.

Character Summary/Personality: His eccentricities have increased with maturity, becoming so intertwined with his stage persona that it could be said with fairness that Mr. Glass has more or less taken over Mirror. He hasn't been seen without his stage clothes for two years now, which are a black top hat, vest, and cloak, with the aforementioned mirror-lensed spectacles. He also often carries a black umbrella, which he twirls like a swagger-stick as he walks, and uses like a wand in his stage-shows.

While he isn't a braggart or a loudmouth, he is nevertheless incredibly vain and proud of his own skill and mastery, not only in the way he produces awe in his audiences, but also in the slightly creepy impression he leaves on ponies in private interviews. He delights in making things sound more mysterious and more sinister than they really are, as if his life were a suspense story of his own authorship. His most famous, and most unnerving, trick of habit is that whenever he is annoyed, angry, inconvenienced, or upset in any way, he doesn't yell, complain, or raise his voice. He only grins wider, and speaks more slowly, like he knows some deep, dark secret that would make any attempt at vengeance on his part redundant.

The thing is, in most cases he really is as good at what he does as he thinks himself. There are few other ponies in show business who have the dedication to their character and their craft as Mr. Glass. His shows have increased in elaboration of design, often requiring new props which he had to design and build himself. And yet... a pony can't help but wonder if there really isn't something more behind him, if all the smoke and mirrors haven't really disguised some real discovery or scheme, whether malignant or benign.

But of course, a real magician never reveals his secrets...
