Roleplay Type: Canterlot Chronicles
Name: Sombra
Sex: Male
Age: Middle-aged stallion when he was imprisoned beneath the arctic snows.
Species: Unicorn
Eye Color: As a result of dark magic corruption, Sombra’s eyes feature unnatural crimson irises, which are surrounded by sickly green instead of white.
Coat: Dark gray
Mane/Tail: Black as night; thick and flowy. Sombra’s hair is thick enough to hide his ears
Physique: Taller and bulkier than nearly all other stallions. Showcasing his fall into darkness, Sombra’s horn curves backwards, its pointy end stained with a reddish color. Additionally, fangs protrude from the tyrant’s mouth.
Former Residence: Crystal Empire
Former Occupation: Despotic king of the Crystal Empire
Cutie Mark: A crimson ouroboros (serpent devouring its own tail) framing a golden crown. These items signify Sombra’s dual obsession with achieving immortality and ruling as a mighty lord of equines. Because he wears a royal robe whenever in corporeal form, the stallion’s cutie mark hais never been witnessed by anyone alive in modern times.

Extremely unusual for a pony, Sombra did not earn his cutie mark until well into his adolescence. With knowledge about Sombra’s past is virtually non-existent today, nearly everypony would be shocked to learn of his origins as a Maretonian prince. The eldest son of a Kastrot noble family, Sombra was all but expected to one day inherit his birthright as ruler of his household’s island territory. Yet the prince shunned his duties to learn proper governance to instead lock himself up in his study, consulting aged masters and poring over ancient tomes to enhance his extraordinary magic abilities. Above all else Sombra craved to discover the secret of immortality, for he above all else feared the perceived finality of death.

Prince Sombra’s obsessions did not go well with his father, and their bond become so strained that eventually, the lord named Sombra’s younger sibling as his rightful heir. The prince fumed at this grotesque insult, this birthright that was stripped from him! In his anger, Sombra for the first time dared to seek out knowledge of black magic. The prince learned that by immersing himself in dark corruptive energy, he could indeed unlock abilities that many unicorns would consider to be unnatural... including the power to cheat death.

Armed with this forbidden knowledge, Sombra then made a fateful vow. He resolved to use the dark arts to take back the birthright that was denied by that accursed father of his! Sombra’s future subjects would remain faithful to their proper lord through fear of his magics. No sons and daughters would Sombra father, for living forever made heirs irrelevant. As the unicorn chose the path he’d embark on, a cutie mark materialized on his flanks.

History:

The day Sombra used his black magic to depose his family was a dark day indeed. Other islands around Kastrot allied with the overthrown ruling house declared Sombra an usurper, and promptly declared war on him. The dark prince responded by employing magic to conquer those islands too, only to inflict even more devastation when allies of those conquered islands also joined the war. In his quest to secure legitimacy for his rule, Sombra crowned himself King of Kastrot, declaring his intent to eradicate every last threat to his rule.

Of course, King Sombra’s threats were never fulfilled, for all of Maretonia rallied against the warlord, and with their combined strength banished him forever. Sombra fled across the sea; his body by this time already suffering from severe corruption. As his powers alone failed to subjugate Maretonia, the Dark King vowed to find other means to retake the land stolen from him. It was during this time of exile and lonely wandering through eastern lands when Sombra learned all about Equestria and the Crystal Empire. Particularly, he believed that an object known as the Crystal Heart could be repurposed into a mighty weapon that could neutralize all resistance. Combined with the resources of an entire conquered nation, Maretonia was as good as Sombra’s!

When Sombra returned, it was at the head of an army of seduced barbarians and tamed monsters. The Crystal Empire fell without much of a fight, and the crystal ponies were swiftly turned into thralls for the Dark King. But before Sombra could capitalize on his victory, Princesses Celestia and Luna decisively intervened. Knowing he was outmatched by two alicorns, Sombra decided to spite his enemies with a terrible curse. Even as the royal sisters turned him into living shadow and encased him in arctic ice, Sombra used what remained of his considerable power to make the Crystal Empire vanish, locking it in time until the magic powering the curse faded away.

After a thousand years, Sombra’s curse weakened to the point whereupon the Empire returned. However, the seal keeping the Dark King beneath the ice also failed, and so Sombra also returned. His mind twisted and warped from suffering such a long imprisonment, the warlord’s only rabid thoughts were to relentlessly reacquire the Crystal Heart. In this scheme, he was foiled by a new generation of Equestrian heroes. Not only did the crystal ponies rediscover the light and love within themselves, but they channeled their energy into obliviating the very physical form of King Sombra himself!

Fortunately for the Lord of Darkness, his tireless studies into immortality paid off. Sombra’s spirit endured, and it didn’t take long before he returned yet again with a regenerated body. Equestria’s only solace is found in the fact that Sombra’s constant back-to-back defeats left him a ravaged stallion. His magical strength is all but depleted, as typical of a Kastrot unicorn who flames out, and much of the stallion’s memories have become distorted or even non-existent. No sense of coherent purpose remains in the sorcerer who’s more shadow now than stallion; only the unquenchable, irrational desire to enslave all living beings thrives within Sombra’s heart.

Character Personality:

Disgraced and depowered by repeated defeats, Sombra is the living embodiment of pure impotent rage. He is quick to anger at the slightest provocation, especially at the sight of ponies. Lacking means to fight back in his current sorry state, the overthrown king will resort to running away if faced with a potential threat. The only way for a being to reason with Sombra is by appealing to his ego, to remind him that he is a Great Lord worthy of unquestioned obedience. And even then, the fallen shadow won’t fully trust aspiring acrolytes unless they provide him means to build up his strength.

Perhaps because his mind is utterly scrambled beyond recognition, Sombra is more receptive nowadays to the art of learning than at any period in his life. Assuming that one stroked the king’s self-importance, another way to gain his trust is by providing him with knowledge, no matter how trivial. The more Sombra learns about his past in particular, the more his memories will come back and empower him to eventual victory.

Even now, Sombra knows his best chance at obtaining his ill-defined revenge is to seek out new allies. Although he hates the thought of being reliant on others, this creature of malice finds he has no choice at times but to swallow his pride despite more belligerent impulses. Sombra’s greatest assets are his immortality and his reputation (or what he recalls of it anyway), leveraging them to tempt prospective partners with promises of future power and rewards.

Unique Traits:

While he first ruled over the Crystal Empire, King Sombra performed a spell so vile and cruel that he imparted a fragment of his spirit within the Crystal Heart. Nobody knew of this deed save Sombra himself, ensuring that no one today (including the King ironically enough) knows the true secret behind the Shadow Lord’s resurrection ability. And even if by some miracle this act is brought to light, Sombra counted on the assumption that the crystal ponies would not risk destroying their most precious artifact. Thus as long as the Heart remains intact, Sombra’s spirit will forever be tethered to this earth.

As for Sombra’s inability to wield the rest of his dark magic, only through long, ceaseless struggle will that damage be undone. Little by little, and through all sorts of means, he may yet relearn all his old spells. But make no mistake; remastery for Sombra will likely take a long time.
